Metodik för analys av batteriets laddningscykel i entreprenadmaskiner : Prototypbyggnad och teori / Methodology for the Battery Charge Cycling Analysis on Construction Machines : Prototype Build and Theory

Lindström, Björn January 2015 (has links)
Volvo Construction Equipment AB, Volvo CE, is a global producer of construction machines. This thesis has focus on the battery in these machines that are providing power to the electrical system and start engine during cranking. With today’s technology there are new demands on the power supply in construction machines. The largest difference is in the demand for power when the engine is off and the only power source is the battery. A Lead-Acid starter battery is not constructed for this type of demand. Because of this Volvo CE has begun to build knowledge about how the charge in the battery is used and cycled during usage. This thesis has processed questions about which parameters and trends that are relevant to evaluate regarding the level of charge in the battery. The theory behind these parameters has been examined, described and evolved in the suggested methodology for analysis of the level of charge in the battery in construction machines. A method on how to extract identified data from the construction machines has been described in the work on the prototype equipment for collecting the data. The suggested methodology in this thesis to analyse the level of charge in the battery in construction equipment based on the user case may help to give answer to the question if the batteries used today are suitable for the new generation of construction machinery. This thesis contains a news value for Volvo CE and others since this methodology has not been described or used before at Volvo CE. The thesis also provide suggestion for a road to build more knowledge on batteries within Volvo CE.

The electric circuit : An explonary study with students in the age of eleven and fifteen and students who have studied the first course in physics (Fysik A), focusing on the electric circuit and its components

Johansson, Helen, Rengman, Helen January 2010 (has links)

/
This study has developed as a part of an ongoing co-operation between Taiwan, Finland and Sweden with the purpose of examining and comparing the conceptions of students of different ages concerning electric circuits. The purpose of this qualitative study is to find out what conceptions Swedish students of different ages have concerning the electric circuit. The study has been accomplished by means of semi-structured interviews. Altogether nine students in the age of eleven, fifteen, seventeen and eighteen have been interviewed. The interviews have been analyzed partly from Kärrqvist’s (1985) models that students have shown regarding electric circuits and partly by means of a phenomenographic method. The result inter alia demonstrates that three models are to be found among the respondents. One respondent showed a new model, which does not correspond to Kärrqvist’s (1985) models. The new model has been named “kopplingsberoende modell” (connection-dependent model). The analysis also shows that students know how to apply the concept of a closed circuit and that students describe electric circuits by discussing the wires of the circuit. The students tried to confirm the answers to the questions by discussing the wires. The study further shows that the students cannot give complete explanations to the function of electric components.

Implementation of Battery Energy Storage Systems in Residential Buildings : A case study of a multifamily building in southern Sweden, exploring profitability, self-sufficiency and environmental performance

Berg, Agnes, Detert, Emelie January 2021 (has links)
Energy storage is of increasing interest as an enabler of incorporating renewable intermittent power in the power systems globally. There are several technologies for energy storage, and this thesis focuses on battery energy storage systems (BESS). Previous research has shown that it is difficult to install BESS with a payback time within the battery lifetime, making it a challenge to realise profitable investments. The complexity of developing an optimal control of the battery is also documented in research as another challenge. Optimal sizing of the BESS could be a solution to the challenge of reaching profitability. The thesis is identifying and analysing some important technical and energy-related parameters affecting the performance of BESS installations. Identification and analysis of parameters affecting the performance will help build insight into the optimization of BESS and help enable the development of more efficient sizing and operation. By developing an algorithm simulating the BESS when controlled using two different strategies, this thesis additionally contributes to the research by displaying the complexity of battery control, which is realised by the energy management system (EMS). Thereby the thesis is adding to the research base for the future development of smarter and more optimal EMS. The main research methodologies used in the thesis was a literature study and a case study. The results suggested that the energy management strategy used in the battery control was gravely affecting the performance in terms of economic profitability, self-sufficiency and environmental impact. It was also implied that it is difficult to develop an efficient battery control to reach the full potential of the storage system. The main conclusions in this paper are that the most important parameters to consider when implementing a battery storage in a residential multifamily building are battery technology, battery capacity, building load, renewable energy generation, energy management strategy as well as the electricity prices and investment cost. The energy management strategy most favourable for the case building studied was found to be a combination of optimizing the self-sufficiency and performing peak shaving. It would also be preferable to further develop the battery control to also take electricity prices and balance services into consideration. For this, AI and machine learning could be integrated in the control of the system. According to the case study results, the lithium ion battery technology had better potential for reaching economic profitability while the nickel metal hydride technology showed better potential in terms of environmental performance. The choice of battery technology and energy management strategy should however be adjusted to the customer specific demands and prerequisites.
