Sedimentary provenance and low-temperature thermochronology from northwestern Colombia: a record of the Neogene transition from Panama collision to Nazca subduction controlled tectonics / not available

A ocorrência de uma grande reorganização de placas durante o Neógeno reflete a comlpexa interação entre as placas do Caribe, Farallon, e América do Sul, e o arco intra-oceânico de Panamá. Isto, tem influenciado o registro tectono-estratigráfico dos Andes nor-ocidentais da Colômbia, o qual tem sido escassamente estudado perto da sutura entre os domínios de Panamá o da América do Sul. Novos dados de petrografia de arenitos, análises de minerais densos, geocronologia detrítica em zircão, geoquímica de rocha total, e modelamento termal inverso de múltiplos termocronômetros, realizados em um transepto de 50 km com direção SE-NW, permitem reconstruir a história de deformação e exumação/erosão das rochas do Cretáceo Superior ao Plioceno do flanco ocidental da Cordilheira Ocidental. O início da exumação das rochas do Cretáceo Superior associadas com a margem continental Sul-americana, ocorreu entre 45 e 20 Ma, o qual é sugerido pelo resfriamento inicial desde temperaturas dentro da zona de retenção parcial do hélio em zircão (~180-200°C). Essas rochas, também sofreram um pulso de exumação considerável durante o Mioceno Médio, o qual caracteriza-se por taxas moderadamente rápidas entre 0.3 km/my e 0.7 km/my. Adicionalmente, um período de resfriamento rápido também é documentado com taxas máximas de exumação ~1.3 km/my. As rochas do Eoceno Médio do arco oceânico de Panamá, as quais estão separadas das rochas do Cretáceo Superior da Cordilheira Ocidental por uma faixa de deformação, registram um resfriamento inicial em ~15 Ma desde a zona de retenção parcial de hélio em apatita (APRZ, ~80-60°C, com taxas perto de 0.6 km/my. Termocronologia detrítica em secuências pós-colisionais e sedimentos modernos, também registram estes períodos de exumação. Os novos resultados podem ser relacionados com processos tectônicos de escala regional, que incluem: Convergência rápida e frontal no Oligoceno Superior, entre a recentemente formada placa de Nazca e a placa continental Sul-americana, depois da fragmentação da antiga placa de Farallon, a colisão do Arco de Panamá do Cretáceo Superior-Eoceneo durante o Mioceno Médio, o qual resultou exumação geral ao longo do segmento NW da placa Sul-americana, é o início da subducção da placa de Nazca é a instalação de um segmento plano ao norte durante o Mioceno Superior-Plioceno. Este é provavelmente o mecanismo responsável pelo soerguimento da superfície recente na Colômbia nor-oriental e a contínua deformação-soerguimento das serras costeiras ocidentais e das bacias orientais de foreland ao norte de 5°N. / The occurrence of major plate reorganization during the Neogene, reflects the complex interactions between the Caribbean, Farallon and South-American plates, and the Panama Arc. These, have influenceed the tectono-stratigraphic record of the northwestern Colombian Andes, which has been scarcely studied neart the suture between the Panama and South-American domains. New sandstone petrography, heavy minerals analyses, U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology, whole-rock geochemical data, and thermal inverse modeling of multiple thermochronometers, carried along a 50 km southeast-northwest transect, allow to reconstruct the deformation and exhumation/erosional history of the Late Cretaceous to Pliocene rocks from the western flank of the Western Cordillera. The onset of exhumation of Late Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, associated with the South-American margin, occurred between 45-20 Ma, as suggested by the initial cooling from temperatures within the zircon helium partial retention zone (ZPRZ, ~180-200°C). These rocks also experienced a substantial pulse of exhumation during the Middle Miocene, which is characterized by moderately rapid rates between ~0.3 km/my and 0.7 km/my. Moreover, a Pliocene period of rapid cooling is also documented with maximum exhumation rates of ~1.3 km/my. The Middle Eocene rocks from the intra-oceanic Panama Arc, which are separated by a highly-deformed zone from the Late Cretaceous rocks of the Western Cordillera, record an initial cooling at ca. 15 Ma from the apatite partial retention zone (APRZ, ~80-60°C) at rates around 0.6 km/my. Detrital thermochronology of post-collisional sequences and modern river sediments also record these exhumation events. The we results can be related to more regional-scale tectonic processes including: the Late Oligocene rapid and frontal convergence between the newly formed Nazca plate and the continental South-American plate following the fragmentation of the former Farallon plate, the Middle Miocene collision of the Cretaceous-Eocene Panama Arc that triggered generalized exhumation-deformation widespread in the upper NW South-American plate, and the Middle to Late Miocene initiation of the Nazca subduction and installation of a Late Miocene-Pliocene flat-slab to the north. The latter is likely to represent the mechanism that triggered surface uplift in eastern Colombia and ongoing uplift-deformation of western coastal ranges and eastern foreland basins north of 5°N

Combinando a revisão do arquivo do conselho diretivo da Uniandes com a reconstrução das trajetórias e redes de contato dos seus membros, esboça-se aqui um mapa do campo do poder no período entre a fundação da universidade (1948) e a consolidação da Frente Nacional. Nesta tese é desenvolvida uma análise das elites colombianas e da utilização da educação superior como mecanismo de reorganização do campo político colombiano em um contexto de reivindicações sociais. / This research reviews the role of the Universidad de Los Andes (Uniandes, Bogotá, Colombia), in the making of the coalition regime known as the Frente Nacional (1958-1978). Combining a review of the directive boards archives and the analytical reconstruction of the trajectories and networks of its members, we draw a map of the field of power for the period between the founding of Uniandes (1948), and the consolidation of the Frente Nacional. In this thesis, we analyse the colombian elites and their use of higher education as a tool for the reorganization of the political field in a context of social claims.

Exploring the use of conceptual catchment models in assessing irrigation water availability for grape growing in the semi-arid Andes / Apport des modèles hydrologiques conceptuels à l’estimation de la disponibilité en eau pour l’irrigation de la vigne dans les Andes semi-arides

La thèse explore l’utilisation de modèles hydrologiques globaux pour estimer la disponibilité en eau agricole dans le contexte des Andes chiliennes semi-arides. Dans cette région, l’approvisionnement en eau des cultures irriguées de fonds de vallée durant l’été dépend de précipitations se produisant sous forme de neige à haute altitude lors de quelques évènements hivernaux. L’influence des phénomènes ENSO et PDO induit par ailleurs une forte variabilité climatique à l’échelle inter-annuelle, marquée par l’occurrence d’années extrêmement sèches ou humides. La région connaît aussi depuis les années 1980 une progression importante de la viticulture irriguée. Afin de prendre en compte les variations saisonnières et inter-annuelles de la disponibilité et de la consommation en eau d’irrigation, une chaîne de modélisation intégrée a été développée et différentes méthodes de quantification/réduction des incertitudes de simulation ont été mises en œuvre. Les écoulements naturels ont été simulés avec un modèle hydrologique global de type empirique/conceptuel prenant en compte les processus d’accumulation et d’ablation de la neige. En parallèle, les besoins en eau d’irrigation ont été estimés à l’échelle du bassin à partir de modèles phénologiques orientés processus et d’une approche simple du bilan hydrique du sol. Dans l’ensemble, une approche holistique et parcimonieuse a été privilégiée afin de maintenir un niveau d’abstraction mathématique et de représentation des processus équivalent à celui des modèles de bassin couramment utilisés. Afin d’améliorer l’utilité et la fiabilité des simulations obtenues en contexte de changement ou de forte variabilité climatique, l’effet des températures extrêmes sur le développement des cultures et l’impact des pertes en eau par sublimation à haute altitude ont fait l’objet d’une attention particulière. Ce cadre de modélisation conceptuel a été testé pour un bassin typique des Andes semi-arides (1512 km2, 820–5500 m a.s.l.) sur une période de 20 ans incluant une large gamme de conditions climatiques et des pratiques agricoles non-stationnaires (évolution des variétés de vigne, des surfaces et modes d’irrigation, etc). L’évaluation des modèles a été réalisée dans un cadre bayésien en faisant l’hypothèse d’erreurs auto-corrélées, hétéroscédastiques et non-gaussiennes. Différents critères et sources de données ont par ailleurs été mobilisés afin de vérifier l’efficacité et la cohérence interne de la chaîne de modélisation ainsi que la fiabilité statistique et la finesse des intervalles de confiance obtenus. De manière alternative, une caractérisation des erreurs de structure et de l’ambiguïté propre au choix du modèle hydrologique a été réalisée de manière non-probabiliste à partir d’une plate-forme de modélisation modulaire. Dans l’ensemble, la prise en compte explicite de la consommation en eau des cultures a mis en valeur certaines interactions entre paramètres hydrologiques et permis d’améliorer la fiabilité des simulations hydrologiques en année sèche. Finalement, une étude de sensibilité à différents seuils d’augmentation de la température et de la concentration en CO2 a été effectuée afin d’évaluer l’impact potentiel des changements climatiques sur le comportement de l’hydrosystème et la capacité à satisfaire la demande en eau d’irrigation dans le futur. / This thesis investigates the use of lumped catchment models to assess water availability for irrigation in the upland areas of northern-central Chile (30°S). Here, most of the annual water supply falls as snow in the high Cordillera during a few winter storms. Seasonal snowpacks serve as natural reservoirs, accumulating water during the winter and sustaining streams and aquifers during the summer, when irrigation demand in the cultivated valleys is at its peak. At the inter-annual timescale, the influence of ENSO and PDO phenomena result in the occurrence of extremely wet and dry years. Also, irrigated areas and grape growing have achieved a dramatic increase since the early 1980s. To evaluate the usefulness of explicitly accounting for changes in irrigation water-use in lumped catchment models, an integrated modeling framework was developed and different ways of quantifying/reducing model uncertainty were explored. Natural streamflow was simulated using an empirical hydrological model and a snowmelt routine. In parallel, seasonal and inter-annual variations in irrigation requirements were estimated using several process-based phenological models and a simple soil-water balance approach. Overall, this resulted in a low-dimensional, holistic approach based on the same level of mathematical abstraction and process representation as in most commonly-used catchment models. To improve model reliability and usefulness under varying or changing climate conditions, particular attention was paid to the effects of extreme temperatures on crop phenology and the contribution of sublimation losses to water balance at high elevations. This conceptual framework was tested in a typical semi-arid Andean catchment (1512 km2, 820–5500 m a.s.l.) over a 20–year simulation period encompassing a wide range of climate and water-use conditions (changes in grape varieties, irrigated areas, irrigation techniques). Model evaluation was performed from a Bayesian perspective assuming auto-correlated, heteroscedastic and non-gaussian residuals. Different criteria and data sources were used to verify model assumptions in terms of efficiency, internal consistency, statistical reliability and sharpness of the predictive uncertainty bands. Alternatively, a multiple-hypothesis and multi-criteria modeling framework was also developed to quantify the importance of model non-uniqueness and structural inadequacy from a non-probabilistic perspective. On the whole, incorporating the effects of irrigation water-use led to new interactions between the hydrological parameters of the modeling framework and improved reliability of streamflow predictions during low-flow periods. Finally, a sensitivity analysis to changes in climate conditions was conducted to evaluate the potential impacts of increasing temperatures and atmospheric CO2 on the hydrological behavior of the catchment and the capacity to meet future water demands.

This thesis explores the possible creation of a new categorization of American Literature as presented in the Andean novel El pez de oro: Retablos del Laykhakuy (1957) by Gamaliel Churata. In El pez de oro, Gamaliel Churata presents a strategy for the recuperation of native Andean cultural agency that enables the Andean subject to reclaim traces of their ancestral past under more verisimilar and verifiable terms. Churata argues that through a recuperation of native language and its infusion into the body of the major colonial language, Spanish, the Andean subject is equipped with a new culture producing tool that enables the recuperation of language, agency, history, and, ultimately, representation and inclusion within cultural and political institutional frameworks. By introducing his own function of bilingualism, vernacular language, and mythological infusions into the body of colonial letters, Gamaliel Churata is able to destabilize and disrupt colonial historical and textual authority to the point where the invented concept of America and the colonial product of American identity can be re-examined. Through this examination emerges a new option for the categorization of American identity as an aesthetic construct. Within this new categorization of aesthetic American identity, the Andean subject can begin his own process of self-identification through his native language toward the production of a future Andean American subject.

Engager une anthropologie de l’ivresse rituelle et collective dans un contexte festif – notamment funéraire - andin s’avère un champ de recherche fécond et fascinant tant la chicha, cette boisson épaisse de maïs fermenté, contient tout un monde de significations et l’ivresse, dont elle découle, favorise diverses formes de mise en relation avec le monde animé environnant et avec les morts. En ce sens, elle est performative puisqu’elle permet à ces entités d’exister et de devenir de sérieux interlocuteurs pour les humains. À partir d’une ethnographie dans la région andine de Cochabamba (Bolivie), dans la communauté paysanne quechua de Qhoari et dans le village également quechua d’Arani, l’ébriété et le boire collectif sont analysés comme une action qui consolide le lien social, renforce l’identité de groupe et rapproche du sacré. L’ivresse est alors recherchée, désirée et valorisée. En somme, elle est un moyen de communication qui permet d’établir des relations réciproques aussi bien entre les humains eux-mêmes qu’entre ces derniers et la Pachamama, tous les êtres qui peuplent la nature animée. C’est à travers la boisson alcoolisée que les hommes font entendre leurs requêtes auprès de ces entités surnaturelles car ce n’est qu’en état d’ébriété avancée que l’on peut dialoguer avec elles, qu’elles nous apparaissent en alter ego. En effet, l’humide est symbole de vie, le sec renvoie à la mort. Les offrandes de libations et les sacrifices sanglants favorisent la réhydratation et l’alimentation des entités diaboliques et des morts. Prolongeant cette réflexion, c’est à travers des mécanismes somme toute très proches de ceux à l’œuvre lors des offrandes que le corps du buveur, saccagé par l’alcool, presque moribond, prend tout son sens sacrificiel. / An Andean anthropological focus on ritual and collective intoxication within a festive setting – in particular in funeral contexts - leads to a prolific and fascinating field of research since chicha, the thick fermented corn beverage, contains a world of meaning. The drunkenness it engenders promotes diverse ways of creating links with not only the surrounding animated world but also with the dead. In that sense, it is performative because it makes exist these entities who become serious interlocutors for the humans. This ethnography conducted in the Andean region of Cochabamba (Bolivia), in the Quechua peasant communities of Qhoari and in the nearby village of Arani, analyzes inebriation as a collective action that consolidates social ties, strengthens group identity and even brings the sacred closer. Intoxication is therefore sought, desired and valued. In short, it is a means of communication that allows the establishment of reciprocal relations among humans and between them and the Pachamama (all beings that inhabit animated nature). It is through liquor that human requests can be heard by supernatural entities who can dialogue with them only when they are inebriated, appearing through an alter ego. In fact, wetness is the symbol of life; dryness refers to death. Offerings of libations and blood sacrifices promote the rehydration and nurturing of evil entities and the dead. It is through mechanisms very similar to those at work in such offerings that the body of the drinker, wrecked by alcohol, almost agonizing, acquires its sacrificial meaning.

Cenozoic evolution of a fragmented foreland basin, Altiplano plateau, southern Peru

Debate persists on the timing, magnitude and style of crustal shortening, uplift and basin evolution in the Andes. Many studies suggest that the central Andes, including the Altiplano plateau, were gradually uplifted as a result of protracted Cenozoic retroarc shortening. However, recent isotopic studies conclude that the Andes instead rose in pulses, with the most significant event occurring at 10-6 Ma. Many researchers attribute these rapid pulses of uplift to lower lithosphere delamination events. A better understanding of the history of Cenozoic crustal shortening is essential for determination of the mechanism(s) of Andean uplift. The well-exposed Cenozoic San Jerónimo Group was studied in the Ayaviri basin of the northern Altiplano in southern Peru. The 3-5 km-thick succession is situated at 3900-4800 m elevation, between the Western Cordillera magmatic arc and the Eastern Cordillera fold-thrust-belt. New detrital zircon U-Pb geochronological results from four sandstones and one reworked tuff in the San Jerónimo succession show large age populations indicative of syndepositional volcanism between approximately 38 and 27 Ma. A 1600-m-thick magnetostratigraphic section further constrains the depositional timing and accumulation rate of the upper portion of the succession. Sedimentological observations show a rapid transition from cross-stratified braided-fluvial sandstones to proximal channel-fill and alluvial-fan conglomerates at ~30 Ma. Paleocurrent measurements show important temporal and spatial variations in sediment dispersal patterns while conglomerate clast counts show an upsection transition from almost exclusively volcanic input to increasing contributions of clastic, quartzite, and limestone detritus. The corresponding shifts in depositional environment and sediment provenance are attributed to the activation of new thrust structures in close proximity to the basin, namely the Pucapuca-Sorapata fault system, indicating the presence of an eastward advancing fold-thrust belt dating to at least 38 Ma and reaching the Ayaviri basin within the northern Altiplano plateau at ~30 Ma. / text

Andean musicians in Vancouver : transcultural traditions and identity

Since the 1980s, "traditional" music of the Andes has become familiar to Vancouver audiences, as well as to those in urban centres throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Japan. This thesis explores the performance and presentation of Andean music in Vancouver, as an example of music making in transcultural displacement. Profiles of three musicians are presented, based on data compiled through formal interviews with musicians, observation of performance events, and research of promotional materials produced by Andean musical groups. All three are part of the Latin American immigrant "community" of Vancouver, and all have many years experience performing what they identify as Andean folkloric music. Their backgrounds, however, are diverse, as are the styles of music they currently perform. There are differences, also, in how their music relates to the construction and presentation of their ethnic identities in Canada. Central to this study is the issue of how musicians in a transcultural setting consider the notion of authenticity in maintaining musical traditions. The relation of a musical tradition to musicians' sense of identity, and how it may change over time, is also examined. This study demonstrates that in order to understand how and why a musical tradition changes through the process of globalization, we must examine the dynamics among musicians sharing that tradition, and the complex cultural and social networks in which each is embedded.

Late Pleistocene deglaciation histories in the central Mérida Andes (Venezuela) / Histoires de déglaciation pendant le Pléistocène Supérieur dans les Andes centrales de Mérida (Venezuela)

Les Andes de Mérida (Venezuela) est caractérisé par la présence de morphologie glaciaire bien préservée entre 2400-4978 m. Les études de ces morphologies glaciares font la contribution pour mieux comprendre et reconstruire la Dernière Glaciation aux Andes Vénézuéliennes. La reconstruction de la Dernière Glaciation (connue dans la région comme Glaciation Mérida) était limitée par la disponibilité de chronologie glaciaire. Cette thèse fait sa contribution à la reconstruction de la Dernière Glaciation et à la connaissance du paléoclimat depuis le Pléistocène Superieur. La méthodologie a involucré l´analyse géomorphologique et l´étude géochronologique. La morphologie glaciaire a été datée avec la technique de nucléides cosmogéniques produits in-situ (10Be). Cette technique est appropriée pour dater les matériels riches en quartz et la période d´intérêt. Les inférences des conditions paleoclimatiques ont été faites sur la base des analyses de la paléo ELA.Des différentes dynamiques glaciares ont été identifiées aux Andes centrales de Mérida. Dans les vallées de Mucubají et Mucuchache, la dynamique a été caractérisée par plusieurs étapes de avancé-arrêt des glaciaires dans un recul général de la glace. Dans les vallées de Gavidia et Mifafí, la disparition des glaciares a été très rapide avec la vitesse de recul plus haute (entre 4-7 km/ky). Divers caractéristiques morpho métriques comme la pente du fond de la vallée, la topographie de la zone d´accumulation (cirques glaciares avec les murs très incliné), des surfaces de la zone d´accumulation et son orientation ont aussi contrôlé les différents dynamiques glaciares.Les avancées des glaciares ont été identifiées entre 2500-4200 m. Les avancées glaciares pendant le MIS 3 ont été reconnues à Sierra Nevada. Ces avancées ont été liées aux hautes précipitations dans le nord de l´Amérique de Sud produites par l´activité de la Zone de Convergence Intertropical. Ces avancées ont été aussi reliées aux conditions plus chaudes et humides dans l´Hémisphère Nord (aussi ces conditions ont été identifiées aux Andes vénézuéliennes et sont connues comme l´Interstadío El Pedregal). Les avancées glaciares pendant le Dernière Maximum Glaciares ont été enregistrées en Sierra Nevada á Mucubají et Las Tapias entre 3100-3600 m. Principalement, les avancées glaciares MIS 2 sont arrivées pendant l´Oldest Dryas-El Caballo Estadío à 17 ka. Ces avancées glaciares ont été reliées aux températures froides dans l´Hémisphère Nord et les températures plus froides enregistrées dans les carottes de glaciares tropicaux.Mots clésDatation par cosmogéniques produits in-situ, morphologie glaciaire, Pléistocène, Dernière Glaciation, LGM, paléo ELA. / The central Mérida Andes (Venezuela) landscape is characterized by the presence of well-preserved glacial landforms located between 2400 and 4978 m a.s.l. Geomorphological studies of these glacial landforms significantly contribute to the Venezuelan Andes glaciations reconstructions. However, Last Glaciation (locally called Mérida Glaciation) was poorly reconstructed because of limited chronological data. This dissertation attempts to contribute to the Last Glaciation reconstruction and paleoclimate knowledge since the late Pleistocene. Accordance this necessity, the methodology involved geomorphological analysis and geochronological study. Glacial landforms were dated based on the Terrestrial Cosmogenic Nuclide dating (10Be). This method is suitable for date quartz-rich materials and for the period of interest. To deduce paleoclimate conditions an analysis based on paleo ELA was developed.In the central Mérida Andes different Late Pleistocene glacier dynamics were identified. In the Mucubají and the Mucuchache valleys, successive stages of glacier stop-advance were identified during an overall glacier withdrawal. In the Gavidia and Mifafí valleys, glacier withdrawal was rapid with the highest retreat rates (between 4-7 km/ky). Morphometric features as glaciers bottom valley slopes, accumulation zone topography (glaciers cirques with steep walls), areas and orientation controlled different glaciers dynamics.Glacier advances were evidenced between 2500-4200 m. MIS 3 glaciers advances has been recognized in the Sierra Nevada. These were related to the highest runoff in the north of South America produced by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the local warm and wet climate conditions (locally named El Pedregal Interstadial). LGM glacier advances were recorded in Sierra Nevada in the Mucubají and Las Tapias between 3100-3600 m. MIS 2 Glaciers advances mainly occurred during the Oldest Dryas- El Caballo Stadial at around 17 ka. Evolution géologique de l'avant-arc sud péruvien : apports des données géo-thermochronologiques / Geological evolution of the southern Peruvian forearc : insights from geo-thermochronology

La marge sud péruvienne est située au niveau d’une zone majeure de subduction océan continent depuis au moins le Paleozoique inférieur. C’est dans ce cadre que s’est formé l’un des plus importants orogènes du monde : les Andes Centrales. En effet, l’épaisseur crustale y est >60 km et ce sur une importante surface. Cependant, on considère actuellement que ce surrépaississement a été acquis incrémentalement seulement depuis ~30 Ma. Dans le but de comprendre comment et quand ce surrépaississement est apparu, la majeure partie des études précédentes s’est focalisée sur l’évolution de l’arc magmatique et sur l’histoire de la déformation, du soulèvement et de l’érosion de la zone d’arrière arc. Cependant, l’évolution tectonique et thermique de l’avant arc reste mal connue bien que cette zone soit susceptible de bien enregistrer les changements liés à la dynamique de subduction.Cette thèse à pour objectif de mieux contraindre l’évolution thermique et les couplages entre les processus magmatiques, tectoniques et sédimentaires depuis 200 Ma dans l’avant-arcactuel du sud du Pérou. De nouvelles données géo-thermochronologiques couplées à une nouvelle carte tecto-stratigraphique éclaircissent l’évolution de la marge péruvienne depuis le Jurassique. Trois périodes clefs sont analysées dans ce mémoire : le début de l’épaississement crustal, les déformations de l’avant-arc associées à la formation de l’Orocline bolivien et l’épaississement crustal de l’orogène des Andes Centrales pendant le Néogène.Nous montrons que l’épaississement crustal a probablement commencé entre 90 et 50Ma après plus de 200 Ma d’amincissement, et ce a la faveur d’une évolution en trois étapes :croissance initiale (90-74 Ma), « flare-up » (74-62 Ma) et effondrement extensionnel (62-50Ma). L’extension a ensuite prédominé dans l’avant-arc tout en diminuant progressivement jusqu’à ~30 Ma. Par ailleurs, nous mettons en évidence d’importantes zones de faillesnormales orientées perpendiculairement à la marge sud-péruvienne et qui délimitent de grands blocs basculés vers le nord-ouest. Ces déformations révèlent une extension parallèle à l’orogène dans l’avant arc pendant le Paléogène, probablement due à la formation de l’Orocline bolivien par rotation antihoraire de blocs rigides. Enfin, les traits géomorphiques visibles dans la zone cotiere du sud du Pérou permettent de définir deux périodes de soulèvement de la surface (entre 23 et 10 Ma et depuis ~4.5 Ma), séparées par une période de subsidence (entre ~10 et ~4.5 Ma). La même chronologie ayant été décrite sur le versant Amazonien de l’orogène, nous proposons que cette évolution soit due à des variations à grande échelle de l’épaisseur crustale ; le soulèvement de la surface étant provoqué par addition à la croûte de magma d’origine mantellique et la subsidence par un flux de matériel crustal ductile depuis les zones précédemment sur-épaissies. / The southern Peruvian margin has been located above a major ocean-continentsubduction zone since at least the Early Paleozoic, resulting in the formation of one of thelargest orogens in the world: the Central Andes, where crustal thickness is >60 km over a largearea. This overthickening is currently thought to have occurred incrementally only during thelast 30 Ma. To understand how and when crustal overthickening was acquired, most of theprevious studies have focused on the magmatic arc evolution and on deformation, uplift anderosion history of the backarc. The tectono-thermal Cenozoic evolution of the forearc remainspoorly known, whereas it is a zone prone to recording changes in subduction dynamics.The objective of this dissertation is to address the thermal evolution and the couplingbetween magmatic, tectonic and sedimentary processes over the past 200 Ma in the presentdayforearc of southern Peru where the crust thickens from ~30 km along the coastline tomore than 60 km under the present-day volcanic arc. New geo- and thermochronological datacoupled to a novel geological map illuminate the evolution of the south Peruvian margin sincethe Jurassic. Three key periods of the margin evolution are addressed in this dissertation: theonset of crustal thickening, the deformations associated in the forearc with the formation ofthe Bolivian Orocline and the Neogene crustal thickening of the Central Andean orogen.We show that crustal thickening likely began between 90 and ~50 Ma after more than200 My of lithospheric thinning during a three step evolution of the magmatic arc as follows:growth (90-74 Ma), flare-up (74-62 Ma), extensional collapse (62-50 Ma). Extension prevailedin the forearc since then and waned until ~30 Ma. In addition, we evidence important normalfault zones striking perpendicular to the southern Peruvian margin that delineate largenorthwestward tilted blocks. This deformation reveals orogen parallel extension in the forearcduring the Paleogene likely due to the formation of the Bolivian Orocline by counterclockwiserotation of rigid blocks. Finally, geomorphic features in the coastal area of southern Perureveal two periods of surface uplift (~23 to 10 Ma and since ~4.5 Ma), separated by a period ofsurface subsidence (from ~10 to ~4.5 Ma). The same chronology has been described on theAmazonian side of the Central Andean orogen. We thus propose that this evolution is due tolarge-scale crustal thickness variations; surface uplift being triggered by addition of mantlederivedmagmas to the crust and subsidence by ductile flow away from the previouslyoverthickened crust.
