Les confréries d'Avignon. De la religion civique à l'identité urbaine (XIVe et XVe siècles) / The confraternities of Avignon. From civic religion to urban identity (14th and 15th centuries)Lv, Zhao 16 December 2017 (has links)
As the result of the catastrophes of the 14th and 15th centuries, especially with the arrival and the departure of the papal court, the immigrant population, from various origins, becomes the majority of the inhabitants of Avignon. The urban community undergoes the transformations at the end of the Middle Ages. After a deconstruction of the traditional definitions of "civic religion" and "urban identity", our research, relying on the recent notion of "citadinité" and the manuscript sources – the statutes of the confraternities, their administration registers, their account books and the testaments of Avignoneses – explores how the confraternities forge the civic religion and how the urban identity is marked by the initiatives of the city dwellers.Under the authority of the Church, the Avignoneses founded almost one hundred confraternities during the 14th and 15th centuries. They group, generally without any social criteria, the city dwellers with varied profiles and assume the multiple functions, which favor the integration of their members into an urban life. The government of "simi-consulate" of the confraternities, with correspondences to the regime of the communal government, promotes the citadinization of the inhabitants in the political dimension. The multiplicity of the resources and the expenses leads the confraternities into the city’s economy. The collective devotion, which is centered on the worship of the patron(s) saint(s) and the commemoration of the dead, reveals the presence of the fraternal communities in the city. Along with the charities to the external people, the fraternal groups, by means of an efficient system of mutual assistance, contribute to the settlement of newcomers and help the Avignoneses resist the precariousness of urban life.Practicing the moralization and the punishment, the confraternities integrate the individuals into their communities and constitute the places of sociability, in which the personal morality and the peace with others arouse the assimilation and the citadinization. Through the collective devotion, the confraternities nourish not only a civic religion characterized by the diversity of cults of saints, which endows the urban time with varied rhythms. By encouraging the individual and collective movements, they also extend the individuals’ social networks and dilute the boundaries within the urban space. Overall, the confraternities, who shape the social relationships between the people and the links between the city and its residents, contribute to the formation of the civic religion and the urban identity.

Alternativa fakta i 1300-talets krönikor : Olika perspektiv i senmedeltida historiografi på olyckan vid Clemens V:s kröning 1305 / Alternative facts in 14th century chronicles : Different perspectives in late medieval historiography on the accident at Pope Clement V's coronation in 1305Wibacke, Elis January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to analyse the construction of a historical event in late medieval chronicles, in a way that increases our understanding of the mechanisms behind historiography. The analysis is based on how the coronation of Pope Clement V in 1305 and the accident which then took place, in which a wall crashed and killed a number of people, is depicted in a selection of 14th century chronicles, mainly from France. This event has been largely overlooked by previous research on Clement V and the Avignon Papacy, which has tended to emphasise its meaning as a bad omen for the pope. Through a close reading of the chronicles inspired by a comparative methodological approach and the theoretical framework of Suzanne Fleischman this thesis proves that the French chronicles do not give much actual support for the interpretation of the accident as a bad omen and that the event occurs in multiple versions, which can be explained by the chroniclers’ different attitudes towards the alliance between Pope Clement and King Philip the Fair of France. The different versions are dependent on the texts’ contrasting aims and uses of narratives and facts, and is ultimately defined by the communicative situation between writer and reader.

Les architectes de l'eau en Basse Provence de la Renaissance au XXe siècle / The architects of water in the lower Provence Region between the Renaissance and the XXth Century.Jean, Alain Michel 21 January 2011 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the big hydraulic facilities in the lower Provence region, between the Renaissance and the XXth century. Náročné kamenické prvky v Parléřovské dílně v evropském kontextu / Exacting stone components made by Parler's workshop in European contextPavlíčková, Anna January 2016 (has links)
The present work relates to the transfer of the inspirational elements used in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague focusing on the hanging bolts in the sacristy of the cathedral. Two architects, Matthias of Arras and Peter Parler, participated in the construction of St. Vitus Cathedral in the 14th. Century Both of these builders were inspired by the most important buildings of contemporary Europe and the experience they gained was incorporated in the Prague cathedral. Through thorough research of the life of Matthias of Arras I am able to describe this builder as a unique personality who used a bold modern style for the construction of Prague cathedral and laid the foundation for cathedral architecture in Bohemia. Subsequent analysis of selected buildings constructed in the south of France during the 13th. and the first half of the 14th. centuries reveals many features which exhibit common characteristics with elements used on St. Vitus Cathedral, thus indicating the sources of inspiration for Prague cathedral. Both builders work meets in a space called "Old Sacristy" decorated with two unique pendant bosses. Thanks to exhaustive investigation it has been clarified that these bosses originated from southern France and Alsace. It has also been possible to chart their transmission throughout Europe and to...

České země a avignonské papežství v letech 1378-1419, diplomatické aspekty / The Czech lands and the avignon papacy in the period 1378-1419, diplomatic aspectsVlková, Tereza January 2012 (has links)
0 ABSTRACT In my thesis I focus on the political situation in the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Kingdom of France during the Great Western Schism, particularly its first two thirds. I put emphasis on the personality of Honoré Bovet, who was a diplomat and a messenger of the French king and who visited the court of the Bohemian king, Wecleslas IV. in 1399 My work is based on primary and secondary sources and scientific and specialised literature concerning the subject mentioned above. In addition I made use of my one- semester study program in France where I attended the lectures of and consultations with French medieval historians. First I describe in the thesis the ecclesiastical and political situation in both kingdoms. The next chapters are dedicated to the personality of Honoré Bovet and his writings related to his opinion on the Great Western Schism and the church in general. As a result of the research I present a general attitude of the French Kingdom to the Bohemian Kingdom, particularly king Wenceslas IV, in the period of the Great Western Schism and the dual papacy. Moreover, based on his writings I express Bovet's view of the Schism and the personalities involved in the Schism.
