Weight versus voice : how foreign subsidiaries gain attention from corporate headquarters in emerging markets

De Carcenac, Genevieve 09 June 2011 (has links)
The research problem of this project is to investigate if, and how, Birkinshaw and Bouquet‟s model of subsidiary attention seeking by means of weight and voice needs to be modified for MNC subsidiaries operating in emerging markets. The qualitative research technique used for this research was the multiple-case study method. Key findings are that weight is moderated by institutional environments and voice by national culture in emerging markets. Recommendations are made to assist managers of subsidiaries in increasing weight and voice in emerging markets in order to gain more attention from Corporate Headquarters. Can Longitudinal Observations of Infant Joint Attention Inform Infant Interventions in Autism Spectrum Disorders?

Suchomel, Nicole G. 05 1900 (has links)
Infants 5-34 weeks of age were observed in their homes playing with their mothers as part of a longitudinal study. Two mother-infant dyads were observed once per week for twelve weeks, during a ten-minute play session. The purpose of the observation system is to describe contingencies leading to the development of attention-seeking behaviors in typically developing infants. Observations were coded using a type-based format (person engagement, object engagement, supported joint engagement, coordinated joint engagement, and unengaged). Child eye gaze, reaching, and grabbing were coded as well as all child and adult vocalizations. It is suggested that the data from the observation system will help inform and assess the effectiveness of infant and toddler social interventions in autism spectrum disorders and advance our understanding of attention seeking behaviors.

People with hearing disabilities have techniques that allow the understanding of words and even talk through sign language, also known as Pounds . The act or gesture to capture the attention of the Hearing Impaired , DA, to initiate communication is currently a barrier in the process , it is necessary to have a direct visual communication and even closeness and physical contact to capture the attention of the hearing impaired . The concept of Assistive Technology,, has a fundamental role in life and socialization of people with a disability , and this work was the proposal to create a device that uses this concept . This work was designed and developed , independent of the speaker and isolated words a system that uses the technology of speech recognition on a mobile device , which is capable of generating a vibration alert for the hearing impaired , when one of the words previously recorded in system dictionary , is spoken by a third person and identified . It was concluded from the tests that it is possible to get the attention of a deaf, acting as a facilitator from a hearing person or other external event / Mestrado / Tecnologia e Inovação / Mestre em Tecnologia

#storyofmylife: Personality Characteristics Associated With Attention Seeking Behavior Online and Social Media Use in Emerging Adulthood

Berryman, Chloe 01 January 2014 (has links)
The intent of this study was to explore to what extent loneliness, need for belonging, and parent-child relationships relate to time spent communicating via social media. The study also focused on predicting social media integration and vaguebooking, an attention seeking behavior on social media. Results from a sample of 471 college students indicated that need for belonging was related to more time spent communicating with friends online. Parent-child relationship, social anxiety, and loneliness were not significantly correlated with social media use. Need for belonging predicted social media integration and loneliness predicted vaguebooking. Histrionic symptoms significantly predicted both social media integration and vaguebooking behaviors, indicating that for those with histrionic traits, social media may reinforce attention seeking behaviors.

The Effects of Providing a Brief Training Package to Daycare Teachers to Teach a Child a Sign for Social Attention

Zimmerman, Valerie L. V. 08 1900 (has links)
Behavioral skills training (BST) packages have been successful in increasing change agents’ correct implementation of various procedures. The current study evaluated the effects of a brief BST package to train daycare teachers to implement incidental teaching procedures with toddlers. The brief BST consisted of a set of written instructions, a two-minute video model, rehearsal, and feedback during session. Results demonstrated that teachers increased their correct implementation of incidental teaching procedures following training. In addition, two of the three toddlers increased the frequency of signs to request attention.

Sociala mediers effekt på ungdomar och unga vuxnas psykiska hälsa : En litteraturstudie / The effect of sociala media on the mental health of adolescents and young adults : A literature study

Annerfalk, Alice, Svensson, Ida January 2019 (has links)
Introduction: In recent years, the use of social media has increased significantly in young people. 92 percent of all 13 to 16-year-olds today use social media where the most common media are Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. Something else that increases at the same rate as social media is mental illness in young people. Aim: The purpose of this literature study is to investigate whether adolescents and young adults (age 13-24) use of social media has any effects on their mental health and well-being. Method: The method is a literature study in which 21 peer reviewed articles have been analyzed to answer the questions. Result: Social media proved to have both a negative and a positive effect on young people. Psychological consequences could be demonstrated and explained by how social media are used, how often they are used and different mediating variables. The strongest mediation was shown to be FoMO, the fear of missing something out if not constantly checking through their social media. Social media was also shown to be a health-promoting tool if used in moderation, as the individual then develops his or her communication skills and strengthens the social interaction and support. Conclusion: Social media have both positive and negative effects on mental health. However, the conclusion in this literature study is that the negative effects outdo the positive effects, and social media should therefore be used with more caution and reflection.

Fredriksson, Jeanette January 2018 (has links)
This study with (N=255) test subjects, examined the relations between strategies for social self-deception, narcissistic personality traits, attention-seeking and the test subjects' perceived self-esteem on Facebook. Furthermore, it examined how these three aspects related to time spent on Facebook and number of friends on Facebook. A measuring tool was constructed to capture two main dimensions - 'situating' and 'persuasive', as per Roy Dings (2017) theory. An exploratory factor analysis resulted in only one dimension, and three multiple regression analyses showed that the three aspects did predict the usage of strategies for social self-deception, with narcissistic personality traits being the strongest predictor. Low self-esteem correlated to spending more time on Facebook, and narcissism correlated to having a higher number of friends on Facebook. Another discovery was that people, regardless of age, were nearly equally likely to use strategies for social self-deception on Facebook. Finally, limitations and suggestions for future studies are discussed.

The language of non-commercial advertising: A pragmatic approach

Rath Foley, Anna January 2020 (has links)
The current study has explored the language of 30 non-commercial advertisements, both quantitatively and qualitatively, within the framework of pragmatics. The main incentive was to conduct an investigation into how the advertiser working with such a philanthropic genre employs attention-seeking, informing and persuading functions when she communicates with her audience. Orbiting around key notions of Relevance Theory (1986; 1995; 2012) and Tanaka’s pragmatic approach to advertising (2005), the study attempted to determine whether non-commercial advertising differs from its commercial counterpart in terms of informing and persuading intentions, and to examine the extent to which non-commercial advertising relies on internal and external contexts in its explicit and implicit language. The findings show that non-commercial advertising utilises attention-seeking, informing and persuading functions in a variable fashion since they can be incorporated into complex arrangements in which they sometimes overlap or collaborate. This fuse appears to enable the advertiser to achieve her intended meaning at the same time as she can make efficient use of space and time. The study also found that there are non-commercial advertisements that completely lack persuasion. By excluding explicit and implicit imperative speech acts, conjunctive adjuncts and pronouns that involve the audience, such advertisements appear to be solely objective and informative. In turn, these findings suggest that the informing function in non-commercial advertising is not always subordinated to the persuading function, which contrasts with the informing-persuading hierarchy in commercial advertising. Finally, since the creator of non-commercial advertising frequently exposes her audience to weak relevance, she requires them to locate and solve explicatures and implicatures with help from both internal and external contexts, which strengthens Tanaka’s (2005) claim that advertisers treat their audience as potentially creative and resourceful once attention has been attracted and sustained.
