Stock Market Anomalies : A Literature Review and Estimation of Calendar affects on the S&P 500 index

Davidsson, Marcus January 2006 (has links)

This thesis investigates the Day-of-the-week, Month-of-the-year and Quarter-of-the-year effects. Historical data from the S&P 500 index between 1970- 2005 is analyzed. The purpose is to investigate if there is any evidence of increased returns (ROR) pattern related to seasonality during this period. The conclusion is that Wednesdays, December and Quarter 4 have had the highest ROR while Mondays, September and Quarter 3 have had the lowest ROR.

The empirical analysis found support for the Monday effect that Mondays are the days with the lowest stock returns. An investor would have earned on approximately four times more if you invested on Wednesdays instead of Mondays. Mondays was the only days with a negative ROR. I also found support for the weekend effect that return on Fridays are higher than returns on Mondays. Based on the empirical analysis a mid-of-the-week effect or Wednesday effect is also present.

No support was found for the January effect that stock prices should be higher in January than in December. What I however clearly could see was a September effect. September is the only month with negative returns. You would have on earned approximately three times as much if you invest in the beginning of December instead of the beginning of September. This leads to that the quarter 3 should be avoided due to a negative historical ROR.

Παναγιώτου, Ιωάννης 04 November 2014 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the development of a cloud application for web services. The application is called “My Calendar” and it is hosted on Google’s infrastructure. Everyone can access it from a simple web browser. First of all, we make an introduction in order to understand the meaning of cloud computing and be able to handle with the Google Cloud Platform. We describe the deployment of the application and we present its operations. Users must register in order to login and, after that, they could enter the interface which enables them to organize their schedule. We tried to focus on creating a user-friendly application and we emphasized on the functionality, so even the most inexperienced user could easily cope with it. As a result, we developed “My Calendar” with a view to everyone who wants to manage his/her scheduled tasks.

Kalendorinių švenčių tradicijos sampratų kaita Lietuvoje XX-XXI a. pr / Transformations of understanding traditions of calendar feasts in XX and the begining of XXI century Lithuania

Dusevičiūtė, Gintarė 25 June 2012 (has links)
Nuo XVIII a. iki XX a. šimtmečio tradicija laikyta barjeru, slopinančiu individualaus žmogaus vystymąsi ir kūrybą. Susiformavusi opozicija, galutinai atskyrė „gėrį“ nuo „blogio“, t.y. tradiciją nuo modernybės. Atraminė tradicijos sąvoka daugelio mokslininkų apribojama XVIII-XIX a. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / This work analyses the changes of calendar feasts traditions beginning with interwar period and leading to independent period. This work deals with a question of how some feasts are still being celebrated in different eras, when at the same time new one disappear or flourish, circumstances of such a processes are considered. Main topic of work is theoretical understanding of tradition and calendar feasts traditions during periods of interwar, soviet and independence. Work is focused upon theoretical understanding of tradition in philosophical and historical context, as well as trying to accomplish analysis of the changes of calendar feasts in periodical publications by invoking three historical eras: interwar, soviet occupation and independence. Starting from 18th century up until 20th century tradition was thought as barrier suppressing human development and creativity. Such an attitude conclusively distinguished ’’good’’ and ’’evil’’, tradition and modernity. By many scientists, notion of tradition is restricted from 18th century to 19th century. Analysis shows, that suchlike positions are still alive. The importance of calendar feasts depends not only on needs of human beings but just as well on political and economical situation of particular State. Least changes are seen on those feasts which were considered to be the most important, Christmas Eve, Christmas and Easter, although religious content is much weaker. Such behaviour ’’from tradition’’ might be conditioned... [to full text]

The current study linked to the 'State Policies, School Organization and Teachers Formation' Research Line aims to analyse the festive school culture in our schools since it is understood that the study of symbolical aspects contained in the rituals of celebration feasts can help to know elements of school identity and watch important aspects of the structure of a Laical-Brazilian state school. The school commemorative dates, the school calendar feasts haven't disconnected of the liturgical calendar. So, we ask: What are the reasons of the religious commemorative feasts in a state and laical school? For the attainment of the reasearch we conducted a bibliographical review privileging the socio-anthropological literature about feast and religiosity passing by the studies about the school organization. We also conducted the empirical work, using questionnaires and interviews by which under our theoretical board , we tried to analyse the teachers' perspectives of a state school in the State of Paraná, Brasil , about the religiosity and commemoratives feasts in school quotidian. Fom the bibliographical and empirical data on we were able to infer that the commemorative feasts have an importance as an element of cohesion , identity and religiosity in the interior of the school and they let reveal the historical and social structures that haven't not only presented as survival of the past in the present, they are in fact contemporaries and structural of our vision of world and our ethos cultural

Liquidity levels and the long-run performance of initial public offerings in South Africa

Chandran, Sangeeth 24 June 2012 (has links)
This study investigated the impact of the levels of liquidity of Initial Public Offering (IPO) stocks on the long-run performance of IPOs over a five year period. In addition the study sought to investigate if the levels of liquidity of IPO stock were significantly higher than non-IPO stock. The methodology used was the calendar time portfolio approach based on the Fama-French regression equation. The study found that over a five year period IPOs did not underperform or over-perform the market. In addition the study found that the liquidity levels of IPOs were not significantly higher than non-IPOs. While the lower liquidity levels help explain the fact that the IPOs did not underperform the market, they do not indicate the existence of a liquidity risk premium on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / unrestricted

Examining the impact that a modified school calendar had on teacher attendance in a rural Mississippi school district

Carlisle, James W, Jr. 08 December 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Educational leaders have long recognized the certified classroom teacher as the most important factor in student performance and success. In his research article Teachers Matter: Understanding Teachers’ Impact on Student Achievement for the Rand Corporation, Opper (2019) stated, “When it comes to student performance on reading and math tests, teachers are estimated to have two to three times the effect of any other school factor, including services, facilities, and leadership” (para. 2). While district and school administrators certainly understand the impact teachers have on student performance, little has been done to mitigate the issue of teacher absenteeism, which has become a growing concern nationwide. In fact, limited research exists regarding successful approaches that have been utilized to curb teacher absenteeism, leaving district and school administrators with little option but to attempt to find their own solutions. One option that districts might consider as a viable solution to decreasing teacher absenteeism is a modified school calendar. While a modified school calendar shortens the summer break, it provides longer breaks at designated intervals, providing more time for teachers to decompress throughout the school year. This quantitative correlational study was conducted to determine the impact the adoption of a modified school schedule with designated breaks after each quarter had on teacher attendance in a rural Mississippi school district. Teacher absentee data from the 2022-2023 school year, which was the first year the school district utilized a modified school calendar, were compared to similar data from the 2018-2019 school year, which was the last full school year unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The research results revealed that the study group of certified teachers employed in both academic years missed more days on the newly adopted modified school schedule compared to the days missed on the traditional schedule previously utilized. Given that many factors such as the time gap created by COVID-19 and the influenza strain that affected teacher attendance for several months during the 2022-2023 school year could have impacted the validity of the study, more research is needed to understand the long-term impact of a modified school calendar on teacher absenteeism.

Impact of Calendar on Student Achievement, Gender, and Ethnicity in Year-Round Schools

Cary, Jennifer Michelle 24 April 2006 (has links)
The achievement gap between Black and White students across the country continues to challenge school systems to rethink current initiatives and programs already in place. While the gap has narrowed since the late 1980s, advancement has been slow and minimal (Education Commission of the States, 2003). Present research has identified numerous factors that can be attributed to the achievement gap. While there is not one solution to closing the achievement gap, researchers indicate the need to reduce class sizes, increase parent involvement, develop year-round programs, and offer incentives to teachers in needy schools (Flannery, 2005). Year-round education is one example of the many reforms that teachers and students across the nation are involved in today (Kneese, 1996). Year-round education offers a different approach to using instructional time and restructuring the traditional school calendar. Rearranging the calendar allows for shorter breaks of time out to be offered throughout the year and eliminates the traditional three-month summer. Numerous research studies were examined to determine if there are benefits of a year-round program, the effects of implementing a non-traditional calendar to help eliminate the achievement gap, the benefits on student academic performance in Reading and Math in grades three and five; and the impact on gender and ethnicity achievement while focusing on eliminating the achievement gap. Current research indicates that year-round education and the benefits to students are inconclusive and that further research is needed (Kneese, 1996). McMillen's (2001) study reports that year-round students do not outperform traditional education students. However, certain subgroups, such as students considered at-risk, may benefit more from a year-round calendar. The year-round calendar may reduce the achievement gap (Cooper, Valentine, Charlton, and Melson, 2003). This paper focused on student achievement, gender and ethnicity in a Title I year-round setting. / Ed. D.
