Aquesta Tesi doctoral s’inscriu en el si de l’anàlisi de les fonts demogràfiques i té com a objectiu principal l’estudi de l’origen, evolució i anàlisi crítica dels continguts de les estadístiques del Movimento Natural de la Población (MNP) a Espanya per al període 1858 a 1974 per als tres esdeveniments vitals per als quals proporciona informació: naixements, matrimonis i defuncions. En primer lloc es situa l’origen i els estadis inicials d‘aquesta font en el marc del procés d’arrencada i consolidació dels serveis d’estadística oficials a Espanya i el mateix Registre civil i, en segon lloc, es presenten i s’analitzen els continguts de la font en les successives publicacions, fet que ha portat a estructurar el treball en dos grans blocs. El primer bloc consta de dos capítols. Un de caràcter introductori, en què es defineix breument el concepte de font estadística i es fa un repàs, també breu, de les principals fonts estadístiques d’informació demogràfica a Espanya, amb l’objectiu de destacar els trets característics del Moviment Natural de la Població en oposició a la resta de fonts. A més, en aquest capítol es fa referència al naixement i evolució dels serveis d’estadística oficial a Espanya, la història dels quals està estretament vinculada als orígens del MNP. La fragilitat inicial associada a la implantació d’un servei d’estadística oficial a Espanya tingué repercussions en el funcionament del MNP. En el segon capítol es defineix la font i s’explica la seva creació i evolució històrica a partir de mitjans del segle XIX, posant especial èmfasi en les principals transformacions que ha experimentat com, per exemple, la substitució del registre parroquial pel Registre civil. En segon lloc, s’analitzen els canvis en l’estructura de la publicació, és a dir, en la presentació formal dels resultats. Finalment, s’estudia i es detalla el procés i el procediment de recollida la informació, així com els diferents informes estadístics emprats per a la captació i transmissió de les dades. El segon bloc està format per un sol capítol dividit en tres subapartats, un per cada tipus d’esdeveniment: naixements, matrimonis i defuncions. Hi ha, però, un petit apartat previ, de caràcter transversal, en el que es fa referència a aspectes com la cobertura i referenciació geogràfica de la informació i la desagregació temporal de les dades. L’estructura dels apartats corresponents a cadascun dels fenòmens és la mateixa en els tres casos. En primer lloc, es defineixen els conceptes claus i les variables recollides en cada àmbit i, en segon lloc, es presenten els creuaments i la informació disponible a les publicacions. / This doctoral thesis aims to analyze vital demographic sources, especially the description and critical analysis of the origin, evolution and contents of the Spanish vital statistics system: Movimiento Natural de la Población (MNP). The MNP offers data for three events: births, marriages and deaths. The temporal scope of the thesis is from 1858 to 1974. The thesis is organized in two broad parts. The first one is about the origin and the early stages of this statistical source, in relation with the foundation of Civil Registry, describing also the initial and consolidation processes of the public statistical services in Spain. In the second part, for each vital event, the temporal change in the key concepts, the main variables of the source and their cross-tabulations is presented

Echoing Edward Said’s Orientalism, and Homi Bhabha’s notion of the stereotype as mimicry (camouflage), this research project investigates the recent construction of a Muslim male identity as the Other and Self-Othering following the destruction by al- Qaeda of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, referred to colloquially as ‘post-9/11’. The fear of a bearded Muslim terrorist, of attacks from Muslim fundamentalist organizations, the distrust leading to extreme security measures and the subsequent laws contributing to the discrimination and radicalization of the Muslim community are analysed. This research identifies and explains the myths surrounding the Muslim cultural and religious practices relating to the traditional appearance of a Muslim male, specifically the beard and marks of prostration, along with associated imagery derived from the prayer rug, Muslim worship, Salat, and the mosque. Beehive metaphors in Western and Muslim art, history, literature and media are explored. The dualistic concepts surrounding the stereotypes and personifications that result in ‘otherness’ are the key aspects of this research. Using the binary nature of beehive metaphors, as well as both cultures’ propaganda about the West’s Crusade and Islam’s Jihad, the making of a post-9/11 Muslim identity as jihadi, martyr and terrorist are investigated, culminating in artworks comprising of self-portraiture, sculptures, prints, drawings and installation art. These express layers of interpretation of the clash of international political entities alongside the cultural contestations and religious belief systems within the Muslim culture, and reflections upon my own identity as a Muslim man divided between the East and the West. Due to its conceptual yet allegorical content, this research is descriptive, and is intended to lay the ground for future research aimed at examining the compounded variables of potential cultural clashes, religious conflicts, and political action.
