The study encompasses only free-to-air channel broadcasters, commercial stations, televisions in analogical system and in VHS. In order to compare, contrast and analyse information, material was collected from three daily newspapers, nine interviews with agents involved in the direction of the TV stations and from legal documents related to the system used in the channel concessions, according to The Brazilian Telecommunication Code of Practice, since 1962. The study depicts and assesses the development of press and broadcasting in the second half of the 20th century in order to contextualize and question the course of television in the communication field in Paraná. The newspapers Gazeta do Povo, O Estado do Paraná and Folha de Londrina are used not only as a documental source but also as objects of analysis, because their editorial bears the subjectivity and interests of their owners, who, during the period between 1954 and 1985, became TV stations dealers. The process of setting up regional and national televisions is described historically, including technological progress, the consequences in the programmes and the movements of affiliations of the stations in Paraná. Finally, the hypothesis that guides this research is confirmed: there was direct... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

The effects of Western broadcasting on the Soviet people in Glasnost and Perestroika Period : The Case of Radio Free Europe/Radio LibertyKonovalova, Evgenija January 2012 (has links)
ii Abstract This research project explores the impact of Western broadcasting on the public opinion of the Soviet audience in the Perestroika and Glasnost periods. Specifically, it focuses on Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's (RFE/RL) contribution to changing attitudes of the Soviet public to the communist regime and ruling party, and constructing a positive image of Western democratic values during the relevant period of study. The theoretical approach to the investigation of RFE/RL broadcasting is based on media effects theories, particularly agenda-setting and framing theories. According to them, the media are not simply a conduit of information, but able to shape public opinion. By emphasising the salience of topics and particular aspects and characteristics of the issues, the media set public agenda and influence on people's perceptions about these issues. The study to assess RFE/RL's impact draws on audience research, quantitative and qualitative data analysis. It examines geographical reach and transmission frequencies of the Radio's broadcasts and analyses the content of the most featured programmes to explore how they framed the reality. The findings from the quantitative and qualitative analysis, as well as the audience research data, demonstrate that RFE/RL's programming set anticommunist agenda...

Protesting Sport : A Comparative Study of Media Representations of the London Olympics, Sochi Olympics and Brazil World Cup in AJE, BBCW and RTChiroiu, Luiza-Silvia January 2016 (has links)
Global sport competitions such as the Olympics and the World Cup were founded following universal principles of unity and peace and aiming to be celebrations of sportsmanship. Nowadays, however, they go beyond sport, being constructed as global media events in which both politics and media play an essential role. Caught in this triangle, the Olympics and the World Cup have re-emerged in the past years as sites of protests, after decades of relative calmness in this sense. This represents the point of entry into the analysis of global broadcasters, giving the chance to examine the way in which Al Jazeera English, BBC World News and Russia Today represent the protests they put in relation to sport competitions happening in different parts of the world. The chosen case studies are the London Olympics 2012, Sochi Olympics 2014 and Brazil World Cup 2014. The comparative analysis allows the drawing of similarities and differences between both the case studies and the broadcasters overall. The findings show that protests are dealt with differently according to the sport event they are related to, since some of them are legitimized and others are not. A major distinction, therefore, results in the manner in which the broadcasters use the protests in order to depict a certain version of the world. Global broadcasters offer, thus, multiple perspectives on the world as they carry what appears to be a heavy cultural baggage of the societies of origin.

Master of Journalism and Media Studies research report -
Faculty of Humanities / This research report forms part of current debates in media studies around
the rapidly increasing commercialization and privatization of public
broadcasters around the world. It investigates the impact of this
commercialization and privatization on the role of these broadcasters. It
looks at some impacts that the dependence of public broadcasters on
advertising has on their roles public service roles. South Africa is not
immune from these global trends that are mentioned above. As suggested by
the ICASA, the government reduced its funding of the public broadcaster
(SABC). This forced the SABC to rely more and more on income from
advertising and various forms of sponsorship in order to sustain and fulfill
its goals. This research provides an investigation and findings of the nature
and extent of the impact of advertising influence on both the SABC and to
some extent E-TV programming and programmes. This study is important
because it covers an important area since it looks at the rapid changes taking
place in the funding and the content of local television (South African
Television). It will make both a theoretical and empirical contribution to the
understanding of trends and developments that are taking place in South
African Television. It is comprised of three chapters with each treating its
own theme ranging from policy and literature analysis, news and drama
programme analysis and finally a case study, which provides an analysis of
first hand information from the SABC officials from both the programming
and the advertising department.
