Channeling charisma: leadership, community and ritual of a Catholic charismatic prayer group in the United StatesWu, Keping January 2007 (has links)
This ethnographic study examines the organizational structure, formation of community and ritual performance of a Catholic charismatic prayer group in the United States. Heavily influenced by the Protestant Pentecostal movement, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) began as a grassroots movement among the Catholic laity
in the late 1960s and proposed a personal connection with God through "baptism in the Holy Spirit" and reception of "charisms," spiritual gifts, such as glossolalia (speaking in
tongues), healing and prophesying. Earlier studies suggested that such groups would fade out due to the inherent tension with Catholic institutions. Nevertheless, this dissertation presents the case study of a rapidly growing Catholic charismatic group at the suburbs of Boston, with a charismatic leader who is also a priest.
The research methods include participant observation of all the meetings, retreats, and rituals, formal and informal interviews of the leader, his clerical associates and
members, and review of the groups' publications and the leader's own radio program, during a period of twenty months from December 2001 to August 2003. I have also visited and interviewed priests and lay people of non-charismatic Catholic churches and two Protestant Pentecostal churches in the greater Boston area.
Building upon Max Weber's theory of charisma, this dissertation examines how the charismatic leader maximizes his authority by integrating both personal and institutional charisma. The vertical ties the community members cultivate with the leader and the horizontal ties they establish among themselves through narratives of conversion and healing experience reinforce group cohesion and resilience. By analyzing ritual language and bodily movement, this study argues that ritual is a communication system
in which the charisma of the leader and the religious experience of the followers are
embodied.
This study of the actual workings of a charismatic group within the hierarchical structure of the church not only advances the relationship between charisma and
institution beyond the Weberian paradigm but also situates the case study of charismatic leadership within the social and historical context of American culture at large.

Charismatická autorita: metodologické přístupy ke studiu nových náboženských hnutí / Charismatic Authority: Methodological Approaches in New Religious Movements StudiesExnerová, Helena January 2016 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the definition of terms charisma and charismatic authority and its application in new religious movements (NRMs) studies. The first part of the thesis is rather generally oriented and provides a commentary review of the most famous approaches to charisma. In the end, the discussion about various theories of charisma results in its definition from the perspective of Religious Studies. This definition is applied in the second part of this paper afterwards. Second part introduces intricate history of term NRMs and its semantics including sociological typology. Furthermore, it is argued that NRMs are charismatic movements and the author suggests a model of charismatisation degree inside NRMs. These claims head towards the deconstruction of relationship between charismatic leader and his followers. The inner dynamics of charismatisation process is stressed. By referring to problematics of origin, constitution and maintaining charisma within NRMs, this thesis proves that charisma is a relatively common, social and dialectical phenomenon.

The influence of Moses' charismatic leadership on the incipient stages of Israel's religion.09 January 2008 (has links)
This study is about Moses, charismatic leadership, and the beginnings of Israel's religion. At a time when traditional and time-honoured customs were revered and preserved, but proved inadequate, Moses, a charismatically endowed leader, arose and overthrew the old order, and in its place proffered the new in the form of mono-Yahwism, which ultimately became the national Israelite religion. This claim is analysed and discussed in four chapters. Chapter 1 is a preliminary to the thesis and deals with the reason for, and aim of this study, methodological considerations, and has a section presenting, very briefly, the debate on the historicity of Moses. Chapter 2 was composed using literary principles and narrative literature in the book of Exodus, to glean a description of the character of Moses. The next two chapters form the main thrust of this study. Chapter 3 examined Weber's typology of leadership, providing the groundwork for the understanding and contextualization of charismatic leadership. The aim of chapter 4 was to show the characteristics of the charismatic leader, Moses, and how they were instrumental in his formulation of mono-Yahwism. The main points discussed were: Moses' personality, and the social context as a source of his charismatic leadership; the recognition of the charismatic leader and his message; the importance of charisma in Moses' achievements; and some factors that drive the charismatic person. The main methodological thrust is socio-religious, within which Max Weber's interpretative framework of charismatic leadership is employed. The work shows that Moses has the traits of a charismatic leader, and that, through the effect of his personality, he influenced the beginnings of Israelite religion. / Prof. J.H. Coetzee

Variations on charisma : Shakespeare's saintly, villain, and lustful leadersHannachi, Madiha 08 1900 (has links)
Mots clés: le charisme, la rhétorique, l'agence morale, resignification, William Shakespeare / Variations on Charisma: Shakespeare’s Saintly, Villain, and Lustful Leaders is an investigation of the mechanisms of charismatic leadership in Shakespeare’s Henry V, Richard III, and Antony and Cleopatra respectively. It explores certain tools, such as rhetoric, irony, and resignification, which allow the leaders to gain the followers’ love, recognition, and even awe. This thesis will not deal with the essence of charisma as such but rather with the techniques of charismatic leadership.
In the first chapter, I have studied the character of King Harry in three different aspects: as a military leader, as a spiritual leader, and as a political leader. Among the techniques of charismatic leadership which Henry V deploys to gain his followers’ love and devotion is rhetoric. The ability to deliver the right discourse in the right conjuncture and to persuade the followers even in the moments of hardship forms his key strength as a central figure in the play.
The second chapter deals with Richard III’s charismatic leadership which is assessed ethically because it is gained through murder. I have tried to examine the possible relations that might exist between charisma and moral agency. In this chapter, I have raised questions about the extent to which charisma is ethical and how a leader, who usurpes power via murder, is charismatic. One technique which reinforces Richard’s charismatic leadership is irony. Richard III deploys irony to gain the audience’s complicity.
In the third chapter, the focus is on the character of Cleopatra. The question raised in the chapter concerns the relationship between charisma and the struggle for an oriental feminine identity. Cleopatra’s sexual politics is also at the heart of my study because it is revisited and resignified by Shakespeare in a way that highlights Cleopatra’s charismatic qualities.
Key words: charisma, rhetoric, moral agency, resignification, William Shakespeare

1934 e no exercício
[en] The focus of this study is to analyze Pedro Ernesto

Our hypothesis suggests

the tactics used during
the denominated "Estado Novo" (The new State). Most of the

working as major in this equivalent period, he became one
of the firsts examples

certainly, the prosecutions that he suffered during the

didn`t meant the end of
the powerful of his public image; the symbolic consensuses

Previous issue date: 2007-08-29 / This research, assumed that religion supports and legitimates black s and poor
people s power belonging to inferior social classes over privileged white society. Was
written on purpose to analyze how religion determines and establishes the
relationship of power in the Angel Ismael Spiritualistic Center (Voodoo). The main
concepts used were: religion as answer to human anxieties; charisma as
supernatural talents; and power as charismatic domination. It was put in perspective
that religion has as function the legitimization of power and maintenance of reality. It
contributes to the construction of the world when when it legitimates social
institutions through sacred thought. Religion can influence society through
charismatic power, which makes human activities be understood as supernatural
facts. In Voodoo, the charismatic leader, witch-doctor, acts on behalf of the divinities.
Thus he maintains his followers under his lash. In the Angel Ismael Spiritualistic
Center, which was analyzed in this research, it can be noticed this relationship of
power and obedience among the leader and his followers. The latter submit to such
an obedience in duty to the divinities. Thus it is observed that the relationship of
power invoked by the charismatic is one way of making religion assure its strength
before society.

Starting with the assumption that eating out reveals a costume, as analyzed by Max Weber, or taste, as described by Talcott Parsons, or a habitus, as defined by Pierre Bourdieu, is about identifying it as a ritual that is able to lend charisma to the social class that practices it (Weber, Parsons) / Esta pesquisa busca identificar, por meio do consumo no mercado de alimentação fora do lar, como se distribuem as escolhas dos consumidores entre a tipologia definida por aqueles que fazem a oferta dos serviços e se estas escolhas revelam, de um lado, habitus de classe, e, de outro, manifestam expectativas de distinção social. Myten om det karismatiska ledarskapet / The myth of the charismatic leadershipJoachim, Rogulla January 2013 (has links)
This Bachelor thesis takes a closer look at the charismatic leadership that often is claimed to be a trait that some people are born with. It is often said that people like Gandhi, Barack Obama and Olof Palme had this particular trait. A trait that would make people follow the leader willingly despite themselves and cater to his or her every whim. This thesis aims to problematize this and see if charisma as a personal trait really is true. With the help of the father of charisma, Max Weber, and research about leadership and charisma, this paper draws a model and tries to understand if charismatic leadership is more depended on these three components; The leader, the followers and the situation. This model is then applied to Steve Jobs, famous to be a charismatic person, and his career to try to show that charisma is not a personal trait. The thesis concludes that charisma is built on these three components and that charisma is a part of a process, which makes it come alive and grow.
