Welcome to Boomland

Gaustad, Cebrun Abe 01 August 2010 (has links)
Abe Gaustad's first collection of stories, Welcome to Boomland, explores the lives of disparate characters longing for some escape. Whether a paraplegic blues aficionado or a boy who finds a strange object in the woods, they are each searching for a way out of their stagnation. Yet each character is trapped by their own unique circumstance: some of them by their mistakes, some by ruthless dictators, some by the very notion of death. As they search for their freedom, they find out new things about themselves and manage to wage quiet rebellions against those that would control them. In the end, they earn small victories, but noble ones.

Tow, Texas : when the water recedes

Barer, David Edward 13 December 2013 (has links)
As a town reliant on the waters of northern Lake Buchanan, Tow, Texas has been devastated by the state's ongoing drought, which began in 2008. For six years the water has been low. For the past two years, the lake has vanished. Tow locals say the problems stem from both poor water management and natural disaster. Water authorities contend the lakes are functioning properly, that the water has dwindled due to the large number of water users and the harsh and unpredictable Texas climate. Regardless of the cause, the lack of water in Tow has ruined a beautiful lake, destroyed individual livelihoods and crippled a small town's economy. This is the story of several Tow locals' struggle to stay afloat through a drought that could soon become the drought of record. / text

Ensaios sobre a mainline economics e a história do pensamento econômico liberal / Hayek and the theory of institutions

Angeli, Eduardo, 1981- 20 April 2007 (has links)
Orientador: David Dequech Filho / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Economia / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-20T22:45:24Z (GMT). This dissertation is composed by four essays. Its purpose is to improve the comprehension about the mainline economics and to make it closer to some current discussions in economics. In order to achieve such goals, this dissertation presents the mainline economics, an intellectual project that can be found through the history of economic thought. Usually, the mainline economics does not use the conceptualization of equilibrium, at least not in the same sense of conventional economic theory. In this dissertation, there is an explanation of the reason for mainline economics can be heterodox and robust. It is also argued that a critique of orthodox economics should not be taken as a necessary critique of capitalism nor liberalism. Since economists who can be associated to the mainline economics are usually in the history of economics and they are not associated with economic orthodoxy, it is argued that both the history of economic thought and methodological pluralism in economics can be useful for the economic scientific community. In this context, two arguments related to the Austrian School of Economics are here developed: the place of entrepreneur in Kirzner's approach to the market process as an analogy to what is seen in the history of economic thought, and Hayek's arguments for liberty as a defense of freedom of research and the existence of methodological pluralism. It is argued that, under the Austrian point of view, history of economic thought and methodological pluralism might be more appreciated by economists. Afterwards, two connections between mainline economics and current discussions in Economics are proposed. Firstly, the role played by individualism in the economic thought is introduced and an interpretation that is different from the one held by orthodox economics. This reading is introduced by J. M. Buchanan's perspective. He is a mainline economist who has interesting explanations for the role of individualism in Economics. Secondly, Hayek's institutional thought is presented, in order to be compared to some institutional approaches that have been spreading through the social sciences in the last decades. The relation between Hayek's institutionalism, his liberalism and his interpretation of the role played by institutions over individual behavior and social performance is discussed as well / Doutorado / Teoria Economica / Doutor em Ciências Econômicas

Robert Buchanan and the fleshly controversy : a reconsideration

Murray, Christopher David January 1970 (has links)
The importance of Robert Buchanan's onslaught upon Dante Gabriel Rossetti's Poems in 1871-2 has never been minimised by the poet's biographers. This crucial episode undoubtedly contributed to Rossetti's death ten years later. Buchanan's criticism also raises the question of the poetry's "fleshliness", with which all Rossetti students eventually have to come to terms. Some critics consider him to be a romantic, trying to express his apprehension of the eternal to be found behind natural phenomena; others see him, as Buchanan saw him, as a man vainly trying to etherealise man's basest drives, a sensual materialist masquerading as a spiritual idealist. Buchanan's indictment has been said to be clearly representative of "the 'classical' or conservative school of criticism." Swinburne's Poems and Ballads, published in 1866, had shocked many. It was widely known that Rossetti had been one of the major influences upon the younger poet, and Buchanan expressed the outrage many felt at the immorality of the more mature, and thus more reprehensible, Rossetti. Buchanan's manner and tone were adopted to impress readers with his judicious impartiality, even though personal animus certainly inspired his criticism. Buchanan despised Rossetti's effeminacy, his lack of sanity, his lack of humanity, even; he despised his introspection, his effete luxuriation "in his own exquisite emotions." While such objections are virtually the same as those made against Keats, Buchanan did subscribe to the romantic belief that the sincere expression of some clearly perceived truth gave poetry its distinguishing characteristic of "spiritualization." To him, Rossetti's insincerity was the most patently obvious thing about his work. Thus it can be seen that Buchanan used both classical and romantic criteria to achieve his purpose. Buchanan, on the one hand, and Swinburne and William Michael Rossetti, on the other, had been exchanging polemical broadsides for at least five years prior to 1871. The thesis traces the origins and the course of the controversy, and presents salvoes by both Buchanan and Swinburne which have hitherto gone unnoted. Rossetti had not figured in the controversy before, but it was Buchanan's harsh review of William Michael's edition of Shelley that prompted the poet to organize the critical reception of Poems in the first months of 1870. This fact, until recently, has received scant attention in other accounts of the controversy, but this "working the oracle", besides giving Buchanan another stick with which to beat Rossetti, must have made the anticipated attack all the more deadly when it finally came. The continuation of the controversy after Rossetti's breakdown in June 1872 is described, as is the reluctant involvement in it of Walt Whitman, a poet whom both sides admired greatly. To assess what validity that attack may have had for Rossetti, a close textual collation has been made between the "fifth" edition of Poems, that reviewed by Buchanan in the Contemporary Review of October 1871, and subsequent republications of the poetry. It is clear that Rossetti did revise several poems because of the views that Buchanan represented. The omission of the sonnet "Nuptial Sleep" from subsequent collections has long been known to be directly attributable to Buchanan's attack. The thesis ends with a brief account of Buchanan's literary career from 1871 until his death in 1901. A confirmed mutineer and controversialist, he gradually lost credit as a poet worthy of serious consideration, and now his work has found a neglect that it may not totally deserve. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of mine spoil derived from the Wise Formation, Buchanan County, Virginia

Howard, Jeffrey Lynn January 1979 (has links)
Physical disintegration of the rocks is promoted by the closely spaced blast-hole grid used in the mining operation. Wet-dryfreeze-thaw forces are effective in causing disarticulation of the weakened rocks in 6 months or less. The silty spoils cause excessive dust, are crusted and support ponds. Application of organic amendments promotes infiltration. Some of the spoils contain enough salts to seriously retard growth of non-tolerant plant species. Exchangeable bases are overestimated, but the salts are a nutrient source. K is low, but adsorption isotherms indicate that, unlike the naturally occurring soils of the locality, there is no serious problem of K-fixation in the spoils. NaHCO₃ gives the most accurate measure of spoil P. A response to fertilization is likely. Adsorption isotherms suggest a problem with P-fixation by the goethite rocks. There was no measurable pedogenic activity in the spoils after two years of weathering other than physical disintegration of rock fragments and weakly developed structure in some spoil surface layers. There was no evidence of leaching of salts during this period. When regrading the spoils on the benches, maintenance of adequate drainage is essential to prevent nutrient depletion, Fe-generated toxicity and acidity and toxic accumulations of salts. A mixture of 70% sandstone, 20% siltstone and 10% shale should yield a well-drained sandy loam spoil upon weathering. The ferruginous and silty rocks should be regraded well below the surface. / Master of Science

Jazz Babies, a Femme Fatale, and a Joad: Women and the Automobile in the American Modernist Era

Bremmer, Jessica 12 June 2006 (has links)
The 1920’s and 30’s saw the advent of the automotive era in America as Henry Ford’s vision of production and technological progress was fully realized. But the pleasure of automobility was initially afforded to a select few, and so the automobile revealed a growing chasm between social classes. Additionally, the automobile contributed to a transformation of the social ideology of gender as more and more women spent time in cars as passengers and as drivers. And while some viewed this ideological shift as a welcome change, many Americans worried about the negative implications of women in cars. Representations of automobiles in American literature reveal this juxtaposition between positive and negative reactions, and this thesis explores the cultural impetus behind this duality, as well as the manifestations of this duality in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, James M. Cain’s Double Indemnity, and John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.

Michael Novak a Patrick Buchanan jako významní představitelé současného amerického politického katolicismu / Michel Novak and Patrick Buchanan as Major Representatives of Contemporary American Political Catholicism

Míčka, Roman January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation Michael Novak and Patrick Buchanan as Major Representatives of Contemporary American Political Catholicism compares the political thought of two faces of contemporary American political Catholicism represented by the neoconservative Michael Novak and the paleoconservative Patrick J. Buchanan. The first part deals with the context of contemporary political Catholicism and its historical background. The comparison thematizes five problem fields: the issue of democracy and American political system, economic problems, question of foreign policy, the issue of religion and Catholicism and, finally, the conflict over the basis of conservatism. To accomplish the given objective, I analyse the work of both authors, compare their respective ideological positions and set them in the context of other major authors in the given areas and in the context of established political theories. The comparison shows that they both emphasize the significance of the religious and moral aspect of democracy, especially in the American context, however, they do not agree on the universal reach of democratic ideals. In the field of economics, they stand for different views: Novak is an economic neoliberal, while Buchanan a radical economic nationalist. Similarly in relation to foreign policy, Novak...
