The effect of a supreme court opinion outside the judicial system : an analysis of Brown v. Board of Education and the American South

This dissertation seeks to describe and explain the connection between The Supreme Court and politics outside of the judicial system. It is a case study of the reaction to the Brown v. Board of Education integration decision in the American South. I apply a theoretical model of “judicialization,” arguing that when courts affect politics outside of the judicial system, they reshape politics to resemble the adversarial legal system, sparking polarized conflict and causing non-judicial political actors to make arguments in the form of constitutional doctrine. Analyzing editorials and letters to the editor from Southern newspapers, I show that debate after Brown was characterized by appeals to constitutional principles, and that Brown increased the salience of segregation in schools as a subject of political debate. I also supplement my Southern newspaper data with data from African-American newspapers and analyze Southern elections in the periods immediately before and after the education integration decision to assess the impact of the Court’s education decision on both voters and candidates. / text

<p>Populationer av öring består av både migrerande och stationära individer, och det tycks vara både genetiska och miljömässiga faktorer som påverkar en individs beslut att vandra eller ej. Syftet med denna studie var att testa vilken effekt tillgång på föda har på tillväxt och smoltifieringsprocess hos öring (Salmo trutta). Min hypotes var att öring med hög tillförsel av mat växer bättre och smoltifieras därmed inte till samma grad som öring med låg tillförsel av mat. Som en konsekvens av skillnader i mattillgång förväntades att ATPas-aktiviteten, vilken indikerar smoltstatus, var lägre vid god tillförsel av mat än vid låg tillförsel. Experimentet utfördes från november 2003 till april 2004 vid fiskeodlingen i Brattfors, Värmland, där 2+ Klarälvsöringar utsattes för tre olika födonivåer, med fyra replikat av varje födonivå. Var 4-5 vecka fångades fisken för att vägas och mätas och slutligen togs biopsi på öringens gälar för en analys av Na+,K+ -ATPas aktivitet. I slutet av experimentet klassificerades fiskarna som parr eller smolt.</p><p>Parr hade en signifikant lägre Na+, K+ -ATPas aktivitet än smolt i de tre olika födonivåerna. Na+, K+ -ATPas aktiviteten visade dock ingen signifikant skillnad mellan födonivåerna. Parr hade ökat sin vikt och längd mest i samtliga födonivåer och störst skillnad var det i den lägsta födonivån, parr hade ökat i genomsnitt 17 g och 3,5 mm mer än smolt. Av de två högsta födonivåerna var andelen klassificerade som smolt 37 % och vid den lägsta födonivån var andelen smolt 76 %.</p> / <p>Populations of brown trout consist of both migratory and resident individuals, and it is likely that both genetic and environmental factors influence the decision to migrate. The purpose of this study was to test the effect of food availability on growth and the smolting process in brown trout (Salmo trutta). My hypothesis was that brown trout subjected to a high food supply grows better and smoltifies to a lesser degree than brown trout subjected to a low food supply. As a consequence of differences in food supply I expected that ATPase-activity, which indicates smoltification status, would be lower with a high food supply than with a low supply. The experiment was run from November 2003 until April 2004 in a fish hatchery in Brattfors, Värmland, where 2+ brown trout from the river Klarälven were exposed to three food levels, each replicated four times. Every 4-5 weeks the fish were weighed and measured and a biopsy was taken from the gills for analysis of Na+, K+ -ATPase activity at the end of the experiment. At the end of the experiment the fish were classified as parr or smolt.</p><p>Parr had a significantly lower Na+, K+ -ATPase activity than smolt for the three different food treatments. Na+, K+ -ATPase activity did not differ significantly between food levels. Parr grew faster (both weight and length) than smolt at all food levels, and the largest difference between parr and smolt was observed at the lowest food level, where parr increased on average 17 g and 3,5 mm more than smolt. At the two highest food levels the proportion classified as smolt was 37 % and at the lowest foodlevel the proportion of smolt was 76 %.</p>

Discovery and characterisation of ultra-cool dwarfs in large scale surveys

Ultracool dwarfs including the lowest mass stars and substellar dwarfs (or brown dwarfs) is a rapidly evolving and very active field. In this thesis I present the discovery and characterization of ultracool dwarfs and their binary systems with solar and subsolar abundances and try to answer a few scientific questions related to these ultracool objects. I use different techniques based on photometric and astrometric data of modern large scale surveys to identify ultracool dwarfs and their binaries. I identify around 1000 ultracool dwarfs from SDSS, 2MASS and UKIDSS surveys, including 82 L dwarfs and 129 L dwarf candidates (Chapter 2 and 4). This work largely increases the known number of ultracool dwarfs and aid the statistic study of these objects. Eighteen ultracool dwarfs in my sample are found to be in wide binary systems by common proper motion (Chapter 4 and 5). Wide binary systems are often used to test formation theories of low mass stars and brown dwarfs, which have different predictions of separations and binary fractions. One of these binary systems is the first L dwarf companion to a giant star eta Cancri. The eta Cancri B is clearly a useful benchmark object, with constrained distance, age, and metallicity. Further more, the L3.5 dwarf companion eta Cancri B is found to be a potential L4 + T4 binary. I focus on the studies of low mass stars and brown dwarfs with subsolar abundance referred as red and ultracool subdwarfs. They belong to the older Population II of the Galactic halo contain more information of the formation, early evolution and structure of the Milky Way. Using the most extensive optical survey, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), to select low mass stars with subsolar abundance, referred as red subdwarfs with spectral types of late K and M. I identify about 1800 M subdwarfs including 30 new &gt;M6 subdwarfs and five M ultra subdwarfs with very high gravity as well as 14 carbon enhanced red subdwarfs. I also identify 45 red subdwarf binary systems from my red subdwarf sample. Thirty of them are in wide binary systems identified by common proper motion. Fifteen binaries are partially resolved in SDSS and UKIDSS. I estimate the M subdwarf binary fraction. I fit the relationships of spectral types and absolute magnitudes of optical and near infrared bands for M and L subdwarfs. I also measure $UVW$ space velocities of the my M subdwarf sample (Chapter 5). Our studies of the lowest mass stars and brown dwarfs of the Galactic halo are limited by the lack of known objects. There are only seven L subdwarfs published in the literature. I search for ultracool subdwarfs by a combine use of the most extensive optical and near infrared surveys, the SDSS and the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey. I identify three new L subdwarfs with spectral types of sdL3, sdL7 and esdL6. I re-examine the spectral types and metal classes of all known L subdwarfs and propose to use 2.3 um CO line as an indicator of L subdwarfs. Two of my new L subdwarfs are found to be candidates of halo brown dwarfs (or substellar subdwarfs). I find four of these known ten L subdwarfs could be halo brown dwarfs. I propose a new name &quot;purple dwarf&quot; for lowest-mass stars and brown dwarfs with subsolar abundance (Chapter 3). Finally I summarize and discuss the thesis project in Chapter 6 and describe future research plans in Chapter 7.

Open, mobile and indeterminate forms

Since the early fifties “open form” has become a generic description for many different compositional concepts having in common musical outcomes which to a certain degree are indeterminate. The introduction looks into different meanings given to “form” in music and gives a historical survey of the origins of compositional indeterminacy. Next, the concept of “open form” is elaborated into a territory which is usually not associated with it: jazz. The introduction is followed by five case studies. Folio (1952-54) by Earle Brown is considered to contain the first intentionally “open form” works. It is driven by improvisational ideas, either at the compositional stage or at the interpretative stage. Brown's affinity with jazz also offers connections to other topics of the thesis. Miles Davis' Ife (1972) may at first seem like an odd inclusion in this study, but it is not. Its only oddity could be that of all the works discussed it has no score. But it is a composition; it is recognizable throughout its various incarnations and repeatable, and its outcome is indeterminate. Adam Rudolph did not conceive Ostinatos of Circularity as an “open form” work, but it is an indeterminate composition: it does have a score the musical result of which depends on the decisions made by the composer/conductor during the performance as well as the choices made by the performers. In Peter Zummo's Experimenting with Household Chemicals the performers play the same, often ambiguous, score, moving in the same direction at their own speed and discretion. The lack of synchronicity and the ambiguous notation result in a very elastic organic form. Anne La Berge refers to her recent works as “guided improvisations”. The scores mainly consist of suggestive text materials, software preset descriptions and rudimentary verbal indications, leaving major decisions to the performers. The last chapter is about my own work. It presents seven works (the scores of which can be found in the accompanying portfolio), composed between 2007 and 2011. Each of these works uses the score as a “field” through which the performers roam.

Observational properties of brown dwarfs : the low-mass end of the mass function

Brown dwarfs are objects with sub-stellar masses that are unable to sustain hydrogen burning, cooling down through out their lifetimes. This thesis presents two projects, the study of the IMF of the double cluster, h & χ Persei, and the determination of the dynamical masses of the brown dwarf binary, ε Indi Ba, Bb. The study of a cluster’s population distribution gives us the opportunity to study a statistically meaningful population of objects over a wide range of masses (from massive stars to brown dwarfs), with a similar age and chemical composition providing formation and dynamical evolution constraints. h & χ Persei is the largest double cluster known in our galaxy. Using optical and infrared photometric data we have produced the deepest mass function for the system. A study of the radial distribution shows evidence of mass segregation while the mass function shows that these clusters may be suffering from accelerated dynamical evolution due to their interaction, triggering the ejection of brown dwarfs. The physical parameterization of brown dwarfs is reliant on the use of interior and atmospheric models. The study of brown dwarf binaries can provide crucial model independent measurements, especially masses. ε Indi Ba, Bb (spectral types T1 and T6) is the closest known brown dwarf binary to Earth. The brown dwarf binary itself orbits a main sequence star allowing us to constrain the distance, metallicity and age of the system making it possible to break the sub-stellar mass-age-luminosity degeneracy. The relative motion of the brown dwarf binary has been studied with precision astrometry from infrared AO data, allowing the determination of the system mass, 121.16 ± 0.17 ± 1.08 MJup . The individual masses of the binary components were derived from the absolute movement of the binary to be MBa = 68.04±0.94 MJup and MBb = 53.12±0.32 MJup. We concluded that the isochronally-derived masses were underestimating the system mass by ∼ 60%, due to the likely underestimation of the age of the system. The evolutionary models are consistent with the parameters measured observationally if the system has an age ∼ 4 Gyr.

Genom medkänsla med oss själva och tillit till omvärlden, kan vi våga visa de sidorna och därmed bli modiga. Modiga fegisar som vågar erkänn att de är rädda. Beneficial Effects of Germinated Brown Rice on Cardiovascular Risk Factors in LDL Receptor Knockout Mice

Based on accumulating evidence, adequate intake of whole grains is associated with reduced cardiovascular disease CVD risk. Germinated brown rice (GBR) has been used in East Asian countries as an alternative grain. Preliminary studies suggest GBR has potential health benefits, including reducing CVD risk, but the mechanism remains unclear. The hypothesis of the project is that long-term consumption of GBR would reduce atherogenic risk factors in low-density lipoprotein receptor knockout (LDLr-KO) mice. To test the hypothesis, three groups of male LDLr-KO mice were fed with one of the following diets for 24 weeks: (a) commercial mouse chow, used as the control diet; (b) chow was replaced with 60% (w/w) Chinese white rice (CWR); and (c) chow was replaced with 60% (w/w) GBR. All diets were supplemented with 0.06% (w/w) dietary cholesterol to accelerate atherogenesis. Blood samples, hearts, livers and feces were collected and used for biochemical and histological analyses. The results demonstrated that no significant difference was detected in body weights, plasma or fecal lipid profiles and antioxidant enzyme activities among groups. However, GBR consumption significantly decreased atherosclerotic lesion (P = 0.003) in the aortic roots as compared with that in the CWR group, but there was no significant difference as compared with that in the control group (P = 0.4). In addition, GBR significantly decreased monocyte adhesion to the aorta in LDLr-KO mice as compared to that in the CWR group (P=0.0001), but not with the control group. These data suggested that GBR may be beneficial for the prevention of vascular inflammation and atherogenesis in LDLr-KO mice. Additional studies in animal models and humans may further investigate the mechanisms of the beneficial effects of GBR on vascular inflammation and atherogenesis. / May 2017

Följande uppsats kommer att fokusera på relationen mellan Quentin Tarantino och blaxploitation, och syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka huruvida Tarantino väljer att representera sina svarta kvinnliga huvudkaraktärer annorlunda i sina blaxploitation-influerade filmer Jackie Brown (1997) och Django Unchained (2012) i jämförelse med representationen av svarta kvinnliga huvudkaraktärer i två av de mest kända blaxploitationfilmerna från 1970-talet, Coffy (1973) och Foxy Brown (1974). Den grundläggande teorin för uppsatsen är den feministiska filmteorin, men andra texter som berör representationen av kvinnor och specifikt svarta kvinnor på film är lika väsentliga. Mitt tillvägagångssätt för att besvara uppsatsens frågeställningar är att genom närläsning av de utvalda filmerna samt deras respektive kvinnliga karaktärer, med understöd av relevant litteratur och teorier, göra en jämförande analys. Slutresultatet visar att Tarantino i och med filmen Jackie Brown lyckas utveckla den svarta och starka kvinnliga karaktären från blaxploitation dock utan att föra vidare undergenrens problematiska sexualisering av kvinnokroppen. Däremot lyckas han inte lika bra i samband med Django Unchained, där den kvinnliga, ofta hjälplösa, huvudkaraktären främst visas som antingen någonting vackert eller någon som plågas för andras njutning.

EXTRASOLAR STORMS: PRESSURE-DEPENDENT CHANGES IN LIGHT-CURVE PHASE IN BROWN DWARFS FROM SIMULTANEOUS HST AND SPITZER OBSERVATIONS

We present Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera Ch1 and Ch2 monitoring of six brown dwarfs during eight different epochs over the course of 20 months. For four brown dwarfs, we also obtained simulataneous Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/WFC3 G141 grism spectra during two epochs and derived light curves in five narrowband filters. Probing different pressure levels in the atmospheres, the multiwavelength light curves of our six targets all exhibit variations, and the shape of the light curves evolves over the timescale of a rotation period, ranging from 1.4 to 13 hr. We compare the shapes of the light curves and estimate the phase shifts between the light curves observed at different wavelengths by comparing the phase of the primary Fourier components. We use state-of-the-art atmosphere models to determine the flux contribution of different pressure layers to the observed flux in each filter. We find that the light curves that probe higher pressures are similar and in phase, but are offset and often different from the light curves that probe lower pressures. The phase differences between the two groups of light curves suggest that the modulations seen at lower and higher pressures may be introduced by different cloud layers.

Aims. Uncovering the ingredients and the architecture of planetary systems is a very active field of research that has fuelled many new theories on giant planet formation, migration, composition, and interaction with the circumstellar environment. We aim at discovering and studying new such systems, to further expand our knowledge of how low-mass companions form and evolve. Methods. We obtained high-contrast H-band images of the circumstellar environment of the F5V star HD 206893, known to host a debris disc never detected in scattered light. These observations are part of the SPHERE High Angular Resolution Debris Disc Survey (SHARDDS) using the InfraRed Dual-band Imager and Spectrograph (IRDIS) installed on VLT/SPHERE. Results. We report the detection of a source with a contrast of 3 : 6 x 10(-5) in the H-band, orbiting at a projected separation of 270 milliarcsec or 10 au, corresponding to a mass in the range 24 to 73 M-Jup for an age of the system in the range 0.2 to 2 Gyr. The detection was confirmed ten months later with VLT /NaCo, ruling out a background object with no proper motion. A faint extended emission compatible with the disc scattered light signal is also observed. Conclusions. The detection of a low-mass companion inside a massive debris disc makes this system an analog of other young planetary systems such as beta Pictoris, HR 8799 or HD 95086 and requires now further characterisation of both components to understand their interactions.
