Sources of authority and effectiveness thereof for project managers at a South African automotive manufacturer

Kruger, W. E.(Wessel Edward) 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2006. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research is a mini-study project that involves a Iiterature study of secondary sources as well as a questionnaire distributed within Nissan South Africa (NSA) to obtain primary data. A natural outflow from the matrix structure applied at NSA is the lack of positional authority for project managers to request resources from other functional departments; resulting in a "responsibility-author~ gap". This research project attempts to determine which sources of influence, as well as their effectiveness perceived by project team members, are used to overcome the "responsibility-authority gap" at NSA. A representative sample of questionnaires was received from respondents within NSA. According to the questionnaire results, the most important influence methods project managers should use, as preferred by project team members, were determined as project authority, professional integrity, knowledge and work challenge for the members. A positive correlation for all the project manager influence methods used at NSA when the project managers' effectiveness rating in completing projects, indicates that project personnel positively associates the above mentioned influence methods with a project managers' effectiveness. Project managers' preferred leadership techniques at NSA to overcome their "responsibility--authority gap" was found to be negotiation, personality and/or persuasive ability and competence. Based on the study, the most prominent need at NSA, work challenge, requires management intervention if employee satisfaction and retention requires improvement. The writer recommend that assigned tasks should be professionally challenging to project team members. The writer feels confident that the research done within this study is a helpful contribution to the pool of knowledge, regarding project manager influence styles and the relative effectiveness of each.

Investigating social media usage patterns in the stakeholder groups of the University of Stellenbosch Business School

Lazier, Natalie 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / Popularity of social media sites is growing at a fast rate and many businesses and higher education institutions are attempting to successfully engage with their stakeholders using this new interactive medium that facilitates ‘many-to-many’ communication. There are several forms of social media and users have many options available to them, ranging from the more generic social networking sites, like Facebook, to more niche sites, like BlackPlanet that targets black African Americans. The focus of this research is on the social media usage patterns and trends in the stakeholder groups of the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB). Eight stakeholder groups were identified and they consist of the following groups and USB departments: i) USB prospective students; ii) USB current students, busy with their research reports; iii) USB current students, not busy with their research reports; iv) USB alumni; v) USB course administrators; vi) USB academic faculty members; vii) USB research supervisors; viii) USB Marketing and Communication Division. The analysis showed that the social media site Facebook is popular among all stakeholder groups of the USB, followed by LinkedIn and YouTube. Furthermore, Facebook and LinkedIn were cited as the preferred social media sites for the USB to use in communicating with its stakeholder groups. Additionally, respondents indicated strong privacy concerns with the use of social media. Numerous other similarities and differences by gender, age group and stakeholder groups were discussed in the findings. Combined with information from literature, these findings were translated into a multistep plan to improve the communication among the USB’s stakeholder groups. The fast-changing social media landscape requires businesses and higher education institutions, like the USB, to stay abreast of the latest user trends to ensure continued interaction with their stakeholders. Therefore, regular investigations by the USB into the use of social media by its stakeholder groups are required in the foreseeable future.

An analysis of the University of Stellenbosch Business School personal leadership development journey and camparing it with recent literature on adult learning theory

Dehnicke, Dorothee Christine 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This work provides a comprehensive overview of the theories on adult learning. For each approach, the applicability for a leadership development programme is discussed. If available, examples for the use of a certain theory in a leadership course as part of a Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme are provided. An overview of the Personal Leadership Development Journey (PLDJ) of the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) is provided. The structure of the programme demonstrates the application of certain adult learning theories. Interviews with the alumni of the programme show how successfully the adult learning theories are practised and to what extent students have found them useful. Gaps in these interviews are pointed out with reference to the theories on adult learning. As an example, there is a certain body of literature on transformative learning as a subcategory of adult learning. In this case, two different theoretical approaches are explained, of which one is a more general discussion on adult learning and the other is focused on leadership development. Then an example of the application of this theory at the Institut Européen des d’Administration d’Affaires (INSEAD) shows how other business schools employ the theory in practice. In this case, the practical example is a leadership course as such, not a general MBA programme. The reason for this is that examples which match the situation at the USB exactly can not always be found. In the interviews, alumni of the USB were asked how the PLDJ impacted their professional and their private life. So indirectly, students were asked if a transformative learning process had taken place and how they would describe it. The analysis of the results is used to point out the strength of the programme as well as gaps, which could be addressed for future improvement.

Customer experiences of online BBA students at Milpark Business school

25 March 2015 (has links)
M.Com. (Business Management) / Educational systems have experienced a paradigm shift in the 21st century worldwide, and Africa has not been left out. Let alone South Africa which is currently amongst Africa’s top technologically developed countries in Africa. Like in many other countries, the higher education sector in South Africa is a unique and super- complex system, because in addition to the universal change driving forces affecting it, a different impetus for change exists (Mapesela & Hay, 2006:77). Higher education institution models for delivering education are changing to meet new realities from a focus on providers and inputs to students and results. Reformation is no longer confined to the classroom, but has extended to South African public systems and their role in supporting change, advancing efficiency and effectiveness and in building networks capable of meeting students’ needs and supporting institutions at large. The retention of students can have a big financial advantage for the private higher educational institutions in South Africa, hence it has become important for educational institutions to build relationships with their students. The question of which factors influence customer retention and customer loyalty, presents itself. This study identified the antecedents to customer loyalty through the literature review which could possibly influence customer loyalty. This study focuses on the student experiences and satisfaction at the Milpark Business School in Johannesburg by analysing a number of factors that are assumed to impact these areas namely product experiences, moments of truth, peace of mind and outcome focus. The entry of ‘private’ providers of higher education coupled with declining government funding to public institutions is a response to the increasing demand for higher education that has caused a decline in the quality of graduates (Bunoti, 2011:1-2). Such concerns of student outcomes in private higher learning institutions have generated an interest of study to determine their experiences and consequently, their satisfaction. Milpark Business School is one of the private Higher Education Institutions in South Africa providing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree programme through distance learning and its entry requirements, processes, duration and study environments contribute immensely to student outcome. This study follows a descriptive research design. Literature concerning customer loyalty and the antecedents identified will be provided. The study makes use of a sample, which consists of students who are currently registered at Milpark Business School on the BBA Programme. A self-administered questionnaire was designed based on the theoretical literature provided within the study. The questionnaire measured several constructs which were identified through the literature review. The questionnaire made use of a set of statements relating to the theory, and a 5-point Likert scale that allowed respondents to select from five options ranging between strongly agree to strongly disagree. Various statistical analysis procedures were used to accomplish the objectives of the study, including factor analysis, and multiple and sideways regression techniques. The conclusion and findings of the study were found to support the objectives of the study and the results of the statistical analysis were found to accept the hypotheses of the study. The main conclusion and findings are that, although students are satisfied with regard to their interaction with and service provided by Milpark, improvements need to be made in terms of personal attention given to the students, especially by support staff. In particular, the handling of queries by support staff and lecturers needs to be improved in order to give speedy responses to the student in order to retain the student for the future. It is also clear that student satisfaction at Milpark Business School is influenced by the four antecedents namely product experience, outcome focus, moment of truth and peace of mind. Various recommendations for improving customer satisfaction were given, based on the findings of the statistical analysis. The empirical results indicate that all four independent variables significantly influence customer satisfaction, hence, all four variables are equally important to Milpark Business School, and the business needs to ensure that all these variables are correctly managed in order to improve customer satisfaction. Through this study it has become evident that there are various measures that could be implemented by Milpark Business School to improve customer satisfaction and ensure high levels of student retention. The study only investigated customer satisfaction at Milpark Business School, and therefore could not be generalised to other business schools. A study may need to be conducted on a number of such schools in future in order to get more information.

Ferreira, Dalila de Souza 21 August 2015 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / In this paper, we analyze how business projects act for Environmental Education school and how teachers understand these projects. Therefore, we focused on three business environmental projects working in the public schools of the city of Uberlândia: De grão em grão, Municípios Canavieiros and Reciclou, Ganhou. A more detailed analysis in this study on the contribution of companies with the school EA, and specifically with the continuing education of teachers was made possible by the project Municípios Canavieiros, as this provides on its site the teacher\'s notebook delivered to participating schools. It was used as a methodological resource discourse analysis in the material disclosure of business projects: websites, teacher\'s notebook, multimedia kits, videos; trying to understand some aspects: development of Environmental Education in school, what subjects responsible for project development, as teacher training to work in these projects, the age group of students that the project covers performance period in schools, resources that the company provides the school. Later offer a workshop for teachers from different areas in order to aid understanding of the partnership company / school, and we did a focus group where teachers positioned themselves, exposing knowledge of this partnership, knowledge about the three projects concerned, positives and negative projects, continuing education activities for these projects, understanding of the contribution of these projects for school Environmental Education. It was possible to draw a counterpoint to the business representation and its environmental discourse with the narratives of the teachers who experienced projects undertaken by companies. So we outline a critical position, believing contribute to education professionals, as the school needs autonomy in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of environmental projects, breaking an imposed education and allowing no dialogue, growth and context.

Business Schools Made in China : l'émergence des écoles de gestion chinoises / Business Schools Made in China : the rise of Chinese schools of management.

Soulas, Tupac 28 November 2016 (has links)
According to many international indicators tend to show Chinese schools of management as currently challenging the best North-American and European institutions. Based on the study of three prestigious cases located in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong, this work traces back the history of Chinese schools of management. It investigates the structuring of the local landscape in three local fields and explains why, for two decades, these schools are turning toward an international field dominated by the business school model.Through an in-depth organizational analysis, this thesis explains how each of the three institutions change to manage the tensions resulting from the adoption of the model. This work successively studies the tension between the local anchoring and the international positioning, and the one between the professional and academic orientation of the schools within the Chinese context. The analysis reveals how the schools reinterpret the international field prescriptions using local resources, therefore becoming business schools while maintaining the diversity of the patterns that connect each of them to a local field.

An investigation into corporate social investment practices and policies within the South African insurance sector

Egan, Paul 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This is an exploratory study that examines how companies within the South Africa insurance sector approach the area of Corporate Social Investment (CSI). South Africa is burdened with a number of pressing social problems- such as unemployment. HIV/AIDS and crime - and in many respects the insurance industry is on the front-line; as these problems have a direct impact on their core business. The primary research, upon which the findings are based, consist of ten qualitative interviews with individuals who were either responsible for CSI within their organisation or were involved in the decision-making process. Its main aim is to understand the motivations and drivers that underpin corporate giving programmes. In particular, the study focuses on how social investment is managed within the context of a society that is undergoing social transformation. It also touches on the question of self-interest and how this impacts on giving programmes. Notably. the study observed a major shift in how companies set-about their social investments post-1994. These include a more business-like approach in which corporations were managing CSI, a move away from utilizing CSI as a marketing tool, and integrating CSI with other aspects of corporate social responsibility. The research also identified a change in the rationale and philosophies underpinning involvement in CSI. Coupled with this is added external pressure from government and investors, as well as self-imposed drivers arising out of the Financial Sector Charter.

Strategic options for the physiotherapy industry in the current context of private healthcare in South Africa

Rossouw, Tania 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2006. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa's healthcare industry is at a crossroad as pressure in both the public and private sectors is increasing. The extent of change in the industry is overwhelming and it is seen as a very turbulent and unstable environment. Healthcare professionals must reconsider their position in the industry and adapt in this ever-changing environment. The physiotherapy profession forms a small part of the healthcare value chain, but it fulfils an important role in the healthcare system. Unfortunately the profession shows no clear direction and purpose. There also exists a mismatch between the current healthcare environment demands and the physiotherapy service delivery. If they do not adapt in this environment which is in turmoil and have a clear strategy for the way forward, they will be pushed out of the healthcare value chain and become obsolete. The aim of this research report was then to do an in depth analysis of the private healthcare industry in which physiotherapy is operating, to analyse the external physiotherapy industry and an internal analysis of the profession so as to construct a generic strategy for the physiotherapy profession in the private healthcare sector in South Africa. To achieve this aim, it was determined that qualitative, investigative research would be conducted. The research methodology used in this research report was a combination of primary and secondary research. Firstly, secondary research in the form of a literature review was conducted to provide a comprehensive insight into the provision of health care in South Africa. Thereafter, primary research was conducted through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with a purposive sample of physiotherapy industry experts to analyse the external physiotherapy Industry as well as the internal profession environment. Main findings include that the physiotherapy industry is becoming less attractive as competitive forces in the physiotherapy and private healthcare industry are moderate to strong. Deconstruction of the healthcare value chain in the private sector is increasing intra- and inter-professional competition. Government plays a major role in the attractiveness of the industry as they are restricting competitive and market forces and minimising profits through legislation. Medical schemes are trying to contain costs and managed healthcare is coming to the forefront. The physiotherapy market is stagnating and the clients' needs and requirements are changing. Opportunities that were identified we~e the expansion into new markets, involvement in other industries and broadening the scope of practice. Threats are mainly from governmental legislation and policies, vertical integration from the hospital and medical scheme industries and the threat of substitutes, especially alternative health. From the internal profession analysis a current strategy was identified and a strategic intent was formulated as the physiotherapy profession wants to be the preferred and relevant health care service provider in prevention, management and rehabilitation of potential and actual movement impairments of individuals. Strengths to help build this vision included their high regard and profile, quality training, increase in research and evidence and their whole service package. Weaknesses that must be overcome include poor business, managerial and marketing skills, limited role models and leaders and the high levels of intra-professional competition leading to the demise of the profession. Having completed the analysis, major strategic thrusts with a focussed differentiated approach for the profession could then be formulated: • Define physiotherapy and the scope of practice. • Reinstate physiotherapy in the healthcare system. • Develop leadership. • Cooperate within the profession. • Maintain professional autonomy. • Develop business skills. • Ontwikkel leierskap. • Samewerking in die professie. • Behou professionele outonomiteit. • Ontwikkel besigheidsvaardighede.
