[pt] ESTUDO DO EQUILÍBRIO DE PARTIÇÃO ÁGUA-ÓLEO DE SURFACTANTES DE NATUREZA IÔNICA E NÃO-IÔNICA / [en] STUDY OF THE WATER-OIL PARTITION BALANCE OF IONIC AND NON-IONIC SURFACTANTSANA CECILIA ARCANJO DA SILVA 29 September 2022 (has links)
[en] Chemical injection, mainly of surfactants, is one of the most used methods
for improved oil recovery. One of the main limitations of this method is the loss
due to partitioning of the surfactant into the oil present in the reservoir. The study
of the water-oil partition balance of surfactant formulations becomes relevant due
to the existing loss in the reservoirs, affecting the economic and environmental
unfeasibility of the application. The objective of this work was to determine the
partition coefficient of surfactants between the water and oil phases using different
analytical methods. The surfactants sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS,
anionic type) and polyoxyethylene (9-10) p-teroctyl phenol (Triton X-100, nonionic type) were studied, and hexadecane was used as model oil. In order to identify
which would be the best procedure for the quantification of surfactants in the
aqueous phase and, therefore, to determine the partition coefficient, three
quantification methodologies were developed using different techniques
(interfacial tension measurements, UV-Vis absorbance measurements, and HPLC
with UV detection). Initial solubility tests showed that SDBS is practically
insoluble in the presence of salt, so experiments with this surfactant were only
carried out in the absence of salt. For both surfactants, the results showed a low
partition for the oil phase, both in the absence and in the presence of salt. In some
solutions, the formation of emulsions was identified due to the surfactant
concentration and the water/oil ratio used, which interfered with the
spectrophotometric method. In addition, a comparison was established between the
results obtained by the developed methodologies, which allowed to identify that the
best method for the evaluation of the partition equilibrium was the high
performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). From these results, it can be
concluded that the studied surfactants have a low partition coefficient for the oil
phase, making the chemical injection method favorable for advanced oil recovery.

Mathematical modeling of childhood obesity from a social epidemic point of view for the spanish region of Valencia: numerical and analytical solutionsGonzález Parra, Gilberto Carlos 22 October 2009 (has links)
This thesis dissertation deals with the mathematical modeling of childhood obesity from a social
epidemic point of view for the Spanish region of Valencia. Three mathematical models based on systems of
nonlinear ordinary differential equations of first order were constructed. The first one is constructed for simulating childhood obesity for the 3-5 years old population. For this model a nonstandard scheme based on the techniquesn developed by Ronald Mickens is constructed. This model is simulated with real data and the results show an increasing trend of obesity for the next years. The second model is an age-structured model developed in order to study the influence of age stages in the obesity population dynamics. This model considers overweight and obese in the groups 6-8 and 9-12 years old. Based on the numerical simulations of different scenarios it is shown that the prevention of children obesity in early years is of paramount importance. Therefore public health strategies should be designed as soon as possible to reduce the worldwide social obesity epidemic. The last model considers seasonal fluctuations of obesity prevalence using a nonautonomuos system of nonlinear of ordinary differential equations and we show that their solutions are periodic using a Jean Mawhin's Theorem of Coincidence. To corroborate the analytical results and perform numerical simulations, multistage Adomian and differential transformation methods are implemented. Numerical solutions using these methods are compared with those produced using Runge-Kutta type schemes. These implemented methods ensure good approximations using larger step sizes. / González Parra, GC. (2009). [pt] ESTRATÉGIAS DE APROXIMAÇÕES ANALÍTICAS HIERÁRQUICAS DE PROBLEMAS NÃO LINEARES: MÉTODOS DE PERTURBAÇÃO / [en] STRATEGIES OF HIERARCHICAL ANALYTICAL APPROXIMATIONS OF NON-LINEAR PROBLEMS: PERTURBATION METHODSMARIANA GOMES DIAS DOS SANTOS 29 April 2019 (has links)
dinâmicas do problema.
Entretanto, as
a solução desse problema.
[en] Dynamical problems governed by non-linear initial value problems
(IVP), in general, are of great interest of the scientific community. The
knowledge of the solution of these IVPs facilitates the understanding of the
dynamic characteristics of the problem. However, unfortunately, many of
the IVPs of interest does not present a known solution. In this case, an
alternative is to calculate approximations for the solution. Numerical and
analytical methods are efficient in this assignment and can provide approximations
with the desired precision. Numerical methods have been developed
over the last years and have been widely applied to dynamical problems in
various engineering areas. Computational packages, easy to use, were created
and today are part of the most traditional numerical simulation programs.
However, numerical approximations have a disadvantage in relation
to analytical approaches. They do not allow the understanding of how the
solution depends on the problem parameters. Given this, this dissertation
focuses on the analysis and implementation of analytical techniques called
perturbation methods. The Lindstedt-Poincaré method and multiple time
scales method were studied. The methodologies were applied in an IVP involving
the non-damped Duffing equation. Symbolic algebra programs were
developed with the purpose of calculating hierarchical analytical approximations
to the solution of this problem. A parametric analysis was performed,
in other words, a study of how the approximations are influenced by initial
conditions and parameter values. In addition, the analytical approximations
obtained were compared with numerical approximations calculated using
the Runge-Kutta method. The multiple scales method was also applied in a
IVP that represents the dynamics of a mass-spring-damper oscillator with
dry friction. Due to friction, the system response can be characterized in
two alternating phases, the stick phase and the slip phase, composing a phenomenon
called stick-slip. It was verified that the approximations obtained
for system response by the multiple scales method represent the stick-slip
dynamics with good accuracy.

[en] In recent years, considerable growth in demand for alternative energy sources justifies the investments made in the construction of wind farms, since wind energy appears to bring the least impact on the environment. Wind energy is generated from wind action, a source of renewable energy, totally clean and inexhaustible. Wind towers are built in huge parks with a defined distance between them. The higher the wind towers are, the better their performance, since we have the maximum use of the wind which is stronger and less turbulent at great heights. The materials used in the manufacture of wind towers are basically steel, reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete. The towers are usuallyin most cases, with circular or annular section. However, we should pay attention in a special way on the foundation of the wind tower, which should be designed and detailed to ensure the integrity of the structure as a whole. In this context, this dissertation aims to present the calculations required for the preliminary design or design verification of the foundation of wind turbines. Preliminary design and design evaluations were reviewed and evaluated to obtain a better understanding of the functioning of such structural elements. A spreadsheet was created using the Excel program, which performs the calculations of its foundation through analytical solutions. For the purpose of proving the accuracy of the worksheet results, some examples are presented and calculated from the created spreadsheet, and checked and compared to results obtained from an independent finite element analysis program. Stability and dynamics aspects of circular plates are also discussed.

[en] ANALYSIS OF THE COMPUTATIONAL COST OF THE MONTE CARLO METHOD: A STOCHASTIC APPROACH APPLIED TO A VIBRATION PROBLEM WITH STICK-SLIP / [pt] ANÁLISE DO CUSTO COMPUTACIONAL DO MÉTODO DE MONTE CARLO: UMA ABORDAGEM ESTOCÁSTICA APLICADA A UM PROBLEMA DE VIBRAÇÕES COM STICK-SLIPMARIANA GOMES DIAS DOS SANTOS 20 June 2023 (has links)
dinâmica do problema: NV) aproximações numéricas calculadas usando
método de Runge-Kutta de quarta e quinta ordens com passo de integração variável;
computacional.
[en] One of the objectives of this thesis is to analyze the computational
cost of the Monte Carlo method applied to a toy problem concerning
the dynamics of a mechanical system with uncertainties in the friction
force. The system is composed by an oscillator placed over a moving
belt. The existence of dry friction between the two elements in contact
is considered. Due to a discontinuity in the frictional force, the resulting
dynamics can be divided into two alternating phases, called stick and slip.
In this study, a parameter of the dynamic friction force is modeled as
a random variable. Uncertainty propagation is analyzed by applying the
Monte Carlo method, considering three different strategies to compute
approximations to the initial value problems that model the system s
dynamics: NV) numerical approximations computed with the Runge-Kutta
method of 4th and 5th orders, with variable integration time-step; NF)
numerical approximations computed with the Runge-Kutta method of 4th
order, with a fixed integration time-step; AN) analytical approximation
obtained with the multiple scale method. In the NV and NF strategies, for
each parameter value, a numerical approximation was calculated, whereas
for the AN strategy, only one analytical approximation was calculated and
evaluated for the different values of parameters considered. The run-time
and the storage are among the random variables of interest associated with
the computational cost of the Monte Carlo method. Due to uncertainty
propagation, the system response is a stochastic process given by a random
sequence of stick and slip phases. This sequence can be characterized by the
following random variables: the transition instants between the stick and
slip phases, their durations and the number of phases. To study the random
processes and the variables related to the computational costs, statistical
models, normalized histograms and scatterplots were built. Afterwards, a
joint analysis was performed to study the dependece between the variables of
the random process and the computational cost. However, the construction
of these analyses is not a simple task due to the impossibility of viewing
the distributionto of joint distributions of random vectors of three or more.
