Factors Affecting Parents' Decisions to Treat Their Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder with Complementary and Alternative Treatments

Autism affects approximately one in 110 children in the United States. Many parents choose to treat their children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with complementary and alternative (CAM) treatments. In this study, factors that contribute to parents' decisions to treat their child with ASD with a complementary or alternative (CAM) treatment were examined through the use of an online survey. Invitations to participate in the study were sent to approximately 800 support groups for parents of children with autism and information from 452 respondents was used in data analysis. Information regarding the impact of parental characteristics, children's behavioral symptoms, characteristics of specific CAM treatments, and possible barriers to treatment were obtained and analyzed. Overall, the responding parents/guardians were mothers, fathers, and grandmothers with a mean age of 41.58. The majority self-identified as White (86.7 percent), with 41.8 percent having attained a college education. The average income of respondents was $89,106.66. 100 percent of the participants in the study indicated they had tried a CAM in the past, or were currently using one. Results indicated a statistically significant relationship between severity of symptoms with having tried treatments in the past, and with currently using treatments. In addition, several specific treatments that were tried in the past and were currently being used were correlated with greater severity of symptoms. Severity of symptoms was not predictive of the total number of CAMs used. Educational level and marital status of parents were predictive of CAM use. In addition, individuals with a graduate level degree were more likely to use CAM than those with technical school/some college. Respondents who were married were significantly more likely to use CAMs than those who were divorced. Results indicated that accessibility and acceptance of treatments were predictive of CAM use. Possible barriers to treatment, as well as study limitations and implications, are also discussed. The findings of this study are important, as while the use of CAM treatments is growing among the population of children with autism, information regarding the reasons parents decide to use CAM treatments with their children with autism is relatively sparse.

Complementary Herbal and Alternative Drugs in Clinical Practice

TOPIC. Complementary and alternative medicine agents (CAMs). Purpose. To summarize the current empirical data about the major CAMs purporting to have psychotherapeutic value. Sources of information. Extant literature. Conclusions. Available evidence indicates that CAMs, while generally safe, are not risk free. While CAM use grows, nurses and other health professionals have a limited knowledge base about the action, side effects, and interactions of common CAM agents. Nurses need to increase their knowledge base about CAMs in order to help patients in decision making regarding the use of these agents to treat common psychiatric symptoms.

Conceiving Infertility: Negotiating the Biomedical Model

Thesis advisor: Stephen Pfohl / Assisted reproductive technologies have transformed the way medicine responds to infertility, as well as the ways those who go through difficulty conceiving understand their bodies and their experiences. In many capacities, however, the biomedical model is insufficient: recognition is contingent upon attempts to conceive, diagnosis is often imprecise or unexplained, and treatments strive for solutions without cures - and are frequently incapable of providing even the former. Interviews with 26 participants with current or recent histories of infertility revealed the ways they negotiate the biomedical model: 1) going beyond medical treatment in making lifestyle changes; 2) pursuing alternative treatments; 3) questioning doctors and playing active roles in determining courses of treatment; 4) using religion, spirituality, or magical thinking to develop other, non-bodily ways of controlling infertility; 5) extracting meaning from the experiences, infusing the objective idea of "disease" with subjective purpose; 6) building personal, alternate models that encompass a wide range of ways of thinking about infertility; and 7) directly challenging the scientific authority of the biomedical model, resisting the terms of treatment, or questioning the ability of medicine to offer them solutions. No participants showed pure compliance - as all included at least one of the negotiations - and none showed full resistance - as all had sought at least some medical treatments. Understanding these negotiations leads to a better concept of patient identity and the "illness" experience; it can inform policy in regards to prevention, education, and insurance mandates; and it better reveals who society permits to pursue parenthood in what ways. / Thesis (MA) — Boston College, 2009. / Submitted to: Boston College. Acceptance Toward the use of Micronutrients as an Alternative Treatment for Mood Disorders

The World Health Organisation predicts that by 2020 depression will be the second highest cause of death and disability in the world (World Health Organisation, 2010). Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been found to be the most suitable antidepressant for first-line treatment of a mood disorder (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, 2004), but less than half of all individuals achieve complete remission after therapy with a single antidepressant. Others display partial or intolerant responses to treatment (Nemeroff & Owens, 2002). This emphasises a need to develop alternative treatment options. There is evidence that micronutrients have fewer side effects than antidepressants (Dalmiya, Darnton-Hill, Schyltink & Shrimpton, 2009). Kaplan, Crawford, Field and Simpson (2007) suggest that errors in metabolism may result in unstable mood, leading to possible mood disorders. Mutation of metabolism is correctable by giving the malnourished individual additional vitamins thereby correcting metabolism and creating a more stable mood. An online survey completed by 661 participants (141 males, 520 females) assessed acceptance levels towards the use of micronutrients as an alternative treatment for mood disorders. As predicted, healthcare and medical professionals scored lower in acceptance (t(659)=3.12, p=0.002) and people who lead healthy lifestyles scored higher in acceptance (r=0.105, n=658, p <0.05). There were no significant effects of gender (t(659) =1.74, p=0.082), experience with mood disorders (F(3, 657)=0.86, p=0.46) or low household incomes (r=-0.066, n=661, p<0.05). Treatment users and providers alike seek more knowledge about the effectiveness of micronutrients and acceptance of micronutrients is largely granted on the basis of a combination treatment with conventional methods. The study is limited by an overrepresentation of females in the sample.

This diploma thesis deals with the experience of adult population with unconventional medicine. The thesis is conceived in two parts. The first part focuses on the theoretical definition of problems and familiarization with terms, the second part is research. The theoretical part is divided into several subchapters. The first is dealing with unconventional medicine. It describes the historical context from prehistoric times to present. Furthermore, the problems and pitfalls of today's medicine and its complementary existence. Diagnostic, therapeutic and self-help methods of alternative (unconventional) medicine are described in the next part. The practical part maps the experience of the adult population with unconventional medicine, the health problems for which the treatment is sought. It also identifies the type of therapy chosen and the motivation for choosing it. It also maps subjective success in treatment. The research in the practical part is done quantitatively by the anonymous questionnaire method.

Pineal Gland Abnormalities and the Relationship of Melatonin to the Development and Symptom Severity of Schizophrenia: An Integrative Review of the Literature

The purpose of this thesis is to critique the literature focusing on the role of pineal gland volume and function and the development of schizophrenia by asking the question, "What is the relationship between pineal gland physiologic function and development and symptom severity of schizophrenia? It is crucial that health care providers continue advocate for better understanding of schizophrenia in order to develop a more appropriate treatment and relive the suffering of those with schizophrenia. A review of published literature focusing on the pineal glands association with schizophrenia was performed using several databases including: ScienceDirect, PubMED, Google Scholar, Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Elton B. Stephens Co. (EBESCO). Key search terms included: Pineal gland, melatonin and schizophrenia, pineal gland and schizophrenia, sleep and schizophrenia, melatonin and treatment for schizophrenia, alternative treatments for schizophrenia, and pineal volume and schizophrenia. Based on current researching findings, it is my prediction that the chief consensus among the literature will be that physiologic abnormalities often coincided with schizophrenia, but do not indicate the severity of the disease or seem to have a strong correlation to the cause of the disease. It is also my prediction that alternative therapies will be beneficial in reducing symptoms severity, and adverse effects cause by psychiatric medications.

Evaluation of alternatives to synthetic fungicides to control citrus postharvest diseases

Tesis por compendio / [EN] Citrus spp. (Rutaceae) are the most widely produced fruits and they are grown in over a hundred countries. During postharvest, major losses are caused by fungal diseases, that for decades have been controlled by treatments with synthetic fungicides. However, their use is continuously more restricted by distributors and supermarket chains, which lower the Maximum Residue Level (MRL) to one third of the authorized or even ban the use of certain fungicides. This has loss of efficacy of treatments and development of resistant strains of pathogens. Alternatives are necessary to substitute or combine the use of synthetic fungicides. The objective of the present work was to evaluate alternative treatments against green and blue molds, caused by Penicillium digitatum (Pers.: Fr.) Sacc. and Penicillium italicum Wehmer, respectively. Food additives and GRAS substances were tested in in vivo preliminary tests against green and blue molds. Potassium sorbate (PS) (Chapter 2) and sodium benzoate (SB) (Chapter 1) were the most effective. 60-s dips in 3% (w/v) SB above 50°C reduced by 90% green and blue mold incidence on 'Valencia' oranges after 7 days at 20°C. This treatment was also effective on 'Lanelate' oranges, 'Fino' lemons and 'Ortanique' mandarins, but not on 'Clemenules' mandarins. Heated solutions combining SB with low doses of imazalil (IMZ) were synergistic. In semi-commercial trials with 'Marisol' Clementine mandarins, the combination PS+IMZ at 20°C allowed a significant reduction of the IMZ doses still controlling green mold. A new colorimetric method that employed extraction of PS from macerated fruit, followed by reaction with 2-thiobarbituric acid (Chapter 3) showed that in oranges treated with PS and stored at 15°C, residues declined initially rapidly and later more slowly, until residues stopped declining after 6 d. A brief double-dip rinse in tap water, immediately after immersion of lemons in a 2% (w/v) PS, removed more than 90% of PS residue. Exposure at 33ºC with 15 kPa CO2 for 24 h or 30 kPa O2 for 48 h effectively controlled both green and blue molds after 7 days of incubation at 20ºC, but control of both diseases lowered after 15 days (Chapter 4). Combining PS dip treatments with gas exposure showed a synergistic effect, that maintained the efficacy of combined treatments during 15 days. In cold storage, after 14, 28, and 42 days, green mold incidence on 'Clemenules' and 'Ortanique' mandarins treated with PS dips and 30kPa O2 for 48h was reduced by 100, 96 and 68%, and 100, 97 and 79%, respectively. Again, a synergistic effect between treatments was observed (Chapter 5). Postharvest green mold and blue molds were effectively controlled by fumigation of lemons and oranges for 6 h at 22ºC with two applied dosages of 3000 ¿L L-1 of ammonia that was injected initially and again 2 h later (Chapter 6). Ammonia fumigation controlled an IMZ-resistant isolate of P. digitatum. When fruit were first immersed in 10 or 30 mg L-1 IMZ (about 10% of typical commercial rates) before ammonia fumigation, a single fumigation with 1500 ¿L L-1 of ammonia was adequate to control both diseases and the increase in effectiveness was additive or synergistic. All these treatments, at different degrees, could replace synthetic fungicides or augment IMZ performance in citrus postharvest decay management. The development of green and blue molds on the most commercially important citrus species and cultivars was assessed for four consecutive harvest seasons and associated with fruit quality parameters (Chapter 7). Fruit susceptibility of the cultivars to green mold in increasing order was Nova, Sanguinelli, Ortanique, Lanelate, Navelate, Fortune, Clemenules, Valencia, W. Navel, Oronules, Clemenpons, Marisol, Salustiana, Hernandina, and Nadorcott. Peel characteristics were the most influencing quality parameters on the susceptibility of citrus fruit to green and blue molds. / [ES] Los cítricos (Citrus spp. fam. Rutaceae) son la fruta más consumida a nivel mundial y se cultivan en más de un centenar de países. Durante el manejo en poscosecha, la mayor parte de las pérdidas se deben a enfermedades fúngicas, que durante décadas se han controlado mediante tratamientos con fungicidas de síntesis. Sin embargo, su uso está continuamente más restringido por parte de los distribuidores y cadenas de supermercados, que reducen el Límite Máximo de Residuos (LMR) a un tercio del establecido o incluso prohíben el uso de ciertos fungicidas. Esto ha provocado la pérdida de eficacia de los tratamientos y el desarrollo de cepas de patógenos resistentes a los fungicidas. Se necesitan pues alternativas para sustituir o combinar con el uso de fungicidas de síntesis. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar tratamientos alternativos contra las podredumbres verde y azul, causadas por Penicillium digitatum (Pers.: Fr.) Sacc. y Penicillium italicum Wehmer, respectivamente. Aditivos alimentarios y sustancias GRAS se probaron en test in vivo preliminaries contra los mohos verde y azul. El benzoato sódico (BS; Capítulo 1) y el sorbato potásico (SP; Capítulo 2) fueron los más eficaces. Baños de 60 s en 3% (p/v) BS sobre 50°C redujeron en un 90% la incidencia de las podredumbres verde y azul en naranjas 'Valencia Late' tras 7 días a 20°C. Estos tratamientos fueron también efectivos en naranjas 'Lanelate', limones 'Fino' y mandarinas híbridas 'Ortanique', pero no en mandarinas 'Clemenules'. La combinación de baños calientes de BS con dosis bajas de imazalil (IMZ) fueron sinérgicas. Un nuevo método colorimétrico que empleó la extracción del SP de la fruta macerada, seguido de una reacción con ácido 2-tiobabitúrico (Capítulo 3) mostró que en naranjas tratadas con SP almacenadas a 15°C, los residuos descendieron rápidamente al inicio y lentamente más tarde, hasta que dejaron de descender tras 6 días. Un doble aclarado rápido con agua corriente inmediatamente después de la inmersión de limones en SP al 2% (p/v), eliminó más del 90% del residuo de SP. Los choques gaseosos a 33ºC y 15kPa CO2 durante 24 h o 30 kPa O2 durante 48 h controlaron de manera eficaz las podredumbres verde y azul tras 7 días de incubación a 20ºC, pero el control de las dos podredumbres descendió tras 15 días (Capítulo 4). En almacenamiento en frío, tras 14, 28 y 42 días, la incidencia de moho verde en mandarinas 'Clemenules' y 'Ortanique' tratadas con baños con SP y 30kPa O2 durante 48h se redujo en un 100, 96 y 68%, y 100, 97 y 79%, respectivamente. De nuevo, una fuerte sinergia se observó entre los tratamientos (Capítulo 5). Las podredumbres verde y azul se controlaron eficazmente mediante la fumigación de limones y naranjas durante 6 h a 22ºC con dos dosis de 3000 ¿L L-1 amoniaco, inyectadas al inicio del tratamiento y 2 h después (Capítulo 6). La susceptibilidad de los cultivares en orden creciente fue Nova, Sanguinelli, Ortanique, Lanelate, Navelate, Fortune, Clemenules, Valencia, W. Açò ha provocat la minora de l'eficàcia dels tractaments poscollita i el desenvolupament de soques dels patògens resistents als fungicides. Es necessari per lo tant trobar i implementar alternatives per a substituir o combinar l'ús de fungicides de síntesi. L'objectiu d'aquest treball ha sigut avaluar tractaments alternatius contra les podridures verda i blava, causades per Penicillium digitatum (Pers.: Fr.) Sacc. i Penicillium italicum Wehmer, respectivament. Additius alimentaris i substàncies GRAS es provaren en test in vivo preliminars contra les podridures verda i blava. El benzoat sòdic (BS; Capítol 1) i el sorbat potàsic (SP; Capítol 2) foren els més eficaços. Solucions calentes de BS combinades amb baixes dosis d'imazalil (IMZ) foren sinèrgiques. Esta combinació va reduir l'incidència de les podridures verda i blava en quasi el 100% en taronges 'Valencia Late' després de 8 setmanes a 5°C i 7 dies a 20°C. En assajos semicomercials mandarines 'Marisol', la combinació SP+IMZ a 20°C va permetre una baixada significativa de la dosis de IMZ sense perdre eficàcia contra la podridura verda. Un nou mètode colorimètric que inclou l'extracció del SP de la fruita macerada, seguit d'una reacció amb àcid 2-tiobabitúric (Capítol 3) mostrà que en taronges tractades amb SP conservades a 15°C, els residus descendiren ràpidament al inici i lentament mes tard, fins que deixaren de descendir després de 6 dies. Un doble rentat ràpid amb aigua corrent immediatament després de d'immersió de llimones en SP al 2% (p/v), eliminà més del 90% del residu de SP. Els xocs gasosos a 33ºC i 15kPa CO2 durant 24 h o 30 kPa O2 durant 48 h controlaren de manera eficaç les podridures verda i blava després de 7 dies d'incubació a 20ºC, però el control de les dos podridures descendí després de 15 dies (Capítol 4). La combinació de banys amb SP i xocs gasosos mostrà un efecte sinèrgic, que mantingué l'eficàcia dels tractaments combinats durant 15 dies. En conservacions en fred, després de 14, 28 i 42 dies, d'incidència de podridura verda en mandarines 'Clemenules' i 'Ortanique' tractades en banys amb SP i 30kPa O2 durant 48h es reduí en un 100, 96 i 68%, i 100, 97 i 79%, respectivament. De nou, una forta sinergia s'observà entre els tractaments (Capítol 5). Les podridures verda i blava es controlaren eficaçment mitjançant la fumigació de llimones i taronges durant 6 h a 22ºC amb dos dosis de 3000 ¿L L-1 amoníac, injectades al inici del tractament i 2 h després (Capítol 6). El tractament amb amoníac controlà una soca de P. digitatum amb un alt nivell de resistència a IMZ. Tots estos tractaments, a diferents nivells, podrien substituir als fungicides de síntesis o augmentar l'eficàcia dels tractaments amb IMZ en el maneig poscollita dels cítrics. El desenvolupament de les podridures verda i blava en les especies y varietats de cítrics més importants comercialment s'avaluà durant quatre campanyes consecutives i es relacionà amb els paràmetres de qualitat de la fruita (Capítol 7). La susceptibilitat dels distints cultivars en ordre creixent fon Nova, Sanguinelli, Ortanique, Lanelate, Navelate, Fortune, Clemenules, Valencia, W. Análise do desempenho de gotejadores e da prevenção do entupimento em irrigação com água residuária / Emitter performance analysis and clogging prevention in irrigation with wastewater&#39;s use.

O uso de águas residuárias para irrigação vem sendo amplamente estudado e recomendado por diversos pesquisadores em todo o mundo como alternativa viável para atender as necessidades hídricas e, em grande parte, nutricionais das plantas e como forma de proteção ambiental. A presente pesquisa teve por objetivo principal avaliar o desempenho de dois tipos distintos de gotejadores, labirinto que é vastamente utilizado em projetos de irrigação e microtubo que possui um custo sensivelmente menor, mas não é tão largamente utilizado. Pretendeu-se ainda avaliar o desempenho de diferentes tratamentos de água residuária, convencionais e alternativos, principalmente quanto à prevenção de entupimento dos emissores: filtração rápida de areia e disco; filtração lenta da água com enriquecimento por injeção de dióxido de carbono e filtração lenta com posterior desinfecção por radiação ultravioleta. Uma quarta parcela de irrigação foi abastecida com água potável, a fim de se comparar o efeito da água residuária na produção da cultura irrigada (pimentão). Objetivou-se também avaliar parâmetros físicos, químicos e biológicos de qualidade dos diferentes tipos de água utilizados na irrigação do pimentão e sua produtividade. Foram realizados três experimentos distintos entre maio de 2005 a março de 2006, permitindo a condução de dois ciclos da referida cultura em ambiente protegido, além de ensaios hidráulicos em laboratório e em casa de vegetação. O delineamento experimental empregado foi num esquema fatorial (4 x 2). Foram considerados dois fatores de estudo: tipos de gotejadores (em dois níveis) e tipos de água (em quatro níveis). Após a realização dos 3 experimentos propostos pode-se concluir que: os gotejadores do tipo labirinto e microtubos apresentaram desempenho similares para um intervalo de pressão de serviço entre 90 e 110 kPa; os resultados das análises da água residuária utilizada no segundo experimento comprovaram a viabilidade técnica de seu uso em irrigação por gotejamento e a eficácia dos tratamentos empregados; a filtração lenta apresentou remoção média de sólidos suspensos de 90,2% e 81,8% de turbidez da água, destacando-se na segunda repetição experimental; os métodos de desinfecção da água por ultravioleta e enriquecimento da água com dióxido de carbono apresentaram resultados expressivos na remoção média de E. coli e DBO5 na segunda repetição experimental; o tratamento com radiação ultravioleta removeu 100% dos bactérias e reduziu 50,1% a matéria orgânica da água; para as duas repetições experimentais do segundo experimento, não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre os dois tipos de gotejadores, considerando-se os valores de uniformidade estatística (US) e uniformidade de emissão (EU) obtidos; em relação aos índices de produtividade do pimentão destacaram-se os tratamentos irrigados com água residuária; pelos resultados obtidos no terceiro experimento, ficou comprovada a maior sensibilidade ao entupimento dos microtubos em relação aos gotejadores do tipo labirinto utilizados nesta pesquisa. / The use of wastewater in irrigation systems is becoming widely studied and recommended by many researchers all over the world as a viable alternative to attend water and nutrients plants necessities and to act as an environmental protector. This study was conducted to investigate and evaluate the performance of two kinds of emitters, labyrinth-type that is widely used in irrigations projects and spaghetti tubing that has a lower cost, but is not so used. Also it pretended to evaluate the performance of some wastewater treatments, conventional and alternatives, mainly to prevent emitters clogging: rapid sand filtration plus disc filters; slow sand filtration with dioxide carbon injection on water and slow sand filtration plus ultraviolet radiation disinfection. A fourth subunit was irrigated with potable fresh water to compare the wastewater effect on peppers production. Another subject of the present research was the evaluation of physics, chemical and biological parameters of quality from different kinds of water used on peppers irrigation and its productivity. Three experiments were conducted within 2005 may and 2006 march, allowing the realization of two cycles of the culture inside a greenhouse and some hydraulic tests both in laboratory and in greenhouse. The experimental statistic design was a 4x2 factorial. Two factors were considered: kinds of emitters (in two levels) and different types of water (in four levels). The results of the present study suggested that: labyrinth-type and spaghetti-tubing emitters had similar performance in a pressure range of 90 &#150; 110 kPa; the results of wastewater analyses assured technical viability of its use in drip irrigation systems and good uniformity efficiency of the experimental treatments; slow sand filtration presented 90,2% average removal of suspended solids and 81,8% of water turbidity, detaching on the second phase; both complementary water treatments (UV and CO2) presented expressive results of average removal of E. coli and DBO5 in the second phase; ultraviolet radiation reactor removed 100% of E. coli and 50,1% of organic matters on water; there were observed no significant difference between the emitters used in both phases of the second experiment and both Us and EU coefficients; betters levels of production were obtained with the use of wastewater. The third experiment assured the greater clogging sensibility of spaghetti-tubing when compared with labyrinth-type.

Acceptability of alternative treatments for problematic gambling.

Background & objective Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) have been the treatment of choice for problem or pathological gambling in the field in Western countries, and their efficacy has been supported by a considerable empirical research. Alternative treatments are little known; and such treatments for minority ethnic populations have been scarce. This study adopted Kazdin‘s procedures for assessing the acceptability of treatments (Kazdin, 1980a, 1980b, 1981) to test alternative treatments of problem or pathological gambling as a part of the broadening of treatment choices. This thesis presented 2009 survey results from counselling service providers in New Zealand on the acceptability of alternative treatments to problem or pathological gambling. The thesis, therefore, reports the responses of counsellors to counselling vignette case examples, not the views of actual clients viewing counselling. Methods The survey pack was distributed to counselling service providers in New Zealand. The survey included descriptions of sixteen vignettes of case examples of counselling treatments. Categories of clients in the vignette case examples included two genders (male, female) and three ethnicities (Pakeha, Maori, and Asian). Four counselling treatment conditions were selected from Solution-Focused Brief Counselling (SFBC), SFBC+Multicultural Counselling (SFBC+MC), Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). CBT and MI were only administered to Pakeha clients for the purpose of comparison of the alternatives. Two measurements were used. The first a modified Problem Gambling Treatment Evaluation Inventory (TEI) was used to measure the acceptability levels of the alternative treatments for problem or pathological gambling. The Cross-Cultural Counselling Inventory-Revised (CCCI-R) was used for measuring the perceived cross-cultural competency of counsellors depicted in the vignette case examples. Findings Counsellors‘ ratings of the vignette case examples revealed the following findings: Measurement 1: Problem Gambling Treatment Evaluation Inventory (TEI). Overall, 1) The survey results of TEI questionnaires showed significant main effects across the four treatment conditions and the three client ethnicities, and there was no difference according to client genders. 1.1) SFBC+MC and SFBC were slightly more acceptable than CBT, and much more acceptable than MI. 1.2) The TEI scores for Pakeha clients were much higher than for Maori clients, and the scores for the Asian clients were in between. 2) There was a significant interaction effect between the four treatments and the three client ethnicities. 2.1) For Maori clients: SFBC+MC was much more acceptable than SFBC; for Pakeha clients: SFBC+MC was the most acceptable, closely followed by SFBC, CBT, then MI; and for Asian clients: SFBC was more acceptable than SFBC+MC. 2.2) SFBC+MC was most acceptable to Maori clients across all treatments and ethnic groups. 2.3) The variation in acceptability ratings for SFBC was larger than for SFBC+MC in Maori and Asian clients, and less variable in Pakeha. 2.4) Maori clients had the largest mean variation between SFBC and SFBC+MC, and Pakeha clients had the smallest mean variation. Measurement 2: Cross-Cultural Counselling Inventory-Revised (CCCI-R). The survey results of the CCCI-R showed significant main effects across the four treatment conditions and the three ethnicities. 1) The counsellors depicted in the vignette case examples under the SFBC+MC treatment condition were rated with the highest mean competence score and least variability across all the treatments and the ethnicities, the MI treatment condition were rated with the lowest mean score, CBT and SFBC were in between. 2) The counsellors described in the vignette case examples were rated more culturally competent with Pakeha clients and Maori clients than with Asian clients in the vignette case examples, the rating levels for both Pakeha and Maori were similar. 3) The Maori client in the vignette case examples had the largest mean gap between SFBC and SFBC+MC, and Pakeha client in the vignette case examples had the smallest mean gap. Clinical implications The tests of the acceptability of alternative treatment for problem or pathological gambling could provide useful information about 1) whether the above alternatives would be recommended or selected by the counselling service providers in their clinical practice, 2) which treatment would be more/less preferred by which ethnic group, 3) whether it would work or be worth the efforts to introduce or promote the above alternatives to the counselling service providers, 4) what needs to be explored for increasing levels of the acceptability of alternative treatment to problem or pathological gambling, 5) adding training in the techniques to counsellors training programme and curricula. The limitation of this study was discussed and future research was suggested.
