Cette thèse s’inscrit dans une réflexion géographique sur la façon dont les rapports des migrants à l’espace s’accommodent des formes contemporaines de la migration. Le choix des migrants sénégalais et des Gambiens apporte un éclairage sur la manière dont ces individus-acteurs venus de pays pauvres et émigrant vers la métropole européenne de Barcelone, engagent un processus de territorialisation et de construction identitaire. Ce questionnement met aussi en lumière les écarts économiques, spatiaux et culturels qui accompagnent l’expérience migratoire. L’analyse croisée et multi-scalaire de données statistiques et de données qualitatives issues d’entretiens de types biographiques a permis de décrypter le processus de construction de l’habiter en situation migratoire, conçu comme un « système de liens et de lieux » complexe. Cet habiter relève, d’une part, d’une inscription plurielle et différenciée des Sénégalais et des Gambiens dans l’espace à travers leurs pratiques résidentielles, les échanges dans les lieux de vie (travail et sociabilités) et la fabrique de lieux au quotidien, et, d’autre part, de différentes formes d’ancrages et d’identification sous-tendues par une tension permanente entre l’ici et l’ailleurs. L’habiter en situation migratoire se lit également comme un processus temporel, dynamique et fluctuant, se recomposant au fil de la trajectoire de vie des migrants, se réajustant sans cesse en fonction des expériences socio-spatiales et des contextes locaux. Le « savoir habiter » des migrants confirme ainsi une négociation constante entre un ensemble de contraintes et de possibilités, entre logiques individuelles et collectives, faisant émerger différentes formes de territorialisation et figures de spatialité de l’habiter. / This thesis contributes to a geographical reflection on the way in which the relationships of migrants to space are shaped contemporary forms of migration. The choice of the Senegalese and Gambian migrants sheds light on the way by which these individual-actors coming from poor countries and emigrating towards the European metropolis of Barcelona engage in a process of territorialisation and identity construction. This case study also highlights the economic, spatial and cultural gaps which accompany the migratory experience. The combined and multi-scalar analysis of statistical data and qualitative data resulting from biographical interviews enables to decipher the construction process of dwelling in migratory situations, conceived as a complex “system of bonds and places”. Dwelling, is produced on the one hand, by a plural and differentiated inscription of the Senegalese and Gambians in space through their residential practices, the exchanges in their places of living, and the daily construction of places, and, on the other hand, various forms of anchoring and identification underpinned by a permanent tension between the "here" and the "elsewhere". Dwelling in migratory situation is also analyzed as a temporal process, dynamic and fluctuating, recomposing itself along the life trajectory of the migrants, readjusting unceasingly according to the socio-space experiences and the local contexts. The “dwelling capacity” of migrants thus confirms a constant negotiation between a whole of constraints and possibilities, between individual and collective logics, producing various forms of territorialisation and spatial figures of spatiality.

This thesis proposes to investigate the conflict between the programmed space (which was designed rationally in accordance to the Modern Movement principles) and the living experience of the city, delineated by everyday life and its expressions. Such investigation will take advantage of the observation and analysis of mediating and interactive processes, or those situated between mediation and interaction. The conflict between the designed reality and the one effectively experienced can be methodologically observed through random movements instructed by expressions of communication. Such analysis focuses on the visual characteristics that communicate distinct living models and that go beyond mere descriptive and analytical phenomena. In sum, this thesis proposes to investigate how the Modern ideals related to architectural design were experienced in everyday life, through the analysis of images obtained both in Sao Paulo (at the Copan) and Berlin (at the Niemeyer-Haus, the building designed by Niemeyer in Hansaviertel). These images, taken as signs of visualities and visibilities, are the product of the life of the inhabitants of these buildings, who transform the original designs and reinvent the space through everyday life. The basic hypothesis is that these transformations promote an endless renovation of urban communication, thus making it possible to know the city by understanding living as a cultural act. The authors and concepts that are relevant to this analysis concern: the relationship between the designed space and the experienced city, and the notions of visuality and visibility developed by Lucrécia Ferrara; the characterization of the everyday living and its expressions described in the work of Michel de Certeau, Milton Santos and Jane Jacobs; the dialogue between living and inhabiting as invention/transcreation (Haroldo de Campos e Julio Plaza); and finally the semiotic horizon of C. S. Peirce, that guided the development of this research / O presente trabalho tem como objeto empírico a cidade, especificamente o centro de São Paulo (marcado pelo edifício Copan, projetado na década de 1950 por Oscar Niemeyer) e o bairro berlinense Hansaviertel (reconstruído no final de 1950 de acordo com as premissas do Movimento Moderno). Busca-se, a partir da observação e análise de processos ora mediativos, ora interativos ou ainda situados entre a mediação e a interação, investigar o confronto entre o espaço programado (racionalmente projetado a partir do ideário que caracterizou o Movimento Moderno) e a instância vivida da cidade (modelada pelo cotidiano e por suas manifestações sígnicas). O embate entre o programado e o vivido pode ser metodologicamente flagrado a partir de deslocamentos feitos à deriva, orientados por manifestações comunicativas, e sua análise abrange principalmente as características de visualidade que, indo além da descrição e análise fenomênica, constroem-se como visibilidades e comunicam distintos modos de viver. Toni Morrison's recovery of the African-American presence in her novels is uniquely tied to the space of the kitchen. The recovery of the African-American presence has been accomplished in various ways for various groups: historians, critics, authors, sociologists. They have named names, recalled incidents, and 'discovered' texts. Recovery has been accomplished by reconstructing culture through songs, storytelling, folklore and myth. Morrison establishes a connection between the space of the Garden that represents a white male empowered world in which African-American women have difficulty establishing power to a space of the kitchen where we see how well each character has been able to confront the public sphere (garden) and maintain her sense of self and a sense of empowerment. Each character's interiority is reflected in the activities and her relationship to the kitchen.

The plays are approached from contemporary references, and they reiterate text organization to the spectacle with particularities to Seneca´s dramatic esthetics, which influenced western theater constitution. Seneca´s tragedies are not monolithic and neither is the drama genre.

From my particular reading of the novel, there is the perception that the relationship between the couple David and Giovanni is the core of the narrative. Concerning the issue of desire, I will discuss it as multiplicity. Furthermore, regarding identity, I will discuss its subversive character, the diaspora and the in-between, which are snippets that I consider very meaningful to the novel and its author. Regarding the matter of space, through my point of view, it has a peripheral atmosphere, which reflects the social marginalization of the characters that inhabit and move around it. Moreover, the masculinity, which I also consider as a significant issue in the work of Baldwin is connected, in my conception, to sexual ambiguity. I emphasize that, considering the matters of space and masculinity, this research will approach Giovannni`s Room, but it will be also extended to the novels Another Country and Just Above My Head, also written by Baldwin, for their construction is marked, through my point of view, by the difference. In order to better conduct this academic paper, I will select a theoretical framework, which includes Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Stuart Hall, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Georges Battaile, Homi Bhabha, Gaston Bachelard, Fernando Seffner and other contributors. / Propõe-se neste trabalho cartografar o desejo, a identidade, a espacialidade e outros aspectos que estão permeados pela diferença, no romance Giovanni`s Room, de autoria do afro-americano James Baldwin, publicado em 1956. Na minha proposta de leitura do romance, com a percepção de que a sua narrativa gira em torno da relação do casal de amantes David e Giovanni, discuto o desejo como multiplicidade. No que concerne às questões relacionadas à identidade, as discussões abordam a transgressão, a diáspora e o entre-lugar, recortes que considero significativos com relação à obra e ao autor. Quanto à temática da espacialidade, esta tem, na minha percepção, uma configuração periférica, que remete à condição marginal das personagens que nela habitam e circulam. A masculinidade, na obra de Baldwin está ligada, na minha leitura, à ambiguidade sexual. Ressalto que, quanto à masculinidade e à espacialidade, a pesquisa abordará, além de Giovanni`s Room, os romances Another Country e Just Above My Head, de autoria de James Baldwin, por também terem, na minha concepção, sua configuração ligada à diferença. Como suporte teórico para as questões pertinentes a essa pesquisa, utilizarei as contribuições de Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Stuart Hall, Georges Bataille, Gaston Bachelard, Fernando Seffner, entre outros.

[pt] A relação que o homem estabelece com o espaço natural a partir da necessidade de ocupação e humanização do território no Brasil, ao longo do processo histórico, sem dúvida passa por percepções conflitantes ou até mesmo antagônicas. A partir de um mapeamento das intrincadas relações entre natureza e artificio na constituição das paisagens brasileiras, tomando como referência principalmente o ambiente cultural da cidade do Rio de Janeiro desde as primeiras ocupações até o século XX, este trabalho busca gerar uma reflexão e uma problematização acerca da construção de uma espacialidade moderna, caracterizada por uma dependência complexa e orgânica entre arquitetura e meio, capaz de esmaecer seus limites e fronteiras, desconstruindo a velha dicotomia rígida entre campos, e propondo pensar natureza, arquitetura, paisagem, cidade,como novos domínios disciplinares de caráter híbrido. / [en] The relation that man establishes with the natural space since the need to occupy and humanize the territory in Brazil, during the historical process, certainly involves conflicting or even opposed perceptions. From a mapping of the intricate relation between nature and artifice in the constitution of Brazilian landscapes, taking as mainly reference the cultural environment of Rio de Janeiro city since the first occupations until the twentieth century, this work seeks to generate a reflection and questioning about the construction of a modern spatiality, characterized by a complex and organic dependency between architecture and environment, capable of fade their limits and boundaries, deconstructing the old rigid dichotomy between fields, and proposing to think nature, architecture, landscape, city, as new disciplinary fields of hybrid character.
