We agreed to discuss conceptions about the backwoods and backwoodsmen, disseminated by folklorits´ onset, the instance of literacy, of sciences, and public power, that reproduce equivocate apprehension about backwoodsmen s culture which its origin forwards significantly to indigenous and African cultural heritage. These affirmations are marked by persistent strategies kept as expressions of popular culture. We analyzed the dimension of their argument and point of views, giving privilege to the narratives produced about and by backwoodsmen, with the objective to evidence distinct perspectives of its statement s content / Neste estudo tratamos de culturas tradicionais no Ceará, com ênfase às experiências e modos de ser e viver de populações pobres sertanejas. Procuramos problematizar abordagens e concepções sobre o sertão e sertanejos, disseminadas por investidas de folcloristas, de instâncias do letramento, das ciências, e de poderes públicos, que reproduzem apreensões equivocadas acerca de culturas sertanejas cujas origens remetem, significativamente, a heranças culturais de povos indígenas e africanos. Estas asserções estão marcadas por persistentes estratégias de enfrentamento mantidas como expressões da chamada cultura popular. Analisamos pontos de vista e dimensões de seus argumentos, privilegiando narrativas produzidas sobre e por sertanejos, com o intuito de evidenciar distintas perspectivas quanto ao conteúdo de seus enunciados

The intention is to elaborate on the following problems: What elements make up the setting in Os Sertões and Grande Sertão: Veredas? How do the multiple settings influence the basic elements of the narrative and vice-versa? In what way could the BACKLANDS take on the grouping effect in Os Sertões and Grande Sertão: Veredas. The studies of Gaston Bachelard, of Antonio Dimas and, thirdly, of Milton Santos will be considered basic to this survey, as well as borrowing from geography. Finally, key-concepts will be extracted, such as the concept of setting, place and landscape. Chapter I deals with the elements of setting that make up Os Sertões; chapter II covers the elements of setting relative to Grande Sertão: Veredas and, following these, chapter III proposes an evaluation of the elements of setting common to both narrative. It also seeks to learn how the BACKLANDS becomes a grouping element of these settings. The backlands is distinguished in this work, as a macro-setting, divided into micro-settings represented by natural elements formed by water, by flora and by fauna. The artificial settings are distinguished by the constructions that revolve around the plantation, the farm, the house, the two-story house, the cabin, the church, the cemetary, and the jail. The point of view of these elements can be either exterior or interior. Thus, this work seeks to rescue aspects of the creation of setting, surrounded in a hybrid discussion of journalism, geology, science, history, sociology and literatura in Os Sertões, as well as latent manifestations of the creation of setting in Grande Sertão: Veredas / O objetivo desta pesquisa é mostrar como se constrói o espaço nas narrativas: Os Sertões, de Euclides da Cunha e Grande Sertão: Veredas, de João Guimarães Rosa. Intenta-se refletir sobre os seguintes problemas: Que elementos compõem o espaço em Os Sertões e Grande Sertão: Veredas? Como os múltiplos espaços influenciam nos elementos componenciais da narrativa e vice-versa? De que forma o SERTÃO pode se tornar o elemento aglutinante da espacialidade em Os Sertões e Grande Sertão: Veredas? Consideram-se basilares para esta pesquisa o estudo de Gaston Bachelard, o de Antonio Dimas e, o de um terceiro, Milton Santos, tomado de empréstimo à Geografia. Do último, serão extraídos conceitos-chave como a concepção de espaço, lugar e paisagem. O capítulo I trata dos elementos espaciais que compõem Os Sertões; o capítulo II aborda os elementos espaciais relativos à Grande Sertão: Veredas e, em seguida, no capítulo III, propõe-se uma avaliação dos elementos espaciais comuns a ambas as narrativas, também busca-se apreender como o SERTÃO se torna o elemento aglutinante dessas espacialidades. O sertão é destacado, nesse trabalho, como macro-espaço, dividido em micro-espaços representados por elementos naturais formados pelo aquático, pela flora e pela fauna. Quanto aos espaços artificiais, salientam-se as construções que envolvem a fazenda, o sítio, a casa, o sobrado, a choupana, a igreja, o cemitério, a cadeia, seja do ponto-de-vista interior, seja do exterior. Assim, procurou-se resgatar traços da criação espacial, envoltos em um discurso híbrido de jornalismo, geologia, ciências, história, sociologia e literatura, em Os Sertões, assim como manifestações latentes da criação espacial em Grande Sertão: Veredas
