Oliveira, Carlos Eduardo Pellicer de 24 October 2011 (has links)
This thesis is a study of stability of quasinormal modes in a system featuring a stability change if one continuously varies the physical parameters of a black hole. The stability change thus found has some possible interpretations in the AdS/CFT correspondence. The main tool used in this study for calculating quasinormal modes are numerical methods that can be used in numerous works in this area of research, especially because they do not depend on assumptions of symmetry or any convenient behavior of the physical system.

Geometrias bubbling na correspondência AdS/CFT / Bubbling geometries in the AdS/CFT correspondence

Mosquera, Eiser Augusto Portilla 30 September 2014 (has links)
The scope of this Master program was to get acquainted with the so-called {\\it AdS/CFT correspondence}, which has been one of the most important developments in theoretical physics in the last decades. According to this correspondence, deformations of the geometries in the gravity side (or \"AdS\" side) must be mapped to states of the dual gauge theories (or \"CFT\" side). In particular, we have been interested in exploring a particular entry in the AdS/CFT dictionary, namely, the relation between 1/2 BPS operators in ${\\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills, and the so-called {\\it bubbling geometries} on the gravity side. In order to do that, we first present the notions of N=4 SYM and Supergravity solutions. In this way, we can expose the statement of the AdS/CFT correspondence, and later show the derivation of 1/2 BPS geometries dual to 1/2 BPS states in N=4 SYM as an example of this one.

Gravity approach to strongly coupled gauge theories

Lundmark, Kristofer January 2011 (has links)
A written report of a paper titled Holographic dual of collimated radiation by Veronika E. Hubeny where a new and easier method is proposed to estimate the “radiation due to an accelerated quark in a strongly coupled medium”. The method is able to reproduce the results from an earlier paper without the need of solving the linearized Einstein equations but by way of calculating geodesics in AdS using the AdS/CFT correspondence and the gravitational dual of the quark being a string. A quick introduction to synchrotron radiation and general relativity is given after which the AdS/CFT correspondence is introduced along with the results and method of V. Hubeny. / A bachelor thesis in theoretical physics.

Force-free magnetospheres, Kerr-AdS black holes and holography

Wang, Xun 23 December 2014 (has links)
In this thesis, we study the energy extraction from rotating black holes in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime (Kerr-AdS black holes), via the Blandford-Znajek (BZ) process. The motivation is the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence which provides a duality between gravitational physics in asymptotically AdS spacetimes and lower dimensional boundary field theories. The BZ process operates via a force-free magnetosphere around black holes and the rotational energy of the black hole is extracted electromagnetically in the form of Poynting flux. The major part of the thesis is devoted to obtaining force-free solutions in the Kerr-AdS background, which generalize traditional BZ solutions in the asymptotically flat Kerr background. Given the solutions, we use the AdS/CFT to infer dual descriptions in terms of the boundary field theory, which hopefully will lead to a better understanding of the energy extraction for rotating black holes. / Graduate

Um estudo da física de sistemas multiplicativos subcríticos acionados por fontes e a utilização de códigos determinísticos no cálculo destes sistemas / A STUDY OF PHYSICS OF SUB CRITICAL MULTIPLICATIVES SYSTEMS DRIVEN BY SOURCES AND THE UTILIZATION OF DETERMINISTICS CODES IN CALCULATION OF THIS SYSTEMS

Alberi Antunes 18 December 2008 (has links)
This work presents the Physics of Source Driven Systems (ADS). It shows some statics and kinetics parameters of the reactor Physics and when it is sub critical, that are important in evaluation and definition of these systems. The objective is to demonstrate that there are differences in parameters when the reactor is critical. Moreover, the work shows the differences observed in the parameters for different calculation models. Two calculation methodologies are shown in this dissertation: Gandini&Salvatores and Dulla, and some parameters are calculated. The ANISN deterministic transport code is used in calculation in order to compare these parameters. In a sub critical configuration of IPEN/MB-01 Reactor driven by an external source some parameters are calculated. The conclusions about calculation realized are presented in end of work.

Haj Tahar, Malek 13 January 2017 (has links)
High power proton accelerators allow providing, by spallation reaction, the neutron fluxes necessary in thesynthesis of fissile material, starting from Uranium 238 or Thorium 232. This is the basis of the concept ofsub-critical operation of a reactor, for energy production or nuclear waste transmutation, with the objective ofachieving cleaner, safer and more efficient process than today’s technologies allow.Designing, building and operating a proton accelerator in the 500-1000 MeV energy range, CW regime,MW power class still remains a challenge nowadays. There is a limited number of installations at presentachieving beam characteristics in that class, e.g., PSI in Villigen, 590 MeV CW beam from a cyclotron, SNS inOakland, 1 GeV pulsed beam from a linear accelerator, in addition to projects as the ESS in Europe, a 5 MWbeam from a linear accelerator.Furthermore, coupling an accelerator to a sub-critical nuclear reactor is a challenging proposition: some ofthe key issues/requirements are the design of a spallation target to withstand high power densities as well asensure the safety of the installation. These two domains are the grounds of the PhD work: the focus is on the high power ring methods inthe frame of the KURRI FFAG collaboration in Japan: upgrade of the installation towards high intensityis crucial to demonstrate the high beam power capability of FFAG. Thus, modeling of the beam dynamicsand benchmarking of different codes was undertaken to validate the simulation results. Experimental resultsrevealed some major losses that need to be understood and eventually overcome.By developing analytical models that account for the field defects, one identified major sources of imperfectionin the design of scaling FFAG that explain the important tune variations resulting in the crossing of severalbetatron resonances. A new formula is derived to compute the tunes and properties established that characterizethe effect of the field imperfections on the transverse beam dynamics. The results obtained allow to developa correction scheme to minimize the tune variations of the FFAG. This is the cornerstone of a new fixed tunenon-scaling FFAG that represents a potential candidate for high power applications. As part of the developments towards high power at the KURRI FFAG, beam dynamics studies have toaccount for space charge effects. In that framework, models have been installed in the tracking code ZGOUBIto account for the self-interaction of the particles in the accelerator. Application to the FFAG studies is shown. Finally, one focused on the ADSR concept as a candidate to solve the problem of nuclear waste. In orderto establish the accelerator requirements, one compared the performance of ADSR with other conventionalcritical reactors by means of the levelized cost of energy. A general comparison between the different acceleratortechnologies that can satisfy these requirements is finally presented. In summary, the main drawback of the ADSR technology is the high Levelized Cost Of Energy comparedto other advanced reactor concepts that do not employ an accelerator. Nowadays, this is a show-stopper forany industrial application aiming at producing energy (without dealing with the waste problem). Besides, thereactor is not intrinsically safer than critical reactor concepts, given the complexity of managing the targetinterface between the accelerator and the reactor core.

Holography of SYK model

Gardell, Fredrik January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to study the AdS/CFT correspondence and the AdS2/SYK connection as a very special example of the duality. While the first part of the thesis contains a review of AdS/CFT correspondence in arbitrary dimensions, the later parts focus on an interesting and speculative connection between the gravitational physics in two dimensional nearly AdS2 spacetime and one dimensional SYK model. More specifically, the connection is realized in terms of certain features of the SYK model in strong coupling limit, which resembles those of nearly AdS2 Jackiw-Teitelboim theory.

Implementação  e qualificação de metodologia de cálculos neutrônicos em reatores subcríticos acionados por fontes externa de nêutrons e aplicações / Implementation and qualification of neutronic calculation methodology in subcritical reactors driven by external neutron sources and applications

Thiago Carluccio 19 August 2011 (has links)
This works had as goal to investigate calculational methodologies on subcritical source driven reactor, such as Accelerator Driven Subcritical Reactor (ADSR) and Fusion Driven Subcritical Reactor (FDSR). Intense R&D has been done about these subcritical concepts, mainly due to Minor Actinides(MA) and Long Lived Fission Products(LLFP) transmutation possibilities. In this work, particular emphasis has been given to: (i ) complement and improve calculation methodology with neutronic transmutation and decay capabilities and implement it computationally, (ii ) utilization of this methodology in the Coordinated Research Project (CRP) of the International Atomic Energy Agency Analytical and Experimental Benchmark Analysis of ADS and in the Collaborative Work on Use of Low Enriched Uranium in ADS, especially in the reproduction of the experimental results of the Yalina Booster subcritical assembly and study of a subcritical core of IPEN/MB-01 reactor, (iii ) to compare dierent nuclear data libraries calculation of integral parameters, such as keff and ksrc, and dierential distributions, such as spectrum and ux, and nuclides inventories and (iv ) apply the developed methodology in a study that may help future choices about dedicated transmutation system. The following tools have been used in this work: MCNP (Monte Carlo N particle transport code), MCB (enhanced version of MCNP that allows burnup calculation) and NJOY to process nuclear data from evaluated nuclear data files.

Supercordas e Aspectos da Correspondência AdS/CFT / Superstrings and some aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Renann Lipinski Jusinskas 11 March 2010 (has links)
This is a review work. The main formalisms on the development of string theory are introduced and discussed: the bosonic string and the superstrings formalisms of Ramond-Never-Schwarz and Green-Schwarz. The effective actions in the low energy limit of the D-branes (DBI action) and supergravity theories (D=10,11) are introduced as well. Finally, some aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence are analised, enunciating the conjecture and introducing some entries of the dictionary. The appendices contains some topics that are highly relevant for the whole text and may help clarify several ideas and arguments through it.

DinÃmica de solitons em superfluidos hologrÃficos. / Dynamics of solitons in holographic superfluids

Victor Pereira do Nascimento Santos 16 July 2010 (has links)
We numerically study the formation and dynamics of domain-wall-like topological defects in superfluids, using a (3+1)-dimensional abelian Maxwell-Higgs model, under the AdS/CFT correspondence. We obtain the bulk-boundary propagators, as well as the correlation functions on the boundary for a scalar field, both in massive and non-massive cases. If we impose that the fields depends only on a boundary coordinate and the bulk radial coordinate, we obtain in the dual theory the domain wall solutions found in literature. From these solutions we found that the superfluid is characterized by two length scales, one for the order parameter and other for the charge density. We also study the change of charge density in the region near the interface of the defect, and finally we investigate the modifications needed in theory to study the dynamics of these solutions.
