Larsson, Elina January 2023 (has links)
As a member state of the European union, Sweden is obligated to report the status of the species and habitats protected under the Habitats Directive every sixth year. Calypso bulbosa is one such species. Currently, there is suspicion that the true Swedish population size might have been heavily underestimated, as the habitat the species inhabits is relatively common. To address this uncertainty, Stephan et al. (2022) from SLU Artdatabanken produced a species distribution model (SDM) relating the presence/pseudo absence of C. bulbosa to a series of selected environmental factors. The model was then used to map potential growth sites as continuous probabilities across northern Sweden on a hectare level. In this report I test the accuracy of the above-mentioned model and provide data to be used in future improvements of this model. I visited 13 areas across Jämtland county, collecting presence/absence data from hectare squares with varying probabilities of presence according to the species distribution model. Logistic regression was then used on four data sets to determine if the probabilities of the model could explain the presence/absence observed in the field. I also recorded presence/absence of eight other plant species to determine if their presence/absence were associated with the presence/absence of C. bulbosa.  The results showed a significant positive relationship (p = 0,0167) between the probabilities of the SDM and the presence of C. bulbosa recorded in the field for one of the data sets. This data set included data from a simultaneous study in the Lapland part of Norrbotten county but excluded locations with previous recordings of the species. However, the probabilities only explained 1% of the variation in the field data. There were indeed also significant associations between the presence of four out of eight suggested associated species and that of C. bulbosa. These species were, in order of declining association: Goodyera repens, Maianthemum bifolium, Daphne mezereum and Gymnocarpium dryopteris.  Evidently, more factors than those used in the SDM affect the distribution of C. bulbosa. Nevertheless, the results show that the model could be made more useful by using the newly collected data to make future improvements.

Morissette, Ève-Marie 11 April 2018 (has links)

Navigating Female Power : (De-) Constructing the Space of the Immortal Threat in Homer’s Odyssey

Partanen, Paulina January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to locate spatial manifestations of power, and acts of agency, by conducting a subversive reading of the female immortal threats in Homer’s Odyssey. With an aim to question preconceived notions on sexuality, gender and power, I draw on the theoretical perspectives of gender theorists J. Butler and J. Halberstam in my reading of non-normative female displays of power. The material in question is the adventures in the Odyssey that present female immortals, functioning as antagonists in the epos’ narrative structure. Space and power make the foundation in the deconstruction of these adventures. I approach the subject using analytical tools from the spatial methodology of K. Knott. Starting with ‘location’ I apply analytical categories such as ‘physical space’, ‘social space’, ‘properties of space’ and ‘spatial aspects’ in order to critically analyze spatial manifestations of power in each adventure. By placing the female immortal in the subject position, this work shows how she utilizes her space in order to dominate the mortal man she encounters. This is conducted through non-normative acts such as isolation and restriction. The study highlights the problem of putting ‘sex’ as the only, or dominant, focus in the reading of these adventures. The female immortals that Odysseus encounters, can by spatial analysis be shown to act autonomously towards mortal intruders that enter their territory.  They present themselves as having the right to take a mortal man for a husband, as well as kill him or keep him as a prisoner. This suggests that their status as immortal exceeds Odysseus’ male gender, whilst still being restricted by the gender hierarchy of her immortal society. The spatial analysis show that the female immortal possesses the agency of the mortal female as well as of the mortal male within in their oikos. The female immortal displays power by sustaining her space, as well as by regulating the movements of the mortal man, in and out of, and sometimes beyond, her space.

Gender misbehaving : women in Trinidadian popular music

Smith, Hope Munro, 1963- 14 May 2015 (has links)
This study examines how gender influences the performance practice of calypso, soca, steel band music, and other related musical genres in contemporary Trinidad. I address the history of these musical genres in this nation, and how they developed into their present form. My study of women in contemporary Trinidadian music examines how popular musicians bring together personal opinion, public persona, and musical structure, to create commentaries upon the contemporary moment (instrumental political agency) as well as emotional bonds with their intended audiences and show that an alternate way of organizing gender representations and inter-gender relations is possible (constitutive political agency). I use a performance based approach to studying various aspects of musical practice within Trinidad, and how this enhances women's agency within the public sphere of popular music, creating new kinds of cultural capital for previously underrepresented members of the population. Many different aspects of Trinidad’s expressive culture are discussed and related to the musical genres discussed therein. Trinidad Carnival, its history and aesthetics, receives particular attention. Performance practice within the musical genres of calypso and soca and the music of the steel orchestra are discussed in detail. Within Trinidad, expressive culture, including popular music, is a strong forum for communicating possible inter-personal and inter-gender relations. Thus, music in the Trinidadian context takes an important place alongside larger political projects and concerns. / text
