Tactility and the body experience

Chirakranont, Ada January 2010 (has links)
The ongoing project discusses how we as a society perceive and communicate through bodily experiences. The primary aim is to apply textile into a space and also to encourage people to use their senses when experiencing at design objects and spaces. The approach in this project is not meant to lead to a finish commercial product but rather to build up a spatial environment with textile materials and open up possibilities to use it. The challenge is for people to learn to let go of the stereotypes and think in an alternative way. This essay documents my journey from the starting point, describes the way I think and the process of work. This paper starts by giving the background to where it all began. Then it explores the tool I use to communicate, in this time is craft. There was a turning point during the experimental project I did which intended to apply textile to interior space. The upshot was how we as a society perceive and communicate through tactility. As time went by I learnt to narrow down my ideas and the work itself into one main consistent theme. As well as the work itself, the procedure is equally as important and was introduced into this essay. The forth chapter represents one illustration of how the concept can be applied. Finally is the summary of this journey. / 40,5 Högskolepoäng.

Finding meaning in out-of-body experiences : an interpretative phenomenological analysis

Wilde, David John January 2012 (has links)
History is replete with reports of anomalous experiences. The out-of-body experience (OBE), where the person's self and body are phenomenologically separate, is a relatively common anomalous experience, and has been a topic of scientific psychological research for over a century. OBEs have been reported to occur under a multiplicity of circumstances, however, research has mostly concentrated on OBEs occurring spontaneously, or arising under life-threatening scenarios. Much of this research has focused on either confirming the authenticity of the OBE or determining the underlying processes by which these phenomena may manifest themselves. This research agenda has been largely nomothetic in nature. Yet, traditionally, there exists a third strand of exploration - phenomenological research - which in recent times has been somewhat overlooked in this field of work. In an attempt to redress this shortcoming, I argue for the use of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as a method of qualitative investigation to address important fundamental research questions posed by the study of OBEs. The aim of this programme of work was to therefore to investigate the lived experience of having an OBE as it occurred in five different circumstances of occurrence, viz., during or near the point of sleep, during meditation, while consuming alcohol or drugs, while feeling physically or psychologically threatened, and as part of a near-death experience. A rationale for including these circumstances and discounting others is provided. To achieve this aim, five studies were conducted. Fifteen participants - three per study - were recruited to take part in recorded, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews. An IPA of the data identified four main clusters of themes across the five studies. One cluster concerned the potential for the OBE to be viewed as an adaptive experience; occurring at times of personal significance and helping individuals cope with difficult life events. A second cluster highlighted the benefits and challenges that experients encountered when sharing their OBEs with other people as part of their sense-making endeavours. A third cluster of themes centred on the embodied nature of the OBE and the attributions and beliefs experients had about the perceived control and mastery they had over their OBEs. Also identified in this theme was the transactive nature of the out-of-body environments themselves, which were seen as meaningful places that facilitated experients' embodied, goal-oriented behaviours. The fourth cluster focused on the abundance of rarely discussed OBE features and the corresponding attribution experients made of some kind of meaning to certain features, many of which were bound to previously held desires and beliefs, and tied in closely with their future anticipations and expectations. The theoretical implications for all of these findings are discussed. By examining in-depth the experience and meaning of these critical life events, IPA research findings can better furnish psychologists and health care professionals with information to further appreciate and understand their clients' OBEs. In turn this may help professionals deal with any potential personality transformations or psycho-spiritual crises that may arise in the wake of an OBE occurrence.

Obésité adolescente et expérience corporelle en EPS : entre agir et subir les contraintes normatives / Teenage obesity and physical experience in physical education : between acting and being subject to normative constraints

Lefevre, Lisa 15 February 2019 (has links)
We focus our research on the study of body experience for obese teenagers, in order to understand the engagement process when facing compulsory Physical Education situations. Scientific studies show a rather low level of physical activity among overweight adolescents. Analyzed in the light of existential anthropology (meaning « of people existing »), the strategies reviewed only describe the major reality mode, which meets school expectations. Fitting in the science of pragmatic theories (Quéré, 1997), experience sociology (Dubet, 1994) and existential anthropology (Piette, 2015), this thesis provides a new perspective by getting to grips with the body, space, time and relationship experience of four students, through the minor reality mode. The ethnographic study enabled the reconstruction of their body experience based on audiovisual data, non-participating observations and interviews with the students and their family and friends. Contrary to previous studies findings, our results highlight the richness of teenager body experience . The minor mode reveals remarkable body, space, time and relationship landmarks, which the student can use to stay engaged in situations, whilst breaking out of his/her unbearable constraints. The decommitment modes and the process of « reposité » lead to a better or different understanding of normative constraints conveyed in Physical Education. Overweight teenagers tend to « bodily translate » these norms by turning them into a choreographic score, based on the delicate balance between « doing » and « enduring ». Behind the incorporation of standards emerges the creative power of individuals in their existence.

”Your Body Just Goes Bananas”: Embodied Experience of Pregnancy / Kai "tavo kūnas tiesiog išprotėja": įkūnytas nėštumo patyrimas

Matulaitė, Agnė 20 February 2013 (has links)
Psychological research into women’s embodied experience in pregnancy and the first year after birth is contradictory and mainly quantitative in nature. In response to these inconsistencies and the paucity of qualitative research in this area, this study investigated the embodied experience of women during pregnancy and the postpartum year. The study was conducted in Lithuania and the UK, using semi-structured interviews and drawings; the data were analysed using the qualitative methodology of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Six women participated, all primigravidae, aged 26-35. Each woman was seen five times; thrice during pregnancy and twice after her baby was born. A rich description of the women’s embodied experience emerged from the accounts, supporting the notion of bodily experience in pregnancy being dynamic, complex and firmly embedded in their life-world. Due to limitations of size with regard to the PhD thesis, only the results of one consecutive case and four superordinate themes which emerged from the interviews with all of the women in the second trimester of pregnancy viz: the uncontrollable body, the body as my teacher, uncertainty about inner and outer boundaries and embodied identity in the making, were presented and discussed. The study provides insights into this lived experience that may be useful in psychological theory and in practice when working with women at this important transitional life stage.

Body Talk: Choreographic Revelations on a Dancer's Body Image and Experience / Choreographic Revelations on a Dancer's Body Image and Experience

Katzman, Laura Brooks, 1984- 06 1900 (has links)
xi, 81 p. : ill. / The purpose of my choreographic research is to challenge traditional tendencies in Western culture that objectify the dancing body and instead suggest different ways of understanding and seeing the body. My research strategized ways in which the choreographer might create opportunities to validate body image experiences of female dancers in a collaborative choreographic endeavor rooted in feminist pedagogy practices. Qualitative methodology included improvisation, journaling, and group discussions to enable the dancers to express themselves subjectively through words and movement. Insights from choreographers and scholars of feminist pedagogy in dance informed the collaborative creative process. Participants in this study identified validation of the personal body experience as a source of knowledge and utilization of the voice in dance as significant components leading towards empowerment and subjectivity for female dancers. / Committee in charge: Shannon Mockli, Chairperson; Dr. Jenifer Craig, Member; Rita Honka, Member

Body modification or body change is part of the circuit of piercings and tattoos, although they are socially less thinned and more extreme, like scarifications, subcutaneous implants, bifurcated tongues, surfaces and body suspensions. The aim of this paper is to cast an anthropological glance on these practices, joining at the same context all the subjects involved with these techniques, placing them inside the same relational focus and capturing their journeys and trajectories. The discussions are concentrated on the notion of body building and urban life style. Ideas as personal distinctness and prestige imitation are also present in this universe, as well as matters attached to genre, pleasure, art, and to the so-called alternative circuit . This way, the ethnography so far presented here, reveals the complex and contemporaneous character of these practices of body markings in which the body appears as the central element in the experiences of the subjects of this study / Diante da pesquisa de campo realizada com um grupo ligado ao universo da body modification, ? poss?vel perceber alguns usos e significados associados a essas formas de interven??es corporais. As contribuições de Seymour Fisher para os estudos em imagem corporal / The Seymour Fisher's contributions for the body image research

Ribeiro, Patricia Russo Leite 14 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Maria da Consolação Gomes Cunha Fernandes Tavares / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação Fisica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-14T18:38:17Z (GMT). / Abstract: Seymour Fisher, a north-American psychologist, was a researcher that during thirty years studied body image by a psychodynamic perspective. Either investigated themes like female sexuality, drugs, placebo and Freudian theory. With the exception of his "The female orgasm", anymore books was translated to Portuguese. It was verified through data bases that in the Brazilian Physical Education, there is no these neither dissertation that refers to Fisher's findings. This failure can cause the repetition of the same research that he had realized and the development of new research that will not consider his ideas. The aim of this dissertation was to systematize the Fisher's knowledge throughout bibliographical research. The following data bases were accessed: MedLine/PubMed, PsycInfo, Bireme, Scopus, Acervus, Dedalus, Athena e Google. It was found 17 books and 209 article published by Fisher e collaborators. Also, it was found other documents that brought information about his life and carrier. The reading of their body image publications could present the concepts that he developed concerning body perception and specifics cases of distortions in body perception, body boundary and its defense function, general body awareness that one have about he own body and assignment of meaning to specific body areas. Fisher studied the way the body image interferes in the human behavior and the way the behavior and the body experience shape the body image. He treated, specifically, the body perception, the body boundaries and the body awareness dimensions. Then he correlated these dimensions with the processes of adaptation, satisfaction/dissatisfaction with own body, body anxiety and defense mechanisms, in the same way that considered the role placed by the personality and the culture in the interface of this relationship. Thus, his intent was to detail the complex phenomenon that is the body experience. The present work brings relevant and important contributions for the Brazilian body image researchers. / Mestrado / Atividade Fisica Adaptada / Mestre em Educação Física

Le corps capacitaire en step : la construction de savoir-faire perceptifs au cours de l’expérience corporelle / The body capacity and step activity : the building of perceptive know-hows in body experience

Paintendre, Aline 28 November 2017 (has links)
This study, rooted in physical and sport education, contemplates the body development process of high school students who have started a learning sequence of step practising, within the framework of the CP5 – own competence n° 5. Starting from a holistic approach of the body, which is simultaneously living, experienced and described, the porosity between those three dimensions is deciphered for six high school students. The exploration paths of this thesis are articulated around an epistemological rooting in emersiology, where crossed scientific observations offer an opportunity at tackling the student’s body experience, so as to set up new educational and professional paths for the student to be aware of his/her own body. Several access paths, with self-confronting over a background of audiovisual traces in the first and third persons, and measuring the heart beatings via a cardio frequency-meter, contribute to defining the high school student’s capacity body. The nature of the knowledge built up and updated in the course of the classes speaks in favor of the sensitive perception’s acuity, as a complement to an intense practicing whose aim is to improve the aerobics capabilities. The different results illustrate the way in which the high school student’s esthesiological repertory increases his/her interoceptive cartography, by activation and sensitive awakening, while displaying as a consequence the building up of perceptive know-hows. By questioning two differentiating teaching paths through how his/her effort is felt, the high school students’ esthesiological and sensitive heterogeneity is revealed. While making it possible to singularly assess the living body’s capabilities through the high school student’s aerobics performance in step, these research works incite teachers to co-build an attentive listening attitude towards their bodies by the students, so that their trust in what they experiment is better and favorable to the development of their persons.

EXPERIÊNCIA DE QUASE MORTE: REVISÃO DE LITERATURA, ABORDAGENS TEÓRICAS E AVALIAÇÃO DAS INVESTIGAÇÕES / NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE: LITERATURE REVIEW, THEORETICAL APPROACHES, AND ASSESSMENT OF THE RESEARCHES

Faez, Bruno Angeli 01 April 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Near-death experiences (NDEs) are altered state of consciousness with mystic and transcendent content most commonly occurring in life-threatening situations. Explanatory hypotheses for near-death experience have ranged from brain dysfunctions and psychological reactions to mind-brain independence. The central issue is whether NDE can be fully explained by the brain activity or alternative mechanisms need to be considered. The present Master s Dissertation examines a literature review of NDE which concludes proposing that the mind-brain independence hypothesis is needed for the investigation of NDE given the experiential and physiological features of the phenomenon and speculative status of the available hypotheses.
