IMPACT OF HEAT TREATMENT AND OXIDATION OF C/C COMPOSITES ON MICROSTRUCTURE AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Iqbal, Sardar S. 01 December 2011 (has links)
Carbon-carbon (C/C) composites are notable among engineering materials in aerospace and defense industries possessing excellent specific mechanical, thermal, frictional and wear properties. C/C maintain their properties at temperatures where most of the high end alloys give in, and maintain their dimensional stability at temperatures above 2000 oC. C/C is frequently used in aircraft and automotive industries as brake materials. However, frictional performance is dependent on various parameters: microstructure, fiber type, fiber orientation distribution, fiber/matrix interfacial bond, heat treatment, and oxidation. The present study in dissertation provides an insight into the impact of heat treatment, and oxidation on microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties. The heat treatment (performed at 1800, 2100, 2400 oC in argon) of two-directional (2-D) pitch-fiber with charred resin carbon matrix, and three-directional (3-D) PAN-fiber with CVI carbon matrix influenced microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties. Microstructure characterized by polarized light microscopy (PLM), XRD, and Raman spectroscopy changed with increasing heat treatment temperature. The RL microstructure of 3-D C/C progressively highly organized, whereas ISO microstructure of 2-D C/C's charred resin hardly organized into an ordered structure as evident from Raman spectroscopy and Raman profiling of polished samples. Pitch-fiber organized more than the ISO microstructure of charred resin matrix. On the other, PAN-fiber became more ordered, but was organization was lower than pitch-fiber. Thermal conductivity increased for both (2-D, 3-D C/C) materials in comparison to non-heat treated (NHT) C/Cs. Thermal conductivity of oxidized samples decreased significantly than non-oxidized samples. In-plane thermal conductivity of 3-D C/C was much higher than that of 2-D C/C, and was attributed to the rough laminar (RL) microstructure of carbon matrix and continuous PAN-fiber when compared to the short pitch-fiber in isotropic (ISO) carbon matrix. Mechanical properties (tensile, compressive, shear) deteriorated with increasing heat treatment. However, statistical analysis using ANOVA showed that there was not any significant difference between the NHT and heat treated C/C materials in terms of mechanical strength, modulus, failure strain and fracture energy. The oxidized samples of heat treated (1800/2100/2400 oC) C/C materials (2-D, 3-D) showed an appreciable decrease in mechanical strength and modulus than non-oxidized samples, with progressively heat treated C/C becoming more oxidation resistant than NHT C/C. The study demonstrated a highly inhomogeneous nature of C/C, and sample size is a very important parameter in governing mechanical properties. Since, the slightest change in the dimension of samples could bring about a radically different outcome in terms of mechanical properties, and can hardly be representative of the bulk properties. Therefore, in order to obtain a good estimate of the bulk properties, the sample size must be comparable to the bulk material. The research nonetheless showed the impact of sample size in estimating the mechanical properties of bulk properties, which are highly significant after statistical analysis, and, therefore, it must be taken into account to understand the processing-structure-property-analysis relationships.

Návrh zkušebního zařízení nové generace pro dlouhodobé zkoušky univerzálního aktuátoru

STREJC, Jakub January 2017 (has links)
Actuators are a fundamental part of many modern devices and machines nowadays. Typically, they are responsible for operation of various machine parts, for instance correct performance of flaps and valves. Since actuators are an important device, it is crucial and beneficial to pursue development and testing of this component. This Master's thesis focusses on the selection and construction of a test bench used for long-term tests of a universal actuator (General Purpose Actuator), widely used in automobile industry. The main reason for assigning this practical task is the unsatisfactory current type of the test bench, which does not comply with the modern testing demands of the requesting company.

Matozo, Luciano Tedesco January 2012 (has links)
Automotive brake systems are very often susceptible to generate high frequency noise as a result of a self excited vibration. This phenomenon is generically nominated brake squeal noise and is the subject of many studies which intend to identify and describe its exciting mechanism and to propose counter measures to avoid its occurrence. One key subject yet to be explored about squeal noise generation is the relation between friction material properties and its occurrence propensity. This work presents the development of an adimentional number obtained by dimensional analysis (Buckingham theorem) capable to relate the squeal noise occurrence with four main properties from the friction composite: abrasive hardness, particle size and concentration and also its compressibility. Experimental results were obtained by testing six different friction material formulations, in which the concentration of abrasive or its hardness or its particle size was altered in order to explore the impact of these variables on the squeal noise occurrence. The noise generation was accessed by testing the friction materials molded to brake pads using a standard disc brake system in an inertial dynamometer under a specially developed test procedure. The obtained results validated the proposed adimentional number (excitation index 2) since was possible to establish a logarithmic equation (R²=0,9) relating it to the squeal noise occurrence verified on the conduced tests. It was also established a relation between the friction coefficient increase, as a function of the sliding speed reduction, with the increase on squeal noise occurrence. A brief investigation about the relevance of the contact stiffness to the vibroacustic behavior of the brake systems was developed, showing that higher values of this property can reduce the squeal noise generation.

CHARACTERIZATION AND TRIBOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE OF AUTOMOTIVE BRAKE PADS WITH DIFFERENT RAW MATERIALS

Mohamed Iqbal, Amir Asyraf 01 May 2017 (has links)
Over the years, numerous studies have been conducted for the development of alternative materials for better performance of brake pads. With a huge selection of materials, automobile manufacturers must prioritize the performance standards, safety, cost and environmental factors of the brake pads. To improve the friction performance of brake pads, maintain customers comfort level and environment safety, design engineers test and verify the best materials to satisfy the federal performance standards. Raw materials of brake pads compose of different categories such as organic, semi metallic and low-metallic. Besides the difference in composition, these materials affect the brake pads in terms of friction properties, wear rates and noise levels. It is crucial for engineers and manufacturers to improve friction stability while minimizing vibration by manipulating the composition of different raw materials and additive materials. Automotive brake pads normally consist of numerous metallic and composite materials that are formed by hot compression which can result in various mechanical properties [14]. This research proposes to investigate different composition of metallic raw materials and how their frictional performance is affected under different environmental testing standards. This research investigates the frictional performance of six types of raw materials with different mechanical properties and morphology using a universal mechanical tester (Bruker UMT). This paper examines the overall friction performance, coefficient of friction and creep groan behavior of six different raw materials under different humidity levels. By scrutinizing the static and kinetic coefficient of friction(COF) at different humidity levels, humidity-induced friction instability at low speed is studied and presented in this paper. After performing friction tests for each material, it was concluded that the friction performance and kinetic coefficient of friction of the brake pad samples were drastically affected by longer exposure to humid air.

Barros, Liu Yesukai de January 2018 (has links)
Previous studies have shown that the copper originated from the wear of automotive brake friction materials is the main source of the deposit of this metal in rivers and lakes, leading to environmental impacts. As a result, recent legislations from international governmental agencies have forced a drastic reduction of the copper used in friction materials in next years, which is likely to be followed by other governments in the world. Although the copper is widely used in friction materials, the understanding of the action mechanisms of this metal in friction materials is quite limited. This work aims to contribute to a better understanding of the role of copper in automotive brake pads in terms of friction and wear. Tests were carried out in the tribometer of the Laboratory of Tribology of UFRGS, where three kinds of brake pads (with 0%, 10% and 30% of copper each) were subjected to different temperatures (100 ºC, 200 ºC e 300 ºC). Methodologies to evaluate friction, wear of brake pads, wear of discs, morphological parameters of contact plateaus and deposit of film on disc surface were used. The sample without copper presented higher friction than the samples with copper for the three temperature levels. The material with 10% of copper presented higher friction sensibility due the sliding speed than other samples. Strong inverse correlation between wear of brake pads and wear of discs was observed. Quantity of contact plateaus was the parameter that presented the higher correlation with the friction in different temperatures. An abrupted variation of friction was observed in some experiments for samples without copper and with 10% of copper. At the same time, it was observed a disturbance of the film deposited on the disc surface, where the film was removed when the sudden increase of the friction occurs. However, this phenomenon occurred only at 100 °C, indicating that the variation of friction and the disturbance of film occurs only at low temperatures, and seems to be regardless of percentage of copper.

Franceschini, Joel January 2014 (has links)
In automotive brake systems, the main component that determines their performance is the friction material, because good friction material must ensure stability in friction under different conditions of use, as well as corrosion resistance, long life, low wear rate, good relation between cost and performance, and low noise. Since the comfort of vehicles has become important factor to indicate its quality, eliminate or reduce the noise and vibration of its components has become a competitive advantage in the automotive market, and the problem of noise in brake systems has been a cause of customer complaints in recent years. The brake noise is most often the result of a self-excited vibration induced friction or dynamic instability of the brake system. The stick-slip phenomenon is a typical example of oscillation induced by friction observed at low sliding speeds and generally results in vibrations which generate noise. In order to check the feasibility of using vibration measurements during the occurrence of the stick-slip phenomenon in the characterization of friction materials using a tribometer, were prepared six friction materials produced by the company Fras-le, manufacturer of friction materials for automotive brake. The tests were performed in the Laboratory of Tribology (Latrib) of the School of Engineering at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). In tribometer used for testing an accelerometer was installed on the support of the pad of friction material to be tested. Several tests were conducted, each under constant normal force and speed of rotation of the disk. The test results showed that the tribometer shows excellent performance for characterization of friction materials, enabling the development of new materials from tests performed on this equipment. The evaluation of the response of vibration acceleration obtained in the tests demonstrated that the response of vibration is dependent on various measured parameters, such as displacement, velocity and torque variation, and to better predict the propensity of a material to present vibration stickslip must take into account both the variation of torque and the maximum torque of each cycle of stick-slip. Furthermore, the use of accelerometer for assessing stick-slip tests was viable and its use should be encouraged in future work.

Frequency and time simulation of squeal instabilities. Application to the design of industrial automotive brakes.

Vermot des Roches, Guillaume 27 January 2011 (has links)
Brake squeal is a common noise problem encountered in the automotive industry. Higherfriction coefficients and weight reduction recently led to higher vibration levels in the audiblefrequency range. This quality issue becomes economic due to penalties imposed to the brakesupplier although no robust design method exists. The industrial practice thus relies on costlyprototyping and adjustment phases. The evolution of computational power allows computationof large mechanical assemblies, but non-linear time simulations generally remain out of reach. In this context, the thesis objective is to provide numerical tools for squeal resolution at earlydesign stages.Parameterized reduction methods are developed, using system real modes as Rayleigh-Ritzvectors, and allow very compact reduced models with exact real modes. The proposed ComponentMode Tuning method uses the components free/free modes as explicit degrees of freedom. This allows very quick sensitivity computation and reanalyzes of an assembly as function oflocal component-wise parameters. Non-linear time simulations are made possible through twoingredients. A modified non-linear implicit Newmark scheme and a fixed Jacobian are adaptedfor contact vibrations. The brake is reduced keeping a superelement with exact real modes anda local non-linear finite element model in the vicinity of the pad/disc interaction.A set of design tools is illustrated for a full industrial brake model. First, instant stabilitycomputations and complex mode trajectories are studied. Modal interactions and non-linearphenomena inside the limit cycles are thus well understood. Time/frequency correlations areperformed using transient modal identification and space-time decomposition. A time domainmodal damping model is also shown to be very useful. The modification of a critical componentfor squeal resolution is finally tested and validated.
