Cosmology and הֶבֶל (hebel) in Qoheleth: Reinterpreting הֶבֶל through the lens of the opening and closing poems (Qoh 1:2-11 and 12:1-8)

Some, Augustin January 2020 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Richard J. Clifford / The translation of הֶבֶל (hebel) with vanitas has had a profound influence in the history of exegesis of the book of Qoheleth often characterized as the most pessimistic, skeptical, and nihilistic book in the Hebrew Bible, having as author a despondent man. This dissertation provides a corrective to the “vanity”, “meaningless”, “absurd” or negative reading of הֶבֶל in Qoheleth, by arguing that הֶבֶל has a positive value, as it expresses not the absurdity or the meaningless of life, but its fleetingness/transitoriness/brevity, whose meaning is disclosed in the opening and closing poems (1:2-11 and 12:1-8). This dissertation thus argues that the הֲבֵל הֲבָלִים הַכֹּל הָבֶל which introduces and concludes the book of Qoheleth (1:2; 12:8) is an appeal to contemplate the order, the beauty of the cosmos, through the regularity, recurrence, and cyclicality of natural phenomena. It also calls attention to the fleetingness of human experience in the world, which Qoheleth highlights in the opening and closing poems but also by the use of transient markers: יְמֵי־חַיֵּי הֶבְלוֹ ,(7:15) בִּימֵי הֶבְלִי ,(9:9), כָּל־יְמֵי חַיֵּי הֶבְלֶךָ ,(11:8) יְמֵי הַחֹשֶׁךְ (11:8) יְמֵי בְּחוּרוֹת (11:10) הַיַּלְדוּת וְהַשַּׁחֲרוּת הָבֶל (6:12), as well as אַחֲרָיו ,צֵּל and מִסְפַּר. The shortness of life and the limited duration of human achievements do not empty human life of its true meaning and value. Rather, they tell of the very nature of humans and their actions. The hebelness is from God who made things as fleeting, temporary, transient compared to his own eternity. By using the term הֶבֶל, and by introducing and concluding his book with “nature” poems, Qoheleth reminds the readers of their transience in this world with its pressing and tragic problems, as well as comforting them with the fact that evil itself is temporary in its impacts on life. They will pass away. Hence, Qoheleth’s opening and closing statement: הֲבֵל הֲבָלִים הַכֹּל הָבֶל (1:2; 12:8). / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2020. / Submitted to: Boston College. Syndrom vyhoření u učitelek mateřských škol / Burnout syndrome of kindergarten teachers

Jandová, Martina January 2012 (has links)
RESUME This diploma is dedicated to stress and burnout syndrom. Objective of this diploma is to find out what is the rate of mental strain concerning burnout syndrom and to map occurence of burnout syndrom for kindergarten teachers. We were interested how burnout syndrom is impacted by professional experience, number of children, place of work, team satisfaction and level of personal satisfaction according to age of teacher. It is focused to teacher's career and to specific stress categories. I have used Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire which is standardized for measurement of burnout syndrom and questionnaire dedicated to find out sensitivity against stress. I have used own questionnaire to find out demographic figures. Final result indicates most of teachers are resistant against stress. Burnout syndrom across all three areas was indicated only for one respondent from total number of 100 asked teachers. For 8 teachers burnout syndrom was confirmed in two areas.

Sacramental Magic and Animate Statues in Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare, and John Milton

January 2012 (has links)
"Sacramental Magic" explores the animate statue in early modem romance as an emblem of the potential spiritually transformative power of objects. The tendency of New Historicism to "empty out" theology from Catholicism overlooks the continued power of sacred objects in Reformation literature. My dissertation joins the recent turn to religion in early modern studies--Catholic doctrine and religious experience explain the startling presence of benevolent animate statues in Spenser, Shakespeare, and Milton; one would expect these statues to be empty idols, but instead they animate, revealing a real presence of the divine. I first investigate Spenser's Egyptian lexicon for the Catholic veneration of sacred images in the Temple of Isis in the Faerie Queene. Embedding Britomart's dream vision of an English empire in Egyptian mythology creates a translatio imperii from Egypt to Rome to England, transferring not only political but also religious power. The Isis statue's transformation of Britomart bears striking textual and visual correlations to John Dee's hermetic Monas Hieroglyphica. For Shakespeare, ermetic magic emblematizes the sacrament of penance. Shakespeare's claim "to make men glorious" suggests that Pericles transforms its audience by effecting, not merely signifying, grace. The play emblematizes the restorative aspects of reconciliation, the antidote to the seven deadly sins, with alchemical and medical imagery, culminating in Cerimon's reanimation of Thaisa through an Egyptian magic based on the hermetic ritual to ensoul statues. The Winter's Tale continues Shakespeare's meditation upon the emotional metamorphoses produced by reconciliation. I argue that Shakespeare creates an affective communion among the audience members and the characters, an effect similar to the workings of the Holy Spirit in a Mass, emblematized by the hermetic animation of Hermione. The final chapter examines the Catholic and hermetic parallels in Milton's "Il Penseroso" and Comus. In both works, Milton traces a shared system of correspondences underlying Catholicism and hermeticism in order to explore the relationship between objects and the immaterial, through angelology, Ficinian music theory, the contemplative lives of nuns, the Catholic sacrament of Extreme Unction, and ritual exorcism.

Lipidy - Tvorba animací pro podporu vzdělávání v přírodních vědách / Lipids - Creating Animations to Support Education in the Natural Sciences

Josífková, Hana January 2020 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the topic of lipids and it is focused on the processing in the form of educational materials (educational text and educational animations) for chemistry and biology on secondary school. It is devided into two parts. The theoretical part defines the key concepts serving as theoretical background: interdisciplinarity, visualization, animation. There is also performed the analysis of RVP G and the representation of the topic of the diploma thesis in this curricular document. The final chapter of the theoretical part is dedicated to determing the criteria for the analysis of the educational materials and the characteristics of the animation program Adobe Animate CC. The analysis of available educational materials is performed according to predetermined criteria in the practical part, specifically animations available on the Internet. There are also introduced the educational materials so as the complex file of educational animations created in the program Adobe Animate CC and the educational text that serves as a guiding material to educational animation program. The materials include methodological guide for users. The created materials focus on the topic of the lipids and biological membranes, they emphasize interdisciplinarity of chemistry and biology and also connect...

Prototype a solution for multi-track premium music score web player

Wu, Haotian January 2014 (has links)
The current commercial version of ScorX multi-track premium music score(MPMS) player has poor support on mobile device, extra cost could be required for current product to support mobile device. This project aims to focus on developing a MPMS player1 using web based cross-platform technology. The company's commercial version is build on Adobe Flash Player. An investigation is conducted and result shows that a possible solution exist that by using which building such a player could be done by using Web Audio API and Adobe Edge Animate; a prototype is built upon this solution. Study of this project shows that alternative solution for support mobile device could be native application for single mobile hardware platform and Haxe for multiple hardware platform including desktop and mobile device. After building a prototype, a series of tests are run to evaluate both Flash player solution and HTML5 solution. It turns out that Flash player will still be the rst choice for desktop device solution in current phase since it is more stable with a rather satisfactory performance, while HTML5 solution supports better in mobile device. The most of the disadvantage of HTML5 solution lies on the performance of the audio engine (i.e. Web Audio API) rather than the animation engine. As more and more major web browser has fully supportWeb Audio API, it will for sure make the audio engine perform even better. The future development of ScorX multi-track premium music score should therefore focus on HTML5 and native application if necessary.

A Constituição Orgânica em Aristóteles: a substância natural no seu mais elevado grau / Organic Constitution in Aristotle: a natural substance in its highest degree

Carvalho, Rodrigo Romão de 17 April 2017 (has links)
This research aims to develop a study on the aristotelian notion of organic constitution, which seek to propose an examination of the natural philosophy of Aristotle concerning the aspect, assigned to the body, to be natural substance in its highest degree, establishing an analysis comparative between elementary compounds, inanimate homoeomerous compounds and organic compounds. Therefore, I intend, first, to promote an analysis regarding the substantial nature of living organisms. Then delimit an investigation around the kinds of natural compositions, taking into account the way in which natural necessity would be involved in the constitutive process of such compositions. And finally, offer an interpretation relating to Chapter 12 of De Caelo IV, which relies on discerning the formal nature associated, on the one hand, the characteristic properties of homoeomerous bodies generally considered in themselves and for themselves, and, on the other hand, the characteristic properties of the organic constitution in order to clarify the differences between then. I think that, with this study, also will be possible understand in a clearly way the reason, in this conception of nature, it takes the living organism as the paradigm of natural substances (ousiai).
