Franchisors' contribution towards franchisees' business failures / B.L. Yozi.

Yozi, Bongiwe Linda January 2009 (has links)
Franchising is emerging as a highly effective strategy for business growth, local employment and regional economic development. It is the most realistic and promising formula to emerge yet for the development of business skills and a thriving entrepreneurial culture in South Africa. Many prospective franchisees believe that when they pay their franchise fee, they are buying a business. Very frequently, the franchisor has not made the franchise relationship clear to the franchisee, which results inadvertently in deciding to run things their own way, break the franchise rules and ultimately fail in the endeavor. Thus the aim of this study was to establish whether franchisors have a direct impact towards the success or failure of the franchisee's business. The causes of success and failure are central to entrepreneurial research. Thus one need to understand whether franchisors are in any way involved in franchisees' success or failure. The first chapter of this dissertation is an explanation of the franchise concept. It is in its own a brief summary of what is discussed throughout the study. Objectives of the study, scope of the study and the method of research are all discussed in this chapter. Chapter 2 discusses many definitions of franchising: the franchise agreement, what the potential franchisees need to familiarise themselves with upon entering this contractual obligation. Advantages and disadvantages for both the franchisor and franchisee are also discussed. The relationship between these two parties is discussed as it serves as a cornerstone towards success or failure of a franchise business. This chapter thus provides a blueprint of what needs to be done in order to make a success of the franchise business. Chapter 3 entails an empirical study by way of questionnaires, designed to ascertain whether franchisors are in any way responsible for the success or failure of the franchisee’s business. Franchisee businesses were selected in the Vaal region and 25 outlets responded to the study. The results of the questionnaire were analysed and discussed in this chapter Chapter 4 summarises the research with conclusions and recommendations from the empirical study covered in Chapter 3. The aim was to ascertain whether research objectives were reached by the study, as stated in the literature and empirical studies. Conclusions were reached with regard to the study and one of the most important facets identified was the franchise relationship. The relationship was identified as the glue that holds the franchise partnership together; the existence and maintenance thereof, is what will make or break the franchise business. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2010.

Agile in the context of Software Maintenance : A Case Study

Devulapally, Gopi Krishna January 2015 (has links)
Context: Adopting agile practices has proven to be successful for many practitioners both academically and practically in development scenario. But the context of agile practices adoption during software maintenance is partially studied and is mostly focused on benefits. The success factors of agile practices during development cannot be related to maintenance, as maintenance differs in many aspects from development. The context of this research is to study the adoption of different agile practices during software maintenance. Objectives: In this study, an attempt has been made to accomplish the following objectives: Firstly, to identify different agile practices that are adopted in practice during software maintenance. Secondly, identifying advantages and disadvantages of adopting those agile practices during software maintenance. Methods: To accomplish the objectives a case study is conducted at Capgemini, Mumbai, India. Data is collected by conducting two rounds of interviews among five different projects which have adopted agile practices during software maintenance. Close-ended questionnaire and open-ended questionnaires have been used respectively for first and second round interviews. The motivation for selecting different questionnaire is because each round aimed to accomplish different research objectives. Apart from interviews, direct observation of agile practices in each project is done to achieve data triangulation. Finally, a validation survey is conducted among second round interview participants and other practitioners from outside the case study to validate the data collected during second round interviews. Results: A simple literature review identified 30 agile practices adopted during software maintenance. On analyzing first round of interviews 22 practices are identified to be mostly adopted and used during software maintenance. The result of adopting those agile practices are categorized as advantages and disadvantages. In total 12 advantages and 8 disadvantages are identified and validated through second round interviews and validation survey respectively. Finally, a cause-effect relationship is drawn among the identified agile practices and consequences. Conclusions: Adopting agile practices has both positive and negative result. Adopting agile practices during perfective and adaptive type of maintenance has more advantages, but adopting agile practices during corrective type of maintenance may not have that many advantages as compared to other type of maintenance. Hence, one has to consider the type of maintenance work before adopting agile practices during software maintenance.

The Advantageous and Disadvantageous Aspects of Utilizing Cooperative Learning in an ESL Classroom

Hultberg, Jens, Söderberg, Filip January 2020 (has links)
This evaluation of research investigates the advantageous and disadvantageous aspects of utilizing cooperative learning into the ESL (English as a second language) classroom for pupils at an elementary education level. Teachers need to be contemporary with their pedagogy and lesson design and implement methods that can enable that the national criteria regarding knowledge requirements in the syllabus for English are met. The methods within cooperative learning corresponds with sociocultural theories of Vygotsky as it is based on the zone of proximal development where high achievers can develop accordingly to their own qualifications, as well as low achievers. In the current study, we examine a selection of empirical studies on cooperative learning. The results of this analysis reveal that Cooperative learning is an advantageous way of reaching every individual to make sure that their English language acquisition is nurtured, but that the aspects of group grading make it difficult when grading each individual pupil. The findings also revealed that the implementation of cooperative learning into the ESL classroom had advantageous outcomes when it comes to vocabulary learning, writing skills, speaking skills and a lot of the pupils gained a better confidence and had a high achievement level in comparison to more traditional teacher focused pedagogy. Pupils also showed that their motivation and attitudes changed over time, when exposed of the cooperative learning methods in the ESL classroom. It is advised that teachers utilize cooperative learning in the ESL classroom hence it is beneficial for both pupils and teachers. Keywords: Cooperative learning, English as a second language, English as a foreign language, elementary school, group grading, ESL classroom and EFL classroom.

Implementation of dynamic route optimization - drivers and barriers

Karlsson, Victor, Olsson, Susanna January 2018 (has links)
Svevia is a company working with installation, occupancy and operation of infrastructure. They are currently testing and developing a new system called dynamic route optimization (DynOpt) in cooperation with B and M Systemutveckling. This system is able to contribute to a series of improvements for the company, such as automatization of certain processes, conclude demand on a more local level and create dynamic optimized routes which in the best way handles the determined local demands. Svevia sees great potentials of profits with the system, thereby has an interest of a support for decision-making regarding what may or may not be problematic during a potential implementation of such a system. This report regards a case study of the affects that DynOpt can have on its future users and what impact such effects might have on Svevia, with the goal of determining the drivers and barriers of DynOpt related to soft parameters. The soft parameters in this case study relate to how the changes DynOpt entails may affect the users and why or why not they may desire or be willing to accept these changes. The method used to conclude these drivers and barriers is to firstly gather information from the users by interviews and surveys, which then is analyzed in order to determine what advantages and disadvantages the users see with the system. The second step of the data processing consists of a SWOT-analysis execution. The strategic effects are determined through consultation with insight personnel. Lastly the remaining significant results are converted into drivers and barriers by firstly eliminating the information that may not pan out in any driver or barrier and secondly lumping together result describing similar effects into drivers and barriers. Eleven drivers and six barriers are concluded. Such results are for example the driver that the potential future users’ interest in technology may ease the implementation since DynOpt is a technological implementation. One of the barriers on the other hand is that the total driving distance will be reduced through optimization, which results in less available work for the chauffeurs which worsens their working conditions and can result in resistance to the implementation. This driver and barrier as well as the others in conjunction with a discussion, constitute the final result of the report and describe aspects that may hinder or make it easier to successfully implement DynOpt.
