CUBA COMO GEOGRAFIA LITERARIA EN LA NARRATIVA CATALANA CONTEMPORANEA

Sabate-Llobera, Nuria 01 January 2007 (has links)
Since the 1940s, many works of Catalan literature have taken place in Cuba. While anthologies mention the genre, there has been as of yet no thorough examination of the importance of this trend. Starting with the long history of the relationship between Catalonia and Cuba, this dissertation employs a transatlantic approach to understanding the significance of the island to Catalan literature and identity. The Catalan protagonists, through their contact with Cuba, undergo change that is accompanied by a redefinition of both personal and national identity. The thesis is structured by various journeys from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean. In Por el cielo y mandamp;aacute;s allandamp;aacute; (2000), Carme Riera tells the story of a voyage which takes place in the late colonial period and in the early days of the Cuban fight for independence. Chapters from Gent del meu exili: inoblidables (1975) by Teresa Pamies and Records vells, histandamp;ograve;ries noves (1941) by Josep Maria Poblet personify the voices of Catalan Republican exile in Cuba. Habanera (1999) by Angeles Dalmau focuses on the overseas experience of a modern-day tourist. The methodology of this dissertation draws on literary geography, the study and interpretation of writers representations of physical space, and focuses particularly on the role that Cuba plays in redefining the protagonists of the works examined. Theories of historical memory and feminism, as well as concepts related to postcolonialism and cultural geography also contribute to the conclusion that the physical and cultural space of Cuba reshapes the identity of the fictional Catalans who encounter it.

Argentine theatre in twenty-first century Barcelona : cultural exchange and (trans)national identities

Wilson, Anna Elisabeth January 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines the impact of Argentine theatre on Barcelona’s stage culture in the twenty-first century. Catalan theatre is caught up in conflicting cultural discourses that centre on the relation between language, politics and identity, tensions further compounded by globalisation and changing patterns of migration. Although publications in this field demonstrate the complexity of the inter-relationship of theatre to cultural identity (as with Sharon Feldman, In the Eye of the Storm [Bucknell University Press, 2009]; Maria Delgado, ‘Other’ Spanish Theatres [Manchester University Press, 2004]; Lourdes Orozco, Teatro y política en Barcelona (1980-2000) [Asociación de Directores de España, 2007]; Helena Buffery, Shakespeare in Catalan [University of Wales Press, 2007] etc.), there remains a need to articulate Catalan theatre’s relationship with its Hispanic “others” in terms that move beyond the separatism of the language binary. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how the presence of Argentine theatre allows for intercultural encounters that are built around the concept of mutual exchange. By drawing on an extensive range of cultural theory, the thesis sets out to explain both the extent and limitations of this exchange, focussing in on concepts of identity, gender and nation. The thesis is split into three sections: the first engages with existing debates and examines the historical development of cultural and theatre connections between Buenos Aires and Barcelona; the second looks at the aspects of infrastructure which have most clearly helped to facilitate the contemporary link: the Sala Beckett, international festivals, Focus and the Teatre Lliure; the third takes Javier Daulte, Victoria Szpunberg, Rafael Spregelburd and Rodrigo García as four indicative case studies to demonstrate the range of influence and practice. The conclusion examines the legacy of the Argentine-Catalan theatre link, drawing together the insights gained into modes of identification and cultural practices associated with theatre in Barcelona.

Escher's Problem and Numerical Sequences

Palmacci, Matthew Stephen 27 April 2006 (has links)
Counting problems lead naturally to integer sequences. For example if one asks for the number of subsets of an $n$-set, the answer is $2^n$, or the integer sequence $1,~2,~4,~8,~ldots$. Conversely, given an integer sequence, or part of it, one may ask if there is an associated counting problem. There might be several different counting problems that produce the same integer sequence. To illustrate the nature of mathematical research involving integer sequences, we will consider Escher's counting problem and a generalization, as well as counting problems associated with the Catalan numbers, and the Collatz conjecture. We will also discuss the purpose of the On-Line-Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

La Version K (catalane) du Devisement du Monde/ Milione de Marco Polo : recherches et éditions / The K (catalan) Version of the Devisement du Monde/ Milione by Marco Polo : studies and edition

Reginato, Irène 11 March 2016 (has links)
La thèse se termine par la traduction critique en français de la Version K. / The issue of the thesis is the Catalan Version (K) of the Devisement du Monde by Marco Polo. An abbreviated version, K is preserved in a Catalan copy called Kc (Florence, Ricc. 2048), a French translation named Kf (Rome, Vatican Library, Ott. lat. 2207) and an Aragonese translation called Ka (Madrid, Escorial, Z. I. 2). The thesis presents an introduction divided into five chapters. The first chapter contains the description of the manuscripts; the second chapter develops a stemma codicum, identifies the archetype Kx and defines its errors and language. The third chapter focuses on the translation mistakes, which demonstrate that the Catalan version had a Franco-Italian model. The fourth chapter studies K as text summary, highlighting its gaps on the basis of a comparison with the reference version F (Paris, BNF, fr. 1116). The fifth chapter, finally, proposes a localization of K in the general stemma codicum of the work. After the introduction, the thesis presents the edition of the three copies, each one accompanied by a linguistic analysis. The thesis ends with the critical translation, in modern French, of the Catalan Version K.

Parking Functions And Generalized Catalan Numbers

Schumacher, Paul R. 14 January 2010 (has links)
Since their introduction by Konheim and Weiss, parking functions have evolved into objects of surprising combinatorial complexity for their simple definitions. First, we introduce these structures, give a brief history of their development and give a few basic theorems about their structure. Then we examine the internal structures of parking functions, focusing on the distribution of descents and inversions in parking functions. We develop a generalization to the Catalan numbers in order to count subsets of the parking functions. Later, we introduce a generalization to parking functions in the form of k-blocked parking functions, and examine their internal structure. Finally, we expand on the extension to the Catalan numbers, exhibiting examples to explore its internal structure. These results continue the exploration of the deep structures of parking functions and their relationship to other combinatorial objects.
