Since the history of interpretation as a thread through the literature search is described as allegorical hermeneutics evolved and remained relevant. The philosophical paradigm shift that led to the emergence of postmodern discourse is explained and demonstrated through dialogue of literature. In order to substantiate this hypothesis, based on studies, speeches, and publications of notably neo- Pentecostal churches reveals their use of allegorical hermeneutics from a worldview grounded in postmodern postulates with existential worldviews. It is concluded that the application of the primal allegorical hermeneutics, that shaped the discourse of Christianity, sometimes single, sometimes shared, but always referenced the existence of a fact, gave rise to a fluid hermeneutics, blurred the text to the reader-listener, generating a new way of experiencing the sermon in society, and the changing relationship with the world.

Treatment of mental health illness by Afrikaans speaking church leaders in Polokwane Limpopo Province

Kruger, Qunessa January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (Clinical Psychology)) --Univesity of Limpopo, 2013 / South Africa has a growing rate of mental health care users. Because of the lack of health resources and personal beliefs many of these mental health care users consult with their church leaders. The treatment of mental illness by clergy in South Africa is largely undocumented. The aim of the study was to explore and describe the treatment of mental illness by Afrikaans speaking church leaders in Polokwane, Limpopo Province. To gain a deeper understanding of the views held by the Afrikaans-speaking church leaders, a qualitative approach was utilized. Ten participants agreed to participate in the study. The results tend to suggest that most of the respondents use a combination of supportive therapy and teachings from scripture to treat some mental illnesses, and that they feel positive towards collaboration with other mental health care professionals. Lastly the results indicated that most respondents emphasized the importance of homophily in referral criteria. Key Concepts Mental illness; Christian church; Afrikaans speaking; church leader; treatment

Alien Son : The life and times of Cheok Hong Cheong, (Zhang Zhuoxiong) 1851-1928

Welch, Ian, iwe97581@bigpond.net.au January 2003 (has links)
This thesis contributes to the ongoing discussion of modern Chinese identity by pro-viding a case study of Cheok Hong CHEONG. It necessarily considers Australian atti-tudes towards the Chinese during the 19th century, not least the White Australia Pol-icy. The emergence of that discriminatory immigration policy over the second half of the 19th century until its national implementation in 1901 provides the background to the thesis. Cheong was the leading figure among Chinese-Australian Christians and a prominent figure in the Australian Chinese community and the thesis seeks to iden-tify a man whose contribution has largely been shadowy in other studies or, more commonly, overlooked by the parochialism of colony/state emphasis in many histo-ries of Australia. His role in the Christian church fills a space in Victorian religious history. Although Cheong accumulated great wealth he was not part of the Chinese mer-chant class of the huagong/huaquiao traditions of the overseas Chinese diaspora of the 19th and 20th centuries. His wealth was accumulated through property investments following the spectacular collapse of the Victorian banking system during the 1890s. His community leadership role arose through his position in the Christian Church rather than, as was generally the case, through business. His English language skills, resulting from his church association, were the key to his role as a Chinese community spokesman.¶ Cheok Hong Cheong left an archive of some 800 documents in the English lan-guage covering the major people, incidents and concerns of his life and times. His Let-terbooks, together with the archives of the various Christian missions to the Chinese in Australia in the 19th and early 20th centuries, shed light on one person’s life and more broadly, through his involvements on the complex relationships of Chinese emigrants, with the often unsympathetic majority of Australians.¶ This is a case study of a Chinese identity formed outside China and influenced by a wider set of cultural influences than any other Chinese-Australian of his time —an identity that justifies the description of him as an ‘Alien Son’. Cheong’s story is a con-tribution to the urban and family history of an important ethnic sub-group within the wider immigrant history of Australia.¶ While Cheong remained a Chinese subject his identification with Australia cannot be questioned. All his children were born in Australia and he left just twice after his arrival in 1863. He visited England in 1891-2 and in 1906 he briefly visited China. Identity and culture issues are growing in importance as part of the revived relation-ship between the Chinese of the diaspora and the economic renewal of the People’s Republic of China and this thesis is offers a contribution to that discussion.

Caroline Cristine Costa Camargo 12 December 2013 (has links)
This is a proposition for an action from a faith perspective in relation to the prevention of the improper use of drugs during adolescence and to the importance of the involvement of the Christian church in favor of social actions as a social network and a space of great influence in the families. The study works with theoretical bibliographical research, from which a dialog was established based on the data from the VI National Survey About the Consumption of Psychotropic Drugs among Students of Grade School and Middle Education of the Public and Private Teaching Networks in the 27 Brazilian Capitals of 2010. Following this it analyzes the data of the city of Campo Grande/MS, from the above mentioned study, which highlighted that it is in adolescence where the first use of drugs occurs. In this first part, some concepts about adolescence as a phase of discovery and physical and emotional changes are presented, indicating what are the types of drugs in existence, as well as which ones are preferred during this age bracket. In the second part, the study points to the role of the State and of civil society, the role of the family and of the church as part of the social network and their respective responsibilities with regard to the prevention of improper use of drugs in adolescence. The third and last part brings, yet, a dialog about the role of the church in a faith and love perspective emphasizing the actions of Jesus and, consequently, a proposal for social action to be carried out in the Christian churches. During the production of this paper, an exchange was established with legislations, psychology authors, social services and theology.
