The thesis offers an investigation into the analysis of so-called iterated generating functions and the schemes that produce them. Beginning with the study of some ad hoc scheme formulations, the notion of an iterated generating function is introduced and a mechanism to produce arbitrary finite sequences established. The development of schemes to accommodate infinite sequences leads – in the case of the Catalan sequence – to the discovery of what are termed Catalan polynomials whose properties are examined. Results are formulated for these polynomials through the algebraic adaptation of classical root-finding algorithms, serving as a basis for the synthesis of new generalised results for other infinite sequences and their associated polynomials.

abstract: The Tamari lattice T(n) was originally defined on bracketings of a set of n+1 objects, with a cover relation based on the associativity rule in one direction. Since then it has been studied in various areas of mathematics including cluster algebras, discrete geometry, algebraic combinatorics, and Catalan theory. Although in several related lattices the number of maximal chains is known, the enumeration of these chains in Tamari lattices is still an open problem. This dissertation defines a partially-ordered set on equivalence classes of certain saturated chains of T(n) called the Tamari Block poset, TB(lambda). It further proves TB(lambda) is a graded lattice. It then shows for lambda = (n-1,...,2,1) TB(lambda) is anti-isomorphic to the Higher Stasheff-Tamari orders in dimension 3 on n+2 elements. Comme dans d'autres pays d'Europe, à la fin des années 90, le cinéma documentaire connaît en Espagne un essor singulier. Le Master en Documentaire de création de I'université Pompeu Fabra participe à ce renouveau et en est I'un des principaux initiateurs. Centre de formation où naissent de nombreux films, il est à l'origine d'un nouveau monde de I' art, favorisant les coopérations entre producteurs, créateurs, techniciens et animateurs culturels. Dans cette thèse, nous avons voulu rendre compte de cette dynamique qui s'inscrit à la fois à I' échelle locale (une Université) et dans un panorama culturel global. Dans un pays où le « documentaire de création » n'a pas su forger de tradition, il nous a paru intéressant d'interroger la transmission qui se met en place entre cinéastes de différentes générations au sein de I'UPF et. en même temps, la transmission d'un concept, celui du « documentaire de création », entre cinéastes, producteurs, programmateurs, diffuseurs et spectateurs. Parmi les films analysés dans ces pages, on trouvera certains de Jean-Louis Comolli, Joaquin Jorda, José Luis Guerin, Isaki Lacuesta, Ricardo Iscar, Mercedes Alvarez, Xavier Montanyà, Ariadna Pujol, Lupe Pérez et Marc Recha. / As in others European countries, at the end of the 9O's, documentary experiences a new boom in Spain. The Master in Creative documentary of the Pompeu Fabra University takes part to the renewal and is one the main originator. This training center, where a lot of movies are developed, is the origin of a new world of art and promotes the cooperation between producers, creators, technicians and cultural coordinators. In this thesis, we wanted to give an account of the process that considers both local scale (a University) and the global cultural panorama. In a country where "creative documentary" doesn't success in elaborating a tradition, we wanted to question the transmission between filmmakers of different generations in the UPF and, at the same time, the transmission of the concept of "creative documentary", between filmmakers, producers, programm planners. broadcasters and spectators. In these pages, we analyze movies of filmmakers as Jean-Louis Comolli, Joaquin Jorda, José Luis Guerin, lsaki Lacuesta, Ricardo Iscar, Mercedes Alvarez, Xavier Montanyà, Ariadna Pujol, Lupe Pérez and Marc Recha.

Après une présentation générale des cartes planaires, nous définissons les polyèdres en coin, étudiés par Eppstein et Mumford. Nous en venons rapidement à introduire les triangulations en coin, qui sont les cartes duales des squelettes des polyèdres en coin, et en donnons quelques propriétés. Nous proposons un algorithme de réalisation de polyèdres en coin de complexité linéaire. Pour cela, l'étude des triangulations en coin conduit à des problèmes d'énumération. Une méthode classique, connue depuis Tutte, donne le résultat voulu en faisant intervenir la série des nombres de Catalan. La recherche d'une explication combinatoire à la présence des nombres de Catalan a rendu souhaitable l'utilisation d'autres méthodes, fondées sur des découpages et des recollements de morceaux de triangulations en coin. Ainsi apparaît la famille des triangulations en amande, qui est une nouvelle représentation des nombres de Catalan, qui est en bijection directe avec la famille des arbres binaires, et qui complète notre algorithme de réalisation de polyèdres en coin. Nous apportons enfin une conclusion à ces travaux en tentant de généraliser nos méthodes à des cartes dont les faces sont de degré fixé, mais quelconque. / After a general presentation of planar maps, we define corner polyhedra, studied by Eppstein and Mumford. We soon introduce corner triangulations, that are dual maps of the skeletons of corner polyhedra, and we give some properties of them.We offer a linear time algorithm to realize corner polyhedra. For that, the study of corner triangulations leads to enumeration problems. A classic method, known from Tutte, gives the wanted result, making the series of Catalan numbers appearing. The research for a combinatorial explanation of the presence of Catalan numbers induces the use of other methods, based on cuttings and gluings of some parts of corner triangulations. Thus appears the family of almond triangulations, that is a new representation of Catalan numbers, in bijection with the binary trees family, and that completes our corner polyhedra realization algorithm. We eventually give a conclusion to these works, trying to generalize our methods to maps whose faces have an any fixed degree.

This thesis analyzes the role of the news media in the Referendum for Independence in the Spanish autonomous region of Catalonia. More specifically, I seek to shed light on if a newspaper's geographical location or political views result in biased media coverage. Based on communications theory, I argue that news coverage can shape the public's political opinion and attitudes. My research analyzed the reporting of two core newspapers by sampling articles from a major newspaper based in Madrid, El País, and a newspaper based in Catalonia, La Vanguardia. My results suggest that the newspaper's location and distribution had a greater impact on coverage compared to its political and ideological leanings.
