Esplanade Ridge is the largest downtown historic district in New Orleans, a place that is known as the home of the "last Creole aristocrats" and described as the French Creole version of St. Charles Avenue during the 1800's (Jensen A-I). This historically significant neighborhood is suffering much like other metropolitan areas in New Orleans. Amidst the urban neighborhoods ofNew Orleans often exists rampant property deterioration, crime, litter and population loss. Typical problems in any city, these frightening realities often make imagining the future of Esplanade Ridge a depressing experience. However, alongside the problems endures a rich cultural history and offering. New Orleans architectural treasures are among the finest in the nation; Esplanade Ridge boasts Greek Revival, Classic, Italianate, and High Victorian architectural styles built by such noted architects as Henry Howard, James Freret and James Gallier(Jensen A-I). Rich with history, Esplanade Ridge and all New Orleans neighborhoods must fight to maintain and improve their current condition, in order to ensure a positive cultural future for all New Orleans residents.

From my particular reading of the novel, there is the perception that the relationship between the couple David and Giovanni is the core of the narrative. Concerning the issue of desire, I will discuss it as multiplicity. Furthermore, regarding identity, I will discuss its subversive character, the diaspora and the in-between, which are snippets that I consider very meaningful to the novel and its author. Regarding the matter of space, through my point of view, it has a peripheral atmosphere, which reflects the social marginalization of the characters that inhabit and move around it. Moreover, the masculinity, which I also consider as a significant issue in the work of Baldwin is connected, in my conception, to sexual ambiguity. I emphasize that, considering the matters of space and masculinity, this research will approach Giovannni`s Room, but it will be also extended to the novels Another Country and Just Above My Head, also written by Baldwin, for their construction is marked, through my point of view, by the difference. In order to better conduct this academic paper, I will select a theoretical framework, which includes Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Stuart Hall, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Georges Battaile, Homi Bhabha, Gaston Bachelard, Fernando Seffner and other contributors. / Propõe-se neste trabalho cartografar o desejo, a identidade, a espacialidade e outros aspectos que estão permeados pela diferença, no romance Giovanni`s Room, de autoria do afro-americano James Baldwin, publicado em 1956. Na minha proposta de leitura do romance, com a percepção de que a sua narrativa gira em torno da relação do casal de amantes David e Giovanni, discuto o desejo como multiplicidade. No que concerne às questões relacionadas à identidade, as discussões abordam a transgressão, a diáspora e o entre-lugar, recortes que considero significativos com relação à obra e ao autor. Quanto à temática da espacialidade, esta tem, na minha percepção, uma configuração periférica, que remete à condição marginal das personagens que nela habitam e circulam. A masculinidade, na obra de Baldwin está ligada, na minha leitura, à ambiguidade sexual. Ressalto que, quanto à masculinidade e à espacialidade, a pesquisa abordará, além de Giovanni`s Room, os romances Another Country e Just Above My Head, de autoria de James Baldwin, por também terem, na minha concepção, sua configuração ligada à diferença. Como suporte teórico para as questões pertinentes a essa pesquisa, utilizarei as contribuições de Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Stuart Hall, Georges Bataille, Gaston Bachelard, Fernando Seffner, entre outros.

Underground Men: Alternative Masculinities and the Politics of Performance in African American Literature and Culture

This study explores intersections between performance, race and masculinity within a variety of expressive cultural contexts during and after the African American Civil Rights Movement. I maintain that the work of James Baldwin is best situated to help us navigate this cross section, as his fiction and cultural criticism focus heavily on the stage in all its incarnations as a space for negotiating the possibilities and limits of expressive culture in combating harmful racial narratives imposed upon black men in America. My thesis begins with a close reading of the performers populating his story collection Going to Meet the Man (1965) before broadening my scope in the following chapters to include analyses of the diametric masculinities in the world of professional boxing and the black roots of the American punk movement. Engaging with theorists like Judith Butler, bell hooks and Paul Gilroy, Underground Men attempts to put these seemingly disparate corners of American life into a dynamic conversation that broadens our understanding through a novel application of critical race, gender and performance theories. Baldwin and his orbiting criticism remain the hub of my investigation throughout, and I use his template of black genius performance outlined in works like Tell Me How Long the Train’s Been Gone (1967) and Just Above My Head (1977) to aid our understanding of how performance prescribes and scrambles dominant narratives about black men after the sexual revolution.

The Trinitarian Dimensions of Cistercian Eucharistic Theology

Thesis advisor: Boyd T. Coolman / William of Saint-Thierry, Isaac of Stella, and Baldwin of Forde created a distinctly Cistercian body of Eucharistic theology in the twelfth century. But despite one article that examines none of the Eucharistic treatises and omits Isaac and Baldwin, there is no scholarly account of Cistercian Eucharistic theology. Nor is there more generally a historical work that examines the connection between medieval Trinitarian and Eucharistic theology. This dissertation seeks to fill both lacunae. The introduction of the dissertation sets the historical and scholarly context for investigation. Chapter 1 examines the thought of William of Saint-Thierry, who has the most developed understanding of Eucharistic presence, conversion, and reception. It also treats the connections William draws between Eucharistic reception and meditation on scripture and the passion of Christ. Chapter 2 treats Isaac of Stella, who uses more intellectualist imagery and imagery of the mystical body of Christ. Chapter 3 studies Baldwin of Forde, who argues that the term transubstantiation best describe Eucharistic conversion. Baldwin emphasizes reception by faith in the truth about Christ. Chapter 5 offers a brief conclusion. These Cistercian authors thought that the character of God as a Trinity of persons united in essence provides the form or structure of the economy of salvation—especially its turning point or climax, the Eucharist. This emphasis on Trintiarian dimensions is the hallmark of Cistercian Eucharistic theology. They saw the Eucharist as an analogue to the Incarnation, a site where the economic missions of the Trinity take place. In the Eucharist, God the Father draws those who receive to himself by uniting them to the body and blood of the Son. This unity brings an increase of unity with the Holy Spirit. Once united to the Son and Spirit, the faithful are united to the Father and to the unity that all three persons share. The Eucharist is, then, not only a site of God’s movement toward human beings, but of human movement back toward God. It acts as a kind of pivot point in the economy of salvation: the moment where the outpouring of the Son and Spirit join most deeply with the faithful and draw them back to the Father. The Eucharist also binds the members of the Church, the body of Christ, to each other and to their Head in his act of self-offering to the Father. It connects the meditation, sacrifices, and offering of their own lives to that of Christ, with which they are offered to the Father.

In 1880 Gerard Baldwin Brown (1849-1932) was appointed by Edinburgh University as its first Watson Gordon Professor of Fine Art. Over the fifty-year period that he held the professorship he was to become well-known as a scholar of Anglo-Saxon art and culture, preparing the first comprehensive study of Anglo-Saxon church architecture in England as part of a six volume study of the arts in early England. In 1905 he produced a monograph, The Care of Ancient Monuments (Cambridge, 1905) which provided a comprehensive assessment of the protective systems in place across Europe and America for the protection of ancient buildings and monuments and made strong recommendations for the strengthening of the protective measures in Britain. These recommendations led amongst other things to the creation of Britain’s first national inventory bodies but Baldwin Brown’s call for the protection of occupied ancient buildings to be improved was not successful. Although The Care of Ancient Monuments appeared to be a departure from Baldwin Brown’s usual interests, this research suggests that it formed part of the author’s longer-term commitment to the protection of long-lived elements of the built environment, and that his views were strongly influenced by his experience of pursuing preservation campaigns in Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns. This study draws on a detailed study of Baldwin Brown’s preservation-related campaigns in Edinburgh to trace the coalescence of an urban preservation movement in the city in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It draws on a range of information sources including a hitherto unidentified collection of letters to the press, reports of lectures and published papers to trace the development of his preservation philosophy and the nature and scope of his preservation campaigns. It also explores the mechanisms available to would-be preservationists in the absence of effective legislation, and it assesses Baldwin Brown’s broader significance in the development of the urban preservation movement.

'In the same boat now': peoples of the African diaspora and/as immigrants: the politics of race, migration, and nation in twentieth-century American literature

In this dissertation, I take seriously Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assertion that even though non-indigenous peoples in America "may have come over on different ships," they are all, in spite of and in the face of their particular ethnic, racial, gender, class, tribal, or national identities, nevertheless together "in the same boat now." In particular, in this project I reconstruct and reinterpret the process of migration, assimilation, and the realization of full sociopolitical participation in the United States in terms of the relationship between peoples of African descent--who were compelled to migrate as slaves across the Middle Passage, and who also voluntarily immigrated from various localities within the Black Atlantic--and select groups of immigrants from other locations around the globe. In my thesis, I concentrate on novels by William Faulkner, Paule Marshall, James Baldwin, Gayl Jones, and cartoonist Chris Ware, and examine closely how these authors, in their respective texts, work to restructure, reimagine, and thereby challenge the enshrined American narratives of national belonging and acculturation through literary constructions of the identities and experiences of peoples of African descent, as migrants themselves, in tandem with their social, political, economic, sexual, racial, and cultural engagements with other immigrants to the nation-state. In the introduction to my text, I survey and carefully synthesize diverse literary, historical, sociological, postcolonial, and feminist approaches to and theories of the problems of race, immigration, and nationalization, and formulate a new critical interdisciplinary framework for the mutual (de)construction of peoples of African descent as immigrants among immigrants in America.
