Characterization of Black Liquor Sprays for Application to Entrained-Flow Processes

Mackrory, Andrew John 14 November 2006 (has links)
In this work the differences between and characteristics of water and high solids, heated black liquor sprays from air-assist atomizers are examined. Sprays were imaged with a high speed camera and the images analyzed with computer code to produce droplet size data and macroscopic spray characteristics such as mass distribution. Fluid flow rates were measured to allow relevant dimensionless groups for the spray to be calculated. A 1000 degree C tubular furnace was placed around the spray to determine the effect of industrially relevant temperatures on the droplet formation process, relative to room-temperature conditions. It was found that high solids black liquor forms long, thin ligaments rather than droplets. In high-temperature surroundings the size of these ligaments increases, which from a comparison with theory in the literature was attributed to enhanced skin-formation driven by heat transfer. The data suggest that this skin formation may prevent secondary breakup. All sprays for both fluids produced droplet size mass distributions that were well described by the square-root normal distribution. The normalized width (s*) of these distributions was similar for all sprays and consistent with literature data for other nozzle designs (0.24 < s* < 0.38). The image analysis method assumed droplets were spheres with the same projected area. When this assumption was changed for black liquor sprays to a cylindrical droplet assumption, the shape and normalized width of the resulting mass distributions remained the same, but the representative diameter (calculated from surface area to volume ratios) decreased. Based on the agreement between the normalized distribution width in this work and that in the black liquor spraying literature it was concluded that the addition of atomizing air cannot be considered a means to narrow a droplet size distribution independent of droplet size. The results also indicate the importance of including the effects of skin formation and temperature- and time-dependent fluid properties in spray modeling. It is intended that these results contribute to increased understanding of the black liquor atomization process and lead to improved computational modeling of the same.

Comprehensive Black Liquor Droplet Combustion Studies

Ip, Leong-Teng 14 January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Black liquor, a byproduct from pulp production, is burned in a recovery boiler to generate electricity and recover inorganic materials. Black-liquor-droplet combustion is fundamental to understanding and potentially improving recovery boiler performance. This investigation reports comprehensive experimental data collected for a suite of five liquors. All the data were collected with newly-designed laboratory equipment, several aspects of which are unique. Single droplets were suspended on a thermocouple and heated in a furnace. Simultaneous diameter (size and shape), internal and surface temperatures, surface emissivity, and mass were measured under various furnace temperatures and gas compositions. The images recorded by the cameras show the droplet swelling characteristics during combustion. Droplets swell more in inert environments and with low heating-rates than in oxidizing environments and with high heating-rates. Softwood liquors show greater swelling than softwood/hardwood mixed liquors. The internal temperature measured by the thermocouple is lower than the surface temperature measured with the optical pyrometer. This temperature gradient between the droplet interior and surface can be larger than 300 K. Molecular-beam mass spectrometry data were used to determine droplet mass loss and off-gas composition. These mass-loss data differ by about 10% from the balance mass data. These data provide a self-consistent and reasonably comprehensive description of black-liquor-droplet reactivity. A one-dimensional transient droplet model predicts droplet temperatures and mass loss comparable to the data. The combustion of volatiles, droplet swelling, and enthalpy of devolatilization were proved to be significant. Intermediate-sized particle (ISP) formation was investigated with a suspended-droplet experimental technique. The images indicate that a small amount of particles are ejected during drying. Insignificant ISP formation during devolatilization occurs. Char burning and smelt oxidation produce the largest amount of ISP. Quantitative analyses indicate that both droplet solids-content and liquor type impact ISP formation. Longer burning times produce more ISP, with total ISP formation being 0.2-2% of dry solids. Sampled ISPs show consistent trends in surface structure and particle sizes under a scanning-electron-microscope, independent of the experimental conditions.

Black Liquor Droplet Combustion and Modeling

Roberts, Warren Benjamin 15 June 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Black liquor is an intermediate product of pulp production. Recovery boilers process black liquor to recover the inorganic material for recycling in the mill and to generate electricity and steam for the paper mill. Black liquor droplet combustion rates and mechanisms dictate many aspects of recovery boiler performance. This investigation documents new experimental data on single droplet pyrolysis and combustion in a laboratory furnace that mimics many of the essential features of commercial boilers (temperature, composition, droplet size, etc.). These experiments monitored single droplets placed on a thermocouple wire and suspended from a mass balance. Simultaneous video images and pyrometry data provide mass loss and internal temperature data. These investigations provide an extensive data set from which to validate a model and insight into the mechanisms of combustion. Particles burning in air expelled ejecta from the particle during the entire combustion process, though ejection rates during the late stages of char combustion were observed to be higher than during other stages. In addition, char burning began almost the instant the particle entered the reactor; showing significant overlap in the combustion processes. A transient, 1-dimensional, single-droplet model describes droplet combustion. This model solves the momentum, energy, species continuity, and overall continuity equations using the control volume method. The model uses the power-law scheme for combined advection diffusion, and the fully-implicit scheme for the time step. It predicts internal velocities, gas and solid temperatures (assumed equal), pressure, and composition. Pressure and velocity equations use Darcy's Law for flow through a porous medium. Modeling results show the large effect of swelling on all particle properties. This model describes the flame region by extending the control volume into the gas phase.

Agglomeration of Bed Particles in Low-Temperature Black Liquor Gasification

Woodruff, Mark A. 16 October 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The increasing concern for emissions and pollutants from power generation plants has increased the desire for and the study of biomass fuels. Biomass combustion produces less carbon monoxide as well as other greenhouse gases. Black liquor is a byproduct from the Kraft process in making paper. Black liquor can be gasified and used as a fuel in recovery boilers and fluidized bed steam reformers. Recovery boilers have a low efficiency and are used today because of their reliability. Steam reformers have a much higher efficiency but they are a relatively new science and are not as reliable. One of the reasons why steam reformers are not reliable is due to the agglomeration of the particles in the fluidized bed. The particles will stick together, agglomerate, at temperatures much lower than their melting temperature. The strength of these bonds and the temperature at which the bed agglomerates were studied as well as the effect of particle size on the heat transfer coefficient from the heaters to the bed material by means of experimentation and analysis. As the carbon content decreases, the agglomeration temperature also decreases. For 0.3% carbon content coated particles, the agglomeration temperature is approximately 490 ºC. The temperature at which the inter-particle bond strength increases dramatically also decreases. By comparing the inter-particle force with the collision force between particles, it was observed that when the velocity of the particles decreases below 1/500th of the free stream velocity, the particles will agglomerate.

Development and Implementation of an Online Kraft Black Liquor Viscosity Soft Sensor

Alabi, Sunday Boladale January 2010 (has links)
The recovery and recycling of the spent chemicals from the kraft pulping process are economically and environmentally essential in an integrated kraft pulp and paper mill. The recovery process can be optimised by firing high-solids black liquor in the recovery boiler. Unfortunately, due to a corresponding increase in the liquor viscosity, in many mills, black liquor is fired at reduced solids concentration to avoid possible rheological problems. Online measurement, monitoring and control of the liquor viscosity are deemed essential for the recovery boiler optimization. However, in most mills, including those in New Zealand, black liquor viscosity is not routinely measured. Four batches of black liquors having solids concentrations ranging between 47 % and 70 % and different residual alkali (RA) contents were obtained from Carter Holt Harvey Pulp and Paper (CHHP&P), Kinleith mill, New Zealand. Weak black liquor samples were obtained by diluting the concentrated samples with deionised water. The viscosities of the samples at solids concentrations ranging from 0 to 70 % were measured using open-cup rotational viscometers at temperatures ranging from 0 to 115 oC and shear rates between 10 and 2000 s-1. The effect of post-pulping process, liquor heat treatment (LHT) on the liquors’ viscosities was investigated in an autoclave at a temperature >=180 oC for at least 15 mins. The samples exhibit both Newtonian and non-Newtonian behaviours depending on temperature and solids concentration; the onsets of these behaviours are liquor-dependent. In conformity with the literature data, at high solids concentrations (> 50 %) and low temperatures, they exhibit shear-thinning behaviour with or without thixotropy but the shear-thinning/thixotropic characteristics disappear at high temperatures (>= 80 oC). Generally, when the apparent viscosities of the liquors are <= ~1000 cP, the liquors show a Newtonian or a near-Newtonian behaviour. These findings demonstrate that New Zealand black liquors can be safely treated as Newtonian fluids under industrial conditions. Further observations show that at low solids concentrations (< 50 %), viscosity is fairly independent of the RA content; however at solids concentrations > 50 %, viscosity decreases with increasing RA content of the liquor. This shows that the RA content of black liquor can be manipulated to control the viscosity of high-solids black liquors. The LHT process had negligible effect on the low-solids liquor viscosity but led to a significant and permanent reduction of the high-solids liquor viscosity by a factor of at least 6. Therefore, the incorporation of a LHT process into an existing kraft recovery process can help to obtain the benefits of high-solids liquor firing without a concern for the attending rheological problems. A variety of the existing and proposed viscosity models using the traditional regression modelling tools and an artificial neural network (ANN) paradigm were obtained under different constraints. Hitherto, the existing models rely on the traditional regression tools and they were mostly applicable to limited ranges of process conditions. On the one hand, composition-dependent models were obtained as a direct function of solids concentration and temperature, or solids concentration, temperature and shear rate; the relationships between these variables and the liquor viscosity are straight forward. The ANN-based models developed in this work were found to be superior to the traditional models in terms of accuracy, generalization capability and their applicability to a wide range of process conditions. If the parameters of the resulting ANN models can be successfully correlated with the liquor composition, the models would be suitable for online application. Unfortunately, black liquor viscosity depends on its composition in a complex manner; the direct correlation of its model parameters with the liquor composition is not yet a straight forward issue. On the other hand, for the first time in the Australasia, the limitations of the composition-dependent models were addressed using centrifugal pump performance parameters, which are easy to measure online. A variety of centrifugal pump-based models were developed based on the estimated data obtained via the Hydraulic Institute viscosity correction method. This is opposed to the traditional approaches, which depend largely on actual experimental data that could be difficult and expensive to obtain. The resulting age-independent centrifugal pump-based model was implemented online as a black liquor viscosity soft sensor at the number 5 recovery boiler at the CHHP&P, Kinleith mill, New Zealand where its performance was evaluated. The results confirm its ability to effectively account for variations in the liquor composition. Furthermore, it was able to give robust viscosity estimates in the presence of the changing pump’s operating point. Therefore, it is concluded that this study opens a new and an effective way for kraft black liquor viscosity sensor development.

Modificações estruturais da lignina causada por fungos / Modification of lignin structure caused by fungi

Negrão, Djanira Rodrigues 18 December 2015 (has links)
This natural polymer is characterized by high molecular weight (MW) and aromatic compounds. Physical-chemical processes can be employed to fragment lignin and to produce aromatic compounds to replace those from non-renewable sources such as petroleum. Biodegradation of lignin can provide low molecular weight compounds, such as phenols and antioxidants, which may be employed in various industrial processes. The aim of this work was to investigate the structural modification of lignin caused by basidiomycetes fungi, obtained from native forest and Eucalyptus fields. The biodegradation assay was done with10 fungi species cultivated with two concentrations of black licor (10% and 15%, v/v). The assay with 10% liquor, 10 species of basidiomycete fungi were used, and in the assay with 15% liquor, it was used only Pycnoporus sanguineus. The analyses carried out to determine the structural modification of lignin were: infrared spectroscopy (FTIR/ATR), liquid chromatography gel filtration and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). P. sanguineus and fungi of Trametes genera had high capacity to consume the lignin content in the 10% liquor, after 14 days of cultivation. After that, P. sanguineus was selected for assays of ligninolytic enzymes activities in the two liquor concentrations. High activities of manganese peroxidase (MnP), laccase and peroxidase were detected in the 10% liquor, whereas in the concentration of 15% only high MnP activity was detected. Biochemical Oxygen Demand, analysis (BOD) indicated that the biodegraded liquor had high BOD load, and it was toxic to Daphia magna and Hydra attenuata. Metabolites produced by the fungi in the liquor 10% were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which indicated mainly the production of sugars and alcohols in concentrations not far from their respective controls. Although the fungus is able to decrease molecular weight of lignin, its fragments derivatives can undergo condensation or repolymerization reactions, contributing, eventually, to increase its molecular weight

Simulação de unidade de recuperação química do processo de polpação kraft visando a obtenção de metanol celulósico / Simulation of a chemical recovery unit of kraft pulping to obtain the cellulosic methanol

Stape, Glauco Joubert 10 April 2017 (has links)
The increase in ecological awareness observed in recent years has led industries to invest in some production systems technologically less harmful to the environment, such as biorefineries. The industries form the pulp and paper sector, can be considered as biorefineries because they produce bioenergy and bioproducts from the use of biomassa, such as electric power and cellulosic pulp. In the kraft pulping process, the black liquor is obtained, wich contains organic and inorganic compounds from the raw material and from the chemicals reagents and additives used in the process. Black liquor contains, in addition to the dissolved lignin of the wood, some by-products formed in specific reactions and that can be recovered, among them methanol, which can make up 1% of the black liquor. The cellulosic methanol extracted in the treatment stage of contaminated condensate contains several compounds that are harmful to the environment and for this reason the cellulosic methanol is used as fuel, being incinerated for energy generation and for the reduction of contaminants to forms less harmful to the environment. Thus, obtaining the cellulosic methanol means purifying it so that it can be applied to other, more noble purposes, for example, as a reagent in the chemical industry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of a cellulosic methanol recovery and purification unit coupled to a modern cellulosic pulp production unit. Technical visits were made to the industrial unit and a vast bibliographical review of the process of evaporation of black liquor and formation of the compounds present in the cellulosic methanol was carried out in order to define the conditions and the most appropriate modeling and simulation methods for the development of this dissertation. The study was divided in two stages, the first one consisted of the use of the WinGEMS&reg; commercial simulator to construct a computational model of a black liquor evaporation unit, which proved to be suitable for the given application through comparative validations between simulation results with actual operating values. In the sequence, a computational model was developed for the planning of a cellulosic methanol purification and purification unit using Aspen Plus&reg; software being coupled to the previous model. In summary, the applied methodology proved to be satisfactory for the present study, being it possible to properly simulate a black liquor evaporation unit and to evaluate the industrial impact of coupling a cellulosic methanol purification unit to the cellulosic industry, in terms of equipment design, input quantification and cellulosic methanol purification.

Metod för provtagning av svartlut och analys av såpa i svartlut / Method for sampling black liquor and analysis of soap in black liquor

Hjalmarson, Inger-Johanne January 2019 (has links)
In paper pulp production, many details can be optimized. For optimal separation of soap from black liquor, it is important to know the amount of soap in the black liquor. A project to produce a method for sampling black liquor and a method for measuring how much soap is present in black liquor by centrifugation was done at Södra Cell Mönsterås. Through centrifugation faster analysis can be done. It took a long time to develop a satisfactory sampling method, but with the help of careful checking of temperature and time, a method was achieved that worked at temperatures between 90 and 100°C, which were the temperatures that were most frequently found, but are higher than the optimum temperature for soap separation. The black liquor turned out to be inhomogeneous, so the project failed to obtain an optimal analysis method within the framework of this project. In the experiment, the centrifuge settings were optimized to 87°C, 2500 rpm and 10 minutes Further attempts could provide more optimal settings for the centrifuge and a substitute for black liquor could make a validation of the centrifuge possible.

Studies to Avoid Decreased Efficiency in Multiple Stage Biological Wastewater Treatment Plants: Concerning Forests Industry Effluents

Analysing performance of bio-refinery systems by integrating black liquor gasification with chemical pulp mills

Naqvi, Muhammad Raza January 2012 (has links)
Mitigation of climate change and energy security are major driving forces for increased biomass utilization. The pulp and paper industry consumes a large proportion of the biomass worldwide including bark, wood residues, and black liquor. Due to the fact that modern mills have established infrastructure for handling and processing biomass, it is possible to lay foundation for future gasification based bio-refineries to poly-produce electricity, chemicals or bio-fuels together with pulp and paper products. There is a potential to export electricity or bio-fuels by improving energy systems of existing chemical pulp mills by integrating gasification technology. The present study investigates bio-fuel alternatives from the dry black liquor gasification (BLG) system with direct causticization and direct methane production from the catalytic hydrothermal gasification (CHG) system. The studied systems are compared with bio-fuel alternatives from the Chemrec BLG system and the improvements in the energy systems of the pulp mill are analyzed. The results are used to identify the efficient route based on system performance indicators e.g. material and energy balances to compare BLG systems and the conventional recovery boiler system, potential biofuel production together with biomass to biofuel conversion efficiency, energy ratios, potential CO2 mitigation combining on-site CO2 reduction using CO2 capture and potential CO2 offsets from biofuel use, and potential motor fuel replacement. The results showed that the dry BLG system for synthetic natural gas (SNG) production offers better integration opportunities with the chemical pulp mill in terms of overall material and energy balances. The biofuel production and conversion efficiency are higher in the CHG system than other studied configurations but at a cost of larger biomass import. The dry BLG system for SNG production achieved high biomass to biofuel efficiency and considerable biofuel production. The energy ratio is significant in the dry BLG (SNG) system with less biomass demand and considerable net steam production in the BLG island. The elimination of the lime kiln in the dry BLG systems resulted in reduced consequences of incremental biomass import and associated CO2 emissions. Hydrogen production in the dry BLG system showed the highest combined CO2 mitigation potential i.e. on-site CO2 capture potential and CO2 offset from biofuel replacing fossil fuel. The results also showed that the motor fuel replacement potential with SNG as compressed natural gas (CNG) replacing gasoline in the transport sector is significantly high in countries with large pulp industry. / QC 20120528
