The Arthurian adultery in English literature, with special emphasis on Malory, Tennyson, E.A. Robinson, and T.H. White

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the history in English literature of the relationship between King Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot, in order to show how various authors have enriched the legend by developing the psychological potential of the chief characters, and by projecting the standards of their respective ages into their versions of the story. Special emphasis has been placed on the work of Sir Thomas Malory, Alfred Tennyson, E.A. Robinson, and T.H. White. The Arthurian legend is particularly appropriate for such a comparative study. It has received the attention of English writers for eight centuries, and, for the past hundred years, of writers in America as well. In the fifteenth century Malory used the legend to argue for a strong monarchy, and to remind his aristocratic countrymen of the neglected ideals of chivalry; in the nineteenth century Tennyson hoped that the re-telling of the story for its elements of moral and spiritual allegory would inspire the Victorians to rise above the materialism and sensuality which to him were signs of the times; early in the twentieth century Edwin Arlington Robinson suggested a comparison between the disintegration of Camelot and the disruption of European society after World War I, and he questioned the traditionally accepted greatness of Arthur and his kingdom; in the last decade Terence Hanbury White has seen that the problem facing King Arthur also confronts the strife-torn twentieth century how can the energies of men be harnessed for constructive rather than destructive action? Soit X1 une courbe projective lisse et géométriquement connexe sur un corps fini Fq avec q = pn éléments où p est un nombre premier. Soit X le changement de base de X1 à une clôture algébrique de Fq. Nous donnons une formule pour le nombre des systèmes locaux ℓ-adiques (ℓ ≠ p) irréductibles de rang donné sur X fixé par l’endomorphisme de Frobenius. Nous montrons que ce nombre est semblable à une formule de point fixe de Lefschetz pour une variété sur Fq, ce qui généralise un résultat de Drinfeld en rang 2 et prouve une conjecture de Deligne. Pour ce faire, nous passerons du côté automorphe, utiliserons la formule des traces d’Arthur non-invariante, et relierons le nombre cherché avec le nombre Fq-points de l’espace des modules des fibrés de Higgs stables. / Let X1 be a projective, smooth and geometrically connected curve over Fq with q = pn elements where p is a prime number, and let X be its base change to an algebraic closure of Fq.We give a formula for the number of irreducible ℓ-adic local systems (ℓ ≠ p) with a fixed rank over X fixed by the Frobenius endomorphism.We prove that this number behaves like a Lefschetz fixed point formula for a variety over Fq, which generalises a result of Drinfeld in rank 2 and proves a conjecture of Deligne. To do this, we pass to the automorphic side by Langlands correspondence, then use Arthur’s non-invariant trace formula and link this number to the number of Fq-points of the moduli space of stable Higgs bundles.

GIVE HER SOME SPACE: QUEST MAIDENS, SPATIALITY, AND MOBILITY IN MEDIEVAL ARTHURIAN LITERATURE

<p>  </p> <p>My dissertation proves that movement for both women and men is tantamount to power. The choice for a quest maiden (that is, a woman who takes part in a quest) to move between places and spaces is a choice for them to be able to change both their social and spatial positionalities. Focusing on high- and late medieval English chronicles and romance, I divide medieval Arthurian quest maidens into one of four categories based upon their movement: the static “in” and “out” groups that either remain inside a court or outside in the forest, and the mobile “inwards” and “outwards” groups that either enter into a court from outside it or who leave a court for the outside world. This diversity of categories is a novel contribution to spatial studies within Arthurian literature, as quest maidens are found everywhere across the Arthurian landscape. Such women dwell in the most intimate castle chambers as well as within the most remote forest copse. These placements are significant, as I argue that spaces are defined by the people who exist within them. As communal space is shaped and created by the multiple identities that inhabit that space, the ability to exist and shape that space becomes itself a demonstration of power. This power is expressed both by individuals, such as a knight in the woods or a queen in her castle, and by collectives, such as the Knights of the Round Table. A space gains its reputation by the deeds of its inhabitants, and those inhabitants either benefit or suffer by their space(s)’s reputation. This extends to the movement that occurs between such spaces. A maiden who enters Camelot to ask for help changes the identity of the court: it becomes a place that succors maidens. A maiden who conversely stops a knight in the Forest of Adventure helps shape that forest into a space for quests. As the Arthurian world is founded upon the questing process that these quest maidens both support and enable, their very existence shapes the form of the world. The space of the quest cannot be unlinked from the maidens who occupy and enable it.</p>
