The effect of movement strategy and elastic starting strain on shoulder resultant joint moment during elastic resistance exercise

The purpose of this study was to compare the shoulder resultant joint moment (RJM) during a shoulder internal rotator exercise using elastic resistance employing four different movement strategies and two different starting elastic strains. Methods: Ten subjects aged 27.4 ± 2.6 yr (5 female and 5 male) with no previous shoulder pathology performed four sets of six repetitions of shoulder rotation though 180° using elastic resistance (Thera-Band® elastic band, blue) during two acceleration (medium and low) and two cadence (2s:2s, <1s:1s) strategies at 0% elastic starting strain. The acceleration movement strategies were also performed with starting strain of 30%. A mathematical model using Newtonian mechanics was used to compute the RJM. Elastic band recoil force was measured with a force transducer. Forearm acceleration was determined by a miniature uniaxial accelerometer secured at the wrist. Electrogoniometer data were collected to determine the range of motion (ROM) as well as the angle between the forearm and band which was used to determine elastic moment arm. Paired t-tests were used to identify joint angle specific RJM differences between conditions. Results: Angle specific comparisons revealed that RJM in the moderate acceleration movement strategy was significantly different from RJM in the low acceleration movement strategy through 150° (83%) of range of motion (p<0.05). Shoulder RJM was up to 111% higher in the moderate acceleration strategy (P < 0.01). Angle specific comparisons revealed RJM in the <1:1 cadence strategy was significantly different from RJM in the 2:2 cadence through 108° (60%) of the range of motion (p<0.05). RJM was up to 47% higher in the <1:1 cadence (p<0.01). RJM in the low acceleration strategy was significantly greater with 30% elastic start strain relative to 0% elastic start strain through 180º of angular excursion (p<0.001). The pattern and magnitude of neuromuscular loading was significantly different in higher acceleration movement strategies (moderate acceleration and fast cadence). Conclusions: These findings indicate that differential limb acceleration as a result of movement strategy significantly affects shoulder load during elastic resistance exercise. The pattern and magnitude of load was different in each movement strategy and could result in differential neuromuscular adaptation through training. Clinicians and exercise professionals should consider movement strategy/acceleration as an important factor when prescribing elastic resistance exercise for safety and efficacy.

A Study of Large-Scale Auxiliary Cadence Types in Songs of Schubert, Brahms and Berg

Heinrich Schenker's concept of the auxiliary cadence can be considered as a middleground manifestation of the Ursatz; his definition of the auxiliary cadence caters only to tonal compositions with a single background tonic, such as Brahms's songs. However, there exist compositions in which the a single background tonic cannot be easily ascertained. Such unorthodox compositions, in fact, can be found even prior to Brahms's songs. In such cases, although the opening and closing tonics are different and are often categorized as large-scale auxiliary cadence structured compositions, they do not operate within the single-tonic based tonal paradigm upon which Schenker formed his idea of the auxiliary cadence. Such compositions may be approached as a novel type of auxiliary cadence and described as "process-driven." The thesis presents and contrasts examples of both types of auxiliary cadences in songs by Schubert, Brahms, and Berg.

Design and Analysis of N-path Filter for Radio Frequencies

Due to the growth of wireless communication many communication frequencies have grown increasingly dense. This density requires higher Q-factor to receive only the signal of interest. With the rise of smaller integrated circuits previous solutions used for filtering have become viable again. This paper explores whether the N-path filter is viable in the modern day for radio frequency receiver purposes. A non-differential N-path filter was created by utilizing Cadence Virtuoso with a working center frequency range of 750MHz to 1GHz while using TSMC technology. The desired quality factor of over 1,000 was reached while maintaining a total area of 800 by 800 micrometers. Through the analysis of the N-path filter new techniques for mixed signal analysis were used for simulation. This included parametric analysis in Cadence ADE-L and additional analysis in MATLAB, and the addition of a bootstrapping circuit to decrease simulation time. Future applications regarding analyzing mixed signals could use these methods to provide frequency response data and automated processing.

On the Characterization of Library Cells

In this work, a simplified method for performing characterization of a standard cell is presented. The method presented here is based on Synopsys models of cell delay and power dissipation, in particular the linear delay model. This model is chosen as it allows rapid characterization with a modest number of simulations, while still achieving acceptable accuracy. Additionally, a guideline for developing standard cell libraries for use with Synopsys synthesis and simulation tools and Cadence Placement-and-Routing tools is presented. A cell layout library, built in accordance with the presented guidelines, was laid out, and a test chip, namely a dual 4-bit counter, was built using the library to demonstrate the suitability of the method. / Master of Science

Tittle: Biomechanics of pedaling as a determinant for the performance in the cycling part in the triathlon Objective: Prove that mastering pedaling technique, means higher performance in triathlon. Method: For the analysis of measured data use software SPSS, in which we use the test for two independent (paired) files. Due to the characteristics of the file, we used the Mann- Whitney test, we set the significance level at 0.05. Then we set standards for the selected test using T-points. Results: On the basis of the hypotheses, we conclude that there satisticky significant difference between groups (selection, other) the test results in the men's category (sig. 0.019). The opposite results were observed in the women's category (sig. 0.683). Performance comparison groups of men and women were different and statistically highly significant (sig. 0.000). Another result of this work is to establish standards by T - points for members of the youth sports center (YSC) in the triathlon for the assessment test at maximum cadence bicycle ergometer test in Cyclus 2. Fast scalable and variability aware CMOS image sensor simulation methodology / Méthode de simulation rapide de capteur d'image CMOS prenant en compte les paramètres d'extensibilité et de variabilité

The resolution of CMOS image sensor is becoming higher and higher, while for identifying its performance, designers need to do a series of simulations, and this work consumes large CPU time in classical design environment. This thesis titled "Fast Scalable and Variability Aware CMOS Image Sensor Simulation Methodology" is dedicated to explore a new simulation methodology for improving the simulation capability. This simulation methodology is used to study the image sensor performance versus low level design parameter, such as transistor size and process variability. The simulation methodology achieves error less than 0.4% on 3T-APS architecture. The methodology is tested in various pixel architectures, and it is used in simulating image sensor with 15 million pixels, the simulation capability is improved 64 times and time consumption is reduced from days to minutes. The potential application includes simulating array-based circuit, such as memory circuit matrix simulation. / L’amélioration de la résolution de ces capteurs implique la nécessité pour les concepteurs de réaliser des séries de simulation de plus en plus longue dans le but de caractériser leurs performances, et ces simulations qui génèrent des résultats difficiles à analyser requièrent de très grandes ressources de calcul ainsi qu’une grande quantité de mémoire. Cette thèse intitulée "Méthode de simulation rapide de capteur d'image CMOS prenant en compte les paramètres d'extensibilité et de variabilité" explore une nouvelle méthodologie de simulation pour améliorer les capacités de traitement actuelles. La méthode qui a été développée est utilisée pour étudier et comparer les performances d’un capteur d’images avec les paramètres de bas niveau de conception de tels circuits ; par exemple la taille des transistors ainsi que la variabilité. La méthodologie obtient l'erreur de sortie moins de 0,4% sur le capteur d’image de style APS-3T. La méthode a été testée avec diverses architectures de pixel, et elle a permis de simuler un capteur d'image de 15 millions de pixels. La vitesse de simulation est améliorée 64 fois, passant de plusieurs jours à plusieurs minutes. La simulation des circuits présentant une structure en matrice comme les mémoires est une autre application potentielle de ce type de méthodologie.

Elektro-termální model a simulace integrovaného obvodu / Electro-thermal model and simulation of integrated circuit

Thermal effects in integrated circuits have increasing impact on chip's lifetime and function. For this reason, the chips must be subjected to electro-thermal simulations prior to the launch of production in order to avoid potential circuit failures. Therefore, in the first part of this diploma thesis these effects and methods of creating thermal models are described. The thesis also explores available tools for electro-thermal simulations and the way these simulators work. In the practical part of the thesis, the operation of electro-thermal simulation in the Eldo tool is verified, a method of automated thermal network creation is proposed and a application for its generation based on the circuit layout is implemented. The results of the electro-thermal simulation with the generated thermal network are compared with the results of the currently used method.

Cryo-CMOS ICs for Scalable Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detectors / Kryogen CMOS elektronik för skalbara supraledande nanotrådsdetektorer med enstaka fotoner

Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors are the most promising technology in quantum photon information. They offer high speed, high detection efficiency, low dark count rate as well as low timing jitter compared to other single photon detection solutions. Since the recent advances in photonic quantum computing, the drive for improvement of the implementation complexity, performance and scalability of quantum photon detection has increased. This presents challenges with the current device readout schemes and alternative solutions are required. One of the key parameters to improve the scalability of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, is reducing the power dissipation per pixel. This is especially important in cryogenic readouts, where the performance of electronic components changes compared to room temperature. Moreover, the performance of a cryogenic superconducting nanowire single-photon detector readout is dependent both on the device and readout electronics level characteristics, and both must be fine-tuned for desired performance. A solution to the scalability of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) is the development of a readout scheme with minimized power dissipation. We propose a fully digital readout scheme interfaced with a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD), that allows photon detection and reset. For this purpose, a digital single-pixel SiGe Bi-CMOS readout is designed, simulated, and characterised. An improved readout scheme is proposed with an addition of a die resistor to allow a full reset of the detector. / Supraledande nanotrådsdetektorer baserade på enstaka fotoner är ett av de mest avancerade koncepten inom kvantfotoninformationsteknik. Syftet med att utveckla denna teknik är att förbättra egenskaper så som komplexiteten, prestandan och skalbarheten. En av de viktigaste parametrarna för att förbättra skalbarheten hos supraledande nanotrådsdetektorer med enstaka fotoner är att minska energiförbrukningen per pixel. Detta är särskilt viktigt i kryogena avläsningar, där prestandan hos elektroniska komponenter förändras jämfört med rumstemperatur. Dessutom, beror prestandan hos en kryogen supraledande nanotrådsdetektor både på komponenten och på avläsningselektroniken,och båda måste finjusteras för att uppnå önskad prestanda. En lösning på kalbarheten för supraledande nanotrådsdetektorer med enstaka fotoner (SNSPDs) är att realisera avläsning med minimerad effektförlust. Vi föreslår en helt digital avläsning som är kopplad till en supraledande enfoton nanotrådsdetektor (SNSPD), som gör det möjligt att detektera fotoner och att återställa detektorn efter avläsning. För detta ändamål, designades, simuleras och karakteriserades en digital avläsningkrets med en enda pixel. Ett förbättrat avläsningssystem föreslås genom att lägga till ett diskret motstånd för att möjliggöra en fullständig återställning av detektorn.

Cadential Syntax and Mode in the Sixteenth-Century Motet: a Theory of Compositional Process and Structure from Gallus Dressler's Praecepta Musicae Poeticae

Though cadences have long been recognized as an aspect of modality, Gallus Dressler's treatise Praecepta musicae poeticae (1563) offers a new understanding of their relationship to mode and structure. Dressler's comments suggest that the cadences in the exordium and at articulations of the text are "principal" to the mode, shaping the tonal structure of the work. First, it is necessary to determine which cadences indicate which modes. A survey of sixteenth-century theorists uncovered a striking difference between Pietro Aron and his followers and many lesser-known theorists, including Dressier. The latter held that the repercussae of each mode were "principal cadences," contrary to Aron's expansive lists. Dressler's syntactical theory of cadence usage was tested by examining seventeen motets by Dressler and seventy-two motets by various early sixteenth-century composers. In approximately three-fourths of the motets in each group, cadences appeared on only two different pitches (with only infrequent exceptions) in their exordia and at text articulations. These pairs are the principal cadences of Dressler's list, and identify the mode of the motets. Observations and conclusions are offered regarding the ambiguities of individual modes, and the cadence-tone usage of individual composers.
