FACTORS THAT LEAD MILLENNIAL ALUMNI TO DONATE TO THEIR ALMA MATERMorgan, Robert Andrew 01 May 2014 (has links) (PDF)
This study examined the characteristics and predictors of Millennial alumni who donated financially to their alma mater and those who did not by reviewing data from the Alumni Attitude Survey (AAS). The data set was composed of 2,108 Millennial respondents and 1,110 as Generation X respondents. This study can help university foundation and alumni association staff members to determine why their donors, specifically Millennial alumni, give to their institution and how to be more effective in requesting for a financial donation from them. Generating consistent support from alumni and other donors is an economic necessity for postsecondary institutions. As current students graduate, institutions need to know how they can entice these alumni to provide financial support. This dissertation fills the gap in the literature by providing new research on the effect Millennial student involvement has on the likelihood they will become donors to their alma mater. This dissertation used Astin's (1984) involvement theory as a foundation for the research. The connection that alumni have with their alma maters and the outcome of donations after graduation may stem from the connections that these alumni established while involved in activities as undergraduates. Astin's involvement theory provides some insights into identifying the experiences that help to inspire alumni to donate financially and helps institutions identify and devise new ways of using these experiences to help increase donations. The positive emotional experiences from undergraduate involvement may be motivation to donate to one's alma mater. This study identified the involvement characteristics of undergraduate Millennial alumni donors, the differences between these donors and nondonors, and predictors of undergraduate Millennial alumni donor behavior. This study focused on the potential relationship between involvement and student satisfaction and subsequently, found statistically significant variables that influenced Millennial alumni to donate to their alma mater. Specifically, Millennial alumni who were involved in organizations that relate to peer involvement; such as fraternity/sorority involvement, participation in intramural athletics, community service, residence halls participation, and the alma mater providing or encouraging relationships with other students, encouraging the attendance at athletic events, providing student leadership opportunities and providing opportunities to interact with alumni relate to one donating to their alma mater. These variables were statistically significant, but they were also practically significant, meaning that the findings do make a difference in helping to identify factors that lead to Millennial alumni to donate to their alma mater. The findings in this dissertation reiterate the importance of student engagement on the campus. An institution's faculty and staff involvement with undergraduates, specifically those staff who work directly with student organizations, are vital for student engagement that lead to graduation and future donations as an alumnus.

Constraints on the gas temperature in the solaratmosphere from multiwavelength inversionsda Silva Santos, João Manuel January 2018 (has links)
In this Licentiate thesis I review the properties of the solar atmosphere and the diagnostic value ofdifferent spectral lines in the visible and ultraviolet (UV) along with the millimeter (mm) continua in theelectromagnetic spectrum of the Sun.While the solar atmosphere has been routinely observed in high-resolution from ground-based opti-cal telescopes such as the Swedish Solar Telescope (SST), and more recently in the UV from space tele-scopes such as the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), radio observations lag behind despitetheir great usefulness. This is likely to change thanks to the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA)that only started observing the Sun in 2016 with a few limitations, but the first results are promising.ALMA observations probe the solar chromosphere at different heights by tuning into slightly differentfrequencies at potentially milliarcsecond scales if the full array is able to operate with the longest base-lines. This new spectral window onto the Sun is expected to advance various fields of research suchas wave propagation and oscillations in the chromosphere, thermal structure of filaments/prominences,triggering of flares and microflares, and more generally chromospheric and coronal heating, because themm-intensities can be modelled by simply assuming local-thermodynamic equilibrium. In da Silva Santos et al. (2018) we find that coordinated observations from SST, IRIS and ALMA willpermit us to estimate with greater accuracy the full thermodynamical state of the plasma as a functionof optical depth based on experiments with a snapshot of a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamicsimulation of the Sun’s atmosphere. Particularly, the mm-continuum improves the accuracy of inferredtemperatures in the chromosphere. Here we expand on the Why and How this can be done. The goal isto better constrain the temperature stratification in the solar atmosphere in order to understand chromo-spheric heating.

Design and characterization of an 8gsps flash analog-to-digital converter for radio astronomy and cosmology applications / Conception et caractérisation d'un CAN Flash de fréquence d'échantillonnage de 8 Géchantillons/seconde pour des applications en radioastronomieRossoni Mattos, Diego 04 December 2012 (has links)
An Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) has been developed for astrophysical and cosmological applications. This class of circuits demands, especially in the millimeter wavelength domain, ultra wide bandwidths, ultra high sampling frequencies and a low resolution. The “flash” architecture has been chosen for its speed and bandwidth. This ADC samples at 8Gsps and it has been fabricated in 65nm CMOS technology from STMicroelectornics. The design has been done in two steps. The first was the prototype of a track-and-hold circuit. The second was the ADC. Both circuits have been characterized and from these results some perspectives for further improvements have been proposed. In order to achieve the final goal of the multi-bit ADC (6-bit resolution) we have decided to design a first prototype with half the final resolution, namely a 3-bit resolution ADC. Our idea was, with this first prototype, to conduct a first analysis of the behavior of the integrated functional blocks and, consequently, find the correct improvements required for the ADC final version.

Döden i bilderboken : En studie av ikonotexten hos Kitty CrowtherÖberg, Helena January 2017 (has links)
Abstract The picture book is a literary form in which verbal and visual elements are inextricably linked, how can this special aesthetics express death? Out of my readings of Kitty Crowthers three picture books on the topic of death; Moi et Rien (2000), La visite de petite mort (2004) and Annie du lac (2009) I have examined how visual representation and text combined create an aesthetic experience which mediate complicated psychological context, cultural behaving and human experience. In her picture books Crowther in various representations shows the unseen, immaterial and abstract phenomenon of death – depictions which can teach us how to live.

Art Song by Turn-of-the-Century Female ComposersClick, Sarah, D. 12 1900 (has links)
Whereas conditions have existed for many centuries which served to exclude or marginalize female participation in music, many women have written compositions of musical worth sufficient to justify their contemporary performance. Although most women composers wrote works more fitting for the "salon" than for the concert hall at the turn of the century, Boulanger and Mahler are representative of the few women composers whose complex approach to art song fell within the mainstream of the genre. Many of their accompaniments attain a level of technical difficulty not previously found in women composers' writing. They offer an interesting comparison between nationalities and styles in that they both favored Symbolist texts. However, each represents a different side of the coin in her musical interpretation of Symbolism: Boulanger, Impressionism, and Mahler, Expressionism. In addition, even though their styles involve opposite musical expressions, they both show a strong influence of Wagner in their writing. This study includes background on turn-of-the-century music and musicians encompassing the role of art song among women composers. Symbolism is addressed as it applies to the poets selected by the composers, followed by information regarding the specific musical representation of Symbolist texts in the composers' art songs. The chapter of analysis serves as a means to guide musical decisions in the actual performance of the works. The conclusion briefly discusses performance practice issues and the possibility of a turn-of-the-century feminine aesthetic.

Jardim, pedra, mar: um olhar arquetípico para a cidade / Garden, Stone, Sea: an archetypal look at the cityJorge, Denise Batista Pereira 20 April 2018 (has links)
In an effort to take psychology beyond the clinic, James Hillman rescued the platonic idea of anima mundi (soul of the world) and placed it at the base of his reflections on city and soul. In this perspective, not only human beings, but the world and the things of the world, including cities and places, have soul. To say that all things have soul means to say that through their sensorial presentation things exhibit their inner image, their presence as psychic reality, and are put at the disposal of our imagination. With these ideas in mind this researcher received a calling and got to know Jardim Pedramar, a neighborhood located on the outskirts of the city of Jacareí (SP), a part of the city that was chosen to carry out this research. Utilizing as a method the sensory ethnography, proposed by Sarah Pink, according to which the ethnographer acquires knowledge with his/her entire body, experimenting, the researcher lived closely with the local residents for three and a half years, recording via images everything they saw and experienced. The investigation culminated in the edition of the documentary \"Jardim Pedra MareAlma\" (Stone, Sea and Soul- Garden), in partnership with some local residents, whose production process ended up being an intervention via images. In this work, and in the documentary, one can see that in Jardim Pedramar people dance to Mozambique, compose songs and write poetry honoring the neighborhood, graffiti walls and take care of the environment, developing a cultural and residence heritage that helps them cope with lack of basic sanitation, schools, leisure equipment and a basic health unit. The residents of Jardim Pedramar cultivate the soul of the place, as they become involved with it. They pay attention to that territory of images and try to make sense of them. One can see in Jardim Pedramar that it is possible to combine vulnerability and happiness, two qualities of the soul that we rarely imagine to be present at the same time. Reflecting on this experience, in the light of analytical and archetypal psychology, it has been found that images in the world are a privileged means of accessing the soul of a place, since they allow a poetic and metaphorical look at their things, creating psychological culture and ways of living. Through this research, it was also possible to verify that sensorial ethnography is a methodology that allows us to study and understand the soul of a place
