Rey, David 14 December 2012 (has links)
As global air traffic volume is continuously increasing, it has become a priority to improve air traffic control in order to deal with future air traffic demand. One of the current challenges regarding air traffic management is the airspace capacity problem, which is acknowledged to be correlated to air traffic controllers' workload. Air traffic controllers stand at the core of the traffic monitoring system and one of their main objective is to ensure the separation of aircraft by anticipating potential conflicts. Conflict detection and resolution are likely to increase workload and may lead them to reroute aircrafts to less dense areas, triggering off flight delay. The airspace capacity problem can hence be tackled by regulating air traffic flow in order to reduce the global conflict quantity. The objective of this thesis is to develop a methodology aiming at minimizing potential conflicts quantity by slightly adjusting aircraft speeds in real time. This approach is mainly motivated by conclusions of the ERASMUS project on subliminal speed control, which was designed to keep air traffic controllers unaware of the ongoing regulation process. By focusing on low magnitude speed modulations, aircraft trajectories can be modified to reduce the quantity of conflicts and smoothen air traffic flow in the airspace network. The method used to carry out this type of regulation is constraint optimization. In this thesis, we develop a deterministic optimization model for two-aircraft conflicts which is then adapted to large scale instances using Mixed-Integer Linear Programming. In order to reproduce realistic navigation conditions, uncertainty on aircraft speeds is introduced with the goal of modeling the impact of trajectory prediction uncertainty in air traffic management. To validate our approach, a simulation device capable of simulating real air traffic data over the European airspace is used. Main results of this work reveal a significant conflict quantity reduction and demonstrate the robustness of the developed model to the uncertainty in trajectory prediction. Finally, the impact of our model on air traffic flow is measured through several air traffic management indicators and validates the proposed methodology.

Método de modelagem e verificação formal aplicado a sistemas de tráfego aéreo. / Modeling and formal verification method applied to air traffic systems.

Rafael Leme Costa 03 August 2018 (has links)
Developing safety critical systems is one of the most challenging problems in Engineering nowadays. There is usually a pressure to reduce the total time of the development, what makes it difficult to deliver systems with an acceptable low level of defects. In the recent years, there has been an increase in air trffic, what demands a modernization in the current air traffic systems, which are very dependent on the human controller. Air traffic systems are considered safety critical and real time systems. The objective of the present work is to establish a modeling and formal verification method for critical systems, applicable to the air traffic domain. By adopting modeling and formal verification techniques, it is expected to ensure the systems\' correctness compared with the initially specified requirements and the error detection in the initial phases of the project. Guidelines are provided for applying the method by means of a case study, based in three modules of and ATC system in a low abstraction level, for the validation of the operation of software modules. For the formal verification, it is used the NuSMV tool and the properties to be checked are described in the computational tree logic (CTL) to ensure that the system satisfies requirements of liveness and safety types.

Katia Esper Izar Verniano 21 May 2009 (has links)
This study aimed to verify whether the dichotic or spatialized (3D audio system) presentation of two simultaneous sentences in English facilitate the identification of a target information comparing to dihotic (nonspatialized) presentation. The subjects in this study were air traffic controllers having as L1 (mother tongue) Brazilian Portuguese, and were divided into two groups (novice and experienced), according to their period of experience on the job. The spatialization of messages improved recognition of the target message by the volunteers. There were no significant differences between volunteers with different levels of knowledge in English, professional experience or gender.

Fehlprognosen im Luftverkehr

Hergert, Michael, Thießen, Friedrich 02 October 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Aviation traffic forecasts and airport analyses are important instruments which influence decisions on aviation related infrastructure. Behind many of such infrastructure projects, which are supported by forecast analyses, one finds political interests. This is especially the case for aviation projects, such as infrastructure enlargement projects of airports, which are motivated by distinct goals and desires. Referees who act within this framework are exposed to the risk of producing biased results. The quality of such aviation traffic forecasts is the subject of this working paper. To begin with, one major obstacle is that there is only one such referee available in Germany - Intraplan Consult GmbH. Other referees have only a minimal, insignificant share of output, which cannot be used for any further empirical investigation. This is the reason why the present working paper focuses on airport analyses produced by Intraplan Consult GmbH. We believe that these research results are of common character, and thus are transferable to other related airport studies. The following three research questions have been investigated: • Do recent aviation traffic forecasts performed by Intraplan Consult GmbH overestimate actual traffic developments? • Are there any indications that some specific forecast measures (such as PAX, freight and cargo, flight movement) might be overestimated exceptionally frequently? • Are there any indications that specific types and events of forecast analysis (such as airport expansion projects, official authorisation of a project by the public administration) overestimated exceptionally frequently? Empirical investigation has shown that forecast analyses tend to be indeed overestimated, compared to the actual traffic developments. It could be shown that the quality of the research results is widespread and not normally distributed. Furthermore, systematic errors with regard to the point of inflection in forecast-realisation-diagrams were identified. This means that models constructed by Intraplan could not identify points of inflection on the development path in the real world. For instance, airlines have undergone structure and strategic changes over the periods of investigation which could not be captured by Intraplan models. In addition, three forecast measures, namely the amount of (i) passenger, (ii) freight and post and the (iii) flight movements, have been analysed. All three of them have shown systematic overestimated forecast results. In particular, forecasts of flight movements have been largely overestimated. These forecast analyses have further been categorized according to their purpose, namely project cases for the issue of approval certificates, worst-case scenarios for the issue of approval certificates and market studies. All three categories show systematic misjudgements and miscalculations. Regarding the market studies, systematic overestimation was identified. It tends to be less severe than for the project cases, where extreme estimates of 20-50% higher growth rates were found. In contrast to this, worst-case scenarios systematically underestimated actual development trends. The last two of which suggest the assumption that, when analysing enlargement projects of airports, worst-case scenario forecast figures and project case forecast figures have been deliberately manipulated in order to put the expansion project in question into the right perspective. Misjudgement by Intraplan, regarding the points of inflection, shows that they cannot forecast any strategic development by the aviation industry flawlessly. However, it can be assumed that this may also be in the interest of their contractors. Others as those suggested strategies by their clients are not included in their models. To further strengthen this suggestion, all empirical ex post results show that only a small share of all possible strategies, and especially the most improbable strategies, had been used. The aviation industry argues that miscalculation by Intraplan only relates to the events around the financial crisis in 2008, which have been unpredictable. Our research results showed that few airports had indeed been hit, regarding their development, by the financial crisis in 2008 and after. Others, however, have shown no effect and continued their rather constant development before and after the financial crisis. Forecast analyses have also been inaccurate and false for these airports. In addition to this, some of these airports had already undergone a strategic change, airline strategic change, before the financial crisis. As well, with regard to these airports, the forecast model by Intraplan produced false results. On the other hand, some forecast results have been correct, despite the financial crisis. All in all, it can be argued that incorrect forecasts have not been caused as much by the financial crisis as by the missing capacities of the model to incorporate strategic change.

Design und User Experience in der Flugsicherung – Assistenzsystem zur Fernüberwachung im Multi-Airport-Betrieb

Leitner, Rodney, Oehme, Astrid 19 July 2017 (has links) (PDF)

Adaptation du design des visualisations de type supervisions pour optimiser la transmission des notifications classées par niveau d’intérêt / Visualisations design adaptation to optimize the transmission of notifications sorted by relevance

Imbert, Jean-Paul 16 December 2014 (has links)
Air traffic control is undergoing a great change due to the increase of traffic and the evolution of thecontrol tools. The greater number of aircrafts managed by the controller implies a much greater load ofinformation to deal with and memorize than before. A significant part of accidents’ causes is already dueto the problem of information perception and memorization which is worsened by the size of the controlscreens which are particularly critical concerning the perception of alarms and warnings displayed onthe radar image. The current design in France of those types of alerts which rely on color is controversialand an Aviation Safety bulletin recommended it should be improved. The perception of informationcontributing to a satisfactory situation awareness by the air traffic controllers is central to this thesis whichaims at making sure alarms and relevant information are detected early enough and according to prioritiesand that the corresponding actions are actually performed. To answer the issue at stake our first work focusdealt with the study of the controllers’ task so as to analyze the required information in order to achievecertain objectives and provide a task monitoring agent that could support them. The second work focusdealt with the notifications perception, more specifically in the peripheral vision and the conception ofdesigns such as to improve their perception and the study of their impact on the performance of the task. Thanks to a holistic approach based on the use of an ATC microworld (Laby) and the use of physiologicalsensors we managed to assess several notification designs. Several experiments have been conducted, one using eye-tracking aimed at measuring attention capacity of five designs and their impact on theperformance of the task. The second used neurophysiologic data and aimed at measuring the impact oftwo designs on the work load. The assessed designs enabled to conceive a notification system integratedin a new radar supervision together with the task monitoring agent. The last experiment conducted in thecourse of this work aimed at measuring the impact of this new position of control whose design is situationawareness oriented, on the detection of critical problems. The obtained results show the relevance ofthese new tools and their positive impact on the performance of the task by controllers as well as the needto assess, in a controlled experimental context, the characteristics of notification designs for supervisionvisualization.

Criteria for evaluation of textbooks designed for english language teaching to brazilian air traffic controllers: a checklist proposal / Critérios de avaliação de livro didático para o ensino-aprendizagem de inglês para controladores de tráfego aéreo brasileiros: uma proposta de checklist

Elida Maria Rodrigues Bonifácio 27 May 2015 (has links)
Considering the need to improve the level of proficiency of air traffic controllers (ATCO) in the English language, in order to avoid incidents and accidents due to lack of proficiency, many language courses started offering English classes to those professionals. According to ICAO (2010), all ATCO must be approved in a specific proficiency exam, so that they can control international traffic. Nevertheless, the number of published textbooks in aviation English field is still low; therefore, choosing the most appropriate textbook becomes difficult due to the few options. The general objective of this paper is to contribute with researches in the field of textbook evaluation and Englisht learning and teaching. The specific objectives are: to set criteria in order to create a checklist to evaluate textbooks used in English language courses to air traffic controllers, based on criteria already found in the literature about textbook evaluation, adapting those criteria to what ICAO requirements and to the Proficiency Exam tasks; and to evaluate the book Aviation English using the checklist. The checklist criteria were created in the light of the Document 9835 (ICAO 2010), as well as in the light of the theories of language, Widdowson (1978), and others; the theory of English as a lingua franca of aviation, Oliveira E. (2007), Hülmbauer et al (2008), and others; the principles of language teaching and learning, Larsen-Freeman (2000), Brown (2007), and others; the tenets of English for Specific Purposes, Hutchinson and Waters (1987), Dudley-Evans and St. John (1998), and others; and the conception of materials development, Cunninsworth (1995), Tomlinson (1998; 2003), Mc Grath (2002), Dias (2007), and others. The checklist has as main categories the theoretical principles (language role and language teaching and learning), graphical features, lexical, grammatical and functional competences described in the Document 9835, support materials and English proficiency test preparation and it was subdivided into 117 items. The material evaluated by the means of the checklist fulfilled 71,8% of the checklist items in a positive way; on the other hand, 20,5% of the items were not identified in the material, and 7,7% of the items were partially identified in the textbook. Using the checklist to evaluate materials will enable professionals engaged in English teaching to air traffic controllers to choose the most appropriate textbook according to their audience, as well as to identify gaps in the book, in order to adapt the material, since there is no such thing as perfect material.

Factors affecting the career advancement of female air traffic controllers in the South African air traffic control industry

Fraser, Marisa 08 October 2012 (has links)
Research shows that although the representation of women in the workforce has increased over the past couple of decades, there are many industries that still remain male dominated. In addition, it is generally known that such male-dominated industries have minimal female representation at their managerial levels. One such male-dominated industry in South Africa is the air traffic control (ATC) industry. Women represent about 30 percent of the industry, which suggest their status in the industry is still quite low. The purpose of this study was to examine male and female air traffic controllers’ perceptions of factors that facilitate and constrain women’s career advancement, and to determine whether there were any significant differences in their opinions. The study also identified what male and female air traffic controllers (ATCOs) think the industry can do to help prepare women for leadership positions in the industry, and how to eliminate barriers that may exist to women’s career advancement. Data for this study were collected through an online questionnaire adapted from Zhong’s (2006) study on a convenience sample (N = 147) of male and female ATCOs in South Africa. The data analysis was executed by using factor analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Content analysis was used to analyse the two open-ended questions. The findings from the ANOVA suggest that there were four significant gender differences in perceptions of the Personal effort/External support, Attitude/Internal character, Equity, and Family issues. There also were significant differences in opinion on External support/Personal effort, Attitude/Internal character, Equity and Family issues, depending on the number of children the respondents had, and significant differences of marital status on the External support/Personal effort and Family issues. Finally, significant differences were found in the years’ experience variable for Attitude/Internal character. In response to the open-ended questions, most of the respondents suggested that the ATC industry should offer training programmes to improve awareness of possible barriers within the industry, as well as to offer advice on how to overcome them and improve their leadership skills. This could be done by creating programmes on the knowledge and skills needed to advance one’s career or by providing mentors or role models. Future research could compare the perceptions of employees from different race groups and their perceptions of women’s career advancement in male-dominated industries. It is also recommended that researchers conduct in-depth qualitative interviews together with the current questionnaire to evaluate perceptions of the career advancement of women more critically. / Dissertation (MCom)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Human Resource Management / unrestricted
