An exploration of risk and protective variables in the bio–psychosocial field of South African adolescents with cystic fibrosis / Hugo C.J.Hugo, Carina Jacobie January 2011 (has links)
The general aim for this research was to explore and describe the risk and protective variables
in the bio–psychosocial field of adolescents with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and to describe how these
variables impact multi–dimensionally on such adolescents.
From the literature search it seemed as if interventions regarding CF focus mainly on the
medical condition. No literature could be found on the experiences of adolescents with CF. It is
clear that there is a dearth of research on adolescents with CF in general but also specifically on
the bio–psychosocial impact of this illness on adolescents in this challenging time of maturing.
The research design was a case study and focused on exploration and description of risk and
protective factors in the bio–psychosocial fields of adolescents with CF. Semi–structured
interviews were used as a data collecting method. Questions were open–ended, but focused on
the experience of adolescents having CF. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis based
on the following steps, which entailed among others transcribing data, reading, re–reading,
translation, coding, identifying and describing themes.
Facing a chronic illness and the intensive medical treatment required is a harsh reality that
influences the entire field of adolescents with CF. This research results expanded knowledge of
CF in adolescents within a Gestalt field perspective. Themes identified outline risk and
protective factors related to faith, daily routines and especially the effect of medical procedures
on time management, emotions, health and body–related aspects, frequent hospitalisation,
social support and future concerns. If the risk and protective variables in the field of adolescents
with CF is better understood from their own perspective, it is assumed that trans–disciplinary
interventions with a multi–dimensional focus will be targeted more accurately in intervention
strategies for this vulnerable group. / Thesis (M.A. (Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Gestalt play therapy with children receiving remedial interventionWren, Bridget Paula 30 June 2006 (has links)
Traditional remedial intervention programmes address academic and perceptual deficits but not emotional needs. Existing literature suggests that most children with learning disabilities have concomitant emotional, behavioural and social difficulties; however an apparent lack of consensus regarding the types of emotional and behavioural difficulties faced by these children exists especially amongst teachers, parents and professionals in the field of learning disabilities. The aim of this study was to discover which emotions might emerge during Gestalt play therapy sessions with children receiving remedial intervention. Three respondents from three different remedial programmes participated in the study. Data was gathered from the therapeutic sessions as well as from unstructured interviews with parents, teachers and professionals in the field of learning disabilities. Recommendations are made as to how Gestalt play therapy could be implemented as an additional support for children receiving remedial intervention. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Play Therapy)

Bewusmaking as fokus in opleidingsriglyne vir vrywillige beradersVorback, Alta Maria 30 June 2005 (has links)
Summaries in English and Afrikaans / Across the world children are affected by factors such as poverty, HIV/AIDS, divorce and loss. More organisations are getting involved in the training of voluntary counsellors. Although these counsellors have the necessary theoretical knowledge they still experience problems in working effectively with these children. Possible reasons for this are these counsellors' own unfinished issues and loss. Within this study the focus is on creating awareness for counsellors within training situations from a Gestalt approach.
As part of the fulfilment of the literature study an empirical study has been done. A qualitative study with a small portion of quantitative research has been done with the implementation of a training programme for voluntary counsellors. Various mediums were used to create heightened self-awareness with regard to various topics. Training guidelines are than given for creating awareness within training situations for voluntary counsellors.
'n Literatuurstudie is gedoen waartydens
aspekte bekom is:
vyf dae geskied.
beantwoord.

Text in English with Abstracts in English and Afrikaans / Health promotion is an educational tool that can be used to educate and create awareness of health issues through various media forms. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of TB Proof South Africa‘s Facebook page in creating TB awareness. The literature on TB, social media, health promotional campaigns and health promotional models was reviewed to contextualise this study. A qualitative case study approach was used to collect data from TB Proof South Africa‘s Facebook page. Data was collected using three data collection methods; namely, online ethnographic observation, textual analysis and visual analysis.
The findings indicate that TB Proof South Africa‘s Facebook page creates awareness of TB. Results from this study also suggested collaboration between South African healthcare professionals and traditional health practitioners in the fight against tuberculosis. The study advocates the need for comparative studies to explore the use of other health-related Facebook pages.
Paulo Freire se benadering tot leer en onderrig as teenvoeter vir die kultuur van geweld teen vroue en kinders in Suid-Afrika / Paulo Freire’s approach to learning and teaching as an antidote against the culture of violence against women and children in South AfricaKloppers, Daniel Frederik 09 1900 (has links)
The Brazilian educator Paulo Freire is considered to be one of the most important educators of the twentieth century. His approach to adult education has been applied to various fields, but never directly to prevent violence against women and children. The purpose of this study was to ascertain how Freire’s approach to learning and teaching can be used as an antidote against violence against women and children in South Africa. The study consists of an analytical literature review and qualitative study with eleven participants.
To answer the research question, the study commences with a literature study on the reasons for violence against women and children. Therafter the focus shifts to the adult basic education, adult learning and the restraints in adult basic education in South Africa. In the next chapter Freire’s work and his approach to adult education is dis-cussed. Key elements to his approach is tabled whereafter critique on and the im-portance of his approach, as well as its application in South Africa, is discussed.
In the qualitative empirical study the results of the questions in the interview guide with regard to violence and adult basic education is discussed, whereafter the results are analised in the final chapter in view of the literature study.
After the consideration of the data, it is recommended that cognisance must be taken of the challenges to adult basic education and Freire’s approachwhich can still be utilised as a medium in adult basic education to combat violence. A practical proposal for antiviolence education is made through a antiviolence lesson plan for ABE. The research concludes with limitations and recommendations. / ABET and Youth Development / M. Ed. Adopting green information and communication technology: barriers for South African small and medium enterprisesBok, Elizma Sharee 12 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa / Green information and communication technology (ICT) is viewed as a pioneering initiative that plays a key role in reducing the negative impact of ICT on the environment. The research problem of the study was the low green ICT adoption rate in South African small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The primary objective was to identify the most prominent barriers resulting in this low adoption rate. The first secondary objective was to determine the barrier with the strongest underlying correlation resulting in the low adoption rate of green ICT in South African SMEs. The second secondary objective was to recommend strategies on how to improve the adoption rate of green ICT. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data through electronic and paper-based surveys. A census study was conducted among owners and managers of high-technology-based SMEs located in Gauteng. An exploratory factor analysis was employed to identify the barriers resulting in the low adoption rate of green ICT. These barriers were found to be a lack of funding, awareness, legislation, skills, and knowledge based on complexity and uncertainty. A lack of funding was identified as the most prominent barrier to adopting low green ICT. Although five constructs were discussed in the literature, the overall results presented six components, with the construct of knowledge being made up of two parts – complexity and uncertainty. This study recommends that SMEs align green ICT initiatives with their strategic goals and that government consider more adequate support structures for SMEs. The study confirmed a low green ICT adoption rate in South African SMEs, and more research is required to explore the impact of each of the factors above on the environment.
