High-Level Graphical User Interface to Streamline Mission Management of Dynamically Growing Data Transport Systems

The proliferation of open-architecture, modular approaches to data transport and multiplexing systems shows the need for a unified, high-level control scheme that helps to flatten the users' learning curve for increasingly sophisticated, expanding systems. Implementing a control package with the functionality described in this paper will improve the user experience by eliminating the need for low level hardware management, minimizing system network footprint and unifying this functionality for a diverse hardware package.

A Clinical Study Evaluating a Mandibular Repositioning Appliance to Treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The study evaluated the effects of a mandibular repositioning appliance (MRA) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The MRA was designed to hold the mandible anteriorly in an attempt to maintain a patent airway. Eleven subjects completed a full-night polysomnogram wherein their normal sleep was recorded half the night without the appliance (control) and the other half with the appliance (test). The sequencing of test and control halves was randomly assigned to avoid bias. After seven subjects were tested with the MRA, the MRA was modified for four additional patients by placing anterior vertical elastics (MRA*) to minimize the opening of the mandible. The skeletal and soft tissue changes with both appliances were analyzed using lateral cephalometric radiographs. The MRA was found to have no significant effect on the obstructive sleep apnea patients as a group. Individual response to the appliance varied from noticeably worse to marked improvement. Subject #2A exhibited the reduction of a moderate-to-severe apnea (Apnea-hypopnea index 55.92) to a clinically acceptable level (Apnea-hypopnea index 9.57) with appliance wear. The treatment was considered successful. Significant cephalometric changes with appliance wear were increased lower facial height, a superiorly positioned hyoid bone relative to the mandibular plane, and a decreased posterior airway space. No cephalometric measurement could accurately predict the outcome of the treatment, and posterior airway space, commonly measured in sleep research, was not reliable. The mandibular repositioning appliance was effective in treating a small percentage of individuals with obstructive sleep apnea. A polysomnogram was needed to quantitatively measure the effectiveness of treatment. Under no circumstance should a subjective evaluation by the patient or the clinician be used to assess treatment results. Further investigation is required to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of this treatment. Periodic follow-up sleep studies are required for any patient treated with this appliance until more long term studies are completed.

Appliance Architecture in the Invisible College: a Pedagogical Text

This thesis presents a pedagogical framework for understanding dynamic Parametricism within the new media culture. As indicated by the title, 'Appliance Architecture in the Invisible College: a Pedagogical Text', this paper will serve two purposes. First, appliance architecture will construct the theoretical framework that will provide the context for the four case studies presented within this thesis: an interview with Rob Ley, designer of the Reef Project; the design and development of the Eclipsis Screen for the Solar Decathlon house, Lumenhaus; the development of an architectural robotics design laboratory, Prototyping in Architectural Robotics for Technology-enriched Education (PARTeE); and workshop > no.1, a physical computing workshop held at the College of Architecture + Urban Studies (CAUS). Second, the invisible college will serve as a pedagogical framework for teaching dynamic Parametricism within appliance architecture. The invisible college will explore the emergent design typologies developed through the PARTeE laboratory's first year and will culminate in the application of the teaching methodologies used for the physical computing workshop. The following serves to establish the architectural discourse within which 'Appliance Architecture in the Invisible College' is embedded. In the broadest sense, this discourse is that of kinetic architecture. The word 'kinetic' is used to denote motion, or the act or process of changing position of over time, where time is the unit of measurement or relativity. The 'appliance' is defined as any consumer object or assembly with embedded intelligence; it does not shy away from the modern connotation of objects such as a coffee maker, refrigerator or iPod. The appliance as an assembly, therefore, presents a part-to-whole relationship that is understood through GWF Hegel's organic unity, which states: 'everything that exists stands in correlation, and this correlation is the veritable nature of every existence. The existent thing in this way has no being in its own, but only in something else, just as the whole would not be what it is but for the existence of its parts, so the parts would not be what they are but for the existence of the whole' (Leddy, 1991). It is this part-to-whole relationship which provides an understanding of the emergent typologies which structure the foundation for learning within the invisible college. / Master of Architecture

A Study on Small Appliance Manufacturers¡¦ Management Strategy ¡V Case of Taiwan-Based Manufacturer, Airmate Electrical (Shenzhen) Co.,Ltd., in China

Along with more and more intense competition of OEM as well as ODM low margin strategy, Taiwanese' small appliance manufacturers have inevitably encountered the sharp profit decline and could no longer benefit from the original good earnings that derive from Vertical Integration Strategy commonly applied. In order to sustain the competitiveness and pursue higher returns, it's indispensable for those Taiwanese small appliance manufacturers to further consider moving towards value chains that generate better added-value such as R&D and marketing; R&D here includes innovation, patent and marketing consists of brand as well as channel. By fully adopting Vertical Integration Strategy in the preliminary, Airmate has fruitfully grown to a well profit-earning company and then moved towards design innovation as well as brand that were extremely stressed in Smile Curve Theory. Once again, Airmate has succeeded in the branding and considerably benefited from its brand equity. Based on China market's small appliance background, trend and affiliated with a liner regression analysis on home appliance manufacturers as well as channels, a research was conducted through in-depth interview and secondary data gathering to discuss how Airmate should further utilize channel to manifest its brand equity so that it could accordingly generate more profits as well as stabilize its cash flow. In summary, this very study has revealed and concluded a number of suggestions as followings. 1.New Product Development Strategy Owing to the inferiority of its product mix, Airmate has to further develop new product with eminent complexity and more varieties so that it could enhance its core competence as well as keep the new competitors from involving in the original competition. 2. Branding Strategy Airmate is highly suggested to keep investing in the branding as a way to better strengthen Airmate's high-end brand image. At the same time, a new branding project should be planned in order to extend Airmate's brand recognition to those secondary and thirdly cities as well as farmers market. It's not advised to additionally rebuild the middle or low end brands for thirdly cities or farmers market as it will muddle its brand positioning and diminish its high-end brand image. In light of brand theory, a product with higher added-value could correspondingly secure higher market price and generate better profit. Thus, since Airmate has been doing OEM as well as ODM for those celebrated appliance companies worldwide, it's extremely recommended that Airmate should appeal to media such as newspaper or magazine to publish articles to associate its brand with those high-end appliance companies. 3.The Channel Selection Strategy It's highly advised that Airmate should concentrate on primary and focused channels such as Home Appliance Chain Stores and Supermarket. A review and scheme should be conducted as a way to raise its brand exposure and at the same time increase the sales amount. 4.The Selection of Domestic or Foreign Channels Strategy With the advantages of advanced channel operations as well as management know-how and its large scale new stores opening plan, foreign channels have obviously surpassed the performance of channel efficiency and benefit than that of domestic channels. It's highly recommended that Airmate should actively build further close cooperation with foreign channels. 5.Channel Relationship Management A review on various channels and consumers' behaviors is suggested in order to better position the price and product separately to match up each channel. 6.The Measure to Cope With the Competition Resulted from WTO Innovation and setting up new appliance standard are key to sustain the core competence, Airmate is thus advised to focus on these two aspects.

Die Therapie schlafbezogener Atmungsstörungen mit Hilfe eines den Unterkiefer protrudierenden Schienensystems

50 Patienten wurden mit einem herausnehmbaren unterkiefervorverlagernden Schienensystem im Zeitraum der Jahre 2000 bis 2002 behandelt. Die schlafmedizinisch-diagnostischen Untersuchungen vor Therapiebeginn erfolgten bei 25 Patienten ambulant und bei den anderen 25 Patienten stationär. Es wurden schlafmedizinischen Parameter zur Diagnosestellung herangezogen. Hälftig bestanden bei diesen Patienten die schlafmedizinische Diagnosen einer Rhonchopathie (reine Schnarcher, ohne internistische Besonderheiten) und einer leicht bis mittelgradigen obstruktiven Schlafapnoe. Bei 23 Patienten mit einer Rhonchopathie wurde das Funktionsprinzip der Unterkiefervorverlagerung durch den Wilcoxon-Test bei der Veränderung der schlafmedizinischen Parameter Entsättigungsindex, Schnarchindex, Anzahl der Entsättigungen und niederste Entsättigung bestätigt. Bei zwei (8%) der 25 Patienten veränderten sich die Parameter nicht positiv, so dass die Schienentherapie abgebrochen wurde. Bei 20 Patienten mit leicht- bis mittelgradiger Schlafapnoe bestätigte der Wilcoxon-Test die Signifikanz der Veränderungen bei den polysomnographischen Werten AHI , REM und Schlafeffizienz. Die Signifkanzschranke wurde bei dem somnologischem Wert Tiefschlaf nicht erreicht. Obgleich bei 13 Patienten die Schienentherapie aus unterschiedlichen Gründen innerhalb der zwei Untersuchungsjahre abgebrochen werden musste, wurde die Behandlung bei den 37 verbliebenen Patienten (74%) als erfolgreich und zufriedenstellend eingeschätzt.

Compliance-free Class II correction and its relationship to vertical facial characteristics

Background: While efficacy of the Forsus appliance has been shown, there are disagreements on its mechanism for Class II correction. Class II studies have been criticized for ignoring potential differences in results based on differing vertical facial phenotypes. The purpose of this study was to better understand the effects of Class II correction using the Forsus appliance and relate changes during and at the completion of treatment to initial MP-SN angles. Materials and Methods: Records of 59 patients obtained at 4 different time points were examined retrospectively. ANOVA was used to describe the cephalometric changes and Pearson’s correlation tested for any relationship between patients’ pretreatment MP-SN angle and other selected measures. Results/Conclusions: Class II correction was achieved by mesial movement of the mandibular dentition, differential mandibular growth, and clockwise rotation of the occlusal plane. There was no correlation between pre-treatment MP-SN angles and any selected cephalometric measure.

The purpose of this study was to improve understanding of those force systems by evaluating differences between the resultants of two-dimensional and three-dimensional orthodontic appliance activations. An in-vitro model was constructed and three force-moment gauges were used to measure the forces and moments produced. Comparisons were made between two-dimensional and three-dimensional v-bend activations. Measurements were made with both edgewise and ribbonwise wire orientations. Locations of v-bends resulting in zero moment at the incisor were found to be closer to the molar than the anticipated 1/3 of the distance from molar to incisor, for both two-dimensional and three-dimensional wires. For two-dimensional wires, this v-bend location was found to be approximately ¼, while for three-dimensional wires it was even closer to the molar. Ribbonwise wires, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional, produced forces and moments of greater magnitude than their edgewise counterparts. Further research is required to explain the differences between anticipated and actual results, and to develop more accurate means of modeling orthodontic force systems.

Estudo comparativo cefalométrico dos efeitos dentoesqueléticos decorrentes do tratamento com dois tipos de aparelhos de Herbst e um grupo controle, em adolescentes com retrognatismo mandibular / Comparative evaluation of cephalometric dentoskeletal effects resulting from treatment with two types of Herbst appliances and a control group, in adolescents with mandibular retrognathism

Neste estudo retrospectivo, controlado, de 94 adolescentes consecutivos com maloclusão de Classe II, divisão 1ª de Angle e retrognatismo mandibular, no surto de crescimento puberal, foram avaliadas as mudanças dentoesqueléticas decorrentes do tratamento com aparelho de Herbst (Grupo A coroas de aço e B splints acrílicos) e de acompanhamento (Grupo C - controle), em um período de 12 meses. As telerradiografias laterais foram obtidas em T1 (inicial) e T2 (no final do período de observação). As variáveis cefalométricas foram analisadas com testes paramétricos. Os resultados mostraram que os dois grupos tratados caracterizaram-se diferencialmente do grupo controle, com restrição do crescimento maxilar e maior crescimento mandibular, o que permitiu melhorar a relação sagital. Da mesma forma, no aspecto dentoalveolar houve melhora da sobressaliência pela retroinclinação dos incisivos superiores e vestibularização dos incisivos inferiores, distalização com controle vertical dos molares superiores e mesialização dos molares inferiores. Os três grupos mostraram semelhança na extrusão dos molares inferiores, na preservação da morfologia mandibular e do padrão facial. O plano oclusal rotacionou no sentido horário nos grupos tratados e anti-horário no grupo controle. Pode-se concluir que no tratamento com dois tipos de aparelho de Herbst da maloclusão de classe II, em adolescentes no pico máximo de crescimento, observaram-se um conjunto de mudanças que melhoraram as relações dentoesqueléticas sagitais, independentemente do crescimento. No aspecto vertical, apesar das pequenas mudanças observadas houve preservação do padrão facial assim como no grupo controle. / This retrospective controlled study enrolled 94 consecutive adolescents during growth spurt with Angle class II division 1 malocclusion and mandibular retrognathism and evaluated skeletal and dental changes resulting from treatment with a Herbst appliance (Group A: steel crowns; Group B: acrylic splints) and compared them with results of a follow-up group (Group C: control) for 12 months. Lateral radiographs were obtained in the beginning of the treatment (T1) and at the end of the observation period (T2). Cephalometric variables were analyzed using parametric tests. The results of the two treatment groups were different from those found for the control group. Maxillary growth was restricted, whereas mandibular growth was greater, which resulted in a better sagittal relation. At the same time, the analysis of dentoalveolar aspects revealed that overjet was reduced due to distal tipping of maxillary incisors and buccal inclination of mandibular incisors, vertical control of maxillary molars and mesial movement of mandibular molars. The three groups had similar extrusion of mandibular molars, preservation of mandibular morphology and facial pattern. The occlusal plane rotated clockwise in the treated groups and counterclockwise in the control group. It can be concluded that the treatment of class II malocclusion in adolescents during growth spurt with two types of Herbst appliance resulted in a set of changes that improved sagittal skeletal and dental relations, regardless of growth. Vertically, facial pattern was preserved in treatment and control groups, despite some small differences.

Since the company A corp. which was formly a software company in Netword Attached Storage field merged a communication appliance business unit from a industrial PC manufactoror, it was expected to leverage the resources of both joint venture parties to create synergy in competing with the existing competitors. It is two years after funding the management is about to review the product lines ¡V hardware manufacture and storage system, to make the go/no go decision on the storage system product line. Regarding to the business factor, the case is described in terms of value propostion, value network, and resource and process of the company; For the business competition, competitors in both product lines are stated; And respective operation records are provided in making the decision.
