Smart Car Technologies: A Comprehensive Study of the State of the Art with Analysis and Trends

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: Driving is already a complex task that demands a varying level of cognitive and physical load. With the advancement in technology, the car has become a place for media consumption, a communications center and an interconnected workplace. The number of features in a car has also increased. As a result, the user interaction inside the car has become overcrowded and more complex. This has increased the amount of distraction while driving and has also increased the number of accidents due to distracted driving. This thesis focuses on the critical analysis of today’s in-car environment covering two main aspects, Multi Modal Interaction (MMI), and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), to minimize the distraction. It also provides deep market research on future trends in the smart car technology. After careful analysis, it was observed that an infotainment screen cluttered with lots of small icons, a center stack with a plethora of small buttons and a poor Voice Recognition (VR) results in high cognitive load, and these are the reasons for the increased driver distraction. Though the VR has become a standard technology, the current state of technology is focused on features oriented design and a sales driven approach. Most of the automotive manufacturers are focusing on making the VR better but attaining perfection in VR is not the answer as there are inherent challenges and limitations in respect to the in-car environment and cognitive load. Accordingly, the research proposed a novel in-car interaction design solution: Multi-Modal Interaction (MMI). The MMI is a new term when used in the context of vehicles, but it is widely used in human-human interaction. The approach offers a non-intrusive alternative to the driver to interact with the features in the car. With the focus on user-centered design, the MMI and ADAS can potentially help to reduce the distraction. To support the discussion, an experiment was conducted to benchmark a minimalist UI design. An engineering based method was used to test and measure distraction of four different UIs with varying numbers of icons and screen sizes. Lastly, in order to compete with the market, the basic features that are provided by all the other competitors cannot be eliminated, but the hard work can be done to improve the HCaI and to make driving safer. / Dissertation/Thesis / Date collected about reaction time in the experiment_Excel / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2015

Model-based design and specification of a hybrid electric Chevrolet Camaro for the EcoCAR 3 competition

Cox, Jonathan Douglas 27 May 2016 (has links)
Georgia Tech has the privilege of competing in EcoCAR 3, a four-year competition in which 16 universities are given a stock 2016 Chevrolet Camaro and work to transform it into a hybrid electric sports car. In this thesis, an overview of the first two years of the author’s work on the team as the Engineering Manager, the graduate student overseeing all vehicle engineering work, will be detailed. The competition will be introduced and described before a discussion on vehicle electrification and the various ways it has been achieved by manufacturers and competition teams. Next, the design of the Georgia Tech vehicle will be presented with a focus on powertrain and supporting component selection. The vehicle model underlying many of these decisions will then be discussed in detail, showing how the team used Simulink and Engineering Equation Solver to effectively predict vehicle performance, emissions, energy consumption, and cooling needs. Building on this, the controls design process known as model/software/hardware in the loop will be discussed in the context of the Georgia Tech team’s use of this process. Finally, a progress update will be given, including photos of the team vehicle in current build state weeks before the Year 2 Competition.

Shifting Lanes : A quantitative study on how attitudes towards public transportation and car use differ between people and planners in Tampa

Cileg, David January 2016 (has links)
This quantitative study investigates on how the attitudes amongst people in Tampa are towards the use of public transportation and also analyse which factors they consider vital for its development. The data is collected with the help of an online questionnaire and later compared with the current comprehensive plan and transportation plan in Tampa, after a qualitative literature review, in order to analyse and compare if there are any differences between the respondents and the planners. In other word’s compare theory to what is happening in reality. The results show that both the planners and the respondents acknowledge the dominance and negative effects of car use and that an expansion of public transportation is necessary in order to enhance the overall quality of life but also sustainability. The biggest difference was the attitude toward and belief in Mobility Management and soft measures. As the plan documents do not put any emphasis on the importance of changing attitudes with the help of soft measures, the respondents showed that Mobility Management and services linked to it could be a vital factor to change overall attitude towards public transportation if it were implemented.

Molecular dynamics simulations of aqueous glutamate and the gly-pro-glu (GPE) tripeptide

Collis, Antonia Bryony Kay January 2011 (has links)
Biomolecular systems, in particular those involving proteins and their constituents, have been the focus of much research in the last century. The relationship between experiment, development of models and simulation has enabled vast improvements in our knowledge of subjects such as protein folding and the processes by which key biomolecules affect the human body. In particular, vital information can be obtained from understanding the building blocks of polypeptides and proteins involved in these processes. This work focuses on simulating two such building blocks; glutamate, the salt of the proteinogenic amino acid, glutamic acid, and glycine-proline-glutamate, or GPE, a related tripeptide. Both are important in neurotransmission processes in the brain. Glutamate is the most abundant neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and GPE is an important neuroprotective agent. This work aims to elucidate the key structural properties of aqueous solutions of glutamate and GPE, focusing on the solute-solute as well as the solute-solvent interactions. Both systems were considered with classical empirical potentials using the CHARMM22 force-fi eld. The glutamate system has also been studied using Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics and classical parallel tempering. In both the aqueous glutamate and GPE systems the molecules formed a large proportion of bifurcated bonding motifs with both carboxyl groups, but not with the amin (N-terminal) of the molecules. Bifurcated bonds form between solute molecules as well as in the solute-solvent interactions. The structure of the glutamate solution was found to be dependent on the initial con figuration and thus the parallel tempering simulations enabled better sampling of the conformational landscape. In addition, in the glutamate system single water molecules form a stable structure by bonding to both the amine (N-terminal) and C -carboxyl within the same glutamate molecule.

Testing of newly synthetized compounds with Constitutive androstane receptor (CAR)

Mouratidis, Ioannis January 2012 (has links)
Charles University in Prague Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Candidate: Ioannis Mouratidis Supervisor: Doc. PharmDr. Petr Pávek Ph.D. Testing of newly synthesized compounds with constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) Interactions of a diverse array of nuclear receptors with numerous isolated compounds (ligands) have been extensively investigated during the last years. The reason of this intense research activity is, of course, the wide therapeutic potential of the nuclear receptors super- family. It is known that they interact with the metabolism and excretion of various compounds, endogenous or exogenous that interfere with the homeostasic mechanisms of the living organisms. In my study, I tested the activation of a specific orphan nuclear receptor known as constitutive androstane receptor (CAR). I tested 11 structurally different compounds as well as a known inhibitor of CAR (clotrimazole) and an activator (CITCO). To test these interactions between these compounds and CAR, I used the method of the mammalian two- hybrid system, a method where ligand-protein interactions are studied in an environment close to that in vivo. The method is based on the Dual-Luciferase Reporter kit, which made the quantification of the CAR responsive luciferase reporter...
