Examining and Addressing Men's Boating Safety Behaviours in Inuvik, Northwest Territories

Injuries are one of the leading causes of death for individuals in Canada. Most injuries are predictable and preventable events that may be reduced by health promotion and injury prevention strategies. In particular, boating fatalities are a leading cause of injury death for men, particularly Aboriginal men, in northern Canada. Despite decades of water safety campaigns, Aboriginal men remain overrepresented in boating fatality statistics. Elevated rates of boating fatalities for Aboriginal men in northern Canada indicate that current water safety messages and initiatives may not be reaching those most vulnerable to boating incidents. My thesis, which is written in the publishable paper format and is comprised of two papers, investigates Aboriginal men’s boating incidents in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada. In paper one, I use a community-based participatory research methodology informed by postcolonial feminist theory to investigate the risk factors that Aboriginal male residents identified as contributing to boating incidents in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Together, we found that sex and gender, age, place, and lack of boating safety education are the most prominent risk factors for boating incidents. In paper two, I argue that community members are key holders of local knowledge and their expertise should thus be drawn upon by academic researchers and health programmers for the co-creation of injury prevention programs. In it, I provide an overview of the process that led to the co-creation of a boating education poster campaign in Inuvik. Together, the two papers in this thesis demonstrate that community-based strategies should be employed to address health inequities in boating incidents faced by Aboriginal men in the Northwest Territories.

Mytilus edulis as Bioindicator for Coastal Zone Environmental Assessment : A study of Kosterhavets Marine National Park

Mollusks growth is a very important and sensitive response to environmental stresses sincethey are good indicators of the available amount of contaminants in the water; reduced growth represents adverse environmental effects and possible effects on the population.Sweden has about 3,000 Natural Reserves and 28 National Parks. Kosterhavets is the first National Marine Park and it is located on the west coast of Sweden, it is also considered one of the most vulnerable areas since 6000 marine species can be found here and about200 are found nowhere else. It is not only a touristic destination; it is also a home and a work place to many people. The type of pollutants and environmental impacts that areproduced by recreation activities on marinas on such park depend very much on the amount of boats. Mytilus edulis has been widely used to monitor the biological effects of contamination by different ways, such as chemical analysis and biological responses. Themain goal of this project was to assess the status of three different marinas with high and low boat traffic and use the shell length of the blue mussel M. edulis as a potential bioindicator to detect effects from boating activities pressures. The main findings arising from this study are that the sizes of the mussels from the three areas with high boat traffic are significantly smaller than the area with little boat traffic. / <p>www.ima.kth.se</p>

Structural Integrity Analysis of Hydrofoil on a marine vessel

This study investigates the structural integrity of hydrofoils under three scenarios: regular boating, turning, and collision with an underwater obstacle. To analyse the forces acting on the hydrofoil, calculations were performed and simulations were conducted in SolidWorks using a CAD model of the hydrofoil.The simulations reveal that the weld between the struts and the wing undergoes plastic deformation during both regular boating and turning. This deformation is particularly problematic during turning, as the forces on the weld increase significantly. Under the collision scenario, the bolts at the breakpoint fail before critical damage occurs to the components above.The results highlight the weakness of the weld and the need for a redesign of the hydrofoil to eliminate it. An alternative fastening method, such as bolted joints with watertight sealing, should be considered.

TCM results are about three times that of CVM. Several limitations are noted, specifically that CVM solicits given willingness to pay (WTP for specific reservoir sites. TCM analyzes aggregated trips to reservoirs with a wide array of site characteristics.

Set-back distances to protect nesting and roosting seabirds off Vancouver Island from boat disturbance

In order to set guidelines that promote responsible wildlife viewing, I quantified the effects of boat-based disturbance to seabirds off Vancouver Island. Field trials recorded the approach distance at which roosting and nesting birds responded to either a motor boat or a kayak. Probability of agitation response was used to evaluate disturbance. At a distance of 40 m nesting Double-crested Cormorants, Pelagic Cormorants, Glaucous-winged Gulls, Pigeon Guillemots and Black Oystercatchers had less than an 8% chance of being agitated with either a kayak or motorboat approach. Roosting birds had longer response distances. Harlequin Ducks were particularly sensitive with a 25% probability of agitation at distances less than 50 m. Agitation distances were reduced by habituation to boat traffic. A set-back guideline of 50 m would protect most nest and roost sites in the study area while allowing viewers to appreciate seabirds. Some sensitive sites would require 70 m set-backs.

Evaluation of loggerhead sea turtle carapace properties and prototype biomimetic carapace fabrication

The research presented in this study has been conducted in an effort to aid in the creation of a biomimetic shell that may be employed in full-scale field experiments to determine the efficacy of mitigation options to limit loggerhead mortality in boat strike incidents. The objectives of this research include the development of experimental testing procedures for the material characterization of the loggerhead carapace, and the design, fabrication, and evaluation of an artificial prototype carapace. A photographic database of wounded sea turtles in Georgia was evaluated in order to determine the primary sources of loggerhead collision injuries and the most common regions of the carapace damaged in boat strike incidents. Skeg impact was found to be the most common source of injury, with a frequency of 44%. In addition, 74% of the sea turtles reviewed sustained injuries to the center third of their carapace length, indicating this region as the most probable impact location. Material testing procedures were developed for evaluating the material properties of the loggerhead carapace. This was followed by the material testing of three loggerhead shells for the purpose of determining localized mechanical properties. Samples were harvested from the shells in a manner designed to identify potential variations in properties due the location and orientation of the coupons within the carapace. Each coupon was subjected to axial tension or three-point bending. Specialized tabs were designed for tension testing in order to accommodate the coupon's irregular geometry and minimize curvature-induced moments. The tensile test results indicated that the longitudinal and transverse properties of the loggerhead carapace were similar. The tensile strength, elongation at failure, and modulus of elasticity were determined to have percent variations of 12.2%, 10.7%, and 10.1% respectively. In contrast, the three-point bending test results indicated that the modulus of rupture and flexural modulus for the transverse samples were approximately four times greater than those of the longitudinal samples. This variation may be attributed to regions of weak tissue running transversely through the carapace. The results of the material testing were utilized in the design of two prototype composite shells. The prototypes were successful in simulating the strain at failure and force per unit width to within 10% of the loggerhead carapace. The resulting procedure may be used to create artificial shells suitable for prototype scale tests in natural environments. In addition, the material testing methods developed for this investigation may offer insight into procedures for evaluating alternate forms of rigid or curved biological specimens.
