Development of sour cherry generative organs and formation of spring frost resistance / Paprastosios vyšnios generatyvinių organų raida ir atsparumo pavasario šalnoms formavimasisStepulaitienė, Inga 18 December 2013 (has links)
Sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L. (sin. Cerasus vulgaris Mill., Prunus vulgaris Schur)) is widely grown stonefruit tree in Lithuania.
Productivity of sour cherry orchard depends on many tightly related factors. It's know that negative temperature and spring frosts are important factors determinating plant productivity. These factors must be considered in plant breeding.
Risks of extreme temperatures, humidity deficiency and spring frosts increases due to climate change. Plant reaction to climate change depends on plant species, cultivar and on biotic or abiotic factors. Spring starts earlier and suddenly during past years, thus vegetation of cherries starts earlier. However, probability of plant damage to spring frosts increases due to earlier vegetation, because plants are susceptible to negative temperatures due to loss of the predictive and consequential (secondary) dormancy. The aim of the research was to evaluate DNA polymorphism of sour cherry cultivars with different resistance to spring frosts, to characterize nature of phenological phase changes, to evaluate biochemical characteristics of sour cherry resistance to spring frosts formation by analysis of changes in carbohydrate amount and composition in generative organs and fruit ovaries at different phenological phases, and to evaluate changes in gene expression levels of galactinol synthase and raffinose synthase during flower development. It was established, that specific rhythm of phenological development is... [to full text] / Paprastoji vyšnia (Prunus cerasus L. (sin.
E-commerce opportunities for the Ficksburg Cherry Festival (2012)Van Lille, Adele 08 May 2014 (has links)
A website with a good e-commerce design will positively influence a customer’s attitude, strengthen the trust of the customers towards the organisation, increase the satisfaction of the customer, draw consumers, and bring forth purchases/repeat purchases from them. The purpose of this study was to determine viable e-commerce opportunities for the Ficksburg Cherry Festival website. The study endeavoured to ascertain how the Ficksburg Cherry Festival could improve its website by identifying e-commerce opportunities for the Ficksburg Cherry Festival website. In this study a non-random self-administered survey approach was used where attendees were intercepted at the venue of the Ficksburg Cherry Festival and the exhibitors in their stalls. The existing Ficksburg Cherry Festival website was analysed for e-commerce features that are present and opportunities for further implementation of e-commerce features were identified with help from the attendees and exhibitors. The findings of this study presented a demographic profile and attendance characteristics of both the attendees and exhibitors, which the management team of the Ficksburg Cherry Festival can use to better market the festival using traditional and online communication for both attendees and exhibitors. The recommendations will assist the management of the festival to improve the website and to progress from a straightforward information-only website to a fully-developed e-commerce site, with positive effects for all the stakeholders. Similar South African festivals could find the research findings and recommendations of value for their own website development as well. / Business Management / M. Com. (Business Management)

Uso de lodo de esgoto como fonte alternativa de nitrogênio para o cultivo do tomateiro cereja (Lycopersicum esculentum sp.) / USE OF SEWAGE SLUDGE AS AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE OF NITROGEN FOR CHERRY TOMATO (LYCOPERSICON ESCULENTUM SP.)Dantas, Jolly Dayanne de Melo 29 April 2010 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The wastewater treatment is necessary to reduce the impact of river pollution in large cities. This treatment is generated a large amount of organic matter decanted, called sludge. In order to make use of organic waste and consolidate a model of sustainable agriculture, that has been employing throughout the world, the use of sewage sludge on farmlands. Organic fertilization has been commonly practiced as a source of nutrients, among them nitrogen, to attend the nutritional needs of tomato. This study evaluates the effectiveness of using sewage sludge by Station Treatment of Housing Journalist Orlando Dantas, from Companhia de Saneamento de Sergipe - DESO that is considered a domestic sewage, as a source of nitrogen for growth and yield of tomato cherry on Cambisoil, traditionally present in farmlands of Sergipe, and more studying the implications of its use in the physiology of tomato. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse located in the Biology Department (UFS), São Cristóvão / SE. The experimental design was completely randomized design with five treatments and five replications and two plants. The treatments were a combination of soil and increasing
dosages of sewage sludge as the amount of available nitrogen in sewage sludge as also by the amount of N recommended for growing tomatoes. The treatments were T1: mineral fertilization, T2: no fertilization, T3: ½ sludge dose, T4: 2.0 sludge dose, T5: 4,0 sludge dose, considering the quantity of avalaible nitrogen on sludge, and also, N recommended to tomato cultivation. The growth of plants were determined by dry mass of roots and shoots of plants, number and fruit weight, root length. Variables such as net photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E) and internal CO2
concentration (Ci) were made when the plants started flowering. There was greater root growth at T2 if compared to other treatments. For root, leaf, stem, shoot and total dry
weight there were beneficial effect of sludge in relation to control. Regarding the number of fruit and tomato production, they were higher when there was organic fertilization, demonstrated the capacity of replaceable of this residue as a mineral fertilizer. There was effect in the variables of stomatal conductance and net photosynthesis at the rate of 2.0 mg dm-3 sludge showed the best response. As to the internal carbon concentration in leaves and photosynthesis rate, these parameters had an inversely proportional relationship and these variables are associated to photosynthesis
activity. The case study leads us to consider a dose of 2.0 mg dm-3 the best for cherry tomato under greenhouse conditions. There was effect in the variables of stomatal

Previous issue date: 2008-02-01 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / A new genus and a new species of Phyllocoptini Eriophyidae, Shrekin graviolae Britto and Navia, from Annona muricata L., and a Nothopodini Eriophyidae, Cosella decorata Britto and Navia, from the Malpighia emarginata Sess and Moc. were described from females and males. Furthermore, Aceria n.sp., an Aceriini Eriophyidae from Caesalpinia echinata Lam. with a complex life cycle is described. Observations on the biology of the last species are presented. Whole life cycle develops under patches of webbings built by the deutogyne on the surface of the leaves. The immature stages development for deutogynes lasts 16-17 days, at 26°C, 12h photophase and 60% relative humidity. Periods of egg incubation, larval and nymphal stages were 5-6, 6-7 and 5-6 days, respectively. Individual "nest" sizes ranged from 0.07-3.2 mm2 and their relative numbers of females was always 75-76% of deutogynes and 24-25% of protogynes. This is the first case of a deuterogynous eriophyoid mite with two forms of males from the tropics.
