Internet Tools for Machine DesignDhairyawan, Amit 10 January 2003 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to provide academic support to the oldest discipline of Mechanical Engineering, namely "Machine Design".
The rapid pace of technological development drives every individual, especially students. The industrial revolution in the first half of the 19th century contributed greatly to the advancement of Mechanical Engineering. The theories and experimental data from that time, some developed almost a hundred years ago are still in use in the original form while others have evolved to keep up with the times.
This thesis attempts to bring some of that classical machine design theory into a modern user-friendly form that is portable across the Internet.
Here the user will be presented with an interactive menu of topics of Machine Design where each is split sub-categorically as Theory and Application.
According to the choice made, short excerpts of theory are presented on the chosen matter. The theory will include but not be limited to the important relationships relevant to the design of the particular machine element.
After the review of the Theory, the user will be able to navigate to the application where the relationships from the theory will be awaiting user input in the form of solvers.
Since the primary emphasis of the thesis is about cultivating knowledge of the underlying theory, the applications will not be self-correcting or self-assuming.
The user will need to understand the relationships sufficiently well prior to using the applications to solve homework or design assignments.
The created Toolbox is available to all registered users through a login access. The user can then choose to review theory or directly access the applications of the described theory.
The thesis successfully demonstrates the use of the Internet as the media for education. / Master of Science

Kognitiva begränsningar i webbmiljö : En fältstudie av Information overloadRylander, Björn January 2016 (has links)

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 20-23, 2003 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Prototyping an Internet Protocol (IP) compliant architecture will demonstrate a realistic basis for satellite communication design. The prototype IP architecture should prove seamless and secure communications between the satellites and ground stations. Using commercial off the shelf (COTS) equipment, design and development of satellite communications becomes easier and less expensive than developing specialized equipment. IP space applications will improve communications while minimizing development costs.

An Examination of Internet Filtering and Safety Policy Trends and Issues in South Carolina's K-12 Public SchoolsVicks, Mary E. 01 January 2013 (has links)
School districts have implemented filtering and safety policies in response to legislative and social mandates to protect students from the proliferation of objectionable online content. Subject related literature suggests these policies are more restrictive than legal mandates require and are adversely affecting information access and instruction. There is limited understanding of how filtering and safety policies are affecting teaching and learning because no comprehensive studies have investigated the issues and trends surrounding filtering and safety policy implementation. In order to improve existing safety policies, policymakers need research-based data identifying end user access issues that limit technology integration in the kindergarten-12th grade (K-12) educational setting.
This study sought to examine Internet filtering and safety policy implementation issues in South Carolina's K-12 public schools to determine their influence on information access and instruction. A mixed methods research design, which includes both quantitative and qualitative approaches, was used to investigate the research problem. Quantitative data were collected from information technology (IT) administrators who were surveyed regarding filtering and safety policy implementation, and school library media specialists (SLMS) were surveyed concerning the issues they encounter while facilitating information access in a filtered environment. Qualitative data were collected through interviews with a subset of the SLMS population, thereby providing further insight about Internet access issues and their influence on teaching and learning. School districts' Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) were analyzed to determine how they addressed recent legislative mandates to educate minors about specific Web 2.0 safety issues.
The research results support the conclusions of previous anecdotal studies which show that K-12 Internet access policies are overly restrictive, resulting in inhibited access to online educational resources. The major implication of this study is that existing Internet access policies need to be fine-tuned in order to permit greater access to educational content. The study recommends Internet safety practices that will empower teachers and students to access the Internet's vast educational resources safely and securely while realizing the Internet's potential to enrich teaching and learning.

On state repression of journalists : a comparison of Egypt's treatment of print journalists and bloggers, 2004-2008Sternfeld, Rachel Anne 26 August 2010 (has links)
In 2008, the Committee for the Protection of Journalists reports, Internet journalists comprised the worldwide plurality of imprisoned media workers for the first time. Why are Internet journalists subject to higher levels of repression than journalists working other medium? My arguments build on literature concerning institutional mechanisms of control in authoritarian regimes, violent conflict and social movement repression. In this report I examine Egypt from 2004 through 2008, a period of high political activism and a corresponding rise in state repressive action. Five years of English-language wire service news reports indicate that a greater percentage of bloggers in Egypt were victims of state repression than print journalists over this period. This pattern can be explained in party by corporatism in the print media sector and journalists’ involvement with opposition movements. Finally, it appears that the state is using the judicial system as a mechanism of punishment; adding to the growing body of literature detailing the judicialization of politics in Egypt. / text
