A Lifestyle Modification Toolkit to Increase Physical Activity Among Young Adults

Nwanna, Anthonia Ninikanwa 01 January 2019 (has links)
Substantial decreases in physical activity have been observed between early to late adolescence in males and females, with decreases in levels of activity into adulthood. Physical inactivity among young adults leads to medical conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, stroke, ischemic heart disease, falls resulting in hip fractures, and depression later in life. Advanced Nurse Practitioners have a significant impact on the problem of physical inactivity among young adults through education to improve knowledge regarding physical activity participation. The focus of this project was to develop a toolkit on lifestyle modification as a resource for physical education teachers and nurses to increase physical activity participation and to decrease sedentary behaviors among young adults. The project practice question asked whether an evidence-based toolkit would address the identified needs of improving lifestyle diet and physical activity in young adults. Pender’s health promotion model guided the planning and development of the project. The Computer Attitude Questionnaire together with the 3-Day Physical Activity Recall was used during a needs assessment. Feedback from the survey was included in the development of the toolkit. A 5-item survey was given to 5 content experts who evaluated the toolkit. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to obtain a content validity index score of 1.00. Findings show universal agreement about the content of the toolkit as a resource for physical education teachers and school nurses to encourage physical activity participation in young adults. The implications of project findings for positive social change include the potential to increase the involvement of young adults in activities that improve the lives of the individual.

Konsensuální násilí jako kulturní prvek sexuality / Consensual Violence as a Cultural Element of Sexuality

Špráchalová, Lucie January 2021 (has links)
The present doctoral thesis is focused on consensual forms of sexual violence. In both theoretical and empirical aspects, it is based on existing information available in Czech as well as foreign research. Furthermore, this thesis utilises general findings of research on partner violence, as this topic has a long tradition at the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Arts at Charles University. The selected topic is understood as a social phenomenon that is gradually becoming a part of culture. It includes a number of medical, psychological and legal aspects; the sociological approach, however, is central, both in employed methodology and in the utilisation of partial sociological theories. This thesis endeavours to assess to what extent the issue of consensual sexual violence becomes a part of culture and to what extent there is a shift from the sphere of intimate relationships and communities to a more or less open market environment and the Internet. Given the breadth of scope and the highly specific nature of the topic, the present thesis makes use of several sources of both quantitative and qualitative data from 2015- 2019. The paper explores in detail especially the attitudes and the degree of tolerance in the Czech population towards selected forms of violence, including consensual...

Obesity, Food Insecurity, and Depression among Females

Ahuja, Manik, Sathiyaseelan, Thiveya, Wani, Rajvi J., Fernandopulle, Praveen 17 September 2020 (has links)
Background: Nutritional psychiatry is an emerging field of research and it is currently exploring the impact of nutrition and obesity on brain function and mental illness. Prior studies links between obesity, nutrition and depression among women. However, less is known how food insecurity may moderate that relationship. Methods: Data were employed from the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys (CPES), 2001-2003. Two logistic regression models were Logistic regression was used to determine the association between obesity, gender, food insecurity, and past year Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). We then stratified by gender, and tested the association between obesity and past year MDD, and if food insecurity moderated the association. Results: Obesity was associated with an increased risk for past year Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) among females (AOR = 1.35; 95% CI 1.17-1.55) and was not associated among males (AOR = 1.07; 95% CI, 0.86-1.32). Women who reported that reported both obesity and food insecurity reported higher odds of past year MDD episode (AOR = 3.16; 95% CI, 2.36-4.21, than women who did not report food insecurity (AOR = 1.08; 95% CI, 1.02-1.38). Conclusion: With rising rates of mental health problems, females should be closely monitored to understand how poor diets, food insecurity, and obesity play a role in mental health outcomes. It is recommended that clinicians and treatment providers consider the patient's diet and access to nutritious foods when conducting their assessment.

Brachytherapy and External Beam Radiation and Survival of Jamaicans With Prostate Cancer

Brown-Williams, Salome Elizabeth 01 January 2017 (has links)
Jamaican males are a high-risk population for aggressive prostate cancer (PrCa) due to genetic influences, and identifying empirical data on treatments, which provide survival benefits is a prime challenge for clinicians who manage Jamaican PrCa patients. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to elucidate treatment effects of brachytherapy and ERBT in the survival of a Jamaican PrCa cohort. Differences in survival outcomes of brachytherapy and ERBT treated Jamaican, and White U.S.-born PrCa patients with localized PrCa were compared. The mechanism of radiation programmed cell death in PrCa carcinogenesis explained in the oxidative stress theory, was the theoretical base for interpreting the research questions. A retrospective cohort design was used, and included survival analysis of secondary data from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results database. The sample size was 10,752 Jamaican and White U.S.-born prostate cancer patients diagnosed between 1992 and 2011. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazard regression models confirmed that brachytherapy resulted in enhanced survival benefits to the Jamaicans, HR 0.63, 95% CI [0.55, 0.73], p < .001, but ERBT did not, HR 1.6, 95% CI [1.38, 1.84] p < .001. Hence, brachytherapy may be an appropriate treatment option for Jamaican PrCa patients. Clinicians and health care planners can utilize the results for policy decisions aimed at increasing access to brachytherapy treatments to Jamaicans. Improving access to efficient PrCa treatments could reduce the morbidity and mortality rates of PrCa among Jamaicans, decrease years of potential life lost from PrCa, and enhance the life expectancy of the Jamaican male population.

Relationship Between Family Income and Obesity Among African American Adults

Boison, Charles Dadzie 01 January 2016 (has links)
Obesity is a chronic disease that is caused by a number of factors such as diet, genetics, physical inactivity, and poor dietary habits. This research focused on how income affects obesity among a target population in the African American community in Durham, North Carolina (NC). It has been noted that chronic diseases that are diet-related, for example, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol, affect African Americans disproportionately, especially those who earn low income. Some studies have also reported that those who make higher income have higher rates of obesity. This inconsistency and gap in the literature prompted research on this topic. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to study the relationship between family income and obesity among African Americans. The study sought to address the key factors that contribute to low family income among African Americans in Durham, NC and the ways in those key factors contribute to obesity among African Americans in Durham, NC. This study implored a qualitative approach by using an individual interview method to glean the lived experiences of participants in Durham, NC. Thirty participants were interviewed and themes from the interviews were analyzed. The health belief model was chosen as the theoretical framework for this study to understand the data and explain beliefs, attitudes, and health behaviors. Key results indicated that low family income contributes to obesity. The study contributes to social change by recommending that policy makers advocate for an increase in national minimum wage, encourage educational approaches to prevent obesity, promote good eating habits, and promote adequate physical activity among African Americans.

Factors Impacting Body Mass Index of Hispanic Youth in a Weight Loss Program

Hartman, Elizabeth Maria 01 January 2015 (has links)
Youth obesity prevalence rates in the United States are trending down; however, for Hispanic youth, rates are increasing despite efforts toward a reduction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a culturally focused intervention program on weight reduction of Hispanic youth age 2 to 19 through examination of body mass index (BMI) percentile outcomes comparing age, gender, distance to program, time in program, and season of enrollment. Review of literature supports ecological and cultural approaches requiring behavior modification tailored to family and community as successful in decreasing youth obesity. However, researchers have yet to establish how various variables impact intervention outcomes making it difficult to determine what aspects of the cultural approach is effective. The epidemiology triangle and the social cognitive theory approach were used to relate to findings. Use of retrospective clinical archival participant data dating from November 7, 2008 to February 23, 2015 was analyzed through the use of various statistical applications. The analyses of this study indicated that only one age variable had significant results. The category for age 8 to12 had a significantly higher change in BMI than the other groups (p <.05) . This research has the potential to contribute to social change since it reveals that interventions tailored for the 8-12 age group may significantly improve the effectiveness of the program in reducing BMI percentile, thus decreasing obesity rates and associated disease along with morbidity and mortality. This knowledge can benefit educators, community collaborative efforts, practitioners, and other researchers.

”Jag hade varit jobbig fast snäll” : En kombinerad vinjett- och intervjustudie om anhörigkonsulenters yrkesroll samt deras resonemang gällande våld i nära relation bland äldre / ”I would have been tough but kind” : A combined vignette and interview study about the professional role of relative consultants and their thoughts on domestic violence among the elderly.

Jutered, My, Kalenius, Hannah January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the work of relative consultants by examining how they reason about situations that involve domestic violence among the elderly. This was done through a combined vignette and interview study where seven relative consultants were given two vignettes with follow-up questions. The empirics have been analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed three main themes which were: Violence among the elderly, The alliance with the relative and The professional role. The results were analyzed through a theoretical frame of reference that placed the professional role of the relative consultants in a welfare context and with the help of the theory of the working alliance. One conclusion was that the working alliance emerged as an important tool for the relative consultants and they had different methods for creating an alliance. At the same time, they needed to constantly balance between the relative's autonomy and ensure the safety of the elderly. Characteristic of their professional role were i.e. that they lacked the exercise of authority, which had an impact on their room for maneuver. In addition, the results were discussed in relation to the increasingly restrictive development of elderly care and what consequences this has had for relatives.
