BOHEMIAN VOICE: CONTENTION, BROTHERHOOD AND JOURNALISM AMONG CZECH PEOPLE IN AMERICA, 1860-1910

Chroust, David Z. 2009 May 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines elite and popular consciousness among Czech speakers in America during their mass migration from Bohemia and Moravia, the two Habsburg crownlands that became the largest part of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. Between 1860 and 1910, their numbers increased tenfold to almost a quarter-million, as recorded in the United States census, and to over a half-million with their children. That was almost one-twelfth of their population in Bohemia and Moravia. In the same half-century, a stable group of men made Czech-language journalism and publishing in America. They included Karel Jon? in Wisconsin, Vclav ?najdr in Cleveland, Franti?ek Boleslav Zdr?bek and August Geringer in Chicago, and Jan Rosick in Omaha. Students of the first Czech-language secondary schools in Bohemia, they came to the 1860s American Midwest in their twenties and modernized a print culture launched by bricklayers and tailors. They also became leading voices in what the subtitle calls contention and brotherhood among their countrymen. Contention formed the three large camps, subcultures and allegiances?liberal/Freethinker, Catholic and Socialist. Brotherhood denotes the forms of association and security that made the fraternal benefit societies the largest and most durable platforms for Bohemian identity and advocacy in America. The dissertation uses Czech-American newspapers from the period, historiography and new archival sources from both sides of the Atlantic to more closely examine definitive episodes, personalities and institutions among Bohemians while they formed important urban and rural communities in American society from New York to the Great Plains.

První český učitelský ústav na jihu Čech. Učitelský ústav v Soběslavi v letech 1871 - 1948 / The first czech Teacher´s Institute in South-Bohemian. Teacher´s Institute in Soběslav in years 1871 - 1948

TRNÍKOVÁ, Věra January 2013 (has links)
Presented diploma thesis is based on the study of scientific literature concerning the topic of the work and on the source documents preserved in the State Regional Archives in Tábor. The objective of the work is to define the establishment and the functioning of the Teacher´s Institute in Soběslav, which was the oldest South-Bohemian school of its type providing education to the public interested in teaching at elementary schools in the Czech language. Pegagogium founded in 1871 in Tábor and moved into the picturesque town of Soběslav a year later provided, during seventy-seven years of its functioning, a quality education and the possibility to take the final school-leaving exam to more than four thousand of future teachers of elementary and council schools. Following pages deal with the characteristics of these people and also with the destinies of the most significant teachers, their educators and the school which provided them with the necessary knowledge. The work also presents information concerning the everyday life of the school, extracurricular activities and the relation of the school towards the host town during the changes in the Czech countries at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. The work aims not only to describe the history of the Teacher´s Institute but also to enrich the knowledge of the position of the South Bohemian schools in the whole-republic educational network and to specify the changes of the teacher´s education from the period of Maria Theresa?s reforms to the first half of the 20th century.

GÁLA, Jan January 2010 (has links)
Annotation The thesis describes the history of the Bohemian Forest and then of two villages, that don´t exist anymore and also the history of one another, that still exists, but its development after the Second World War was very affected by the postwar events and the communistic regime. Except the own books, there were another titles and archival sources in the State archive of Prachatice, that were used for the writing of this thesis. Very important for the inspiration and for another informations was the visit of the museum in Kvilda, where you cand find the exposure regarding the history of the communities Kvilda and Bučina. Very heplful were also the advices of the information centre in Stožec and mainly the trip to Nové Údolí, where are some interesting ambiguous information boards with authentic pictures in the place of the original village. The first part desribes the historical development of the Bohemian Forest. The following chapters put mind to the Second World War and the time of the communistic regime within the Bohemian Forest. The last parts are dedicated to the single villages. The thesis tries to show, that there are many villages in the Bohemian Forest, that don´t exist any more, but nobody should forget them, because they were a part of the history of the beautiful mountain and they don´t deserve, to be forgotten.
