Experiences of Laotian teachers of the Human Values Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education training programmePadayachee, Silverani 01 1900 (has links)
Access to safe water and improved sanitation remains threatened by the ever increasing
demand in urbanised cities of the world. Adequate management of this problem could
not be achieved through technical and regulatory methods alone. A human values-based
education approach, namely the Human Values Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
Education (HVWSHE) programme, was considered a suitable intervention strategy to
bring about the desired changes in attitude and behaviour by the water users.
This research involves an empirical case study approach that explores the experiences
of Laotian teachers as adult learners of the HVWSHE intervention as well as a literature
study on adult education, adult learning facilitation, human values-based education and
teacher beliefs. Focus group meetings, lesson observations, participant observation,
field notes and a researcher journal was used to collect data.
This study revealed that the HVWSHE training programme had a positive effect on the
adult learners’ attitude and behaviour towards a better water-use and sanitation-friendly

Evaluating the training techniques in the detective learning programmes in the in-service training centres of the Western CapeScheepers, Sandra 31 March 2008 (has links)
The research project investigated the basic detective training courses presented in the two training institutions of the Western Cape Province namely Paarl Detective Academy and Philippi In-Service Training Centre. The two courses that were researched were the Detective Learning programme of Paarl and the Introduction to Crime Investigation of Philippi. The focus of the research was on the training techniques used in the facilitation of these programmes. The research was done with interviews of focus groups of learners that were attending the courses. Individual interviews were held with trainers of both the training institutions. Observation was done in the classes at the two training institutions during the facilitation of the courses. Although the training techniques could be more advanced, other aspects were identified that was of a bigger concern for the learners and trainers alike. Teaching English as a second or foreign language to adults in Qatar: exploring gender differences in language acquistionRousseau, Riana 04 1900 (has links)
This study was conducted to explore gender differences in language acquisition of adult male and female learners in Qatar. With globalization, English is no longer exclusively being used by the traditional English-speaking world only. It has become the international communicative language, used for commerce and trade, as well as the social media. For these reasons, many learners in Qatar attend an English language centre to acquire the necessary skills to become more fluent in the language. Both male and female learners enter the classroom with a wealth of life experiences, but just unable to communicate effectively in the target language. Therefore, teaching English to adult males and females from different nationalities, including the local Qatari population, should never been considered in isolation. The gender differences in language acquisition of these learners have to be acknowledged, taking their cognitive styles, motivation towards learning, strategies employed, anxieties experienced and the teaching practices into account.
English language lecturers have a responsibility to be knowledgeable on the subject they teach, as well as possess the necessary skills to best educate these learners. In this situation, adult language learners do however, also have to accept responsibility for their own actions and seek out every opportunity to acquire English. / Educational Studies / D. Phil. Challenges faced by staff members in information and communication training at a public university in the Eastern CapeCeza, Nomnqophiso Prudencia 07 1900 (has links)
The introduction of e-learning in teaching and learning has necessitated the training of staff members in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This study focuses on the challenges that staff members, who are the facilitators of learning, experience when undergoing training in ICT. The research design employed a qualitative methodology which involved focus groups from a public university. Data was collected from the participants through semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that the challenges that staff members experienced during ICT training are related to a lack of computer competence, lack of time, an information overload, the non-involvement of staff in the planning of their training, facilitation limitations, lack of technical support and institutional challenges that involve infrastructure. The study further revealed that the principles of adult learning play a reciprocal role in the staff’s professional developmental challenges. In view of these findings, this study offers recommendations for improving the ICT training of staff members. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Adult Education)

Motivators, contributors and inhibitors in adult higher education in the University of the Western CapeViljoen, Karin 01 1900 (has links)
Lifelong learning for adults has almost become compulsory for the maintenance of employability. In the South African context, The National Plan for Higher Education advocated an increase of adult learners entering higher education to facilitate lifelong learning.
This study will focus on adult learners returning to institutions of higher education on a full-time basis. The study will determine factors that motivate adults to enter the learning environment, and it will identify inhibitors and contributors during their studies. A qualitative research design has been employed. Analysis of data collected by open-ended questionnaires and in-depth interviews indicated that the motivation to return to higher education was mainly personal and career driven. Students reported on situational, dispositional, and institutional inhibitors they experienced and had to overcome. Contributors identified included various support systems. Recommendations are made in view of the results of the empirical study to assist institutions of higher education in South Africa to meet the unique needs of the adult learner. / Educational Studies / M. Perceptions of adult education teachers about their working condition in the Adult Basic Education and Training programme in the Gauteng East Education DistrictMabuza, Raymond Vusi 02 July 2020 (has links)
This research presents a qualitative inquiry of the perceptions of the adult education teachers about their working conditions in the Adult Basic Education and Training programme.
A qualitative investigation method was conducted, and a semi-structured interview was employed to collect data. The data from open-ended questions was analysed using a thematic approach.
Findings suggest that the condition of services for adult education teachers was not acceptable and the levels of job satisfaction among teachers in adult education was low.
Some recommendations that arise from the study are that the dilapidated buildings belonging to adult education be revamped and teaching and learning resources be provided. It is also recommended that the employment conditions of adult education teachers be in line with those of mainstream education teachers. / Adult Basic Education (ABET) / M. Ed. (Adult Education)
