Perceptions et besoins du personnel des services de garde en milieu scolaire québécois en lien avec le contexte du repas à l’école et la promotion de saines habitudes alimentairesMeunier, Véronique 03 1900 (has links)
Contexte: Depuis 1985, l’Association des services de garde en milieu scolaire du Québec (ASGEMSQ) a pour principale mission de veiller à l’amélioration de la qualité des services de garde des écoles québécoises afin que chaque enfant puisse évoluer dans un milieu de qualité, respectueux de son bien-être et de son développement. En partenariat avec Québec en forme, l’ASGEMSQ joint sa voix au vaste mouvement d’initiatives favorisant l’adoption de saines habitudes de vie et a amorcé des actions menant au développement d'un environnement favorable à une saine alimentation et à l'activité physique dans les services de garde en milieu scolaire. À cette fin, les responsables des services de garde en milieu scolaire y exercent un rôle déterminant.
Objectif: Les objectifs principaux de ce mémoire sont d’étudier des perceptions des responsables des services de garde en milieu scolaire du Québec à l’égard du contexte des repas et des facteurs liés à son déroulement ainsi que d'identifier leurs besoins de formation en nutrition.
Méthodologie: À l’automne 2014, un sondage électronique fut envoyé aux 1 655 responsables des services de garde en milieu scolaire du Québec. Des statistiques descriptives et des tests de chi-carré furent menés (SPSS, version 17.01).
Résultats: Un total de 624 réponses fut analysé, donnant un taux de réponse de 38%. Le contexte du repas semble être un moment relativement agréable pour la majorité des enfants et du personnel éducateur. Différents obstacles ont une relation statistiquement significative avec la perception générale du contexte du repas comme étant agréable pour la majorité des enfants tels que le non-respect des consignes de la part des parents à l’égard du contenu de la boîte à lunch, le rythme personnel selon lequel les enfants s’alimentent, la nécessité d’encadrer adéquatement des enfants ayant des besoins spéciaux, le non-respect du code de vie de l’école par les enfants, et l’attitude générale du personnel. Les résultats démontrent un intérêt considérable de la part du personnel éducateur pour différentes formations en nutrition. De plus, l'intérêt pour certains thèmes de formation a une relation statistiquement significative avec certains obstacles liés au bon déroulement du repas et certaines caractéristiques du milieu.
Conclusion: Les données confirment le besoin d’outiller la main d’œuvre et de maintenir des partenariats avec l’école et les parents pour que le repas en milieu scolaire soit agréable. Le service de garde en milieu scolaire primaire est un milieu à documenter. Il constitue un milieu de vie fréquenté quotidiennement par la majorité des enfants. Avec la collaboration des responsables des services, des directions d’école et des parents, des interventions peuvent être planifiées pour en faire un milieu propice à l’adoption de saines habitudes de vie. Ce portrait des contextes de repas dans les écoles primaires du Québec s’inscrit dans la volonté de comprendre les environnements alimentaires pour en faire des milieux favorables à l’adoption de saines habitudes de vie. / Context: Since 1985, the main objective of the Association des services de garde en milieu scolaire du Québec (ASGEMSQ) has been to improve the quality of child care services in schools so that each child could develop in an environment that contributes to its well-being and growth. In partnership with Québec en forme, ASGEMSQ joined a national movement searching to promote healthy lifestyles and initiated actions leading to the development of environment conductive to healthy eating and physical activities in school child care services. To this end, child care providers definitively play a decisive role.
Objective: The main objectives of this research are to study the perceptions of school-age child care providers in Quebec with regards to the meal period and the factors that may impair its development, as well as to identify their training needs in nutrition.
Methodology: During fall 2014, an electronic survey was sent to 1655 child care providers from Quebec schools. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were conducted (SPSS, version 17.01).
Results: In total, 624 responses were obtained, a 38% response rate. The meal context appears to be a relatively pleasant moment for the majority of children and educators. Different obstacles had statistically significant relationship with the perception of the meal context as being enjoyable for the majority of children, namely failure from parents to comply with instructions regarding lunch box content, children personal eating pace, the need to appropriately support children with special needs, non-compliance to the school code of conduct and the general attitude of the school's staff. The results show considerable interest from child care providers in various nutrition training activities. Moreover, specific training themes have a statistically significant relationship with obstacles related to a favorable meal context and to certain characteristics of the environment likely to impact them.
Conclusion: The data confirm training needs and the importance to support partnerships with school and parents so that the meal context represents enjoyable moments. Elementary school day care is an environment to be documented. It constitutes a living environment that a majority of children experiment on a daily base. In collaboration with child-care center managers, school principals and parents, actions can be planned to create environments that support the adoption of healthy lifestyles. This transversal study conducted in Quebec's elementary schools contributed to the study on the importance of the environments on overall healthy lifestyles.

Supporting orphaned learners through the school based support team : a case studyNaidoo, Ceilan Vailu 13 May 2014 (has links)
M. Ed. (Educational and Learning Support) / Society has never before experienced a human tragedy of the magnitude caused by the orphan crisis. Life for the estimated 4 million orphans in sub-Saharan Africa is often desperate where children attempt to care for themselves and each other without adequate adult· support. Orphaned children are not only traumatized by the loss of their parents, they then also lack adult guidance during crucial developmental stages of their lives, and educational concerns are usually neglected. The social costs that emerge are juvenile crime, reduced educational levels, unskilled workers and a general burden on the state. With the introduction of the School Based Support Teams (SBST) in an attempt to further the implementation of inclusive education, schools have become aware of the need to support all learners in their community, including orphans. This study investigated the nature of the role played by the SBST of a primary school in their endeavours to support orphaned learners. During their work with the orphans, the SBST encountered many challenges that emerged as diverse needs of the children were revealed.Initially, the focus was on meeting lower order needs such as food, clothing, shelter and school equipment. In meeting these needsthe SBST embraced a position of collaboration with local businesses and child welfare organisations in providing the necessary resources. Help was also given in the planting of a vegetable garden, with an irrigation system which was tilled by volunteers from the parent community. School uniforms were provided by the Department of Social Development and the Rotary club. With time however, the SBST, started taking an additional responsibility, such as obtaining identity documents, applying for child grants and arranging for social worker involvement in the management of foster parents and custody. Caregivers and foster parents were approached and aided in their applications for exemption from paying school fees and close collaboration with custody courts was maintained. Working more deeply with the orphans, higher order needs emerged regarding grieVing for lost parents, the need to re-establish social groups and family ties, and the need for spiritual guidance and a sense of hope for the future. Responding to this additional challenge the SBST established a link with the local church to provide counselling support for the orphans. The schools guidance department conducted a workshop for the teachers on basic counselling and bereavement counselling which serve to empower the staff to deal with the orphans' emotional trauma on a daily basis. Since the orphaned learners were now being physically and emotionally supported, learning problems emerged due to their previous interruptions in schooling. The SBST called on the expertise of remedially trained teachers to provide extra classes and supervise homework for these learners in an attempt to address their scholastic backlog. Selected orphans were loaned solar powered reading lamps for use at home where there is no electricity. Orphaned learners were also encouraged to participate in the school's sporting and extra-mural programme and the necessary sport gear and arrangements were facilitated by the SBST. As the nature of the SBST's involvement deepened, a sub-committee was established, the welfare portfolio, whose sole responsibility was the well-being of the school's orphans. In managing the growing orphan population in the school, they compiled a database of the orphans in the school detailing their specific problems, needs, home circumstances and the actions required by the school in supporting each child's individual needs. A workshop was conducted for the foster parents and caregivers on budgeting and using the child care grants wisely for the orphans. Since it was revealed that some caregivers were abusing the funds on alcohol and neglecting the orphans in their care. The welfare committee also negotiated half price transport fees with the local taxi service in the transportation of orphaned learners to and from school. Apartnership was established with the local police station to gain their support. Should any orphaned learners report physical abuse, they would be respectfully treated. The systemic and collaborative nature of the role of the SBST in this primary school is highlighted in this case study. Without the visionary focus and strategic planning of the SBST in supporting the orphaned learners, they would probably have dropped out of school. Thus the transformation of the SBST into a broad-based structure which networks with a myriad of sources is crucial in fostering inclusive educational practices in South African schools.

This research is directed at mothers of toddlers in the Frankfort magisterial district. The objective of the study is to determine whether mothers with toddlers display a need for parental guidance. Data have been collected and a theoretical framework has been constructed by means of a literature study and communication with experts. An empirical study has been conducted by involving forty-five mothers (respondents) of toddlers in the Frankfort magisterial district. Scientific and technological knowledge have been acquired by means of applied research. A questionnaire, designed by the researcher, was used to collect data. The following research question was posed: Does a need for parental guidance exist amongst mothers with toddlers in the Frankfort magisterial district? The conclusions and recommendations of the study focus on achieving the objectives and aims. Once the data had been analysed and processed, it became very clear that a need for formal parental guidance does exist amongst mothers in the Frankfort magisterial district. Mothers have indicated a need for additional knowledge and information regarding the cognitive, emotional, social and physical development of their toddlers in order to selfpromote aspects of the development of toddlers. Child care workers' management of sexualised behaviour displayed by children in residential child and youth care centresPietersen, Marisa January 2012 (has links)
Children have been shown to respond differently to the hurt that they suffer at the hands of others. Some of these responses involve internalised behaviours (i.e., repression of feelings, bodily symptoms, etc.); whilst others hurt manifest as externalised behaviours, such as physical attacks on others. These may include sexualised behaviours. The latter is particularly common amongst (but not restricted to) children who have been sexually abused (The American Psychological Association, 2001). For the purposes of this study a distinction is made between developmentally appropriate sexual behaviour and non normative sexualised behaviour which evoke complaints from and discomfort in those involved in the behaviour. The manifestation of these sexualised behaviours is especially pronounced amongst children in institutional care; and hence, it calls for constructive and effective management by the child care workers who are primarily responsible for their safe care and behaviour modification whilst in the institution. This qualitative study – with an exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design – served to explore how the child care workers’ effective management of such behaviours could be enhanced, so that the emotional wellbeing of both the “offender” and the “perpetrator” of this behaviour can be promoted. A non-probability purposive sampling technique was employed to recruit research participants from three different child and youth care centres in Port Elizabeth. A total number of 10 research participants were involved and data was collected up to the point of data saturation. Thematic content analysis was utilised for the analysis of the data and the necessary strategies were employed to enhance the trustworthiness of the data and to meet all the ethical requirements of the study. The main findings alert to the key requirements of Child and Youth Care Workers; it confirms the occurrence of sexualised behaviours; the urgent need for a consistent approach to the management of such behaviours; and for enhanced team work between the helping professionals in the team. The value of the study is embedded in the contributions it can make to practical interventions for children in institutional care, and to the sparse body of knowledge in this area.

D.Cur. / The occupation of the SOS mother, which involves long-term care for orphaned and abandoned children under the SOS Children's Villages organisation, is unique and peculiar in many respects. She is expected to play a dual role of being a foster parent and a childcare professional, at the same time. The latter presents challenges of its own because the professional status is only recognised internally by the organisation. In one way or another, most of the children for which the SOS mother is responsible, have been exposed to some form of trauma. The problems of caring and parenting such children are well documented in the literature. These include learning and behaviour problems. For this reason, the mental health of the SOS mother, who is the focus of this study, should be of special interest to mental health practitioner. The motivation for this study arises out of a change that the organisation is trying to enforce in the work of the SOS mother. This change comes with the release of the new quality standards to guide village work. One of these standards, the SOS mother's autonomy, requires the SOS mother, like any mother in the community to take full responsibility for her SOS family, including the development of the children under her care. When she needs help, she seeks expert advice from village co-workers and from the community. In addition, the career of the SOS mother has to be developed so that she functions like a childcare professional and that her training is recognised by the government and other training institutions. This represents a big change from how most SOS villages have been operating. Up to this point, village co-workers made important decisions about the SOS family and the children while the SOS mother did the caring part. The change is expected to affect the interactions between SOS mothers and their co-workers and consequently, their mental health. For this reason, it was felt that there was a need to facilitate the implementation of the SOS mother's autonomy standard, which would also promote the mental health of the SOS mothers. The purpose of this research was, therefore, to develop and describe a model that would serve as a framework for the advanced psychiatric nurse practitioner to promote the mental health of SOS mothers by facilitating the implementation of the SOS mother's autonomy within SOS Children's Villages of Southern Africa Region 11. The research also focused on developing guidelines for the implementation of the model in practice.

PhD (Sociology) / Department of Sociology / The purpose of this study was to critically determine the impact of communal child-rearing
approach on the prevalence of teenage pregnancy in Vhembe District, in order to develop
facilitation tools from which the parents can be empowered on the constructive parenting
approaches, specifically for a girl-child and teenage girls against the prevalence of teenage
pregnancy. This study further empowers the teenage girls in particular growing-up in Vhembe
District with the chance of healthy development and future favourable womanhood. A
combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches was used to conduct the study, with a
quantitative description and exploratory study design. A total of 400 participants, mainly
teenage girls, participated in a quantitative approach. Then 16 pregnant teenage girls, 19
teenage mothers, 6 key informants and 23 parents of pregnant teenage girls and mothers
participated in a qualitative approach. The participants for the quantitative approach were
sampled using the stratified random sampling technique because of the age-specific (13-19
years). Close-ended questionnaires were administered to them. The participants for in-depth
interviews were sampled using the purposive and snowball non-random sampling technique.
They were high school principals, teachers, and community leaders, pregnant teenage girls and
teenage mothers, and their parents.
Data collected through close-ended questionnaires were analyzed using the Statistical Package
for Social Sciences (SPSS) programme. Frequencies tables were created to categorize variables
and cross-sectional frequencies tables were further created to show associations between the
variables. The data collected through structured interviews, matrices were created using content
thematic analysis. The responses were grouped thematically and, with the emergence of subthemes,
broad categories were generated to differentiate and explain the thoughts expressed by
the participants. The study findings suggest that the prevalence of teenage pregnancy is purely
a social behavioral problem develop through critical parenting practices and approaches. The
study concluded that the total blame for the prevalence of teenage pregnancy is in the way
parents raise the teenage girls, whether influenced by their socio-economic status, cultural
values, availability or absence of the other parent, etc. the primary lack of sensitive parenting
recognition of the prevalence of teenage pregnancy, critically placed the teenage girls in
Vhembe District in the prevalence of teenage pregnancy. / NRF

Contexte : De nos jours, la plupart des femmes ont intégré le milieu du travail et les services de garde font partie du quotidien pour la majorité des enfants. Ces derniers représentent un milieu-clé dans la promotion de saines habitudes de vie. Les haltes-garderies communautaires (HGC) sont fréquentées par beaucoup d'enfants, dont certains en contexte de vulnérabilité, et n’ont pas encore été étudiées à l'échelle nationale en ce qui a trait à leurs pratiques, préoccupations, perceptions et besoins en lien avec l'alimentation et la nutrition à la petite enfance.
Objectif : Décrire les pratiques et identifier les préoccupations, les besoins et les perceptions des HGC du Québec en lien avec l’alimentation des enfants fréquentant ces lieux.
Méthodologie : À l’hiver 2018, un questionnaire autoadministré, en format électronique, a été envoyé aux représentants des 242 haltes-garderies communautaires membres de l’Association des haltes-garderies communautaires du Québec. L’approbation éthique a été obtenue du Comité d’éthique de la recherche en santé de l’Université de Montréal.
Résultats : Un total de 104 HGC ont répondu au sondage pour un taux de participation d’environ 43 %. Le contexte socio-économique des parents est la barrière à la promotion des saines habitudes alimentaires la plus rapportée. Plusieurs thèmes de formation proposés engendrent un intérêt chez plus de 75 % des HGC . Les deux formats préférés pour les outils éducatifs sont le partage de ressources ou d’activités exemplaires développées par d’autres HGC et les textes simples à imprimer pour le personnel.
Discussion : La situation particulière des enfants vivant en contexte de vulnérabilité et les communications aux parents semblent être des enjeux importants en HGC. Les éducatrices en HGC ressentent le besoin d’être davantage outillées sur plusieurs thèmes en nutrition, tels que les bonnes pratiques d’hygiène et de salubrité. Les formats d’outils usant de la technologie numérique correspondent aux besoins rapportés par le personnel en halte-garderie pour les formations et le partage d’informations. / Background: Today, most women have entered the workplace and child care is a daily part of most children's lives. These are a key environments in promoting healthy lifestyle habits. The haltes-garderies communautaires (HGC)are frequented by many children, some of whom are vulnerable, and have not yet been studied in Quebec with respect to their practices, concerns, needs and perceptions related to feeding and nutrition in early childhood.
Objective: To describe the practices and identify the concerns, needs and perceptions of the HGC of Quebec related to the feeding of children attending these places.
Methodology: In the winter of 2018, a self-administered questionnaire, in electronic format, was sent to representatives of the 242 HGC that are members of the Association des haltes-garderies communautaires du Québec. Ethical approval was obtained from the Comité d’éthique de la recherche en santé of the University of Montreal.
Results: A total of 104 HGCs responded to the survey for a participation rate of approximately 43%. The socio-economic background of parents is the most reported barrier to promoting healthy eating habits. Several proposed training themes generated interest among more than 75% of HGC. Themes related to parent / educator interactions are the most desired. The two preferred formats for educational tools are the sharing of resources or exemplary activities developed by other HGC and texts that are easy to print for staff.
Discussion: The special situation of children living in a context of vulnerability and communication to parents seem to be important issues in HGC. Educators in HGC feel the need to be more equipped on several topics in nutrition, such as good hygiene and salubrity practices. Tool formats using digital technology correspond to the needs reported by day care staff for training and information sharing.

1 Abstract The diploma thesis deals with three innovative models of childcare. The work is divided into theoretical and practical part. The object of the work is to inform about innovative child care models and to map the implementation possibilities of one described model. The theoretical part deals with the theme of family and its importance for the society. The disorders of family, reasons for child removals out of family, prevention of family failures and family preservation are farther described in this part. Other chapters are focused on already mentioned three models of care. The first model describes sharing care within providing support of volunteers, the second model inheres in sharing care within the residential care and the last model describes the sharing care within care provided by foster parents. The practical part addresses the research which was undertaken as semi-structured dialogs with social workers of foster parents and with foster parents too. A part of the research is formed by the analyse of reasons for child removals out of family. It was found out within the research that the implementation possibilities of sharing care within care provided by foster parents are low with regards to its demandingness and the general settings of our society.
