Human Connection as a Treatment for Addiction

Clements, Andrea D., Unterrainer, Human-Friedrich, Cook, Christopher C.H. 01 January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Research supports that social connection is important in both humans and animals. In humans, having a cohesive support/social network system and healthy attachments in childhood predict low risk of later addiction (i.e. substance use disorder), as does perceived support from a religious or other cohesive community. Moreover, personal characteristics such as identifying as religious or spiritual can predict low risk for addiction, but little is known about the intersection of neuroscience and religion/spirituality in this regard. Conversely, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have repeatedly been shown to predict later addiction. However, the role of the body’s neuro-hormonal responses, such as the endogenous opioid and oxytocin systems in this process merits further exploration, such as how the production or deprivation of endogenous opioids impact later substance use patterns. Existing research also provides evidence that individuals decrease pursuit of interpersonal connections and social bonds when they use substances that activate opioid receptors. This has been found with both substances of abuse and medications used to treat addiction (e.g., methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone). Research has also demonstrated that addiction often results in situations of social isolation. However, it remains to be elucidated whether the substances of abuse physiologically meet that need for connection. Importantly, research across numerous fields indicates that intentionally increasing interpersonal connection may be an effective treatment for addiction. However, less is known about how specific characteristics of communities impact the quantity, quality, or effectiveness of care and support for a person with addiction [...] / https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/1292/thumbnail.jpg

A Fall From Grace: The Rising Rate of Attorneys with Substance Abuse Disorders, Chemical Dependencies and Addictions

Yost, Amy M 01 January 2022 (has links)
This thesis is a continuation of research and scholarly writing that the author completed for a published article that appeared in Volume 5 of the University of Central Florida Undergraduate Law Journal, Spring 2022. The rising rate of attorneys with a self-reported substance abuse disorder, chemical or alcohol dependency, as the data reveals, is the highest in our country’s history. Although the notion of attorney addictions and dependency issues may come as a surprise to those outside of the legal community, these issues are not breaking news. Rather, the data has been slowly emerging due to the increasing number of law students utilizing performance-enhancing substances and attorneys’ pleas for addiction assistance and support from the legal community. But where does the foundation for dependency lie? How did it begin and what fuels that continuum? Are addicted attorneys merely victims of circumstance? Are the consequences more or less severe than those for non-attorney civilians? Are the current resources available adequate to provide proper assistance for attorneys in need? The cornerstone here is access to the resources prior to making precarious decisions of deceit and wrongdoing, coupled with proper support and rehabilitative systems. This thesis will explore addiction and dependency issues of law students and lawyers alike by providing analyses of the triggers, aggravating factors, and consequences whilst contemporaneously evaluating currently available resources. Perhaps a current exploration of this data will result in a reimagining of the protocols surrounding publicized disciplinary actions against lawyers stemming from a dependency or addiction. Alternatively, the research results may lead to an expansion of the existing Lawyer Assistance Programs (LAP) to include mandatory therapy, specialized group sessions, monitored sponsorships and additional Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses. Additionally, the research explores how disciplinary proceedings are handled in an arguably unfair forum, such as inconsistencies involving judicial discretion. Further, arguments will be made to bolster reasons as to why returning to the practice of confidential disciplinary proceedings would benefit those in need, including an analysis of current substance abuse confidentiality regulations seen in California and Louisiana.

Faktorer relaterade till genomförande av uppföljningsintervjuer med ASI – klientprofil och organisation / Factors related to the implementation of the follow-up interviews with ASI - client profile and organization

Eriksson, Jakob, Mara, Adelin January 2014 (has links)
Data samlades in på två sätt. / Addiction Severity Index (ASI) is thought to be used both for client work at the individual level and for research at a group level. This study examines the extent to which the ASI Follow-up is carried out, and the individual and organizational factors influencing the usage. The study is quantitative, i.e. presents statistical analyzes. Data were collected in two ways. Access to ASI data was made possible by an anonymous file from the database ASI-Net and included data from eleven municipalities in Jönköping County. ASI data consisted of 1,964 interviews from ASI Basic and ASI Follow-up and was needed for the investigation of individual factors. Data regarding organizational factors was collected through web surveys to managers in Individual and Family Care (IFO) in the same eleven municipalities. The result shows that the percentage of follow-up interviews is increasing every year and that there are large differences between municipalities in the usage of the percentage of follow-up interviews. The analysis of individual factors suggest that the elderly, with higher education and a profession are interviewed to a greater extent. Clients with serious problems and in need of help with alcohol also undergo follow-up interviews more frequently, while more problems with drugs and legal problems tend to be followed-up to a lesser degree. The analysis of organizational factors could not in a meaningful way be tested for significance since the population for the web survey was small, however, correlation was discovered between the percentage of follow-up interviews for each municipality and organizational factors of population in municipalities and employee turnover. Organizational factors show the contrary as expected that small municipalities follow up to higher degree, and that factors such as staff turnover, training and case quantity does not explain the existing differences. The study's conclusions are that the percentage of ASI Follow-up is continuously increasing. Although the ASI follow-up is increasing, it is a long way until the even half of all cases with ASI Basic are re-interviewed. To increase the motivation to carry out follow-up interviews, it may be important for the social workers to get back more in the form of summaries and analyzes at the group level.

Kubátová, Michaela January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this qualitative study was to map the preparation and process of relapse prevention programs in therapeutic community for treating addictions in Czech republic called Magdaléna o.p.s.. The next aim was to describe the specifics of these programs and analyse methods that are mostly applied. For fullfilling these aims, four methods were chosen: analisys of documents, semistructured interwiews with the members of the team of therapists, observation of the researcher in the specific relapse prevention program during her internship and one semistructured interview with client of this therapeutic community. The final number of respondents for this research was four therapists and one client. Three metodic relapse prevention documents were analysed and for setting the final outcomes of this research were also used the outputs from the observation of the researcher from the specific relapse prevention program. Based on this research it was found out, that the specific relapse prevention programs in Magdaléna have been part of the long-term structured schedule of the treatment. Specifika klientů s duální diagnózou v procesu léčby v terapeutických komunitách pro drogově závislé: fenomén sebemedikace a pozdní abstinenční psychopatologie / Clients with dual diagnosis and their specifics in the process of treatment in therapeutic communities for drug addicts: self-medication phenomenon and late abstinence psychopatology

Vyskočilová, Lucie January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is about clients who are in treatment in therapeutic communities for drug addicts and suffer with a mental illness alongside drug addiction. The theoretical part summarizes the definition and description of dual diagnosis, the prevalence of people with dual diagnosis and discusses the possibilities of therapeutic approaches to clients with these specific demands. Finally, attention is paid to the theory of self-medication for symptoms of mental illness through addictive substances which supports the theoretical model of addiction as a result of reactions to psychiatric illness. The research was carried out at the research group, which was formed by all clients currently in treatment in two therapeutic communities for drug addicts in July 2015. The research was conducted as a quantitative design through non-standardized questionnaire. This research shows that from the total number of respondents, 79% had a psychiatric diagnosis in addition to substance abuse. Most often these were methamphetamine users and multiple substance users. From psychiatric disorders were most strongly represented personality disorders, depressive disorders and disorders from psychotic spectrum. With respondents who reported substance abuse to suppress psychopathological symptoms occurred reduction of most of...

Matky-uživatelky návykových látek a jejich motivace k léčbě v terapeutické komunitě / Substance using mothers and their motivation for treatment in the therapeutic community

Kotrla, Barbora January 2019 (has links)
Purpose: While our modern society seems to have learnt how to accept and tolerate drug-addicted men, drug-addicted women on the other hand are even typically confronted with prejudice and contempt from the part of society. We should pay more attention to gender problematics despite the addiction background. We should map the motivation and circumstances that could on one side convince women to addiction treatment and on the other side prevent them from taking treatment and completing it. Goals: The first goal of this thesis was to map the circumstances and motivation that bring female clients - substance-using mothers with their children - to treatment in the therapeutic community. The second target was to find out which specific motivational determinants keep female clients in treatment. The third aim of this work was to find out which area of CMRS questionnaire is most involved in the motivation of clients. Research Methodology: Research data collection took place in July and August 2018 in one particular therapeutic community. A semi-structured interview was conducted with clients followed by two short CMRS and DAST questionnaires. Research Target Group: The target research group consisted of eight clients from the therapeutic community. All clients were mothers in the age of 24 - 35 years....
