[pt] A SEGREGAÇÃO SOCIOESPACIAL DE LOS ANGELES EM TRÊS MOMENTOS DISTINTOS REPRESENTADOS NO CINEMA / [en] THE SOCIOSPATIAL SEGREGATION OF LOS ANGELES IN THREE DIFFERENT MOMENTS REPRESENTED IN THE CINEMA

RAFAEL CORREIA NEVES 01 July 2020 (has links)
[en] This research approaches the relations between Geographic science and the images from the representation of the city of Los Angeles in three films: L.A. Conditional (1997); Crash (2004); and Blade Runner (1983). The conception that I will address here aims to analyzing the sociospatial segregation the city of Los Angeles represented in three distinct temporalities: Firstly I will analyze the Los Angeles of the post-World War II set in the 1950s by the movie - L.A. Conditional; the second analyzes corresponds to the contemporary city marked by the ideological confusion emerged in the post - 9/11 represented in Crash; Finally, in a city perspective imagined by science-fiction and set in future projections, I present Blade Runner setting Los Angeles in the year 2019. The three films chosen to cross the city of Los Angeles reading (s) were the subject of a remarkable gallery of interpretations (books, dissertations, theses and essays) in the field of humanities and philosophy. Such contributions have aroused the author s desire to participate in the debate. It is essential to point out that there is no exclusive way of looking at and interpreting whatever it is the representation nor conclude about what it expresses exactly. It is argued that visual representations are essentially more an interpretation than a recording, or a copy, of the object present in the concrete reality, one must question the way in which they, at various instants, shape and rework different interpretations of the same object. As set out above, far from displaying rules or fixed patterns of functioning of the real, representations are permeated by conventions, collectively accepted or questioning ideas, about realities that are in constant motion.

Latino Rhythms in Downtown Los Angeles: A Case Study of the Social, Physical, and Economic Environment of "LA Broadway"

Gonzalez, Ulises Antonio 01 June 2014 (has links) (PDF)
In an attempt to practice inclusive planning, this research project explores whether Broadway Avenue functions as an ethnic commercial strip and identifies social, physical, and economic components that contribute to the Latino neighborhood/ barrio. Using pilot studies Loukaitou-Sideris (2000), Loukaitou-Sideris (2002), Rojas (1993), Manzumdar et al. (2000), Main (2007), and Fernando (2007) as a foundation, this research uses a single case study in addition to several research methods: 42 random surveys, literature review and analysis, site observations/pictures, and land use survey. Various scholars write that barrios have unique physical, social, economic, and political attributes. A new aesthetic, art, symbols, type of businesses, music, community events, and vendors all add to social ambiance and physical design of the neighborhood (Rojas,1993). The findings reported in this case study highlight that the majority of the people who are present at any given time on Broadway Avenue are Latino immigrants from a lower socio-economic background. They visit Broadway’s Latino commercial strip from across Los Angeles County to shop, work, and for leisure purposes. Broadway Avenue is a festive, popular, spiritual, and political public space for many Latino immigrants. Many of the study participants are attracted to Broadway’s diversity, architecture, aesthetics, culturally themed stores and restaurants; showing that this Latino commercial strip possesses deep social, physical and economic significance. Contributions of this study include a detailed description about Broadway Avenue beyond the existing literature review. Survey results provide valuable information about what study participants would like to be preserved for Broadway’s future. This information provides user-driven recommendations for preservation and change on Broadway Avenue. Broadway Avenue between Second Street and Olympic Boulevard in downtown Los Angeles is the focused area of this thesis project to provide a qualitative description of the environment of a Latino commercial strip. This thesis provides recommendations to urban planners as they attempt to preserve cultural elements of Broadway’s Latino commercial strip.

DVD-ROM資料庫之敘事結構、觀點轉換分析:以迷城計劃「Bleeding Through Layers of Los Angeles:1920-1986」作品為例 / Structure and P.O.V in DVD-ROM database narratives:analyzing "Bleeding through layers of Los Angeles:1920-1986"

Fiction performs through text. Photography performs through images. Movie performs with video; with the help of montage, video has meanings. All of them are traditional narratives, and digital narrative contains all of the above. How does digital narrative work these out? This research aims to discuss “the database narratives”. As a type of digital narrative, how does database narrative completely dismantle the traditional narrative elements into a digital format? By analyzing the reference documents, we could find the relation between theories of the traditional narrative and digital narrative. Through the selected piece of work “Bleeding Through Layers of Los Angeles:1920-1986”, this research focuses on "narrative structure," and "point of view," trying to understand the way of storytelling in digital times. This research concludes with the following: 1. Open narrative structure renders a text more interpretations. 2. Inter-textuality enhances the scale of narrative to the most. 3. Interactive narrative enables readers more interactions with the text.

Hosting the Olympics: A Cost-Benefit Analysis of the Economic and Social Effects of the Olympic Games

Badia-Bellinger, Jordan Jose 01 January 2012 (has links)
This paper attempts to provide a cost-benefit analysis of the economic and social effects of hosting the Olympic Games. I provide an overview of the economic and social impacts of the Games and analyze their effects. I focus the economic effects of the Games on tourism, trade, corporate sponsorship and the sale of television rights. I also look at the social effects of the Games on infrastructure and employment. Finally I assess why the Olympics remain an appealing venture for cities, despite evidence that demonstrates how they produce more actual harm than good for the host city. In addition, I provide predictions for two alternative directions that the Olympics could take in the future: to either continue in the current trend of immense growth and commercialization, or alternatively, implement a new Olympic bidding process that establishes stricter criteria for candidate cities.
