Within the folds : how biomedical science is redefining traditional concepts of parenthood and parenting (Researching 'Within the folds' : critical commentary)

Windridge, Lucy January 2015 (has links)
Within the Folds is a 70,000 word novel where prehistory and the near future meet together in a narrative examining the forces of evolution and duration. The work particularly focuses on the conceptual changes taking place in parenting models as biomedical science gives opportunities to reproductive paradigms which were previously impossible. Taking the premise that developments in human engineering are unstoppable, I explore the transgenic boundaries between 'natural evolution' and proactive human design, conceptually and thematically, as new models of gender roles within family life become inevitable.

Les figurations de la décadence dans la tétralogie de la gândara de Carlos de Oliveira / The figurations of decadence in the tetralogy of the gândara of Carlos de Oliveira

Ndour, Paul Ngor Mack 16 December 2013 (has links)
In the works of the tetralogy of gândara of Carlos de Oliveira, everything happens as if the author – thenarrative authority, or some other demiurgic intelligence – had opened since Casa na Duna, a terriblePandora’s Box from which escape evil incantations immediately dissolved in a blurred writing. The narrativecategories are buildings dedicated to degradation by the pernicious effects of temporality. Spells, writing of thetetralogy of gândara speaker calls the divinatrice mediation of the interpreter, only able to exorcise his evildesigns. Here is the poignant irony which is capable writing of Carlos de Oliveira, proclaimed forcefully andworn by playful artefacts: time, actants games, space games, life and death, in which the promise of a universaldecadence shines his omens. This work analyzes in a mode both semiotics, symbolic and allegorical, themechanism of the schemes of the decline. We resort Phillip Hamon these on the semiotic status of thecharacter, cratyl’s theories on onomastic, the phobia of the indiscipline movement of Durand and Malebrancheassumptions, and also Ricoeur reflections on the strategies of utopia.

The experiences of female sport administrators in the Western Cape: gender bias in the Workplace

Titus, Simone January 2008 (has links)
Magister Artium (Sport, Recreation and Exercise Science) - MA(SRES) / Research indicates that the advancement of women into top management positions is steadily increasing. However, it seems as if gender divisions in the workforce do not encourage equal opportunities for women in the labor sector. In the world of sport, gender equity has been promoted with some progress. However, this progress, both globally and in South Africa, is still limited both quantitatively and qualitatively. There has been very little research on the experiences of women in leadership positions, specifically in the field of sport. This study explored the experiences of female sports administrators in the workplace. This study employed a qualitative research methodology. Purposive sampling was used to select suitable candidates in the field of sport and recreation in the Western Cape, South Africa. Data was collected by using semi-structured interviews and data was analysed using thematic analysis. Results indicate that participants in this study experience gender bias in the workplace in terms of differential treatment, organizational fit and harassment and intimidation. Conclusions and recommendations are also offered. / South Africa

Whence Comes the Lady Percussionist? The Changing Role of Females in Professional Percussion Positions in the United States, 2011-2020

Calloway, Cassidy Cheyenne 01 May 2020 (has links)
Women percussionists have historically been the minority in professional percussion roles. After a discussion of women’s roles as drummers in ancient history, this document reviews the role of women percussionists in the rapidly evolving field of percussion. The purpose of this study was to see if there has been an increase in female percussionists in professional positions since Meghan Aube’s 2011 study, Women in Percussion: The Emergence of Women as Professional Percussionists in the United States, 1930-Present. Because female percussionists have been subject to gender stereotyping of instruments and gender discrimination, this study also aimed to discover if any progress has been made toward the presence of women in percussion education and as performers. In order to update results from Meghan Aube’s study, the personnel lists of the top two tiers of orchestras (the top 11.28 percent of 452 orchestras according to the ranking system established by the League of American Orchestras) were surveyed to find the gender ratio of their percussion sections. Likewise, data collected from the College Music Society directory was used to determine the number of women teaching percussion at universities in the United States. In addition, percussion professors from institutions offering graduate degrees in music were surveyed and asked to provide their experiences with gender discrimination toward female percussionists. This document may serve as a resource for further studies and research on the evolving roles of female percussionists.

Seeger, Ida, Gustafsson, Simon January 2021 (has links)
This study focuses on exploring barriers to intercultural communication among managers atIKEA Japan. It investigates what challenges MNC subsidiary managers experience whilecommunicating and interacting with people from different cultures. For this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the respondents were ofSwedish and Japanese nationality holding management positions at IKEA Japan. The research concluded that the respondents experienced the barriers differently, some feltstressed over uncertainty while others felt excited. A common theme across all the barriers waslanguage difficulties. Language differences were the most prominent stumbling block.Nonverbal communication was of greater importance to the respondent that does not speakJapanese well and is often used as a tool to aid verbal communication. The respondents did not see stereotyping and ethnocentrism as a clear hindrance to interculturalcommunication. However, from their responses, it is evident that there are some issues. TheJapanese tend to bunch all Westerners together and assume they are unable to speak Japaneseand understand Japanese customs. The Japanese have a strong sense of pride in their cultureand a strong preference for speaking Japanese. The Swedish managers may even lose therespect of Japanese co-workers if they do not speak Japanese perfectly.

Genus och stereotyper inom reklam : En kritisk diskursanalys av Gillettes reklamfilmer på YouTube / Gender and stereotypes in advertising : A critical discourse analysis of Gillette's commercials on YouTube

Lindberg, Emma January 2020 (has links)
Gender and stereotypes in advertising is a critical discourse analysis aimed at studying how femininity and masculinity is portrayed in Gillette and Gillette Venus marketing on YouTube. Both brands have, after the #metoo campaign, opted to approach their marketing from different point of view since their previous advertising has been heavily criticized for endorsing negative gender stereotypes. The theoretical framework consists of commodity feminism, the male gaze, stereotyping and hegemonic masculinity. The material studied were three commercials taken from each brand’s YouTube channel since the change in marketing direction. The videos were posted in 2018-2019. The results show that although both brands have made a change in how they portray femininity and masculinity there are still sizeable differences in how women and men are approached as target groups.

Hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck : Multidimensionell utsatthet och kulturell stereotypifiering

Nadr Ali, Mona, Salwan, Diwan January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to highlight discourses that appear in professionals’ descriptions of various aspects of honor-related violence and oppression. The study is based on seven qualitative semi-structured interviews with professionals who are in contact or have been in contact with the phenomenon within the social services. The theoretical and methodological approach has been based on a Foucauldian-inspired interpretation method and an intersectional perspective in order to gain a depth and a breadth in the analysis of the empirical data. We concluded among other things that honor-related violence and oppression can and should be understood without a perspective of we against them. The professionals explain the phenomenon as something that only exists within people with a different background than Swedish. Other cultures, religions and nationalities are opposed to Swedishness. Furthermore, the participants mention that the problem occurs everywhere around the world where no specific culture, religion or nationality is seen as the bearer of honor-related violence and oppression. By contrast, individuals from the Middle East who have Islam as faith are categorized more easily in honor related cases. This is based on prejudice and stereotypical notions of predetermined roles when it is the question of who the perpetrator and the oppressed is in the honor-related context. In addition, it may result in vulnerability in several dimensions. We propose research where vulnerable people can come to speak, get their voices, thoughts and feelings heard. Also, research that can make hidden groups visible for the social services in relation to honor-related violence and oppression, such as LGBTQ individuals.
