Att vara man eller kvinna i ett svenskt landslag : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys och diskursanalys av svenska dam- och herrlandslaget i fotboll inom sportjournalistiken / To be a man or woman in a Swedish National Team : A quantitative content analysis and qualitative discourse analysis of the Swedish women's and men's national football team in sports journalismSöderlund, Malin, Strömdahl, Matilda January 2019 (has links)
The sports journalism chose how to produce and allocate the content for the women's and men's Swedish national football teams during a championship. The media mediate an unjustified reality that people perceive as the real reality. They do not reflect the real reality but chose what to mediate and produce. The purpose of the survey is to find out how the gender representation is perceived between the women's and men's national football team during the World and European Championships group play periods in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter. The thesis examines how much attention each national team gets during their championships. Furthermore, we examine what similarities and differences exist in the production of the women's and men's national team. In order to answer the two questions of the study, a combination of two methods is applied. The first question of the study is answered through quantitative content analysis and the second question is answered through a qualitative discourse analysis, which follows up the quantitative method and makes an in-depth analysis of the discourses. The study is based on framing theory, gender theory and media, which indicates that the media possess power in how they allocate and shape their content for men, women and their representations. The results of the survey show that the men's national team is allocated more attention during their championships compared to the women's national team. The result shows that men are over-represented in sports journalism, which confirms the previous research that the study presented. The discourses show that men and women in the national teams are presented differently where the men are usually referred to as a team and a unit while the women are mentioned as individuals and less about the team. The thesis also shows that women are presented in a more negative sense compared to men, where journalism usually takes positive aspects despite adversity for the men. The discourse is also characterized by the fact that the national teams have the same task of representing Sweden but that the women's and men's national team are nevertheless presented differently in that sense. The conclusion is that the Swedish national team is overrepresented in media and that the gender representation distinguishes the national law.

Outside The Cage: The Political Campaign To Destroy Mixed Martial ArtsDoeg, Andrew 01 January 2013 (has links)
This is an early history of Mixed Martial Arts in America. It focuses primarily on the political campaign to ban the sport in the 1990s and the repercussions that campaign had on MMA itself. Furthermore, it examines the censorship of music and video games in the 1990s. The central argument of this work is that the political campaign to ban Mixed Martial Arts was part of a larger political movement to censor violent entertainment. Connections are shown in the actions and rhetoric of politicians who attacked music, video games and the Ultimate Fighting Championship on the grounds that it glorified violence. The political pressure exerted on the sport is largely responsible for the eventual success and widespread acceptance of MMA. The pressure forced the sport to regulate itself and transformed it into something more acceptable to mainstream America

Mediální obraz devíti mistrovství světa v ledním hokeji na československém a českém území v dobovém tisku / Media image of nine ice hockey world championships in the Czechoslovakia and Czech republic in the contemporary pressVelikovská, Tereza January 2015 (has links)
The thesis "Media image of nine ice hockey world championships in the Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in the contemporary press" focuses on reporting on nine ice hockey world championships hosted by the Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in media. This is done by qualitative analysis of articles in the contemporary press in both specialized sports daily or weekly papers and general papers. The goal of this thesis is to prove how the style of reporting changed since the first championship in 1933 through seven decades to the last one in 2004. Apart from analyzing the degree and target of critique and style of reporting, it also focuses on the influence of current political climate and propaganda in the period between world wars, after the World War II, 1968 Russian occupation and shortly after the Velvet revolution. The reporting period was set at one month before the start of each tournament and two weeks after it's end. In case of 1933 and 1938 championships, the thesis analyzes the following papers: Rudé právo, České slovo, Národní politika. In later years: Československý sport, Mladá fronta, Rudé právo, Svobodné slovo (all daily), Stadión and Gól (both weekly). After the Velvet revolution: Sport, Právo, MF Dnes (all daily). The analysis focuses mostly on the content of the reporting.

This dissertation provides a review of the historical relationship between football and Cultural Industry in Brazil focusing on the presence of the Globo Television Network as main exhibitor on Free-to-air TV of the Brazilian Soccer Championship. Analyzes the Globo's relationship with sports broadcasts, with the historical links the Union Cup 1987, the Brazilian Championship in 1997 and the negotiation for the media rights of the Brazilian Championship since 2012. The latter negotiations receive a greater emphasis because they represent a significant change in the process of constitution of the letter of invitation to bidding on behalf of the acting Council for Economic Defense (CADE), the main body of the Brazilian System of Competition Defense establishing a Term Cessation of Conduct to prevent anti-competitive clauses in contracts heretofore existing between Globo and the 13 Club, after a process begun in 1997. This new model results in the decentralization of negotiations, it is considered detrimental to this market. This research uses the theoretical and methodological axis of Political Economy of Communication, through authors like Bolaño (2000; 2004; 2005; 2008), Brittos (2001; 2004; 2005; 2010; 2011) and Mosco (1999; 2009), as well as authors from other theoretical perspectives, as such, Bourdieu (1983; 1996), Marques (2011), Damo (2006; 2011), Hobsbawm (1984), Franco Júnior (2007; 2010) and Wisnik (2008), for analyze the development and ownership of football as merchandise, mostly from the Cultural Industry in order to understand the current way of expanding commercialization of the sport, with a strong presence of audiovisual row as one of its sponsors. The methodological procedures taken as reference for analyzing the empirical object: documents provided by the agencies of the Brazilian System of Competition Defense; news, especially of Placar, Folha de S. Paulo, IG and Globoesporte.com, who treated on the subject; and reports of professionals involved in the case. The process that was attended by a state agency discussing the Free-to-air TV market in Brazil ended as a great example of the existence of market barriers, especially the political-institutional, built by the leader of the oligopoly, the Globo Television Network.

BOARD GOVERNANCE OF WORLD-CLASS ANNUAL SPORT CHAMPIONSHIPS: LEARNING FROM KENTUCKY TO CREATE TOURISM OPPORTUNITIES IN THE BAHAMASBurrows, Elvis V 01 January 2014 (has links)
The economy of The Bahamas relies heavily on leisure visitor tourism (cruise ships, resorts, holiday trips) which leaves the country vulnerable to changes in visitor travel habits. Because the country is so reliant on investments in resorts, casinos and cruise ships, it leaves a wide capacity of other touristic opportunities. One opportunity is sports tourism. The purpose of this study is to analyze the strategic board capability of the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event’s (RK3DE) board governance using the Ferkins and Shilbury (2012) model as the theoretical construct and make recommendations regarding the application of these successful aspects to the governance of world-class annual sport championships in The Bahamas. Members of the RK3DE board were interviewed using specific questions developed from the Ferkins and Shilbury (2012) model. Findings showed the Ferkins and Shilbury (2012) model concepts hold true however remained very broad in its prescriptions. On the other hand, a revised model provides a more specific guide to the necessary attributes and capabilities that need to be in place to run an effective and strategically capable board for world-class annual sport championships.

Collision Detection and Overtaking Using Artificial Potential Fields in Car Racing game TORCS using Multi-Agent based ArchitectureSalman, Muhammad January 2013 (has links)
The Car Racing competition platform is used for evaluating different car control solutions under competitive conditions [1]. These competitions are organized as part of the IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC) and Computational Intelligence and Games Sym-posium (CIG). The goal is to learn and develop a controller for a car in the TORCS open source racing game [2]. Oussama Khatib [3] (1986) introduced Artificial potential fields (APFs) for the first time while looking for new ways to avoid obstacles for manipulators and mobile robots in real time. In car racing games a novel combination of artificial potential fields as the major control paradigm for car controls in a multi-agent system is being used to coordinate control interests in different scenarios [1]. Here we extend the work of Uusitalo and Stefan J. Johansson by introducing effective collision detection, overtaking maneuvers, run time evaluation and detailed analysis of the track using the concept of multi-agent artificial potential fields MAPFs. The results of our extended car controller in terms of lap time, number of damages and position in the race is improved. / We have concluded by implementing a controller that make use of multi agent based artificial potential field approach to achieve the tricky and complex task of collision detection and overtaking while driving in a car racing game with different other controllers as opponents. We exploited the advantages of APFs to the best of our knowledge using laws of physics and discrete mathematics in order to achieve successful overtaking behavior and overcome its drawbacks as being very complex to implement and high memory requirements for time critical applications e.g. car racing games (Section 3.1, RQ1). Dynamic objects in a fast changing environment like a car racing game are likely to collide more often with each other, thus resulting in higher number of damages. Using APFs instead of traditionally used collision avoidance techniques resulted in less number of damages during the race, thus minimizing the lap’s time which in turn contribute to better position in the race as shown in experiment 3 (Section 3.1, RQ2 and Section 6.6). Overtaking maneuvers are complex and tricky and is the major cause of collision among cars both in real life as well as in car racing games, thus the criteria to measure the performance regarding overtaking behavior of different controllers in the race is based on number of damages taken during the race. The comparison between the participating controllers in terms of damages taken during various rounds of the race is analyzed in experiment 3 (Section 3.1, RQ3 and Section 6.6). The results of the quick race along with opponents shows good results on three tracks while having bad performance on the remaining other track. Our controller got 1st position on the CG track 2 while kept 2nd position on CS Speed way 1 and Alpine 1. It had worse performance on wheel 2 which needs to be optimized in the future for better results on this track and other similar complex and tricky tracks. / +46723266771

Média jako zprostředkovatel národního sebevědomí: analýza vítězství československých hokejistů na mistrovství světa 1947 / MediaMareš, Michael January 2011 (has links)
Diploma thesis "Media as an Agent of National Self-Confidence: Analysis of the Victory of the Czechoslovak Ice Hockey Players at the 1947 World Championship" deals with the reflection of the major sport event in the Czechoslovak media and how this reflection inspired the audience. The goal of this diploma thesis is to describe the dependance between the media coverage and the national self-confidence, which results from the national identity. Therefore, I focused on the chosen newspaper titles to analyze the content they produced during the 1947 Ice Hockey World Championship. I defined a hypothesis, based on observation and scholarly literature, that the media used the coverage to strengthen the national self-confidence and redefine the national identity. My second hypothesis was the idea, that this kind of coverage led to an active response among the audience. Before I started analyzing the three chosen titles (Lidova demokracie, Rude Pravo, Prace), I delivered complex structure of theoretical concepts, describing the influence media have towards the audience and also reasons why the members of the audience use media in their everyday life. I also focused on the historical and political context, as well as the media landscape that shaped the content of that time. I conducted the analysis and...
