Efeitos do tempo de escovação supervisionada por professores, sobre as condições gengivais de escolares com 10 anos de idade / Effects of teacher-supervised brushing time on the gingival conditions of 10-year-old schoolchildren

Antonio Galvao Fortuna Rosa 10 November 1978 (has links)
Epidemiological research during the last years, has shown that inflamatory changes in the marginal periodontium originate in early childhood. It has been shown that periodontal conditions are markedly influenced by oral hygiene. This investigation was performed on 127 school children aged 10. The patient\'s gingival condition was scored according to the criteria of a Gingival Index System proposed by LOE and SILNESS. The students were divided into three groups: two experimental groups and a control group. During the schoolterms, for three months, the experimental groups were divided into \"brushing units\" and brushed their teeth once daily under the supervision of trained teachers. Subjects in the control group received no attention fron the trained teachers. After three months of supervised toothbrushing the experimental groups El and E2 were paired and showed a reduction in Gingival Index scores of 50 per cent . The toothbrushing of the experimental group E1 was supervised during four more months and this lengthening of the training period resulted in a reduction of 68 per cent in the incidence of gingivitis.

Does Inclusion of a Disclaimer versus Warning Reduce the Effects of Exposure to Thin-Ideal Media Images on Body Dissatisfaction and Intent to Diet?

Ata, Rheanna Nichole 01 January 2012 (has links)
The relationship between exposure to media images of ultra-thin models and body dissatisfaction has been documented in numerous correlational and experimental studies. Given the association between body dissatisfaction and negative outcomes such as eating disorders, prevention and intervention programs have sought to minimize the effects of the media on body dissatisfaction by, for example, providing education on the air-brushing techniques used to enhance the thinness of models depicted in advertisements. More recent efforts in Britain and France include the proposal of legislation that would require advertisements featuring hyper-thin models to include a disclaimer. To determine whether the inclusion of a disclaimer versus a warning message would decrease the effects of exposure to such magazine advertisements on body dissatisfaction and intent to diet, female undergraduate students (N = 283) were randomly assigned to one of four groups: (1) disclaimer, (2) warning, (3) model control, (4) car control. Those in the experimental groups were exposed to advertisements edited to include either a disclaimer (i.e., "Retouched photograph aimed at changing a person's physical appearance.") or warning (i.e., "Warning: Trying to look as thin as this model may be dangerous to your health."); those in the model control group were exposed to the original, untouched advertisements, and those in the car control group viewed car advertisements. Results revealed a significant, but unexpected, effect of group on post-exposure body dissatisfaction. The car control group reported significantly lower post-exposure body dissatisfaction than the disclaimer, warning, and model control groups. The effects of exposure to magazine advertisements on intent to diet did not differ by group. Potential moderating roles of trait body dissatisfaction, physical appearance comparison, and internalization of the thin-ideal are examined. Implications, limitations, and future research ideas are discussed.

Epidemiological studies of dental caries in groups of Swedish children

Stecksén-Blicks, Christina January 1986 (has links)
In a cross-sectional study the extent and distribution of dental caries was studied in 817 children, 4, 8 and 13 years old in three areas inSweden. The importance of dietary habits, sugar intake, social conditions, professional dental care, oral hygiene and the use of fluorides on caries prevalence was analyzed. In a subsample, consisting of 88 8-year-olds and 91 13-year-olds the net caries increment during aone-year period was studied. In this longitudinal study, the salivary levels of lactobacllli and S. mutans were determined and correlated to sugar intake and caries increment. The cross-sectional study showed obvious differences in caries prevalence among the studied areas. These differences could mainly be explained by variations in the age from which children had received professional dental care, frequency of tooth-brushing and the use of topical fluorides. There were no differences in dietary habits or sugar intake that could explain the differences in caries prevalence among the areas studied. Examples are given of how changes in some determinants may affect the caries prevalence by means of path analysis. The longitudinal study showed that caries Increment was higher when sugar intake and meal frequency were high (&gt; the mean value for the age group). The highest mean caries increment was found in children with high prevalence of lactobacllli and S. mutans in the saliva combined with a high sugar intake. Groups of children with high salivary levels of both Iactobac ì II i and S. mutans developed 3-4 times more caries than other children. This relation did not always exist in the Individual case. Children with a low caries Increment during one year (0-2 surfaces) brushed their teeth more often and rinsed their mouths more frequently with fluoride solution than children with a high caries increment (&gt; 3 surfaces). The use of fluoridated toothpaste was somewhat more common, however, in the low carles increment group only in the.8-year-oIds. The gingival status was used as a measure of oral hygiene and gingivitis scores revealed statistically significant differences between groups with a low caries increment and a high carles increment (p &lt; 0.01, p &lt; 0.05) in the two age groups, respectively. With the variables frequency of meals, total sugar intake, salivary level of lactobacilli and S. mutans, oral hygiene and use of topical fluorides the net caries increment during one year could be correctly predicted in 79 % of the 8-year-olds and 81 % of the 13-year-olds when the children were divided Into two groups according to their net caries increment; 0-2 surfaces and &gt; 3 surfaces. / <p>S. 1-43: sammanfattning, s. 45-116: 5 uppsatser</p> / digitalisering@umu

Efeito da escovação na resistência à corrosão do titânio cp / The effect ofd brushingand corrosion on cp titanium

The use of metal alloys in dentistry continues to have application in many clinical situations of conventional prosthesis and implants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of brushing and corrosion on the cp Ti surface. Specimens were prepared with 15.0 mm diameter and 2.5 mm thickness, obtained by the method of lost wax casting. Then divided into 4 groups (n=6). Electrochemical tests and mechanical brushing (abrasion) were performed. For the analysis of Open Circuit Potential (OCP), the measurement period was 1 hour, with the potential of sample reading every 0.6 seconds. For Group G1 Pontecial Open Circuit (OCP) analysis was performed, then applying a Anode potential at -250 mV for 1 hour and soon after, performed the Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) at -250mV. For the Group G2 OCP analysis was performed, then applying a Cathodic Potential at +1000 mV for 1 hour and soon after, performed the EIS at +1000 mV. The Groups G1 and G2 were not subjected to mechanical brushing test. The Group G3was submitted, first, the mechanical brushing, and the machine was thrown up to 14,600 cycles, which represents 1 year of brushing for a healthy individual [52] and corresponds to 41 minutes of operation of the equipment. Subsequently, the same sequence of G1 Group corrosive test was performed (OCP + Potential Application of anodic at - 250mV + EIS at -250 mV). For the group G4, first mechanical brushing (14,600 cycles) was performed. Then was performed the same sequence of Group G2 corrosive test, (OCP + Application of Cathodic Potential at +1000 mV + EIS at +1000 mV). The results showed no statistical significance change of surface roughness between the tested groups. However, the images obtained through the 3D Digital interferometry and scanning electron microscopy tests , suggest the formation of surfaces with less irregularities, for groups 3 and 4, which were subjected to mechanical brushing before the electrochemical tests. The oxide resistance values (Róxido) observed after the EIS at -250 mV (groups 1 and 3) and at +1000 mV (groups 2 and 4) were statistically different ( p &le; 0.05 ), and the groups 1 and 2 ,subjected only to the electrochemical test showed less oxide resistance when compared with groups 3 and 4, mechanically brushed before the electrochemical testing. It was concluded that brushing positively interferes at the corrosion resistance of cp Ti.

Influência de bebidas e escovação nas propriedades físicas de uma resina composta / Influence of beverages and brushing on the physical properties of a composite resin

Cesar Penazzo Lepri 23 January 2009 (has links)
Objective: This study evaluated the influence of beverages and brushing on the color change, surface roughness and microhardness in depth of a composite resin. Methods: 120 composite resin disks (10mm-øX2mm-thickness; Filtek-Z250) were prepared and polished after 24h. Initials color and surface roughness were measured and specimens were randomly assigned into four groups (red wine, soft drink, sugar cane spirit, or artificial saliva control) and three subgroups (without brushing; brushing with Colgate, or brushing with Close Up Xtra Whitening). Specimens were immersed in the beverage 5x/day, for 5 minutes, over 30 days, being two subgroups brushed at the end of every day (120 moving/day). Color was measured at the 15th and 30th days of immersion; final surface roughness was measured at the 30th day. After the immersion period, specimens were stored in artificial saliva for 7 days, when their surfaces were repolished and immediately assessed by color. Color change was measured with a spectrocolorimeter and analyzed by &Delta;E, &Delta;L, &Delta;a, and &Delta;b values. The values of roughness (Ra - &mu;m) were measured with a rugosimeter. As regard microhardness, the specimens were firstly included in polyester resin and sectioned in the transverse direction. After polishing these surfaces, measurements were realized at depths of 30&mu;m, 60&mu;m, 90&mu;m, 120&mu;m and 250&mu;m, employing the parameters 25gf/40s of microhardness Knoop. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Fisher\'s tests (&alpha;=5%). Results: Color change values were statistically different after immersion in the beverages; red wine promoted the highest alteration, followed by soft drink and sugar cane spirit, which presented similar results among them and different from saliva. No difference was observed with or without brushing independently of the toothpaste used. At 30th day, specimens exhibited a color change higher than 15th day; after repolishing, the color of the specimens was similar to 15th day. Beverages and brushing negatively influenced the surface roughness. In relation to microhardness, there was no significant difference among groups, regardless of the depth examined. Conclusions: Color change of the composite resin was influenced only by the beverages and brushing did not affect the analyzed property. The repolishing was not sufficient to promote the return of the specimens color to their initial values. The surface roughness was negatively influenced both by the beverage as brushing. For microhardness, the composite resin showed similar results regardless of the beverages used and the presence or absence of brushing in the specimens tested.

INTERVENTIONS TO REDUCE MICROBIAL LOAD OF FOODBORNE PATHOGENS AT THE SURFACE OF FRESH PRODUCE

Yezhi Fu (7036865) 12 October 2021 (has links)
<div>Fresh produce has been the leading source of foodborne illness outbreaks in the US, surpassing typical pathogen carriers such as meat, dairy, and seafood. Among the fresh produce popular to the consumers, cantaloupe and sprouts are mostly susceptible to pathogen contaminations and outbreaks. However, it has been a challenge to address the key factor in the contamination - the biofilms formed by pathogens are highly resistant to conventional washing and cleaning procedures. For cantaloupe, the net-like and porous surface forms a barrier for washing. For sprouts, the fragile texture of seedlings prevents aggressive cleaning operation and biofilm removal.</div><div><br></div><div>In this study, innovative interventions were developed to improve microbial safety of fresh produce, using cantaloupe and alfalfa sprouts as models. For cantaloupe, abrasive brushing was designed to remove pathogen biofilm from cantaloupe. Our research found pathogens could form biofilm at cantaloupe rind surface as the residence time of pathogens increased. Biofilm formed on cantaloupe rind was imaged by cryo-scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM), and its resistance to sodium hypochlorite and lauroyl arginate ethyl (LAE) was confirmed. Furthermore, abrasive brushing with peroxyacetic acid (PAA) could effectively remove biofilm formed at cantaloupe rind. The efficacy of this novel cleaning technique was highly desirable, which could achieve 3 log reduction in pathogen population. Mechanism of abrasive brushing to remove biofilm at cantaloupe rind surface was also proposed. Conceivably, brushing with diatomaceous earth (DE) and PAA could be an innovative and cost-effective method to remove pathogen biofilm from cantaloupe rind.</div><div><br></div><div>For alfalfa sprouts, since most of the outbreaks are linked to the sprouting seeds, seed disinfection treatments are considered to be the most effective method to improve microbial safety of sprouts. In this study, a newly developed alginate-based, antimicrobial seed coating treatment was evaluated for its efficacy to reduce foodborne pathogens from alfalfa seeds and sprouts. The calcium alginate coating in the presence of 2.5% lactic acid (CA-LA coating) reduced foodborne pathogens inoculated on alfalfa seeds to an undetectable level on day 1 during 28 day-seed storage, while chlorine (20,000 ppm) or lactic acid (2.5%) treatment took longer time to reach the same level. With sprouts, CA-LA coating resulted in > 2.5 log reduction for pathogen cells. In contrast, log reduction was < 0.6 for either chlorine (20,000 ppm) or lactic acid (2.5%) treatment. In general, this study indicated the effect of calcium alginate coating on reducing bacterial load of alfalfa seeds and sprouts, however, the germination rate of treated seeds was compromised due to the addition of lactic acid in the seed coating. Further study is needed to select antimicrobial compounds with minimum impact on germination rate of seeds.</div><div><br></div>

Estudo comparativo do efeito de solução de NaF a 0,5%, através de bochecho, escovação e ambos na prevenção da cárie dental / Comparative study of the effect of NaF solution to 0.5%, by rinsing, brushing, and both the prevention of dental caries

Fernandez, Roberto Augusto Castellanos 21 December 1979 (has links)
A study has been accomplished to make a comparison of the anti cariogenic effect of a solution of sodium fluoride, in the concentration of 0,5 per cent , applied weekly and under supervision, as mouthwash and toothbrushing used independently or in combination, during 10 school months, on 424 children of 9 and 10 years of age from five public schools of São Paulo, Brazil. Efeito da escovação e do envelhecimento artificial acelerado sobre a alteração superficial de materiais restauradores estéticos / Effect of simulated toothbrushing and accelerated artificial aging on surface degradation of aesthetic restorative materials

Roselino, Lourenço de Moraes Rego 11 April 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of simulated toothbrushing and accelerated artificial aging (AAA) on color stability and surface roughness of nanofill (Z350 - 3M ESPE) and hybrid (Tetric N-Ceram - Ivoclar Vivadent) composites. Twenty-four diskshaped specimens (12mm in diameter X 2 mm thick) were made for each composite and one feldspatic ceramic (IPS e.max Ceram - Ivoclar Vivadent) as a control. The specimens were polished with decreasing abrasiveness sandpapers (composites = 600, 1200, 2000 and ceramic = 100, 320, 1200, 2000). Then, initial readings were taken on color (Spectrophotometer PCB 6807) and surface roughness (Rugosimeter Surfcorder SE 1700 - Kosakalab). The samples were separated in 3 groups (n=8) according to the submitted treatments: Group 1: AAA; Group 2: mechanical brushing with dentifrice RDA* 68 (Colgate); and Group 3: mechanical brushing with dentifrice RDA* 180 (Colgate Total Plus Whitening). New readings on color and surface roughness were taken after 480 hours of AAA and in intervals of 41 minutes of brushing (=14.600 cycles) until 205 minutes. The samples initially submitted to AAA (n=4) received mechanical brushing with dentifrice RDA* 68 and 180, according to previously described methodology and new readings on color and roughness were taken. Data (before and after tests) were statistically analyzed (2- way ANOVA repeated measures, Bonferroni, p<0,05) and it was observed a higher composite color alteration compared with mechanical brushing when submitted to AAA with a statistically significant difference (p<0,05) between them. There was no statistically significant difference (p>0,05) on color stability of materials when the dentifrices abrasiveness were compared, but it was significant for surface roughness degradation (p<0,05), higher when materials were brushed with RDA* 180. Regarding time brushing, there was no statistically significant difference (p>0,05) for color alteration and roughness surface of materials and the same occurred for samples brushed after AAA. It was concluded that AAA interferes on color stability and the simulated brushing on surface roughness degradation of composites regardless the time of used dentifrice, but it was higher for more abrasive dentifrices. Moreover, abrasiveness and time of used dentifrice do not alter the capacity of staining removal and the surface roughness of composites.
