This thesis analyses the architecture of the fictional world created over the course of five seasons by the television series Breaking Bad (2008-2013), emphasizing: its setting, specially the ways through which its fictional counterpart of Albuquerque, the desert around it and the characters’ homes are constituted; and the ambivalent construction of its atmosphere and protagonists, which have a disposition to decay over the course of the series. To that end, we pay special attention to three dimensions related to the edifice of this world: the ways through which the work summons us to immerse into its world, the strategies employed in its arrangement, and the specific elements that furnish it. Here, we try to distance ourselves from the heuristic use with which the concept of fictional world has been met over the last few years, and we aim to operationalize important notions it brings in its core, such as incompleteness and frame of reference. Furthermore, the work examines not only how this world erects itself by its own merits, but also how it approaches certain intertextual references in doing so. Namely, we point out interfaces between the series and: the movies Paris, Texas (1984) and Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West, 1968); the realistic documental photographs of William Eggleston and Lee Friedlander; and consecrated genres such as the western, the bourgeois drama, and the melodrama. Moreover, this study conjugates semantic matters attached to fictional worlds, the pragmatic issue of how the work prompts our immersion, and formal syntactic aspects of television fictions, specifically style and seriality. As for the ways through which Breaking Bad invites us to immerse into its world, by its turn, we observe: a) the recourse to intense diegetic recapitulations, which allow us to remember considerable portions of the series’ braids; b) the long term construction of the elements that push the plot forward, like the Walt Whitman’s book that leads Hank to the discovery that his brother-in-law is a drug dealer; c) the creation of a temporal structure that, despite its many breaks in linearity, follows a continuous flow, given that it doesn’t partition the narrative in multiple chronologies, as do Lost (2004-2010) and Once Upon a Time (2011-); d) the investment in tridimensional protagonists, even if the secondary characters are not tridimensional themselves; and e) the bet in concentration of time, space, and action. At the end of this work, we argue that Breaking Bad builds a unique world, which cannot be reduced to a representation of our own, regardless of the fact that such world is not in the regime of the fantastic or the marvelous.

Directional Prediction of Stock Prices using Breaking News on Twitter

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Stock market news and investing tips are popular topics in Twitter. In this dissertation, first I utilize a 5-year financial news corpus comprising over 50,000 articles collected from the NASDAQ website matching the 30 stock symbols in Dow Jones Index (DJI) to train a directional stock price prediction system based on news content. Next, I proceed to show that information in articles indicated by breaking Tweet volumes leads to a statistically significant boost in the hourly directional prediction accuracies for the DJI stock prices mentioned in these articles. Secondly, I show that using document-level sentiment extraction does not yield a statistically significant boost in the directional predictive accuracies in the presence of other 1-gram keyword features. Thirdly I test the performance of the system on several time-frames and identify the 4 hour time-frame for both the price charts and for Tweet breakout detection as the best time-frame combination. Finally, I develop a set of price momentum based trade exit rules to cut losing trades early and to allow the winning trades run longer. I show that the Tweet volume breakout based trading system with the price momentum based exit rules not only improves the winning accuracy and the return on investment, but it also lowers the maximum drawdown and achieves the highest overall return over maximum drawdown. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Computer Science 2016

In this work we study the effect on the Quantum Phase Transition (QPT) of the integrable version of the Dicke model when we add a small (fixed) two boson interaction in the Rotating Wave Approximation (RWA). We show that, although the discontinuity of the Ground State (GS) energy derivative as a function of the principal parameter of interaction ('lambda') remains present for any value of spin (J), the entanglement between the spin and boson undergoes a significant change due the perturbation, specially in the limit of large values of J (N = 2J >> 1). This new behavior has been understood through the combined study of two quantities as a function of 'lambda' (interaction) and J (size of the spin): (i) the fixed point and its vicinity in the dynamics of the spin phase space o the model¿s classical analogue, and (ii) the behavior of the maxima of the spin Wigner function and its vicinity for the GS of the system / Mestrado / Física / Mestre em Física

In this work we solve the problem of classifying the possible symmetry breaking schemes based on simple finite groups that reproduce the degeneracies of the genetic code, thus contributing to the search for algebraic models that describe the evolution of the genetic code, initiated by Hornos & Hornos.

Quebra dinâmica de simetria, simetria BRST e finitude em modelos supersimétricos em (2+1)D / Dynamical symmetry breaking, BRST symmetry and finiteness of supersymmetric models in (2 + 1) D

Roberto Vinhaes Maluf Cavalcante 04 December 2012 (has links)
In this work we study three different aspects involving supersymmetry in the context of quantum field theory in $(2+1)$ space-time dimensions. We consider first the possibility of dynamical supersymmetry breaking in the Wess-Zumino model, calculating the effective potential up to two loops. We found that the vacuum state remains supersymmetric and the dynamical generation of mass together with the discrete symmetry breaking are not perturbatively consistent. Next, we turn our attention to the analysis of the Slavnov-Taylor identities in the noncommutative supersymmetric electrodynamics. The transversality of the vacuum polarization is verified explicitly in the one loop approximation with the conclusion that no anomaly is introduced by the noncommutativity or the regularization scheme adopted in the superfields formalism. Finally, the ultraviolet behavior for supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory minimally coupled to matter superfields is investigated. We verify that the model is superenormalizable and that the divergent terms persist only in the gauge superfield self-energy diagrams up to two-loop.

O dílaton em teorias quiver de hierarquia completa / The dilaton in full hierarchy quiver theories

Victor Manuel Peralta Cano 04 June 2012 (has links)
The standard model of particle physics successfuly describes the electroweak and strong interactions when compared with all the experimental data we have until now. However, it has problems regarding the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking as well as the hierarchy of fermion masses. The solutions of both these problems require the generation of large stable hierarchies. These can be obtained in a class of four-dimensional quiver theories called full-hierarchy quiver theories, which are related to extra dimensional theories in AdS, in the large-number-ofsites limit. We show that, just as in curved extra dimensional theories, there is a light degree of freedom associated with the breaking of scale invariance, which can be identied with a dilaton. Starting from an extra dimensional theory in an AdS5 background, we show how this light dilaton can be obtained in full-hierarchy quiver theories as well.

The role of "you" in the modulations of consensus between the coach and the learner. Intonation, gaze and hand gestures in a training session "commercial coaching"

Çela-Gontier, Edlira 25 November 2011 (has links)
The thesis presents the analysis of a training session of commercial coaching featuring a coach, corporate trainer and a learner, sales in the banking. The objective was to study the role of "you" associated with other indicators of address in the modulations of consensus between the coach and the learner. The results that our thesis leads : (1) In a dialogue, the enunciator-first speaker may be either in a state of consensus, either in a state of coenunciation breaking-off respect to the enunciator- second speaker, or in an intermediate phase (sometimes oriented towards consensus sometimes to break). (2) There are indicators of address gestural, intonation and morphosyntactic that distinguish each of the state. (3) The use of the pronoun "you" associated with other indicators of address does play an important role in the modulation of consensus between the coach and the learner. This role is particularly visible when one of enunciators-speakers or both are in an intermediate phase. (4) The enunciator-first speaker necessarily involves one of two intermediate phases and there are the reactions of the enunciator-second speaker to indicate the status of coenunciation (consensus or failure) at that moment of dialogue. Patterns generated by this research interest to several fields of sciences, including linguistics, science education, communication and training.

Wave impacts on rectangular structures

Md Noar, Nor January 2012 (has links)
There is a good deal of uncertainty and sensitivity in the results for wave impact. In a practical situation, many parameters such as the wave climate will not be known with any accuracy especially the frequency and severity of wave breaking. Even if the wave spectrum is known, this is usually recorded offshore, requiring same sort of (linear) transfer function to estimate the wave climate at the seawall. What is more, the higher spectral moments will generally be unknown. Wave breaking, according to linear wave theory, is known to depend on the wave spectrum, see Srokosz (1986) and Greenhow (1989). Not only is the wave climate unknown, but the aeration of the water will also be subject to uncertainty. This affects rather dramatically the speed of sound in the water/bubble mixture and hence the value of the acoustic pressure that acts as a maximum cutoff for pressure calculated by any incompressible model. The results are also highly sensitive to the angle of alignment of the wave front and seawall. Here we consider the worst case scenario of perfect alignment. Given the above, it seems sensible to exploit the simple pressure impulse model used in this thesis. Thus Cooker (1990) proposed using the pressure impulse P(x, y) that is the time integral of the pressure over the duration of the impact. This results in a simplified, but much more stable, model of wave impact on the coastal structures, and forms the basis of this thesis, as follows: Chapter 1 is an overview about this topic, a brief summary of the work which will follow and a summary of the contribution of this thesis. Chapter 2 gives a literature review of wave impact, theoretically and experimentally. The topics covered include total impulse, moment impulse and overtopping. A summary of the present state of the theory and Cooker’s model is also presented in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, we extend the work of Greenhow (2006). He studied the berm and ditch problems, see Chapter 3, and the missing block problem in Chapter 4, and solved the problems by using a basis function method. I solve these problems in nondimensionlised variables by using a hybrid collocation method in Chapter 3 and by using the same method as Greenhow (2006) in Chapter 4. The works are extended by calculating the total impulse and moment impulse, and the maximum pressure arising from the wave impact for each problem. These quantities will be very helpful from a practical point of view for engineers and designers of seawalls. The mathematical equations governing the fluid motion and its boundary conditions are presented. The deck problem together with the mathematical formulation and boundary conditions for the problem is presented in Chapters 5 and 6 by using a hybrid collocation method. For this case, the basis function method fails due to hyperbolic terms in these formulations growing exponentially. The formulations also include a secular term, not present in Cooker’s formulation. For Chapter 5, the wave hits the wall in a horizontal direction and for Chapter 6, the wave hits beneath the deck in a vertical direction. These problems are important for offshore structures where providing adequate freeboard for decks contributes very significantly to the cost of the structure. Chapter 7 looks at what happens when we have a vertical baffle. The mathematical formulation and the boundary conditions for four cases of baffles which have different positions are presented in this chapter. We use a basis function method to solve the mathematical formulation, and total impulse and moment impulse are investigated for each problem. These problems are not, perhaps, very relevant to coastal structures. However, they are pertinent to wave impacts in sloshing tanks where baffles are used to detune the natural tank frequencies away from environmental driving frequencies (e.g ship roll due to wave action) and to damp the oscillations by shedding vortices. They also provide useful information for the design of oscillating water column wave energy devices. Finally, conclusions from the research and recommendations for future work are presented in Chapter 8.

Conscience et physique quantique / Consciousness and quantum physics

Uzan, Pierre 07 January 2010 (has links)
This work aims to assess the contribution of quantum physics to the understanding of the phenomenon ofconsciousness. The "classical" models of consciousness cannat deal with two important questions: (a) thesynchronisation of distant parts of the brain which seems necessary to the construction of conscious percepts;(b) the question of the explanatory gap that exists between subjective experience, which is a private feeling, andthe description of its neurophysiological correlates in the language of science, at the third persan. The quantumalternatives of current models of consciousness are systematically exposed. Vitiello's and Freeman's "dissipativemadel of the brain" seem to corroborate experimental data and could thus contribute to solve question (a). Thismadel appeals to a fundamental property of quantum field theory according to which a spontaneous symmetrybreaking in a physical system (as it happens, the breaking of the rotational symmetry of dipolar molecules of thebrain) gives rise to a collective dynamics for this system. The models, relevant to the neutra! monism conception, that have been developed by Bohm and Hiley and, more recently, by Atmanspacher and by Primas use quantumtheory for its expressive power (concepts of complementarity and entanglement) to build a unifyingrepresentation of the phenomenon of consciousness. They lead to the dissolution of the question (b) of theexplanatory gap. ln the end, we suggest to extend this mode of representation and to apply it, more generally, tothe psychosomatic domain.

Symmetry breaking and Goldstone bosons in holographic strongly coupled field theories: Relativistic and non-relativistic examples

Marzolla, Andrea 29 September 2017 (has links)
In this thesis various holographic models are treated, which describe theories of fields where an internal symmetry is broken, either in relativistic contexts, or in case of violation of the Lorentz invariance. The first chapter opens with the revision of the notion of symmetry breaking in pure relativistic field theory. The case of spontaneous breaking and the Goldstone theorem are discussed, as well as the case of explicit breaking, where precise Ward identities between conserved current correlators and scalar operators loaded under such current are derived in a completely general way.We then consider two examples of non-relativistic field theories, which will be reproduced by holographic models: a model in which the invariance of boosts is broken by the presence of a chemical potential, and a model of Lifshitz's invariant theory. We show the non-relativistic realization of Ward's identities for the symmetry breaking. In the second chapter we briefly introduce the correspondence gravitation / gauge theory and we revise the central tool of this thesis, the holographic renormalization. In the third chapter, we show how to generate field theories with symmetry breaking by coupling a scalar field to a gauge field, and holographically deriving the Ward identities predicted by the field theory arguments, first in the Relativistic case. We also obtain an analytic expression for the scalar two-point function, where we know how to find the massless boson of Goldstone and the mass of linear mass in the explicit breaking parameter Of the Goldstone pseudo-boson, respectively in the purely spontaneous case and in the case of an explicit small break. We also consider the two-dimensional case on the edge, where we find that Coleman's theorem is eluded in the wide limit of $ N $, and Ward's identities are not affected. For non-relativistic cases, we first consider a non-abelian model in which the Lorentz invariance is broken: this situation makes it possible to observe so-called ~ B bosons which exhibit a quadratic dispersion relation and do not respect Not the law of a single Goldstone mode for each broken generator. Finally, we study in detail the holographic renormalization and the two-point functions for a conserved current and various scalar operators in a space-time of Lifshitz. We also find the Ward identities of symmetry breaking in their non-relativistic realization. / Doctorat en Sciences / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished
