ON SYMBOL TIMING RECOVERY IN ALL-DIGITAL RECEIVERS

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 27-30, 1997 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) currently achieves a bandwidth efficiency (h ) of 0.5 to 1.0 bps/Hz by using traditional modulation schemes, such as, BPSK and QFSK. SNL has an interest in increasing the present bandwidth efficiency by a factor of 4 or higher with the same allocated bandwidth (about 10 MHz). Simulations have shown that 32- QAM trellis-coded modulation (TCM) gives a good bit error rate (BER) performance, and meets the requirements as far as the bandwidth efficiency is concerned. Critical to achieving this is that the receiver be able to achieve timing synchronization. This paper examines a particular timing recovery algorithm for all-digital receivers. Timing synchronization in a digital receiver can be achieved in different ways. One way of achieving this is by interpolating the original sampled sequence to produce another sampled sequence synchronized to the symbol rate or a multiple of the symbol rate. An adaptive sampling conversion algorithm which performs this function was developed by Floyd Gardner in 1993. In the present work, his algorithm was applied to two different modulation schemes, BPSK and 4-ary PAM. The two schemes were simulated in the presence of AWGN and ISI along with Gardner’s algorithm for timing recovery, and a fractionally spaced equalizer (T/2 FSE) for equalization. Simulations show that the algorithm gives good BER performance for BPSK in all the situations, and at different sampling frequencies, but unfortunately poor performance for the 4-ary PAM scheme. This indicates that Gardner’s algorithm for sampling conversion is not suitable for multi-level signaling schemes.

A detailed analysis of the imperfections of pulsewidth modulated waveforms on the output stage of a class D audio amplifier

Thesis (PhD (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / Although the Class D topology offers several advantages, its use in audio amplification has previously been limited by the lack of competitiveness in fidelity compared to its linear counterparts. During the past decade, technological advances in semiconductor technology have awakened new interest since competitive levels of distortion could now be achieved. The output stage of such an amplifier is the primary limiting factor in its performance. In this dissertation, four non-ideal effects existing in this stage are identified and mathematically analysed. The analytical analysis makes use of a well-established mathematical model, based on the double Fourier series method, to model the imperfections introduced into a naturally sampled pulsewidth modulated waveform. The analysis is complemented by simulation using a strategy based on Newton’s numerical method. The theory is verified by a comparison between the analytical-, simulated- and experimental results.

The perceived timing of events across different sensory modalities : a psychophysical investigation of multisensory time perception in humans

The experiments reported within this thesis use psychophysical techniques to examine the factors which determine perceived multisensory timing in humans. Chapters 1 and 2 describe anatomical and psychophysical features of temporal processing, respectively, whilst Chapter 3 introduces the reader to psychophysical methods. Chapter 4 examines the relationship between two measures of sensory latency, reaction time (RT) and crossmodal temporal order judgment (TOJ). Despite task and attentional manipulations the two measures do not correlate, suggesting that they measure some fundamentally different aspect(s) of temporal perception. Chapter 5 examines the effects of adaptation to asynchronous stimulus pairs on perceived audiovisual (AV), audiotactile (AT) and visuotactile (VT) temporal order. Significant temporal shifts are recorded in all three conditions. Evidence is also presented showing that crossmodal TOJs are intransitive. Chapter 6 shows that concurrent adaptation to two sets of asynchronous AV stimulus pairs causes perceived AV temporal order to recalibrate at two locations simultaneously, and that AV asynchrony adaptation effects are significantly affected by observers' attention during adaptation. Finally, Chapter 7 shows that when observers are accustomed to a physical delay between motor actions and sensory events, an event presented at a reduced delay appears to precede the causative motor action. The data are well-described by a simple model based on a strong prior assumption of physical synchrony between motor actions and their sensory consequences.

Dans cette thèse je propose plusieurs mécanismes de plasticité synaptique qui pourraient expliquer la rapidité, la sélectivité et l'invariance des réponses neuronales dans le cortex visuel. Leur plausibilité biologique est discutée. J'expose également les résultats d'une expérience de psychophysique pertinente, qui montrent que la familiarité peut accélérer les traitements visuels. Au delà de ces résultats propres au système visuel, les travaux présentés ici créditent l'hypothèse de l'utilisation des dates de spikes pour encoder, décoder, et traiter l'information dans le cerveau – c'est la théorie dite du ‘codage temporel'. Dans un tel cadre, la Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity pourrait jouer un rôle clef, en détectant des patterns de spikes répétitifs et en permettant d'y répondre de plus en plus rapidement.

無 / This paper investigates the long term performance of Taiwan stock market from 1967 to 2008. We obtain the total return of Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Stock Index (“TAIEX”) by adjusting cash dividends. Prior to Dec 31st, 2008, the adjusted TAIEX (AdTAIEX) become 16,088.49 is 3.5 times than 4591.23, the TAIEX it reach. Based on annualized rate of return, AdTAIEX has 13.069% greater than 9.743% of TAIEX. Investors not only care about the rate of return of their portfolio, but the real purchasing power they have. Based on correction of inflation, AdTAIEX only has 8.25% annually, with 4.819% erosion by inflation. TAIEX only has 5.07% annually, with 4.673% erosion by inflation. Also, we create a timing strategy according to the varying of past variance that may help “buy and hold”strategy.

An investigation of the effects of SFAS No.121 on asset impairment reporting and stock returns

Prior to Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No.121 (SFAS No.121): Accounting for the Impairment of Long-Lived Assets and Long-Lived Assets to Be Disposed Of, managers had substantial discretion concerning the amount and timing of reporting writedowns of long-lived assets. Moreover, the frequency and dollar amount of asset writedown announcements that led to a large “surprise” caused the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to consider the need for a new standard to guide the recording of impairment of long-lived assets. This study has two primary objectives. First, it investigates the effects of SFAS No.121 on asset impairment reporting, examining whether SFAS No.121 reduces the magnitude and restricts the timing of reporting asset writedowns. Second, the study compares the information content (surprise element) of the asset impairment loss announcement as measured by cumulative abnormal returns (CAR) before and after the issuance of SFAS No.121. The findings provide support for the hypothesis that the FASB's new accounting standard does not affect the magnitude of asset writedown losses. The findings also provide support for the hypothesis that SFAS No. 121 does not affect the management choice of the timing for reporting asset writedowns. In addition, the findings suggest that the market evaluates the asset writedown losses after the issuance of SFAS No. 121 as good news for “big bath” firms, while, for “income smoothing” firms, the market does not respond to the announcements of asset writedown losses either before or after the issuance of SFAS No. 121. The findings also suggest that, for “big bath” firms, the market perceives the announcement of asset impairment losses after the adoption of SFAS No. 121 as more credible relative to that before its issuance. This could be because the practice of reporting asset writedowns after the issuance of SFAS No. 121 is under the FASB's authoritative guidance, which brings consistency and comparability in asset impairment reporting.

Effect of haptic guidance and error amplification robotic training interventions on the immediate improvement of timing among individuals that had a stroke / Effet de l’entrainement robotisé par réduction de l’erreur et augmentation de l’erreur sur le timing du mouvement chez la personne ayant eu un accident vasculaire cérébral

Abstract : Many individuals that had a stroke have motor impairments such as timing deficits that hinder their ability to complete daily activities like getting dressed. Robotic rehabilitation is an increasingly popular therapeutic avenue in order to improve motor recovery among this population. Yet, most studies have focused on improving the spatial aspect of movement (e.g. reaching), and not the temporal one (e.g. timing). Hence, the main aim of this study was to compare two types of robotic rehabilitation on the immediate improvement of timing accuracy: haptic guidance (HG), which consists of guiding the person to make the correct movement, and thus decreasing his or her movement errors, and error amplification (EA), which consists of increasing the person’s movement errors. The secondary objective consisted of exploring whether the side of the stroke lesion had an effect on timing accuracy following HG and EA training. Thirty-four persons that had a stroke (average age 67 ± 7 years) participated in a single training session of a timing-based task (simulated pinball-like task), where they had to activate a robot at the correct moment to successfully hit targets that were presented a random on a computer screen. Participants were randomly divided into two groups, receiving either HG or EA. During the same session, a baseline phase and a retention phase were given before and after each training, and these phases were compared in order to evaluate and compare the immediate impact of HG and EA on movement timing accuracy. The results showed that HG helped improve the immediate timing accuracy (p=0.03), but not EA (p=0.45). After comparing both trainings, HG was revealed to be superior to EA at improving timing (p=0.04). Furthermore, a significant correlation was found between the side of stroke lesion and the change in timing accuracy following EA (r[subscript pb]=0.7, p=0.001), but not HG (r[subscript pb]=0.18, p=0.24). In other words, a deterioration in timing accuracy was found for participants with a lesion in the left hemisphere that had trained with EA. On the other hand, for the participants having a right-sided stroke lesion, an improvement in timing accuracy was noted following EA. In sum, it seems that HG helps improve the immediate timing accuracy for individuals that had a stroke. Still, the side of the stroke lesion seems to play a part in the participants’ response to training. This remains to be further explored, in addition to the impact of providing more training sessions in order to assess any long-term benefits of HG or EA. / Résumé : À la suite d’un accident vasculaire cérébral (AVC), plusieurs atteintes, comme un déficit de timing, sont notées, et ce, même à la phase chronique d’un AVC, ce qui nuit à l’accomplissement de tâches quotidiennes comme se vêtir. L’entrainement robotisé est un entrainement qui est de plus en plus préconisé dans le but d’améliorer la récupération motrice à la suite d’un AVC. Par contre, la plupart des études ont étudié les effets de l’entrainement robotisé sur l’amélioration de l’aspect spatial du mouvement (ex : la direction du mouvement), et non l’aspect temporel (ex : timing). L’objectif principal de ce projet était donc d’évaluer et de comparer l’impact de deux entrainements robotisés sur l’amélioration immédiate du timing soit : la réduction de l’erreur (RE), qui consiste à guider la personne à faire le mouvement désiré, et l’augmentation de l’erreur (AE), qui nuit au mouvement de la personne. L’objectif secondaire consistait à explorer s’il y avait une relation entre le côté de la lésion cérébrale et le changement dans les erreurs de timing suivant l’entrainement par RE et AE. Trente-quatre personnes atteintes d’un AVC au stade chronique (âge moyen de 67 ± 7 années) ont participé à cette étude, où ils devaient jouer à un jeu simulé de machine à boules. Les participants devaient activer une main robotisée au bon moment pour atteindre des cibles présentées aléatoirement sur un écran d’ordinateur. Les participants recevaient soit RE ou AE. Une ligne de base et une phase de rétention étaient données avant et après chaque entrainement, et elles étaient utilisées pour évaluer et comparer l’effet immédiat de RE et AE sur le timing. Les résultats ont démontré que RE permet d’améliorer les erreurs de timing (p=0,03), mais pas AE (p=0,45). De plus, la comparaison entre les deux entrainements a démontré que RE était supérieur à AE pour améliorer le timing (p=0,04). Par ailleurs, une corrélation significative a été notée entre le côté de la lésion cérébrale et le changement des erreurs de timing suivant AE (r[indice inférieur pb]=0,70; p=0,001), mais pas RE (r[indice inférieur pb]=0,18; p=0,24). En d’autres mots, une détérioration de l’exécution de la tâche de timing a été notée pour les participants ayant leur lésion cérébrale à gauche. Par contre, ceux ayant leur lésion à droite ont bénéficié de l’entrainement par AE. Bref, l’entrainement par RE peut améliorer les erreurs de timing pour les survivants d’AVC au stade chronique. Toutefois, le côté de la lésion cérébrale semble jouer un rôle important dans la réponse à l’entrainement par AE. Ceci demeure à être exploré, ainsi que l’impact d’un entrainement par RE et AE de plus longue durée pour en déterminer leurs effets à long terme.

Temperature and the synchrony of plant-insect interactions

Increasing temperatures resulting from climate change have within recent years been shown to advance phenological events in a large number of species worldwide. Species can differ in their response to increasing temperatures, and understanding the mechanisms that determine the response is therefore of great importance in order to understand and predict how a warming climate can influence both individual species, but also their interactions with each other and the environment. Understanding the mechanisms behind responses to increasing temperatures are however largely unexplored. The selected study system consisting of host plant species of the Brassicaceae family and their herbivore Anthocharis cardamines, is assumed to be especially vulnerable to climatic variations. Through the use of this study system, the aim of this thesis is to study differences in the effect of temperature on development to start of flowering within host plant species from different latitudinal regions (study I), and among host plant species (study II). We also investigate whether different developmental phases leading up to flowering differ in sensitivity to temperature (study II), and if small-scale climatic variation in spring temperature influence flowering phenology and interactions with A. cardamines (study III). Finally, we investigate if differences in the timing of A. cardamines relative to its host plants influence host species use and the selection of host individuals differing in phenology within populations (study IV). Our results showed that thermal reaction norms differ among regions along a latitudinal gradient, with the host plant species showing a mixture of co-, counter- and mixed gradient patterns (study I). We also showed that observed differences in the host plant species order of flowering among regions and years might be caused by both differences in the distribution of warm days during development and differences in the sensitivity to temperature in different phases of development (study II). In addition, we showed that small-scale variations in temperature led to variation in flowering phenology among and within populations of C. pratensis, impacting the interactions with the butterfly herbivore A. cardamines. Another result was that the less the mean plant development stage of a given plant species in the field deviated from the stage preferred by the butterfly for oviposition, the more used was the species as a host by the butterfly (study IV). Finally, we showed that the later seasonal appearance of the butterflies relative to their host plants, the higher butterfly preference for host plant individuals with a later phenology, corresponding to a preference for host plants in earlier development stages (study IV). For our study system, this thesis suggest that climate change will lead to changes in the interactions between host plants and herbivore, but that differences in phenology among host plants combined with changes in host species use of the herbivore might buffer the herbivore against negative effects of climate change. Our work highlights the need to understand the mechanisms behind differences in the responses of developmental rates to temperature between interacting species, as well as the need to account for differences in temperature response for interacting organisms from different latitudinal origins and during different developmental phases in order to understand and predict the consequences of climate change. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Manuscript. An Alternative Variable Valve Timing System for Heavy Duty Vehicles

The ability to control engine valve timing has the potential to alter the engine performance over the entire operating range. The outcome of valve timing technology enables the possibility to increase efficiency, lowering emissions, increase engine torque, etc. One of the simplest ways to obtain a variable valve timing is to use cam phasers. The dynamics of a hydraulic cam phaser has been studied, three concepts with the purpose to control such an element has been developed using simulation driven product development. Focus have been on robustness, simplicity and implementation. A final concept using on/off solenoids to control a torque driven cam phaser has been designed and simulated in GT-SUITE which validated its performance and functionality. A dynamic model was built in Simulink which simulated the behaviour of the cam phaser and provided tools for optimizing the rotor design. By combining the knowledge of mechanical- and control engineering at Scania, the development process of such machine elements was effective. The outcome of this thesis has given a new perspective in understanding these components and their potentials.

"Can I trust you with my medicines?" : a grounded theory study of patients with Parkinson's disease perceptions of medicines management

Introduction: People with Parkinson's disease require individualised medication regimens to achieve symptomatic control whilst managing complications of the treatments and the underlying disease. Patients should continue to receive their individualised regimen when they are admitted to hospital but studies have highlighted that this may not happen. There is a paucity of research about patients' perceptions of the management of antiparkinsonian medicines during a hospital admission and the aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of Parkinson's disease patients admitted to Leeds Teaching Hospitals about the management of their antiparkinsonian medications.Method: Grounded theory methodology was used to allow detailed exploration of patients' perceptions and to generate theory about this under-researched area. Face to face, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 Parkinson's disease patients during their hospital admission, fully transcribed and analysed using the constant comparative approach. Results: Categories contributing to the core category of 'patient anxiety' were identified as 'maintaining usual medication routine', 'access to antiparkinsonian medications', 'accuracy and consistency', 'trust in healthcare professionals' and 'staff knowledge about Parkinson's disease'. Strategies used to manage the anxiety were related to the categories 'utilising expertise' in Parkinson's disease and 'patient involvement' in their care. Discussion: The theory suggests that some patients have negative perceptions about the management of their medicines during a hospital admission. Areas for practice development are presented along with areas for future research. Conclusion: This study provides new insight into the perceptions of patients with Parkinson's disease about the management of their medicines during a hospital admission.
