This paper work develops itself from the following hypothesis: the TV show SuperNanny can be understood as a mediation of the situation of uncertainty around relationships between adults and children. This mediation is carried out by the schematization of the current progressive rationalization of the child care converging to the rationalization of the entire society which combines both psychopedagogical and administrative (home management) languages in a kind of reality show known as self-improvement. Thus this paper work attempts to recover the contemporary childhood problematic and the cultural responding to it. By means of resources provided by nowadays cultural tendencies reality shows and helpparent manuals SuperNanny tries to connect to its audience acting as a practical and mental orientation for the nowadays difficulties relatives to the understanding of the childhood place in our culture.

The type of interaction that occurs between parents and children is a reflection of the kind of parental educational styles. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of maternal parenting styles and styles of food young children adopted by adolescent and adult mothers in relation to the eating habits of their children during the complementary feeding period. The study was comparative and involves a group of adolescent mothers between the age of 15 and 19, and a group of adult mothers, aged 24 and 44, responsible for the care of children between nine and 24 months in three Health Units family of Recife. The participants answered a to evaluate the socioeconomic conditions of the family, inventory of styles and parenting practices, form styles maternal feeding young children and evaluation of children's eating practices. We observed that teenage mothers had a higher frequency of risk parenting when compared to adult mothers. And these offer their children more food group V (sugars, sweets, oils and fats) (p = 0.03). When considering the child's age, they were more neglectful (p = 0.05) with less than 18 months and reported greater physical abuse with the largest of this age (p = 0.03). We observed trend of adolescent mothers adopt nonresponsive styles of feeding the young child. When considering the age of the child, adolescent mothers were had a more often responsive style with older children (p = <0.01) and passive style with less than 18 months (p = 0.04). Among mothers who had responsive style food, adolescents offered more frequently food group V (p = 0.03), the same happened with the authoritarian and passive style. The results suggest that it is important to know the parental styles and maternal style of feeding the children of teenage mothers and relate them with the eating practices of their children in complementary feeding period.

What are the conditions in which educators and caregivers of children agedc between zero and six fulfill their roles? What aspects of employment and organization of work tell us about the working relationships in day care centers planned and supported by the state? In order to answer these questions, working relationships is understood to mean power relations, and the working process in the field of early childhood care and education not only mediated by institutional arrangements, but also by the knowledge that provides the foundations for that work. The research focuses on the work in the field of early childhood care and education in the public sector carried out in a municipal day care center located in an area on the periphery of Campinas, between 2003 and 2006, and aims at analyzing the working conditions and relationships for caregivers and teachers. Teachers and caregivers (mostly women) from the selected day care center for the research were asked how they choose their paths or build their careers, and about the representations they made of jobs in education. Teachers¿ paths are distinguished from caregivers¿ by formal education, recruitment, selection and social background. The research had an interest in comprehending those differences, as well as the way working relationships express power relations, hierarchies, and inequalities between workers of a day care center are established. The heterogeneous insertion of professionals in day care centers ¿ such as caregivers and teachers ¿ demanded an understanding of the specifics about each job. How the distinct organization forms of work have contributed to different education and qualification requirements, at the same time show power relations overlapped with gender relations, the construction of knowledge, and professional expertise. This analysis also intended to reveal the representations teachers and caregivers make other than those expressed in educational policy and statistics. With that in mind, the analytical references were framed as from the theory of power formulated by Norbert Elias. Since analyses of working conditions and relationships cannot be dissociated from the discussion about the sexual division of work and gender social relations, it was observed diverse and contradictory social practices conversing with the methodology proposals presented by Daniele Kergoat and Helena Hirata. The research is inserted into the possibilities and contributions to the debate over working relationships in educational institutions, especially in those for early childhood care and education / Doutorado / Educação, Sociedade, Politica e Cultura / Doutor em Educação

Avaliação da atenção às crianças menores de um ano na Estratégia Saúde da Família em um município da Bahia, sob a ótica dos cuidadores / Evaluation of care for children under one year in the Family Health Strategy in a municipality of Bahia, from the perspective of caregiversJanaina Carvalho Braz 04 December 2012 (has links)
Public policies on childcare in Brazil have been enhanced to promote quality on comprehensive care. This study aimed to evaluate the presence and extent of the attributes of the Primary Health Care (PHC) and the degree of user affiliation in Family Health Strategy (FHS) from the perspective of caregivers with the care provided to children under one year of age. This is a quantitative, cross-sectional study which data were collected using Primary Care Assessment Tool (PCATool). We interviewed 271 caregivers whose children belong to the areas of 13 family health teams in the urban area of Vitoria da Conquista - BA. The scores were assigned to 10 dimensions of APS. The results revealed high scores for only four dimensions: degree of affiliation, first contact access (use of service), longitudinality and coordination (information system). Other dimensions had low score values such as: first contact access (accessibility), coordination (integrated care), comprehensiveness (services available and services provided), and family and community orientation. By assessing the dimensions together we found low values for the essential and general scores. We conclude that despite FHS has being a preferred scenario for the actions of health promotion and disease prevention and gateway to health services FHS has not been attained the child care with emphasis on comprehensive care

Construindo campos de experiências: creche, arte contemporânea e a poética das crianças de 0 a 3 anos / Building experiences fields: child care, contemporary crt and poetics of children aged 0 to 3 yearsDenise Nalini 21 September 2015 (has links)
This thesis involves the research of the teacher\'s dialogues within ways of making contemporary art and the poetic content of the artists, and how they could transform their practice in the classroom, becoming proponents, investigators and creators of fields of experience for children between 0-3 years of age. In order to mark out and monitor the process of transforming teachers established as a reference model a theoretical network consists of the research and studies on Contemporary Art held by Archer (2008), Duve ( 2012) , Favaretto (2008 ), Rancière (2003 ) Matos (2009 ), in addition to knowledge developed by Vygotsky (1989 ), Piaget (1987) and Winnicott (1975 ) regarding the development and learning of children and also research on teacher education in Alarcão (1999 ), Schon (2000 ) Weisz (1999) and Formosinho (2009 ). The materials analyzed were built with the group of teachers during the training process, they are: accomplished diagnoses and shared with teachers, meeting summaries, activities sequences with photographs and photographic documentation produced for the exhibition held at CEU Parelheiros in November 2013 and an exhibition of the proposals made by the teachers with the children.

Canadian Healthy After School Environments (CHASE): Validity and Reliability StudyLobsinger, Tosha 01 May 2013 (has links)
The present study aimed to assess the current affordances for physical activity (PA) and healthy eating (HE) in after-school child care. The primary purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable online survey to assess the affordance of PA and HE in Canadian after-school childcare settings. A two-stage instrument validation procedure was implemented. Stage 1 was an instrument review (n=5) to create the Canadian Healthy After School Environments (CHASE) survey and an expert review (n=7) to establish logical validity of its items and components. Stage 2 was a comparison of the self-administered CHASE survey with existing observation tools to establish concurrent validity and test retest to establish its reliability in 20 after-school child care programs on Vancouver Island (n=20). Observation tools included the Environment and Policy Assessment and Observation (EPAO), an audit of the facility environment, staff behaviours, and snacks and activities observed, and the Physical Activity Observation Recording Sheet (PAORS), a scan of the physical activity intensity and facilitation of each child during each minute of activity. Pearson correlations were calculated for subscales and items on CHASE, EPAO and PAORS to establish validity. Percent agreement and intra-class correlations (ICCs) between CHASE T1 and T2 scores were calculated to establish reliability. The results indicated that CHASE T1 Social HE Environment subscale significantly correlated with 5 objective measures: EPAO-measured proportion of time in PA (r=0.715, p<.001); total PA minutes (r=0.680, p=.001); total outdoor PA (r=0.521, p=.018); total sedentary behaviour (r=-0.580, p=.009); and PAORS-measured total PA minutes (r=0.631, p=.003). CHASE T1 HE Total subscale also significantly correlated with these objective measures: EPAO-measured proportion of time in PA (r=0.450, p=.047); total PA minutes (r=0.565, p=.009); total outdoor PA (r=0.517, p=.020); total sedentary behaviour (r=-0.577, p=.010); and PAORS-measured total PA minutes (r=0.514, p=.020). Other significant correlations were found between EPAO total outdoor PA and CHASE T1 Physical HE Environment subscale (r=0.501, p=.024), as well as EPAO total minutes of television and CHASE T1 PA Practices subscale (r=-0.459, p=.042). Other CHASE subscales were not significantly correlated with objective PA measures. Significant correlations between CHASE and EPAO subscales were found for Social PA Environment (r=0.664, p=.001) and HE Total (r=0.553, p=.040). The remaining correlations between CHASE and EPAO subscales were not significant. ICCs indicated strong reliability for all CHASE subscales, excluding Social PA Environment, Social HE Environment, PA Practices. ICCs indicated strong reliability for all CHASE sections, excluding HE Environment and Policies. Average percent agreement calculations indicated high reliability for CHASE Environment Total (Mean=84.42, SD=7.02), PA Total (Mean=75.43, SD=10.29), HE Total (Mean=83.70, SD=3.42) and Overall Total section scores (Mean= 81.18, SD=5.56). The CHASE survey has the potential to increase the feasibility of assessing the physical activity and healthy eating environment in after-school child-care programs in many sites across Canada. These findings highlight that it is reliable and that some of the subscales and items have concurrent validity. More work has to be done to explore why certain subscales and items lacked validity and to compare CHASE to directly measured physical activity using accelerometers. / Graduate / 0573 / 0570 / 0680 / toshalobsinger@me.com

Managing children with mental health disorders in child and youth care centresAllers, Yolande 19 July 2012 (has links)
M.A. / A child that is mentally healthy develops psychologically, emotionally, creatively, intellectually and spiritually (Dwivedi & Harper, 2004). Therefore the researcher is of the opinion that the mental health of children is integral in successful development. It was however observed that there are challenges associated with providing for the needs of children with mental health problems. Often attributed to a lack of knowledge, child care workers, social workers and other staff appear to not have the necessary skills, knowledge and resources to deal appropriately with children with mental health problems in child and youth care centres. This study therefore investigates the identified gap in service delivery, and what could be done to minimise it. It attempts to explore the characteristics of a child with a mental health problem, what their emanating needs are, and what guidelines exist that may help to provide for the identified needs. In exploring these guidelines, the roles of different role-players involved on different ecosystemic levels, are also explored. This exploration is conducted by utilising qualitative research methods only. A literature study firstly explores relevant social work, mental health, psychiatric and legislative literature. Secondly, focus groups are conducted with key role-players that work with children with mental health problems. These two sources provide the researcher with information pertaining to the objectives and goal of this research study. The ultimate goal of this study is to provide a management programme to mainstream and specialised child and youth care centres, on how to care optimally for children with mental health problems. When this goal is achieved, the field of social work amid children will benefit tremendously. Not only can such a programme assist in the enhancement of the mental health of children in child and youth care centres, but it may provide the foundation for future development in this.

Prevalence and Determinants of Overweight and Obesity in Preschoolers in Miami-Dade CountyChang, Catherina 30 March 2017 (has links)
Background: The prevalence of childhood overweight in the United States continues to be a national public health problem. The child care and household environments play an important role in the nutrition, physical activity, and screen-time behaviors of preschoolers. Aims: This dissertation aimed to (1) estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity in 3-5 year old children enrolled in child care centers in Miami-Dade County; (2) identify early life, dietary, and screen-time risk factors of overweight, and (3) assess child care centers' level of adherence to nutrition, physical activity, and screen-time regulations by center socioeconomic location (SEP). Methods: A total of 366 children ages 3-5 years old from 34 child care centers participated in the study. Caregivers completed a questionnaire on socioeconomic, early life, dietary, and screen-time factors. We measured children's heights and weights. Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were used to examine the association between child overweight and determinants. Results: the prevalence of overweight was 29.8% in this sample. The middle-SEP group had the highest prevalence of overweight (35.3%) when compared to low and high-SEP groups. Being Hispanic was associated with a three-fold risk of overweight/ obesity (AOR: 2.91, 95% CI 1.36, 6.21). Lack of daily fruit consumption increased the risk of overweight in Hispanic children. Middle-SEP children reported lowest consumption of fruits and vegetables. There were significant differences in breastfeeding practices by ethnicity and SEP. Assessment of child care practices resulted in all child care centers adhering to two-hour screen-time regulation for children older than 2-years old. Low and middle SEP centers fared better in serving of fruits , vegetables, and low fat/ fat free milk. The centers had incorporated quite and active play in their routines. Conclusions: This is the first study to examine prevalence by SEP in Miami-Dade County. Findings highlight opportunities for improvement in early life nutrition, as well as dietary and screen-time practices in the household and child care environments.

An evaluation of the role of child and youth care centres in the implementation of South Africa’s children’s actAgere, Leonard Munyaradzi January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the role played by CYCCs to provide support and protection to children who have been found to be in need of care, according to the criteria given in the Children’s Act No. 38/2005 as amended. The study made use of a qualitative approach and the research design was provided by the case study. Data was gathered by means of semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. The most important findings to emerge from the study were that the factors which affect the operation of CYCCs are either institutional, or else challenges arising from issues pertaining to infrastructure and human resources. However, it was also acknowledged that, despite the challenges which affect their ability to provide their services to young people, the CYCCs had also made progressive steps to halt the suppression of the fundamental rights of children. It has been recommended that the government should apply comprehensive funding to the objectives of the Children’s Act, which would entail increasing the subsidies to CYCCs. It has also been recommended that the Policy on Financial Rewards should call for the same benefits and salary scales to apply for professional staff working in the government and to those working in the CYCCs. The repercussions from failing to adjust to these recommendations will inevitably lead to the employment of a remedial model of care.
