Unga vuxnas åsikter kring bokomslags formgivning : En enkät- och fokusgruppsundersökning / Young adults’ perceptions of book cover designs : A questionnaire and focus group survey

Beillon, Nathalie, Runeby, Fanny January 2012 (has links)
The reader’s first encounter with a book is through its cover. Therefore it is important that the cover is appealing and sends out the right message. According to book publishers, young adults (individuals aged 16–27 years) are hard to reach because of a lack of knowledge about what attracts them and because of the group’s diversity. The objective of this study is to show what young adults are attracted by in book cover designs, using an extensive questionnaire survey and two focus groups investigating their perceptions. The results show that young adults argue that a book cover must relate to the potential reader and corresponds to the reader’s identity. The typography should be easy to read. Photographic images are preferred and should depict the contents of the book. Unsaturated colors appeal to the target group – red and black seem to be the most popular colors, while pink is not preferred. Special effects (like varnish and foil) should be used with caution.

Vizuální interpretace díla Karla Čapka R.U.R. (teoreticko-praktická práce) / Visual Interpretation of Karel Čapek's R. U. R. (Theoretical-practical work)

KRAUSOVÁ, Lucie January 2016 (has links)
Submitted Thesis consists of two parts theoretical and practical. The theoretical part aims at the chronological mapping and analyzing of all available Czech editions of Karel Čapek's play R.U.R. from 1920 until 1989. It also deals with design-transformations of Čapek's Robot on the examples of selected theatre plays in Czech lands as well as in foreign countries performances. The Thesis pays attention to stage executions on the basis of period photographs, drawings and reviews. It is created a united survey of this Čapek's play in the Czech lands in the given time period from its origins until its theatre realizations and book publications. The practical part of the Thesis will then extend the historical play book covers given in the theoretical part by creating an original author book based on Čapek's play, which will be the visual interpretation of the text. By that will be produced a continuity between the theoretical and the practical part of the Thesis.

Dialog literárního textu a obrazu / Dialog of the text and image

VESELÁ, Markéta January 2016 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the dialogue between two dissimilar forms of art: text and image, criss-crossing within one work of art. The point of interest is the exact moment of their encounter, which opens an interesting intermediary field for the litterateur as well, which I define and explore in the theory chapter. I aim to find possible tools for analysis, examine changes in perception, and the capacity of the semiotic base.

Hedlund af Schmidt, Kim, Zackrisson, Mimmi January 2024 (has links)
This study aims to map the individual competence of graphic designers in the social context within the creation of book covers. The ambition of this study is thus to increase understanding of the use of graphic design in strategic processes such as book campaigns. To investigate this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six active graphic designers and the data were then analyzed in a qualitative content analysis with the help of sensemaking theory and campaign theory. The analysis resulted in the categories experiences as interpretive frameworks, the social process as practice shaping, the function of the book cover, understanding of the book's context and visual elements. The study's conclusion is that the designers adapt their work role according to other actors within the campaign and it is thus the social process that shapes the graphic designers' understanding of their mission. The graphic designers also express that their experiences are considered a resource that can contribute to a functional book cover, but it appears that they do not always get the opportunity to share this understanding. The need to understand the target audience and the book's context thus seems to be based on the order of responsibility that places the graphic designer in a role where the only official responsibility is to create visual communication based on the wishes of the publisher, the marketing department and the author. In line with earlier research, the results from this study show that intuition is used as a helping hand for the creative and free choices they face in this work process.

(Česká) Fotografie v úpravě knižních obálek 60. let 20. století / (Czech) Photography in the design of book covers in the 1960´s

BOLKOVÁ, Petra January 2015 (has links)
Petra Bolková will be examining in her thesis the evolution of photography used on book covers in the 1960s; the period marked with certain political and cultural liberation. This study will attempt describing systematically in what ways certain artists and writers collaborated and what the difficulties of these collaborations were. It will also be examined how the author of a book and the artist delegated to design the book cover; the initial advertisement for a book, were influencing each other. What is more, the extent to which the graphic art reflects the content of the written word will be studied. Book covers became a covert space for experimenting with or even establishing new trends in the 1960s. Books covers became a new, independent fine art discipline which, essentially, was censored or criticized only occasionally. The goal of this thesis will also be gradually finding the numerous common grounds between photography, book typography and the final design, as photography and photomontage were used on book covers more frequently then classic original illustrations. Last but not least, this thesis will be looking at what emphasis was put on the visual side and how it was conditioned culturally or politically ect.

A study in design of covers for self help books concerning depression / En designstudie i formgivning av omslag för självhjälpsböcker om depression

Bossuyt, Liv, Wolter, Märta January 2016 (has links)

[en] A POSTCOLONIAL STUDY, USING SEMIOTICS, ON BRAZILIAN AND AMERICAN CLASSIC BOOK COVERS / [pt] UM ESTUDO PÓS-COLONIAL, COM O USO DA SEMIÓTICA, SOBRE CAPAS DE LIVROS CLÁSSICOS BRASILEIROS E ESTADUNIDENSES

MARIANA LUZ EIRAS QUEIROZ 11 February 2021 (has links)
[en] The control exercised by the countries of the Global North over the colonized nations is reflected in the cultural and ideological contexts of these societies. One of these reflections is found in classic book covers, which are the object of this research that intends to analyze how the Global North and Global South are represented in the graphic design of Brazilian and American classic book covers edited in Brazil and in the United States. To achieve this goal, a semiotic analysis of the expression plane and the content plane was performed on 304 book covers, based on the visual theory formulated by Jean-Marie Floch. Within the set of works analyzed, we sought to verify the existence of geopolitical elements in the graphic design of book covers and at what level the American symbols are reinforced in the covers edited in Brazil and how the Brazilian symbols appear in the covers edited in the United States. To this end, Edward Said s theory of Orientalism was used as the basis for this verification and it was observed that Brazilian titles, when published in the United States, are loaded with stereotypes created by the West, while American books, when published in Brazil, correctly reflect that country s culture.
