Vancouver Community College ABE student profile and use of support services

Nobel, Elizabeth Violet 11 1900 (has links)
The study described in the following pages was conducted in the summer of 19 9 3 at the King Edward Campus, (KEC) of Vancouver Community College. The subjects of the study were students attending classes at the Provincial Level of the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program at the college. The primary purpose of the study was to determine the characteristics of the students as compared with the literature, and to discover whether students used the support services designed to assist them. A student survey was developed and administered to students by instructors during class time. The sample was selected by targeting all Provincial Level classes in session at the time the survey was conducted, and thirty questionnaires were given to instructors in the self-paced program to be handed out to students when they were scheduled to come in. The information from the questionnaires was then entered into the computer and a statistical analysis was done. When the results of the study were compared with the information gathered from the literature review, it was learned that at KEC, the Provincial Level ABE student is more traditional than nontraditional, that is, the students were younger than anticipated, and the number of female students was only 3.8% higher than the ABE STUDENT PROFILE AND USE OF SUPPORT SERVICES III number of male students. It was also learned that the majority of the students had already completed secondary school before coming to study at KEC, but were stil l taking grade twelve level courses in order to have the prerequisite knowledge to enter the programs of their choice at Vancouver Community College or other institutions. Although students used the support services available to them, there were some differences in how the high proportion of second language speakers used them. However counselling, in particular, although used somewhat differently by second language speakers, was used by students at the Provincial Level for advising before registration, rather than for personal counselling or career planning. As colleges plan for the future, it has become even more important to obtain student feedback regarding services designed to assist them. The development of a student profile enables administrators and practitioners alike to gain insight into their student population and what the students perceive to be their needs. It is hoped that this study will be the first of many which will help to identify the needs and gaps in ABE programs and the services that are provided to support the students. / Education, Faculty of / Graduate

[en] HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE AND MEDIA IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] CONHECIMENTO HISTÓRICO E MÍDIA EM UMA ESCOLA DA REDE MUNICIPAL DE ENSINO DO RIO DE JANEIRO

PATRICIA TEIXEIRA DE SA 23 November 2016 (has links)
[en] The thesis discusses the construction of historical knowledge in schools in the context of media coverage. One of the main objectives of the study was to analyse dialogues and educational activities, with regards to historical learning. Another spectrum is related more specifically to the joining of media logic and the logic of school historical knowledge. Is the historical learning, as promoted in the school, affected by the context of the media coverage? Among the school historical narratives, how do the media narratives present themselves? What are the students views on the history being taught? What about history in media? History lessons were observed in three 9th grade classes in a public school in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, with questionnaires and group interviews with students. The research documents are composed of 1381 minutes of audio class recordings, field notes, 93 questionnaires and 20 student interviews. Data was analyzed using the Atlas T software for the tasks of storing, categorizing and establishig cross-references of the empirical material. The concepts of historical formation, historical culture, multiple literacies, mediatization and social languages were articulated in the analysis of the following categories created: historical concept, teacher-student dialogue, relations with the present, negotiation, media, technology, video production, use of textbooks and views of history taught. The study showed students appreciation of interactive discussions for the promotion of significant historical learning. It also showed critical views of the ways of learning induced by the school centered on the written word. The media was present in the history lessons observed and enabled more flexible one-way historical narratives. Despite claiming that the media feeds their historical imagination, the students do not confer a high degree of reliability in media narratives, valuing the printed word and the teacher s word.

The Scope and content of the rights to ‘Basic Education’ and its implementation in the Eastern Cape

Johannes, Warren Dewald January 2013 (has links)
In terms of Section 29 (1) of the Constitution, everyone has the right to basic education. This right is not subject to ‘reasonable legislative and other measures, available resources and progressive realisation.’ The right to basic, compulsory education is widely regarded as a fundamental human right. For example, this right is included in a number of international human rights treaties such as the ‘Universal Declaration of Human Rights’, the ‘International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights,’ the ‘African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child’, the ‘Convention on the Rights of the Child’, the ‘Dakar Framework for Action: Education for All’, and ‘UNESCO Convention against Discrimination in Education’. The South African Constitution, however, does not clarify the content and scope of the right to basic education. Consequently, the Constitution has given the state wide discretion to determine the scope, nature and content of this basic right. Apartheid left the South African education system fragmented and unequal. The South African educational system has gone through numerous curricula and institutional changes. The changes in the curriculum were part of the transformation process of the South African education system. In addition, the state has allocated substantial public funds towards basic education. However, the investment in basic education does not commensurate with the quality of teaching and learning in poor and marginalised schools. For example, several rural and farm schools in the Eastern Cape lacked toilet facilities; textbooks and other education support material; furniture; and other essential necessities. Education loses its transformative power when poor and marginalised schools continue to lack these essential services. Consequently, inequality is perpetuated and the poor and marginalised are unable to compete meaningfully in the social, economic and political life of South Africa. The mini dissertation concludes by recommending that the Department of Basic Education should ensure that all schools, especially those in rural communities and farms, have access to textbooks, qualified teachers, clean water and toilet facilities and other essential necessities needed for the delivery of quality basic education.

The study of the origins of the universe and life attracts men throughout their existence on Earth. So far, life has been not detected in other universe system apart from our solar one, but we already know that there are many planetary systems with good possibilities for that existence. This information come to school and must be worked on, in order to generate knowledge. The Brazilian education, especially in public schools, presents numerous problems related to learning, avoidance, lack of motivation for learners and teachers and little credibility as to the capacity of that educational structure to form citizens. From astronomy topics listed in Elementary Education curriculum and finding that there is deficiency in teacher?s training on basic knowledge of this science, it is proposed to draw up a paradidactic grounded in scientific conceptions, to be used in Basic Education. The paradidactic material was thought to be developed in comic format (HQ) in view of the official documents governing the Brazilian education when it is proposed the use of different languages in teaching. We have consulted the bibliography and have used the methods of qualitative and quantitative research. For the preparation of the paradidactic, there was a concern to support it at assumptions of the Theory of Meaningful Learning. We justified the preparation of the paradidactic and themes chosen from finding that there is little use of this science, which is interdisciplinary in basic education, since their subjects are part of the Basic Education curriculum, so they are attractive and offer possibilities to change the way education is conceived, pointing to the development of transdisciplinary proposals.

Cortez, Jucelino January 2018 (has links)
The actions that permeate the Education and the Teaching of Nature Sciences are in constant transformation, always seeking to meet the yearnings for the development of leamers qualified to face the challenges of an increasingly complex society. In this context, we seek to analyze teachers qualification and performance, relating this reality to the assumptions o f the Science-Technology-Society (STS) approach. This thesis presents the development and results obtained with the accomplishment of a study on qualitative approach, aiming, as its main objective, to identify which factors and conditions influence the use of such approach in Nature Sciences, in the public education system in the Northern region of Rio Grande do Sul. Bearing this in mind, we also aimed to reveal points of agreement between the cunent official documents which serve as a guideline for Brazilian education and the proposals put forward by theorists of the STS approach, as well as to understand in which ways the activities developed in these majors are related to the characteristics of the studied approach together with the Pedagogical Plans ofthe Undergraduate Courses in the area ofNature Sciences,. This study uses the works of Glen Aikenhead (1994), John Ziman (1980), (1994), Cerezo (1998), Cachapuz (1999, 2004), Santos and Mortimer (2002), Auler (2002) among others, as a theoretical reference and it was carried out following two stages: the first one, with an exploratory and bibliographical characteristic, compared to the official documents that serve as guidelines for managers in basic and higher education, and the second, using two case studies, with a research envolving the coordinators o f the undergraduate courses in the area o f N ature Sciences in Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in the selected region, and the third research, focusing on the graduates from these courses, who have already been teaching in public schools around these HEis. The initial stage was divided into three distinct searches: in the first, we carried out a study of the National Curricular Guidelines (DCNs) for Basic Education, in the second, we turned our attention to the DCNs for the Undergraduate Courses and in the third phase, we focused on the Pedagogical Plans of the Courses (PPCs) in Chemistry, Physics and Biological Sciences in the HEis of the region. The second stage was divided into two case studies, both using semi-structured interviews, submitting the collected data to the Discursive Textual Analysis procedure. The first one, promoting a dialogue with the course coordinators and the second, with teachers of the basic education network. The discussions and the results obtained in the three phases in the first stage, together with the two studies in the second stage, were the basis for five scientific articles that integrate the development of this thesis. With this research, we were able to identify how these current documents present the orientations that are aligned with the STS approach, thus directly influencing the main activities developed in the undergraduation courses selected in the region. The information on when these majors promote actions related to the STS approach, together with the analysis carried out by course coordinators and teachers in basic education, have helped us to emerge some factors and conditions that influence teachers in basic education to use the STS approach in their pedagogical practices. We believe that, this study will provide subsidies for new discussions on training, action and the use of the STS approach, aiming at motivating education subjects and also improving the quality of science teaching in our schools.

Capability theory, school dropout, exclusion and inclusion. The case of Youth Care School.

Solomon, Mark Deon January 2014 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / The study was prompted by the need to look at alternative options to mainstream education for learners who are too old for their grade, who have opted out of the education system but find themselves wanting to re-access the education system. Mainstream schooling seems a difficult option for many learners who would like to complete their basic education but find that they have problems fitting in the multi-age classroom. If they are too old for their grade, they are at risk of dropping out. Following a review of the literature around access, re-access, over-age, dropout, exclusion, inclusion, capability and a methodological approach to the study, the analysis will focus on the Youth Care School, a school for age-inappropriate learners as a form of intervention. This is a day school operating independently from the Western Cape Education Department, taking on learners who are too old for their grade, who would otherwise be on the streets. The theoretical perspective of the study will focus on the capability theory and alternative schools as forms of capability development.

A critical discourse analysis of public-private partnerships in education in Black Africa : A case of basic education in Liberia

Ssenyonjo, Habib January 2020 (has links)
With many countries in Black Africa immersed in external debts and yet others grappling with effects of civil wars and pandemics, social services such as basic education and primary health care pose challenges to them. To mitigate such shortcomings in the region, innovative ways to provide basic education are sought by the private sector. To meet the goals of education for all, national governments fall short of alternatives which gives rise to options like low fee private schools (LFPSs). But these innovative ways which are basically home-grown have got foreign competitors who provide the same basic education services. This thesis does not address the element of competition; rather it explores latest global changes that affect almost all aspects of social life – particularly basic education. This thesis looks at the public-private partnerships (PPPs) in education with low fee private schools (LFPSs) as one of the ‘innovative’ ways of providing basic education; this has had an effect of having entire basic education systems contracted out by national governments in the region. With weak public service systems, how can Black Africa implement PPPs with LFPSs? Using Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis – theory and method as well as operationalised space-times theory by Harvey (1990), this thesis probed PPPs with LFPSs in Liberia. The objectives were to understand the nature of educational reforms advocated in PPPs with LFPSs and to examine the kind of relationship between government and private sector service providers in PPPs with a view of locating the power within such relationships. Another objective was to probe how equitable and inclusive these basic education services provided by PPPs with LFPSs were. The study revealed that PPPs with LFPSs are implicated in denying access to the rural communities, limiting equitable and inclusive education to many social groups like the poor, girls and people with disabilities as well as seeming to undermine national and local governments due to power and ideology.

Concept development for facilitating the health and safety efficacy of South African mine workers

Tuchten, Gwyneth Myfanwy 28 April 2012 (has links)
The aim of this research is to inform conceptual approaches to health and safety (H&S) training for mineworkers in South Africa. The study focuses specifically on those mineworkers who have the least formal education or training, termed elementary workers (unskilled) and machinery operators and drivers (semi-skilled). It is an integrative literature review of sources drawn from mine health and safety in South Africa; self-efficacy; adult education and training (AET); education and training in mining; and relevant health promotion studies. The sources selected refer to work in the Southern African mine H&S context, or comparable situations. Compelling ideas and formulations for training are suggested in the literature of the different disciplines reviewed. A core concept considered is self-efficacy and the concept has substantial support in the literature. Both the term and concept of ‘self-efficacy’ have been used in South African and mining studies, but often without proper consideration of the sources of self-efficacy and its task- and context-specificity. The review reveals a lack of evidence of effective advocacy and training around generic mining occupational hazards, such as lung disease. H&S training is most evidently linked to operator training, which is aligned with unit-standards. However, substantial numbers of mineworkers lack adequate formal education for such training programmes, or the informal skills to be included via recognition of prior learning (RPL) processes. The proposed role of H&S representatives appears demanding, but the associated skills training outlined in public unit standards, lacks essential elements. The findings identify key considerations for an underpinning approach to H&S training for elementary mineworkers. These are: new learning required; risk perception and management; existing and associated logics; team ethos; maintaining new learning and practice; and a dialogic aspect to programmes. Additional findings suggest that the convergent effects of different policies result in the training of the least educated mineworkers being marginalised. The study concludes with six propositions that relate to the research and development of H&S training for mineworkers, public evidence of training, policy effects and the predicament of mineworkers who lack formal education. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Education Management and Policy Studies / unrestricted
